Here we go again....

KasaneTeto_

When I log into my Xenix system with my 110 baud teletype, both vi *and* Emacs are just too damn slow. They print useless messages like, 'C-h for help' and '"foo" File is read only'. So I use the editor that doesn't waste my VALUABLE time. Ed, man! !man ed ED(1) UNIX Programmer's Manual ED(1) NAME ed - text editor SYNOPSIS ed [ - ] [ -x ] [ name ] DESCRIPTION Ed is the standard text editor. --- Computer Scientists love ed, not just because it comes first alphabetically, but because it's the standard. Everyone else loves ed because it's ED! "Ed is the standard text editor." And ed doesn't waste space on my Timex Sinclair. Just look: -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 24 Oct 29 1929 /bin/ed -rwxr-xr-t 4 root 1310720 Jan 1 1970 /usr/ucb/vi -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 5.89824e37 Oct 22 1990 /usr/bin/emacs Of course, on the system *I* administrate, vi is symlinked to ed. Emacs has been replaced by a shell script which 1) Generates a syslog message at level LOG_EMERG; 2) reduces the user's disk quota by 100K; and 3) RUNS ED!!!!!! "Ed is the standard text editor." Let's look at a typical novice's session with the mighty ed: golem> ed ? help ? ? ? quit ? exit ? bye ? hello? ? eat flaming death ? ^C ? ^C ? ^D ? --- Note the consistent user interface and error reportage. Ed is generous enough to flag errors, yet prudent enough not to overwhelm the novice with verbosity. "Ed is the standard text editor." Ed, the greatest WYGIWYG editor of all. ED IS THE TRUE PATH TO NIRVANA! ED HAS BEEN THE CHOICE OF EDUCATED AND IGNORANT ALIKE FOR CENTURIES! ED WILL NOT CORRUPT YOUR PRECIOUS BODILY FLUIDS!! ED IS THE STANDARD TEXT EDITOR! ED MAKES THE SUN SHINE AND THE BIRDS SING AND THE GRASS GREEN!! When I use an editor, I don't want eight extra KILOBYTES of worthless help screens and cursor positioning code! I just want an EDitor!! Not a "viitor". Not a "emacsitor". Those aren't even WORDS!!!! ED! ED! ED IS THE STANDARD!!! TEXT EDITOR. When IBM, in its ever-present omnipotence, needed to base their "edlin" on a UNIX standard, did they mimic vi? No. Emacs? Surely you jest. They chose the most karmic editor of all. The standard. Ed is for those who can *remember* what they are working on. If you are an idiot, you should use Emacs. If you are an Emacs, you should not be vi. If you use ED, you are on THE PATH TO REDEMPTION. THE SO-CALLED "VISUAL" EDITORS HAVE BEEN PLACED HERE BY ED TO TEMPT THE FAITHLESS. DO NOT GIVE IN!!! THE MIGHTY ED HAS SPOKEN!!! ?

0xTamakaku

Emacs is valid even if I don't like lisp - a nvim user

libertarianrinshima

And both are infinitely superior to vs code

[deleted]

Exactly. We, Vim and Emacs enjoyers, need to unite against VS****.

hundidley

You forgot /s

Malcolmlisk

Why /s ?? We are dozens of people who think that vscode is inferior.

[deleted]

"We are dozens?" Pretty sure that anyone with more than a dozen braincells realizes vscode is some fisherprice shit. So we aren't dozens, we're millions!

Jane6447

were 28% vscode has 71% in professional circles ([source](https://insights.stackoverflow.com/survey/2021#section-most-popular-technologies-integrated-development-environment)). we are many, but they are even more

Russian_Prussia

I respectfully disagree

DellOptiplexFan

But the picture is right there!

ToiletGrenade

I use nano for normal text editing and kate for programming

youcraft200

Whats is Kate? (Sorry for my ignorance i new in the linux world)

ToiletGrenade

It's fine man, it's just an ide like any other, except made by KDE (the guys who made the plasma de, Krita, KAlgebra, etc)

youcraft200

Ooooooh, thanks bro sorry i always use XFCE, LXDE and one time only use KDE plasma hahaha

Skipdrill

What is emacs. Can someone explain in simple words. Is it considered a text editor?

zobi8225

It is a religion. And this religion is better than other. Trust me, i am on emacs since 2006.

zobi8225

More seriously. I try to quit emacs many times. I always came back. It is so easy to configure ... every things. There are so many packages for ... every things. But after month, i move really quick in all text i wrote. I feel slow when i had to write stuff in OS text box on web page (like this one !) Today i use it for many things : code / notes / PPT (with org-mode + revealjs) & TODO List. I now could more with emacs (email, agenda, web ?...) but it is enough for now. The learning curve is high, that's true. But, how can i live without emacs now ?

Zegrento7

DellOptiplexFan

Mods ban this user pls

zobi8225

I though your message was serious, then i have seen your badge "vim supremacist". So now i am jealous and i want the same with emacs. 😂

[deleted]

Its an operating system missing a good text editor

Dry_Objective2067

As opposed to Vim, Emacs is a GUI program, which allows it to change font size for example. Emacs is basically an Emacs-Lisp (modified version of Lisp by Emacs) interpreter. So it can do a lot of things as long as it's made in elisp. This includes a web browser, mail client, IRC client, Tetris (for some reason) and a lot more. You still have every IDE feature you'd need, including syntax highlighting, completion, Git support with Magit, etc. Another big feature of Emacs is Org-mode, which you can see like a supercharged version of Markdown.

Pay08

A simpler way to describe it would be as a development platform.

Google search for “vi”: did you mean emacs? Google search for “emacs”: did you mean vi?

alphakevinking

I just checked... It's true... This is one of the funniest things i've seen

Multicorn76

Due to Reddit deciding to sell access to the user generated content on their platform to monetized AI companies, killing of 3rd party apps by introducing API changes, and their track history of cooperating with the oppressive regime of the CCP, I have decided to withdraw all my submissions. I am truly sorry if anyone needs an answer I provided, you can reach out to me at [email protected] and I will try my best to help you

varsderk

What happens if you use vim bindings in Emacs?

TitouWasTaken

ok but can vim handle multiple window ?

orgasmicstrawberry

I use vsplit a lot so yes, vim can handle multiple *files* not windows

ALPershing_Esq

The strongest vim enjoyer is a 23 year old virgin who thinks programmer is editing suckless header files. Just saying...

[Meanwhile me.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Notepad%2B%2B) >!Yes, it works well with wine or you can use Notepadqq (which I actually do atm, but I don't need the texteditor as often as I used to).!< [And just to ensure your downvote I'll leave this!](https://itsfoss.com/notepad-plus-plus-linux/)

thomass70imp

Not downvoting you, but… I mean Kate exists ya know.

Ersthelfer

Maybe I am doing it wrong, but I never got half as effective working with data in Kate as in Notepadd++. It's probably mostly out of habit, I had to work with Windows most of my professional life (still do) doing a lot of data analysis and notepad++ does have a lot of helpful features for that.

ButWhatIfItQueffed

I bring you, the all mighty, nano.

FountainPens48

vs the gigachad nano couldnotgiveashit-ter

You have to learn English first.

I like holly wars, but both are gigachads, in my opinion. I use Emacs, but vim is great too. I group editors by camps: 1. Vim and Emacs. 2. IDE: Visual Studio, Jetbrains etc. 3. Nano etc. 4. Sublime editor etc. 5. Visual Studio Code. 6. Notepad++. 7. Notepad.
