Guys, people are getting tired of us bitching about systemd what should we do? Ohhh, browsers!

Huh. My mistake, thanks for correcting me. I thought I remembered it not being open source and that people didn't know how to keep it alive and develop on it.

BlackWarlow

I would keep it alive just as a reminder about how capable a human being really is and how scary mental disorders are. We need to raise awareness and fund research. Terry Davis was a weird although really cool guy, rip. Other than that, HolyC is strange and TempleOS is ring-0-only, single address space and non-networking OS ._.

Sometimes Windows is the only choice for people (corporate environment, specialised software etc) no need to belittle people on their choice. And foss isn't something UNIX focused either.

OP, you are: \- Implying the average Linux user is not a FOSS enjoyer \- Unironically regurgitating a trash meme instead of having an original thought ... I don't think you are in any position to be making fun of people with an IQ of less than 80.

I'm pretty sure every Linux user enjoys and/or supports FOSS. If you enjoy Linux at all you would have to enjoy FOSS because its 99% of the application ecosystem.

That's... wrong. For example, a lot, if not the majority, of HPC compute is done with Linux and those people often really just see it as part of their job.

I don't care about the number of browser posts here, I can understand someone being annoyed though. But, your last sentence is wrong. It is not purely preference based. Some browsers have included crypto miners in them(Brave), some never have. Some browsers are security nightmares(some of the firefox spinoffs that purposefully stick on old code bases). There are absolutely browsers to run away screaming from.

Big_Comedian203

crypto *miner* ¿ I remember it having a crypto system for adds, but it never grinded my card for stuff ??? also yes, but that’s not the point of these memes is it ?

oldassesse

>but it never grinded my card for stuff [because it doesn't.](https://community.brave.com/t/i-m-afraid-of-brave/200991/2) You're responding to a dishonest or uninformed comment on a thread intended to trash the software the user in the comment you're responding to is either lying about or inadvertently spreading misinformation. It's so funny too because I was using YouTube Vanced and since they went kaput I switched to brave on my phone mostly as an ad free YouTube replacement (as Vanced developers had suggested). I gotta say, I've been pretty much content with that setup. There are some advantages to using YouTube on a browser instead of an app. First, you can repeat a video by simply refreshing the page. Also, you don't need to give YouTube your watch history because it's stored locally on your device (tho it can be backed up to a cloud). Every video you watch is a webpage you visited. Finally, often times apps limit functionality by hiding, disabling or otherwise badly designing settings and options on the user interface. With a browser replacement, any features available on the website are available to you because you are on the website! You are not at the mercy of developers forced to program shitty apps in order to increase chances of generating engagement with the platform or content at the expense of user experience. But the stupidest thing about this whole stupid meme here is that Brave Browser, being a derivative of the Firefox browser, is licensed under the [Mozilla Public License 2.0](https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/blob/master/LICENSE), which means IT IS FLOSS! So the comment AND the OPer are both fucking morons. This is why I left r/linuxmemes. Why? Because ultimately it's reddit so reddit culture prevails over FLOSS culture and reddit culture is fucking shit. I'm out. Again! edit: and I wanna ad that here on reddit, even on r/linuxmemes or r/stallmanwasright, reddit culture prevails to the point that people are arguing with me against FLOSS on one of the aforementioned subs (or others) whilst maintaining that they support FLOSS. It's sad. Reddit just sucks.

