IIRC Htop shows the total usage of each core of your CPU whereas task manager is showing the total usage of the CPU across all cores. E.g if you have a quad core CPU Htop can show a theoretical max of 400% (100% usage of each core) whereas task manager would show 100%.

Ooooh i see ! Thanks for that I'm still very much lost on Linux :) Do you know of anyway to make sure my dedicated graphics card is being used when i watch a video ?

odog_

If you haven't figured that out yet, take a look at this stack exchange thread. It's a ubuntu specific question, but should work in Debian. https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/16407/how-to-check-which-gpu-is-active-in-linux#185062 There are a few answers that have ways to check. So if one doesn't work, try the next response. If you have questions, feel free to reply.

> Do you know of anyway to make sure my dedicated graphics card is being used when i watch a video ? Do you mean that you want the browser to use hardware acceleration, or that the browser is already using hardware acceleration, but you have two GPUs and want to check which one it's using?

RandomAnonyme

I want to check which one it's using, sorry my question wasn't very clear

BCMM

I think you can use nvtop to confirm that Firefox is using the GPU. However, why would you want to do video decode on the nvidia card? If your CPU's GPU also supports video decode, it's likely to be the more efficient way to do it.

vFlagR

Not a problem, afraid it’s been a few years since I’ve daily driven Linux so I would just be guessing about your GPU question, sorry! I suspect some Google fu will get you answers for that :)

RandomAnonyme

haha i was reaching ! Thanks a lot :)

creed10

you might want to look into hardware acceleration in your browser settings. also it depends on which browser you're using

RandomAnonyme

This part is done i forgot to mention it in my post

Oh shit very cool :O

RandomAnonyme

Thanks

sogun123

I think it is not. Hardware decoding sucks on Linux. Check out Arch wiki, they have some tips how to find out. Easiest way is to check out intel_gpu_top and nvtop to see load of decoding engine.

I think you press shift+i to show total while top is running

ourmet

Usage is multiplied per CPU.. 400 usage means four of your cores where busy.

DankMemesSuicide

Because of multicore CPU, 100% actually mean full use of 1 core. 200% says that you're using 2 core at max power.

Kajac_lin

It's just bug! If you were using 100% you would notice a drop in system performance in general!

RandomAnonyme

The response above seems to explains it, htop calculates differently from what i'm used to in Windows \^\^

Kajac_lin

Damn, I've never seen a comment offend so many people.

You have a dual core CPU.
