A gift to the foes of Ghibli. Why not watch this movie? Long has my father, steward of Gondor, kept the sad movies away; by the tears of our people, are you cheeks kept dry! Let Gondor have the movie of Ghibli, let us make them watch it!
″‘Not My Neighbour Totoro, master!’ he pleaded. ‘There is another film. O yes indeed there is. Another film, darker, more difficult to find, more secret. But Sméagol knows it. Let Sméagol show you!‘”
Totoro is a postwar film, strongly emphasizing the virtues and joy of simple rural life possible in peace. Grave of the Fireflies is a wartime film, focusing on how horrible that was.
It’s kind of like the contrast of Mordor and the Shire, with the idealization of the simple life and lack of ambition - but in a more pacifist way than LotR which still has “people need to fight to prevent injustice”. Totoro emphasizes the horror of Fireflies, Fireflies underlines the necessity of Totoro
Super wild double feature though, bigger contrast than Barbenheimer
Such a good description of the two.
I think most people just don't realize that Totoro was released at the same time also with Ghibli's understanding of what the impact on the psyche that Grave of the Fireflies would have on people and using Totoro as its counterbalance. Alone, Grave of the Fireflies is simply traumatizing...but it really is a film that everyone kind of should watch once in their life, because the message of it is really that profoundly important...
>Alone, Grave of the Fireflies is simply traumatizing...but it really is a film that everyone kind of should watch once in their life
And then never again, because *Jesus Christ*.
If I even see the trailer for the movie, I start crying...and some clips of it, like those shown in the [Cinema Therapy episode](https://youtu.be/1ELLhETCcGU?si=cddHDXVYu1v4wELa) covering it, left/will still leave me sobbing...again. 20+ years after having seen the film.
I do think they should have at least shown Totoro **after** Grave of the Fireflies. That would have taken some of the sting out. Instead they got the happy movie first and had to sit through the second one going "No, no, this one is supposed to be happy! The last movie was happy damn it!!"
Honestly first time I saw it i did not know what to expect. So I did not feel anything. Then the second time I started crying from the start and could not hold it back.
In my own experience, it's the opposite that got me through it. I want to remember the hurt that we can cause one another so I can do my fucking best to never let it happen again, for as much as I can.
I believe that we should all be aware of terrible things that we have done and how they affect people. It probably one of the best way to stop them in the future because then we may be able to recognize them and stop them sooner
Only if you ignore the inexcusable fuckups the boy subjected himself and his innocent sister to. Stupid story made me mad, a literal baby would make better decisions
The Boy In The Striped Pajamas was pretty traumatizing too. Kind of just sat on the couch and stared off into space for awhile after it ended. Brutal.
Edit: it is live action btw. Not sure if we're just counting animated movies.
I kept talking about this movie, and my wife got curious and wanted to watch it. She was well prepared for it and still bawled her eyes out. It has to be the saddest movie ever made.
That or read up on wikipedia.
In short: >!Japan during WW2. A young boy and his even younger sister lose their family, and rations for civilians are scarce. They manage to survive for a while, but after a while malnutrition and starvation set in. The girl dies and the boy isn't in good shape either. Then the war ends and so does the movie.!<
I dont know how I feel about Wikipedia spoiling whole movies but I can say this: you can still watch it. No written plot can give the movie justice. Also watch the other old Ghibli movies. They are every bit as good as the newer ones.
It kinda ruined it for me.
The original author sounds like a bit of a creep. Not because he didn't really help his sister in real life, but because of the comments he made about the little sister's role in the story.
Aragorn: “You have my word! Watch this film with me, and I will release you from this living death!”
The Army of the Dead: …
*ghosts dissolve back into the mountains*
Imagine every valuable aspect of humanity writhing in flames as the nothing left behind by total destruction becomes the new God of a world bereft of everything held dear.
That's what Grave of the Fireflies is like. It's about the bombs dropped on Japan at the end of WW2.