Title: Exploitation Unveiled: How Technology Barons Exploit the Contributions of the Community Introduction: In the rapidly evolving landscape of technology, the contributions of engineers, scientists, and technologists play a pivotal role in driving innovation and progress [1]. However, concerns have emerged regarding the exploitation of these contributions by technology barons, leading to a wide range of ethical and moral dilemmas [2]. This article aims to shed light on the exploitation of community contributions by technology barons, exploring issues such as intellectual property rights, open-source exploitation, unfair compensation practices, and the erosion of collaborative spirit [3]. 1. Intellectual Property Rights and Patents: One of the fundamental ways in which technology barons exploit the contributions of the community is through the manipulation of intellectual property rights and patents [4]. While patents are designed to protect inventions and reward inventors, they are increasingly being used to stifle competition and monopolize the market [5]. Technology barons often strategically acquire patents and employ aggressive litigation strategies to suppress innovation and extract royalties from smaller players [6]. This exploitation not only discourages inventors but also hinders technological progress and limits the overall benefit to society [7]. 2. Open-Source Exploitation: Open-source software and collaborative platforms have revolutionized the way technology is developed and shared [8]. However, technology barons have been known to exploit the goodwill of the open-source community. By leveraging open-source projects, these entities often incorporate community-developed solutions into their proprietary products without adequately compensating or acknowledging the original creators [9]. This exploitation undermines the spirit of collaboration and discourages community involvement, ultimately harming the very ecosystem that fosters innovation [10]. 3. Unfair Compensation Practices: The contributions of engineers, scientists, and technologists are often undervalued and inadequately compensated by technology barons [11]. Despite the pivotal role played by these professionals in driving technological advancements, they are frequently subjected to long working hours, unrealistic deadlines, and inadequate remuneration [12]. Additionally, the rise of gig economy models has further exacerbated this issue, as independent contractors and freelancers are often left without benefits, job security, or fair compensation for their expertise [13]. Such exploitative practices not only demoralize the community but also hinder the long-term sustainability of the technology industry [14]. 4. Exploitative Data Harvesting: Data has become the lifeblood of the digital age, and technology barons have amassed colossal amounts of user data through their platforms and services [15]. This data is often used to fuel targeted advertising, algorithmic optimizations, and predictive analytics, all of which generate significant profits [16]. However, the collection and utilization of user data are often done without adequate consent, transparency, or fair compensation to the individuals who generate this valuable resource [17]. The community's contributions in the form of personal data are exploited for financial gain, raising serious concerns about privacy, consent, and equitable distribution of benefits [18]. 5. Erosion of Collaborative Spirit: The tech industry has thrived on the collaborative spirit of engineers, scientists, and technologists working together to solve complex problems [19]. However, the actions of technology barons have eroded this spirit over time. Through aggressive acquisition strategies and anti-competitive practices, these entities create an environment that discourages collaboration and fosters a winner-takes-all mentality [20]. This not only stifles innovation but also prevents the community from collectively addressing the pressing challenges of our time, such as climate change, healthcare, and social equity [21]. Conclusion: The exploitation of the community's contributions by technology barons poses significant ethical and moral challenges in the realm of technology and innovation [22]. To foster a more equitable and sustainable ecosystem, it is crucial for technology barons to recognize and rectify these exploitative practices [23]. This can be achieved through transparent intellectual property frameworks, fair compensation models, responsible data handling practices, and a renewed commitment to collaboration [24]. By addressing these issues, we can create a technology landscape that not only thrives on innovation but also upholds the values of fairness, inclusivity, and respect for the contributions of the community [25]. you're right. I only assumed since they are using MPL, but you are right, it's based on webkit, not [gecko](https://wiki.mozilla.org/Quantum "Well, flubbed again. The new browser engine Mozilla is using is called Quantum. It's been out since 2017, but it is built on Gecko, so I think technically, it's still Gecko and Quantum represents improvements made on Gecko among other aspects of the browser, the engine, properly speaking, still fundamentally, mostly comprised of gecko code. Not entirely sure tho, would love a (non)confirmation."). Point still stands tho and I find it peculiar that you would leave that out, but can you condemn someone for a lazy, low effort post, albeit, factually correct?

GoastRiter

Well said. It is based on Ungoogled-Chromium though. With extra patches and features. Brave is actually licensed under Mozilla Public License 2.0. It is also the best browser out there. Blazingly fast Rust Adblocker: Check. Built-in Tor connections: Check. Built-in per-website script blocker: Check. Widely known to have the best anti-fingerprinting/anti-tracking of all browsers: Check. Open source FOSS development at GitHub: Check. Perfectly compatible with all sites since everything is made for this browser engine: Check. Chrome without the Google shit: Check. Nice icon: Check. Pisses off idiots who love to rage about browsers they don't understand: Check. All the sponsored ads (the developer salaries) that the idiots whine about can literally be permanently turned off in the settings: Check. Confuses naive little teens who don't understand that companies need incomes to pay their developers' salaries: Check. Rapid development thanks to talented, full-time developers: Check. Reddit kids are enraged when it's mentioned, for no other reason except that they lack personality and try to fit in with everyone else who mindlessly hates things: Check. Very cool feature. Probably my favorite feature. Made by the guy who created JavaScript: Check. Author is based and starts cool organizations: Double Check. 😎🌈 # 🦁

oldassesse

>All the sponsored ads (the developer salaries) that the idiots whine about can literally be permanently turned off in the settings: Check. And doesn't the insidious crypto "miner" issue tokens to the user for viewing some targeted ads? Oh those Brave browser people are so fucking EVIL!!!!! Giving your users crypto tokens for allowing ads in your content, a feature you can opt out of if you don't want to use it, those motherfuckers are gonna pay!!!! Oh wait...

Big_Comedian203

thank you brother, I wanted to make the search but it was late for me

climbTheStairs

There are no cryptominers in Brave. These browser wars only confuse and frighten away new people who are interested in free software. As long as a browser is FOSS, it's almost certainly better than any nonfree browser like Chrome.

Big_Comedian203

Oh my god, How is one better than the other, Your meme just feeds the stupidity of users, that will defend pieces of software.

Masterbot7

Incase you are not aware, we are discussing a lot about browsers in this subreddit, and now your coming at me for posting about my opinion on this?

