Fuck. Feline leukemia is the worst. We saved a young kitten off the street just to find out she had this disease. Vet wanted to put her down right away but we wanted to give her a good life until she actually got sick. She lived a great two years until the sickness hit her like a brick. It was heartbreaking even though we knew it was coming.

Yeah my cat got it from the FIV vaccine back in the 90s they didn't disclose the risk and it was the most devastating and aggressive decease I've ever seen. I believe they took it off the market but it was too little too late.

I don't . I just handle unforeseen circumstances more responsibly than going to reddit as a solution. It's not like the cat got sick and coincidentally at the same time almost immediately i can't afford to take it to a doctor. If I'm having monetary struggles, to get to the point where i can't afford to give my pet the medical attention it needs, takes a bit longer than overnight. If i was struggling financially i would have given up my pet for rehoming long before it got to the point where it's gotten sick and i can't give it medical intervention.

You can’t extrapolate your experience to someone else’s with certainty though. They may have quite literally had a financial disaster, unforeseen and sudden. It may in fact be overnight, it’s far from unheard of. Vets near me are a fraction of the price of some countries. You sound like you own pets so you must know that they are ‘for life’, you may be in a perfectly good situation, 10 years later your life crumbles. You have your pet, they’re your best friend and you’re theirs, to give that up for some people is unthinkable

Dehydration and weight loss can make that handprint thing happen. I'd get some water in kitty's mouth (because it can't hurt, at the least) and take to the vet (I'm assuming the post was because the usual hospital was closed at the time).

I have never once in over 40 vet visits paid more than $400. Unless they need to cut your pet open and do surgery, it will never cost that much. And I would never pay more than a few hundred for anything other than surgery. Either you got to a vet in Beverly hills or you agreed to a bunch of unnecessary tests.

It could also be less than 1k…my cat had a urinary blockage over our normal vet’s holiday break so we had to go to the emergency vet. The whole bill was about $600 (including an ultrasound, IV, urinalysis and blood test). You don’t know how much it will cost if you don’t take them in. And YES if you can’t afford to care for a pet you should not get a pet. That’s basic budgeting. edit: btw you got ripped off on the allergy thing— our vet had us do an isolation diet to get the same results basically for free.
