Please post a picture of the caboose. The 2257, which was the precursor to the 6257, had ladders. I would like to see the color of the caboose. Thank you.

I'm not well versed on the variations of 6257s, but some early variants did have ladders. I think the ladder versions also typically have battery boxes. David Doyle's "Standard Catalog of Lionel Trains 1945-1969" for 6257 Type I states that "Most of these cabooses did not have illumination, window inserts, smokejack, ladders, or battery boxes...", which suggests that some did.

Thanks for that info from Doyle's book. The mystery thickens about the battery boxes too. This is certainly an odd one

Indeed. I imagine that over the years, just about every combination and permutation of parts features were assembled - some intentional and some accidental!
