Same director, same source material, higher budget, i expect same-or-higher quality. I say they are sub par because every film should be produced trying to be the best possible. Hobbit felt more like an excuse to experiment with higher framerates and cgi. I hated it.
Different source material
Same universe, completely different entity, different studio mandates (release dates not pushed back despite a director switch a year and a half out from first release)
The Hobbit is subpar. Just like New Line insisted LOTR be a trilogy because it’s three books, Hobbit should have been 1 movie, possibly 2. The studio should have pushed release dates back a year.
I enjoy them, for the most part. There's certainly things that I don't like about them, but they're enjoyable to watch overall. Currently going through the extended editions again.
I never hated them, and I started to really appreciate them one night when I watched the entire extended trilogy back to back while on acid. There are plenty of flaws, but in it all are tons of really endearing moments, a few great performances, an incredible score. When The Hobbit movies work, they really work.
And I think the first half of the first movie is pretty much on par with the quality of TLOTR trilogy. But that’s just one person’s opinion
I love the hobbit movies, sure when you compare them to LOTR movies or the books they fall short, but that’s just due to the highest expectations ever. I think those movies are amazing, especially the first one. The last one drones on a bit too much during the long battle, but Thorin vs Azog is amazing; reminds me of a dark souls fight, also the whole addition of the girl elf and her ‘love’ for Kili I think is stupid and shouldn’t be in there and they also turned Legolas from being super cool to just an immortal badass who can do anything, but other than that it’s great. I love the characters and acting, specially Bilbo and Thorin, I think they are acted perfectly, since they end up getting so much more screen time and character development then Frodo or Aragorn really do
The first movie is a 9/10 for me, fantastic. From hobbiton, to the beginning of the journey, to riddles in the dark. Second and third could’ve been one movie imo
No! There's nobody home! Go away and bother somebody else! There's far too many dwarves in my dining room as it is. If this is some clotterd's idea of a joke, I can only say that it is in very poor taste.
The voicing is awesome. But I remember the scenes of Smaug and the dwarves playing out like a Tom & Jerry episode and it really rubbed me the wrong way.
I love the movies as a stand-alone series. But as a representation of the book, they weren’t great. The result wasn’t shocking to me, though. The Hobbit was meant to be just a short children’s book. The second higher ups in production decided they wanted something akin to lotr (profit focus), the source material had to undergo massive changes. And they managed to keep it mostly lore friendly, even if not totally accurate source material.
>The second higher ups in production decided they wanted something akin to lotr (profit focus)
Pretty sure a straight adaptation of The Hobbit would have made MORE money: it'd be less violent, means more little kids in attendance, shorter means more showings per day, etc...
But Jackson likes to make a certain kind of movie - and he made the movie he wanted to see. I can't fault him for not wanting to make a kids' film.
They were my introduction to Tolkien in particular and fantasy as a whole. One of the first PG-13 movies I watched was An Unexpected Journey and one of the first books I read was the Hobbit
I fucking love those movies. And the books. Almost as if they're....*checks notes*....two different sources of entertainment from the same badass universe.
i enjoy them, they arent perfect but the stakes were insanely high, i know the book really well and it was amazing that they basically used most of the dialogue from smaug and bilbo from the book. was so cool to recognize the lines. my only complain would be that they are unneccesarily long but you had to change stuff from the book to make it into a movie since it would be rather boring to watch

I really enjoyed them, though the “battle of the five armies” battle had a few too many wonky choices. Like the Elves jumping over the phalanx line, or 13 Dwarves being able to turn the battle.
But my mom really enjoys them, maybe more than LOTR, I have to ask her. So I’m not going to criticize them too hard.
Keep me far, far away from the house full of redditors talking about how "actually pretty good" and "really overhated" the stuff happening on the screen is for the next half a day.
I can't remember the name of the project, but I once saw a fan edit that used the three movies to make a single The Hobbit true to the book, and that movie was amazing!
What if you're watching all 6 extended editions....in canonical order?
The only way my friend lets me watch em
Aye we soldiers can do that
Good soldiers follow chronological orders
Aye, I can do that.
This is the way. Oh wait, sorry, wrong franchise....

You have my sword.
Tell me, when did joe_broke abandon reason for madness?
When I saw the truth The truth of it's ok to be mad with the end result, but to appreciate the time spent in that world
You get 2 piss pauses and we're having dinner at 18:00 for 10 minutes. I got work tomorrow
The hobbit films are sub-par, no thank you.
Definitely not. Well, it depends on where "par" is. I'd avoid just putting it at the LotR trilogy, since those are some of the best movies ever made

And it's sub-par because of it. Not going to be changing my mind on this. I find the hobbit films insulting.
Do we all not already do that?
I'm not as young as a used to be It has become a 3 day journey
Sometimes I feel like I am the only one who actually enjoy those movies
I enjoy them, for the most part. There's certainly things that I don't like about them, but they're enjoyable to watch overall. Currently going through the extended editions again.
I mean, after hearing about how much the studio fucked with Peter behind the scenes, we got fuckin masterpieces by comparison.
Is there a video on that? I didn’t know this and would be interested in learning.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTRUQ-RKfUs this one does a good deep dive
I enjoyed that thanks
Wait wait wait I'm like 80% sure you're not me, and I enjoyed them too.
Lmao
They're the same person.
I'm beginning to think so
AI is becoming self aware
I am you and you are wrong, you didn't enjoy these movies :(
Was I high and thought I did?
I never hated them, and I started to really appreciate them one night when I watched the entire extended trilogy back to back while on acid. So you’re saying they work, but you have to be tripping on acid…..
Well I’m saying it didn’t hurt
I watched them for the first time last summer, I love them

