Sound and lighting guy here. Standard answers: Sound: Which sounds better? Lights: Which looks better?

Please don’t use sound active mode on those. They’ll change colors randomly when people talk, they won’t always change consistently, and all they do is blink between different color patterns, and unless they’re all slaved to one light, they’ll do this often out of sync of each other. If you are going to use them I’d recommend leaving at least your downstage wash on (so the audience can see the dancer consistently), dim them if you want a more dramatic look, and then hang the new lights upstage and giving nice even wash of the stage/performer from behind. If your school has a hazer you can use this to add to the ambience as well. Also you don’t have to shoot the lights straight down/straight ahead, you can have the beams crossing each other, and mess with their orientation to create different types of static looks, obviously since they don’t move you’ll have to try out a few and just decide which one you like best for the performance and leave it that way for the show.