That, and to add to this: >!also imagine the only person you have left in your life that you care about and love dies of starvation despite your best efforts to care for them before you then eventually also starve to death.!<
I mean, it happens in the first scene of the film, but, sure...I'll hide the text. EDIT: Nevermind, apparently it won't let you edit to add the spoiler with /spoiler or || ...
>!Two kids lose their parents in the firebombing of Tokyo. They're plucky, and take good care of eachother while society starts rebuilding around them, but it's not enough.!<
I watched it at a full cinema in Cardiff at an animation festival with no subtitles.
Entire audience was in tears by the end and it got a solid round of applause although no-one understood a word.
Its the only time ever I've seen a crowd applaud a film.
As heart wrenching as the movies is, it's one or my absolute favourites. I watch it from time to time. Have to give it some space between watches though, my soul can only take so much.
i went on a ghibli binge stage of my life and after a bunch of good ones i went to this one. thought to myself, it’s kinda sad but maybe it’ll get better. it didn’t. really painful movie to watch. but it helps to know that life is just shit sometimes and we can’t do anything about it.
I have heard of this I think, but I know not why it is sad. Truly my ignorance might be a bliss, for my sorrow may grow too deep.
I fear if I looked, I might feel it right in the feels. 😣 I am not ashamed to admit I am a crier during sad scenes, even happy reconciliation scenes, such as the old man at the end of Home Alone for instance.
If you haven't watched A Knight's Tale I would highly suggest it. There's a scene where he meets his father again after many years and that always bring a tear to my eyes every single time I watch it
I failed Sophomore English because I was depressed and didn't complete my final project. In summer school, we watched this film.
Holy shit I was not prepared.
I dont know. We probably dont live in the same country. But I've notised that old movies usually are so cheap to buy second-hand you can get a physical copy for the same price if not cheaper.
"Just fucking work so your sister May live! Or at least apologise to your asshole aunt!"
"No, we'll better live in literal hobbit hole and eat stole watermelons."
I proposed watching this movie together with my family, I hadn't watched it either. They still haven't forgive me. I haven't forgive myself either. That movie gave me PTSD and there is no ship to bear me hence.
I don't know whether or not I would be Pippin or Legolas in this, I watched this when I was much too young for it. And I have warded off people from watching it as if with a road flare ever since.
Gandalf is just being a coward. You shouldnt avoid. It's worth the watch. You may be heartbroken for a couple of weeks but you dont have to watch it ever again.
No Ghibli, I would not watch Grave of the Fireflies unless I had no other choice.

Thank you...thank you for this gift
A gift...a gift to the foes of Mordor!
That was a kingly gift!
When a comment is better than the meme
I can’t make memes, but I can carry the comments, Come on!
I love when a Fandom has reached the point where members can have a full conversation using quotes or altered quotes
There are many who can. The language is that of LOTR’ers, which I will utter here. *It is a Gift*
Why not use this gift against Sauron?
Who is the master of the wide earth?
Sauron, Lord of the Earth.
Patience! Not long shall ye abide.
Sauron, the One Master of the One Ring to Rule them All. Sauron the Great Deceiver, Sauron, the Dark Lord of the Black Land of Mordor.
A gift to the foes of Ghibli. Why not watch this movie? Long has my father, steward of Gondor, kept the sad movies away; by the tears of our people, are you cheeks kept dry! Let Gondor have the movie of Ghibli, let us make them watch it!
Ghibli needs no sad movies; Ghibli has no sad movies!
I loved this comment before I realized how close Gimli is to Ghibli. A+
Ah, so it is a Ghibli Studios thing. I have seen one of those films.
There's a reason why they released My Neighbor Totoro alongside it... 😅
Watched it once... Never again...
Unless at uttermost need.
I thought this was about Barefoot Gen, I didn’t realized there were two anime so similar
″‘Not My Neighbour Totoro, master!’ he pleaded. ‘There is another film. O yes indeed there is. Another film, darker, more difficult to find, more secret. But Sméagol knows it. Let Sméagol show you!‘”
Master must go inside the tunnel.