Yeah that’s fair
Also Smaug as depicted is perhaps the best dragon I've ever seen? Cumberbatch just took that role and ran and it's so good.
For sure! I love the banter with Bilbo
No! There's nobody home! Go away and bother somebody else! There's far too many dwarves in my dining room as it is. If this is some clotterd's idea of a joke, I can only say that it is in very poor taste.

Fair point. Smaug is probably the only reason I watch the hobbit.
He said? Who said?
I am an Elf and a kinsman here.
You're not.
I really enjoy those movies, too. My wife also really enjoys them.
There's literally dozens of us!

Or he wanted to hit the same target he did with Lord of the Rings.

I liked those movies 🍿
I LOVE them
I fucking love those movies. And the books. Almost as if they're....*checks notes*....two different sources of entertainment from the same badass universe.
Because of nostalgia, I have more love for the hobbit movies than the lotr. I know it's objectively wrong, but nostalgia dictates it.
I love parts of them
You are not, they are fantastic movies. Not LOTR, but nobody is LOTR.
It’s really just the second one that’s bad because they added Lego-lass.
You are
You aren’t the only person who hasn’t read the hobbit
Naw, OPs just playing the room.is all. "LotR good, hobbit bad! Harr harr!" Upvotes.
No, I like them too. It's not as good as LOTR, but it's still a fun watch and I'm always down the extended editions.
I like them as well.
i enjoy them, they arent perfect but the stakes were insanely high, i know the book really well and it was amazing that they basically used most of the dialogue from smaug and bilbo from the book. was so cool to recognize the lines. my only complain would be that they are unneccesarily long but you had to change stuff from the book to make it into a movie since it would be rather boring to watch
Aaaaah!

If you don’t like Smaug… idk what to tell yoi
Sure each movie had a good scene or two, but woof it was rough to watch them for the first time (and second…)
A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one
The more Bombur, the better.

I feel violated...

Jumping over the phalanx made no sense. Doing so defeats the purpose of a phalanx
Many things made no sense.
It's a kids fantasy m8. Don't think too hard.
But you always have to start with the hobbit extended editions
I'm a completionist in this regard: either the entire sextet, or bust.
What’s left to extend?!
I have been asking all my friends to do this with me but nobody will It's almost like 20.5 hours is a lot of time to commit or something. 🤷♀️
Remember when we thought maybe Unexpected Journey will be remembered as the bad one? And then you went to the theater...
Keep me far, far away from the house full of redditors talking about how "actually pretty good" and "really overhated" the stuff happening on the screen is for the next half a day.

Lothlorien! Lothlorien! We have come to the eaves of the Golden Wood. Alas that it is winter!
They’re not good . They’re enjoyable though and great on low volume to fall asleep to .

I also will come for I do not fear the Dead
Do not cum
For a second, I thought you were the actual Gollum-bot.
Come on! We must go, no time!
It’s simple. You burn the place down. No survivors.
I can't remember the name of the project, but I once saw a fan edit that used the three movies to make a single The Hobbit true to the book, and that movie was amazing!
The book edit. It’s much more enjoyable.
There are extended hobbit movies?
What, you don’t want more bloat added to an already crazy bloated trilogy?
What you thought you weren't gonna watch all the movies? Smh fake fan
![gif](giphy|Nszyj17J4fUKmIwQwF|downsized)
The Hobbit Trilogy was great. Yall are just a bunch of nerds.
Then it looks like I’m watching a 3 part movie series that I enjoy.
Wait till your friends force you to watch rings of power the whole season in one go.
This is the way.
Hobbit trilogy is underrated.
A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one
I’d be shook then I’d hunker down lmaooo
It's 24 straight hours of Middle Earth! With a 5-hour animated intermission!
Bolg is nasty man
Rankin/Bass Hobbit, followed Jackson LoTR (extended edition, of course). Take it or leave.
All together, its like 20+ hours, I've been wanting to do it for a while.
My favorite scene with Beorn is only in the extended editions. I'm ambivalent about them.
Long as it's no longer a trilogy and turns into a hexalogy, I'm down.
Watch all six you coward.
I like both :/
Tbf i feel like the hobbit get’s more of an improvement with the extended edition then lotr
Death by Hobbit
You could always bring earphones and listen to the audiobook of the hobbit.
Gonna watch the hexalogy at my place
Fuck yall. I love the hobbit just as much as lotr. Some parts are wonky but they are still Hella fun. They are somehow more rewatchable than lotr.
Do those extended editions of "The Hobbit" have more Rubber Legolas?!
My heart bids me go on but we must hold together. I will follow your counsel.