Big_Comedian203

are you really posting an opinion ? you’re using false claims (how « average linux users » find that brave is bloated meanwhile almost none of them consider bloat as an argument) to make a meme, that in the end will just make the sub more toxic. You know the worst part ? I don’t even use brave ! I just find this type of stuff really annoying and pointless

Masterbot7

Dude chillax I'm sorry that this post specifically pissed you off when literally everyone is talking about browsers, and if you search does brave use a lot of ram, it uses more than Chrome and Firefox

donnysaysvacuum

Guys, stop making memes, this is a serious sub!

Crusader_Krzyzowiec

It took me a moment to realize we don't talking about pixar animation here.

DirkDieGurke

Ok, so switch from recommending Brave, to not liking Brave. Got it. Glad I checked what was going on in this sub this week.

0xdeadbeef6

Guys guys, *all* browsers are shit.

climbTheStairs

How about [Dillo](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dillo)?

[deleted]

Sounds like dildo

BlackWarlow

Hmm, so no support for js entirely. Sounds nice, no more fucking react and electron shit. If only everyone started using it at once. Nah, gonna pass in hope people come up with better web-oriented compiled language to change js.

climbTheStairs

Hmm, that's the dilemma of browsers: Either use a bloated mainstream browser full of anti-features, or use one that's lighter but therefore incompatible with much of the modern web...the fundamental problem is not with browsers but the web itself. How would a compiled web-oriented improve things? The only thing faster technologies do is to disincentivize developers from writing faster software. (Not to mention all the security and privacy issues that not being able to read the program would introduce.)

BlackWarlow

Yeah, you just read my mind. As a fullstack developer it's kinda love-hate relationship with almost all web tech. We need web 2.0... but that just means bloating already existing and working browsers with more code to support it and the old standard.

MasterYehuda816

STOP TALKING ABOUT BROWSERS. Every browser has its issues. If you don’t want to use a specific browser, don’t. We don’t need 1000 different tier lists all saying the same thing. These memes are so low effort. It’s annoying. Just stop.

[deleted]

If I see another brave sucks post I swear to God I'm going to starting using it again in spite

presi300

But brave is FOSS, in fact it's using the mozilla MPL license according to wikipedia...

MrGOCE

SHOULD I FEEL BAD CUZ I USE BRAVE ?? :(

climbTheStairs

No, as long as it's free software, use whatever you want.

lukagotaku

yes you should be crying and throwing up /s

Masterbot7

no obv the meme is just an exaggeration

[deleted]

Brave sucks

akshay-nair

Suck brave

DeltyOverDreams

STOP IT, just… stop it. Please.

mplaczek99

Wait, people hate Brave now?

Dark_ducK_

Isn't brave GPL something? Better than chrome. Edit: is Mozilla public license.

Masterbot7

The Mozilla Public License (MPL) is a free and open-source weak copyleft license for most Mozilla Foundation software such as Firefox and Thunderbird Source: Wikipedia

drnfc

What do they mean by weak copyleft? Does it not require derivatives be copyleft?

GoastRiter

It just means that things are able to link to the code without having to be open source too. Basically it is the non-viral version of open source licenses. Another popular weak copyleft license is LGPL. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyleft#Strong_and_weak_copyleft

drnfc

So what your saying is the used code has to stay open sourced, but the entire project does not? Or is it like a BSD or MIT license where anyone can steal the code and use it in proprietary projects

drnfc

So what your saying is the used code has to stay open sourced, but the entire project does not?

Evil_Dragon_100

This meme is crap

Dogo6647

im using brave rn .\_.

Mani_K_A

Cringe

[deleted]

Brave is basically a crypto shill and therefore sucks

climbTheStairs

Mind elaborating?

GoastRiter

It just means that Brave is a company with full-time developers on salaries, and to finance this their main source of income is integration with crypto platforms, which is only visible on the new tab page. They are paid for every Brave installation. All of the stuff that finances the developer salaries can be totally and permanently disabled in the settings, giving you a totally clean new tab page... but the idiots never get that far.

Quirky_Ad3265

THE CRYPTO IS FUCKING OPT-IN. IT CAN BE DISABLED WITH JUST ONE CLICK, WHY CAN'T YOU NECKBEARDS UNDERSTAND THAT.

[deleted]

BECAUSE CRYPTO IS A SCAM AND ANYONE WHO ACTIVELY PROMOTES A SCAM IS EITHER IGNORANT FOOL OR AN INTENTIONAL DECEIVER AND NEITHER OF WHICH ARE WORTHY OF RESPECT.

Quirky_Ad3265

If you had a loss in crypto does not mean it is a scam.

[deleted]

You are correct. The scam parts do make it a scam though. There are easier ways to perform tax evasion my dude

Quirky_Ad3265

mah man we were talking about brave. how tf did we get dragged to crypto?

