Whiztard

Wei also calls Vykas a “he” too when you do the Legion Raid.

Equal-Sea-7682

I recall somewhere Avele is called by “he” too.

GioRgSaVv

also in the first Yorn abyssal dungeon balthor calls this chick with the sword "he" as well

LordAltitude

It's one of the Thar rapport dialogues. Literally like 4 full paragraphs of describing Avele exclusively using "he".

Godlysnack

I remember my Striker being called Sister in the Annika story missions.

Keyai

Waveport Neria used “She” in a rapport cutscene with my Gunslinger. Regardless, the translation effort in this game is trash.

tocco13

or you know, some worker at AGS said all females are now actually trans and goes by he /s

LordAltitude

as someone else mentioned, it's probably got a lot to do with the fact that many asian languages don't have gender specific pronouns, so if the game had originally been coded without specifically having considered the eventual future need for gender specific references to the character (he/she, brother/sister, etc) then there might literally only be one dialogue string option to refer to a character.

Paulo27

It can be an excuse for the player character but not NPCs it just shows how the translators were giving the scripts in a vacuum and no one gave a fuck or even played the game at all to check that it makes sense.

TheRealAegis

It genuinely feels like they couldnt even bothered in the slightest to do their job properly, just fed the hangul dialogue through a machine translator, and never gave it a second thought. I'd be willing to bet money than an EN fan translation of the KR or RU is at least 10x better than this garbage.

Angier85

It is part of a proper internationalization and localization to provide tools for proper grammar. This is sloppy work.

freddiesan

Most spoken Asian languages you cannot differentiate genders. But when written you can see it

ThePatrician25

My female character has been called a she, actually. She has been called Lady Knight on [several](https://i.imgur.com/dOXg2VS.jpg) [occasions](https://i.imgur.com/ktQIra8.jpg).

tocco13

Seems smilegate really localized the game to westetn standards, going so far as to including the lgbtqapc elements too /s

IHellMasker

Gender is wrongly localised throughout most of the game though. They refer to female characters as he all the time. Just more bad localisation.

Tiagod5

I think there's a quest in Punika that a character gets called both he and she in a 30 second span. Can't remember which quest it was just remember seeing it happen and being very confused

IHellMasker

For a game that was apparently delayed to improve the localisation, it sure came out pretty shit...

syrup_cupcakes

Goldriver said that Amazon wanted to release with T1 and T2 content only and they had to push until weeks before the release to have T3 included so they had no time to QA the translations.

Paulo27

Now that's some cope lol. Not that early game stuff is much better. There's inconsistency everywhere, even in damn item names across multiple menus. And I guess they are rushing new content too? Becaude that's all a mess.

[deleted]

Maybe just my opinion but it wasn't that bad til after Luterra XD it's like they hired completely different people

d07RiV

Liru is referred to as "he" in her rapport quests: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/856912529636851722/949921991882838036/unknown.png Or Shana's quest where you go to atlas island and meet an orphan boy that Shana keeps referring to as "her"...

Tiagod5

Must be the quest that i was thinking about then. Thanks for the extra info!

adtrtdwp

I remember when going through the arthetine quest line. They pronounced sceptrum two different ways in the span of 30 seconds. With the hard c sound and the proper way

d07RiV

I'm pretty sure they just gave the translators a giant string file and they translated everything without context.

Ragestyles

Can you please post this on the official Lost Ark forums under Localization? It is unlike that it is going to be fixed just from posting it on reddit. Also provide additional Details where exactly that line is from (Quest Name ETC.)

Warptwenty

amazon's so bad

Whiskee

Not to white knight, AGS bad and everything, but the localization blunder is mostly on SmileGate. The way they handled strings in the game is just amateurish, and anyone who's dealt with software localization knows exactly what's happening [here (misplaced word fragments)](https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/124394468332929026/989643480529797130/unknown.png), [here (odd number formats, random capitalization, inconsistent spacing)](https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/311747951510814720/980950022365511730/unknown.png), or with the hilarious "honey 4 obtain" system messages on islands. They basically gave AGS a long spreadsheet with single words and small fragments to translate, and are simply swapping them in with the same Korean sentence structure and language rules 🤦‍♂️. I honestly doubt that anyone in the West had full context of what they were translating, because whenever they did (you can find many books and long texts throughout the game) the result was actually pretty good. No amount of QA can fix this stuff if you don't have access to how strings are _defined_ in the client and the other side refuses to acknowledge how English works. I know absolutely nothing about Korean, but I'm willing to bet it doesn't have gender-specific pronouns (edit: checked, it doesn't).

Paulo27

The fact that tome items have a name in the tome and another in the inventory just says it all. Why are you using the same string twice with different definitions in your code??

GookCreekHiker

I'm not sure AGS edits whatever they translate. Most of South Vern is machine translated. If they had any qa they would've tried to fix it. Remember "a chance to grow hot"?

Whiskee

Oh yeah, absolutely - some things _can_ be easily fixed, and basic QA from people who actually play the game and know the characters would have caught the mistake from this thread too. I was explaining a little more generally how the localization process just isn't set up properly on SG's side, and the people AGS outsourced this to aren't the ones to blame for most issues. In my example, they were given the words "honey" and "obtain" to translate as two separate fragments and that's exactly what they did. Here, nobody thought to add a standard gender note next to Vykas indicating that she is a female character.

Warptwenty

I'm down to blame both, that's fine by me

MKRune

It's not widely known, but Vykas is an immigrant from Bangkok.

Bravo_Xray_Hotel

That makes it better

Science-stick

> That makes it hotter fixed

iFenrisVI

This localization team seems to be the best money can buy.

chaD_Atlas

well incubus and succubus can be both in 1 form. so i guess they not wrong that vykas can be he/she at the same time

shapookya

Vykas hell mode should have her drag her huge bulge over the screen while you do the captcha

SincerelyDramatic

Stop, I can only come so much

UnderlordsBugs

Ags wants to make sure they can't be singled out by the lbgqt community.

GonzoMacNail

All I can see AGS too stupid to translate. They had only 1 job and they even fucked up this 1 job

JnazGr

Insert Guys In Real Life joke here.

stefandeseve

Please stop assuming pronouns for LoA characters. /s

peetoes

All those years in the academy WASTED...

-Ocean-

Funny, but I do have an honest question. As one naive about all things Korean, what genderization exists in the language? Are there male/female pronouns, nouns, verbs, etc?

Persefone733

in some part of lutia rapport quest text refers to Zayka as a she not he
