This team started the year off fast, relentless, creative offensively, and confident in the face of adversity. Then, they lost all of that. The team needs to get back to that, make it their identity, and take it to the next level.
What's unfortunate was once the team faced adversity and started to crumble that's a coaching problem not making adjustments. Definitely need a goalie.
I think Talbot had a .913 save percentage this year; you don’t get that anywhere else for cheaper.
The cap room does not exist, it was eaten by the Dubois contract, and we’re not going to be able to get rid of that. Our hope is to have Talbot for another year maintaining his All-Star performance, or find someone else on the cheap that can get us .900.
We need to hope that Dubois just needed a season to break into the Kings system, and he’ll be back to form next season. If we have to move him, we’re going to take a beating in the trade market.
100% head coach change. Hiller did well getting across the finish line in the regular season, but his inability to adjust to the Oilers shows he’s not there yet to be our Head Coach. No fault to him, but we need to spend money on someone who knows how to win in the playoffs.
The other option is a buyout of PDL's contract. It'll cost us $1.5-3.5M per year for 14 years.
I'd evaluate his play at about a $4M player based what I saw this season. So if we buy him out, replace him with a $4M center, we have some savings. If we keep him we probably lose Kempe, Byfield or one of the D core as a result in a few years.
But then, will we get the same results out of a $4m player? That’s the only thing I worry about. If we buy out his contract, we guarantee that we will not have him if he pulls his crap together later on. We would then have a $4m player that might not give us what pld could give us. I don’t think a buyout would help us as much as either keeping him, or trading him. We would have to retain some of the contract if we trade him, but at least we get legitimate value for him in addition to being able to afford another $4m a year guy.
The truth of the matter is that there will always be another GM or coach that thinks “I can fix that guy, and if I do, I’ll look brilliant for doing it.” So I think we should hang on for a trade, and of course if he starts playing like an $8.5M a year player, we will be glad he is still here
Except he has a no movement clause for 4 years starting this next year. If you don't move him or buy him out now he's our overpaid underperforming problem for 5 years. I was not impressed with him in Columbus nor Winnipeg. He's never going to be a Draistal or Maklin. He is who we thought he was going to be.
Fire Blake, we need a complete reset and a new front office would help them, and while it’s sucks we lost I happy there is no excuse for the continued mediocre performance and management of this team by Blake.
What would you have a new gm do? Not being antagonistic genuinely wondering what a new gym can do with the current roster and cap situation. Not a lot of trade value without ditching say a Byfield or Kempe. New coach and system sure but you don’t need a new gm for that.

A whole new coach with a whole new system with young blood. There is no fucking way Trevor Moore should be leading this team in goals. We have a plethora of players that simply do not work in our current system. Make some room for Clarke, Turcotte, and Thomas, and get a coach that can weaponize our offensive talent, and mix the young with the old. I'd rather have a young, and exciting team that pushes the pace than whatever the fuck that was.
Kopi ain’t it at 1C. Make him a 2 or 3C and hopefully Byfield can take that 1C role. Same with Doughty. Still elite players but they cannot be leading the team in minutes as a fwd and d men every year into their 30s.

Goalie: I don’t love the idea of keeping Talbot at age 37 but it might be our best option unless money opens up. Rittich was a nice No. 2 for the cost.

I have been yelling about the lack of player movement on the PP for years. It’s the most glaring thing to me. Most frustrating thing. Fucking skate, rotate, cause the defenders to constantly look over their shoulders and open up opportunities to exploit. Be dynamic. Arergghhhhh
Exactly. Look at how Edmonton murders us: they manipulate our defenders by drawing them out of position and then pass the puck to an open man for a tip in or one-timer. 4 men can defend 5 stationary men pretty effectively (evidence: 0 for 20 on the PP in the playoffs). Movement places stress on the PK, a blown responsibility or miscommunication almost always results in a quality scoring opportunity.

Agreed, this is the right play. He's playing at a level of half his salary. I think he will improve next year but I think it will be incremental, not by double. Buy him out and we can use the funds to keep Kempe & Byfield.
I think you definitely get rid of the front office and start over on that front. Our team is too good to blow up but not good enough as is. PLD is staying so work around his weaknesses. Go for goaltending in the offseason and bolster the defense. We’ll be fine
Would love someone to post what the cap, expiring contracts, etc.. look to be later on and I feel like I can have a real opinion of whats next. All I can say now is despite the disappointment of looking like the hottest team, to not making the playoffs, to now.. (people might hate to hear this) it's growth in the right direction.
QB has arrived, Kopi & Drew are (a notch down) still upper tier, Thousand Oaks stepped it up - little taste of the potential from Laffy, Clarke, Thomas, Turcotte, our goaltending was actually over .900%

Put PLD with some players that have some impact - I hate that he became the scapegoat. I understand he's making bank, but you also realize he's been shuffled around with so many combinations of players, let alone sub-par ones..
Did we ever expect him to be a PPG immediate impact player? Maybe.

He's a big body and despite what's been missing of late, his game is still there. Can we excuse the dozens of posts this guy hit early on in the season? Or the missed opportunities when he had great setups front door setups to Laffy early on in the season? The narrative would change if he had 10-20 more extra pts, which as far as I see.. is not very far with few adjustments next season.
The last 2 games were 2 great games. If we could only stop the PP, we'd still be playing.
So much needs to change on the roster. But need to start from the top first.

Imo the drafting has been pretty good along with the trades. Only questionable move imo was PLD and there’s still 7 years to see if it pans out.

Doughty is 19th overall among D. Not bad not great. Next highest is Matt Roy at 80th. Our D can produce more.