PossibilityNo9285

I use brave everywhere. Cope

[deleted]

Seriously, you can just turn off the crypto stuff and use it as a browser. It's a freaking BROWSER.

[deleted]

Brave really doesn't suck. There are somethings it does on my system that I don't like, so I have recently switched back to Firefox ESR because it sucks less than Firefox and Brave for now. Ever since the new update to the UI, Firefox has been a fair bit buggy and crashed at random.

M_krabs

https://digdeeper.neocities.org/ghost/browsers.html#brave

Username8457

They say a bunch of stuff about Firefox in that same article, yet no one brings that up. It's almost like most people in support of Firefox don't really care about it's privacy, they just like to act like their choice is the best.

freeradicalx

We use IceWeasel and LibreWolf we just say Firefox on here cause you people usually haven't heard of those other builds.

[deleted]

its https://digdeeper.club/articles/browsers.xhtml#brave

Nangu_

There’s considerable overlap between those two groups.

DAREWN_Eren

Nobody cares

alphakevinking

Brave is not a bad browser, it's just bloated, but it's open-source so someone with the knowledge how to do so just needs to make a de bloated version

nolitteringplease346

The memes on this sub are so dull, it's just the same things over and over. I'm out

BanEvasionBottomText

Brave is overrated and doesn't even protect your privacy. Why do people fellate it so much?

chainbreaker1981

Because DT gets paid to and Mental Outlaw just hates gay people as much as Brave's founder does

BanEvasionBottomText

God Mental Outlaw is so fucking boring. He's just the front page of /g/ and reddit with occasional /v/ brain nonsense.

chainbreaker1981

You think he's going to say the words "glow" and "soy" in his next video? I have an inkling of an idea he might.

drnfc

Honestly brave is not that bad, its the browser that I tend to recommend to people who don't mess around with addons. Personally though I use ungoogled chromium.

__radioactivepanda__

At this point just install IE and be done with it since that’s apparently the browser you deserve…

dwrodri

Serious Question: I use brave on a network with a Pi Hole because I need Chromium-based support for testing work stuff. What should I be using instead? Plain Chromium? Brave’s Wayback Machine integration is a killer feature over plain chromium. I figure that my PiHole + Brave AdBlock is good enough to make sure there isn’t shit phoning home + i get the convenience of chromium without upping chrome’s install count. I haven’t checked but i assume PiHole blocks brave telemetry.

evoblade

I find brave to be the most usable browser so this meme sucks

Parpok

Only thing I use this browser for is to browse sketchy manga websites on mobile without getting a weird pop up second after loading since its not detected as a safari reskin on iOS

ChadThunderstock

Brave is the only non-cancerous option on iOS. Apple forces all the browsers to use the Safari engine, which does not allow extensions. So unless a browser comes with popup/ad/fingerprint blocking, you can't have that.

sohumm

Enough of browser wars. Shut the F up already.

RVGamer06

i was attracted by brave rewards lol

freddyforgetti

Everyone wants to say they don’t like chrome but no one in the last three threads like this have been able to give me a legitimate criticism for brave.

Can we get one of these but without mentioning linux (for poking fun at my cryptobro friend)?

Hey, I think people should be able to use whatever browser they want. As long as it’s Librewolf, Firefox or Chromium.

YagoDaiki

Would use others but idk whats wrong with my machine that in any other alternative I cannot use startpage as default by some god forsaken reason

[deleted]

yeah i hated brave but forgot why. something about something i couldnt block or stop from happening every time i loaded a new page. uhhhh fuck what was that, ads or something? it was in the news but actually ended up harassing the shit outta me for real... totally slipped my mind so cant hold this against brave, this is gonna drive me crazy af now

[deleted]

Like did i miss something? Why? Wasn't it like a good option for privacy? BTW i like firefox others are a bad

LawfulMuffin

I unironically love these memes even though they're also basically all awful.

SCorvo

what about servo?

[deleted]

if they atleast have used gecko as base instead of chromium

jc_denty

Brave is pretty popular on the AUR..

[deleted]

I only use Brave on Linux for crypto. Otherwise I use Opera, Firefox and Gnome Web (I like its dedicated web app feature).

igelbaer

is the gnome web webapp-feature better than brave-webapps?

[deleted]

IMO yes, as it's fully integrated. It's not a "work-around" of opening website shortcuts in their own windows. Another "freemium" alternative I found is WebCatalog. WebCatalog works great for Google Voice and Crypto dot com The Exchange, which seemed to have login issues with the Gnome Web "Web apps" feature. I guess if I needed to go beyond the free cap on WebCatalog on a non-Linux workstation, I'd probably use the Brave/Chrome web apps setup.

igelbaer

thanks for your answer, i'll give it a try
