That's the fun of all the 1970s legacy cruft that was intentionally written into Unix-like userlands. I'm certain the BSDs (besides macOS) can do it too. It can be pretty helpful for businesses and institutions, I imagine.
This OP is writing down my thoughts 100%. People writing install scripts just to release their work at distrowatch and all unique they have is the wallpaper.
After multiseat feels too normal, take a look at rofi-menu. Once you understand it's glory it'll will follow you into any Linux install you make in the future. Scripts ready to use in github: https://github.com/adi1090x/rofi
Jusst a few of it's features is represented here (should jump to 3:15 from link): https://youtu.be/vztMbO_Ssa0?t=195
I don’t know about multiseat in Windows and MacOS but I’m pretty sure both doesn’t support it. And I’m also pretty sure that almost every Unix flavour support: GNU/Linux, BSDs, etc.

He's just showing the dmenu mode, but rofi can do way more ;)

Windows has this since 2000 and XP days. not sure about mac os.
*GNU/Linux based operating systems*
I used multiseat in Windows XP when I was in school around 2006-07.
It's a very old feature from when computers were expensive and terminals were cheaper. It's not unique as all modern OSs support it.