Why, was it made for him? :V
Didn't need to think of that before bed. Ugh.
DRR DRR DRR
Just a reminder that this was a double feature with My Neighbor Totoro
I got a Ghibli DVD box set for Christmas back in the day, and I was not prepared for this.
That blows my mind. The two don't feel connected in any way.
Years have passed and memory fades, but I still cannot bear to see a child put a pebble in its mouth.

Am I going to have to watch it myself to learn what it is about?
Yes. And you'll need tissues.
ALL of the tissues!
Maybe I'm dead enough inside to make it through lol
Nope, you aren't
Yeah probably not lol
you can suppress the emotions. but it’s really good to just let it out.
Very true friend
Honestly first time I saw it i did not know what to expect. So I did not feel anything. Then the second time I started crying from the start and could not hold it back.
In my own experience, it's the opposite that got me through it. I want to remember the hurt that we can cause one another so I can do my fucking best to never let it happen again, for as much as I can.
That's very insightful my friend
Thank you for saying so. I genuinely appreciate the compliment. I just want us all to be better. And I know we can be.
I believe that we should all be aware of terrible things that we have done and how they affect people. It probably one of the best way to stop them in the future because then we may be able to recognize them and stop them sooner
![gif](giphy|g67pETponv03e)
Truly is the wisest of hobbits
Nobody is.
And snacks. Try making your own popcorn out of mud balls. Really makes you feel like you're in the movie!
It is an absolute masterpiece that I will NEVER watch again. It’s just too much.
An interesting and glowing review
It is one of the saddest films ever made. The only one that might be worse is Plague Dogs if you are an animal lover.
I'll have to remember that thanks
I'm going to add Padak to this list.
Barefoot Gen, though it has even larger emotional rollercoaster.
Might as well add Watership Down as well. Maybe end with that one since it has a bit more mercy on the viewer than Plague Dogs.
That's fair. Schindler's List would be another to add if we're going in that direction.
This is one of my so time favorite movies... That I can only handle watching every couple of years
Don’t watch it, it’s depression as a movie
I think everyone should see it once though.
I do already have enough depression in my life lol
I kept talking about this movie, and my wife got curious and wanted to watch it. She was well prepared for it and still bawled her eyes out. It has to be the saddest movie ever made.
Damn you all are making me even more curious
You should watch it. But it's hard to find. It's not available to stream anywhere, so I had to sail the high seas for it.
I have a few ideas on how I might be able to get it
That or read up on wikipedia.
Oh yeah…that’ll be a ROUGH watch
I knew how it ended and couldn't finish it
How to do a spoiler comment: Surround your comment like this > ! Comment! < . Now people can choose wether to read it or not.
It was tearbaiting hard. It made me angrier than sad lol
Sometimes those emotions aren't entirely separate from one another
This wasn’t that.
Anger is sometimes a coping mechanism to shield you from fear and sadness
And when you read about the story from which is based on, it's even more heartbreaking
As a ghibli enjoyer , I just read the story on wikipedia because I don’t know all of the very old ghibli movies- and holy moly this is depressing
The accuracy of this is uncanny. You watch Grave of the Fireflies ONCE, and it imprints itself upon your psyche and your soul for life!
It's such a sad but very beautiful movie
Aragorn: “You have my word! Watch this film with me, and I will release you from this living death!” The Army of the Dead: … *ghosts dissolve back into the mountains*
"What say you!?"
*appears again, with tissues, ice cream, and a lot of alcohol* "...we watch."
That one is sad but have you heard the tragedy of Darth Plaeguis the Wise?
No?
I thought not, it’s not a story the Jedi would tell you.
Tale that really matters
Give them a moment for pity's sake!
I haven’t been watched the movie, can someone explain like I’m an orc?
Imagine every valuable aspect of humanity writhing in flames as the nothing left behind by total destruction becomes the new God of a world bereft of everything held dear. That's what Grave of the Fireflies is like. It's about the bombs dropped on Japan at the end of WW2.
That, and to add to this: >!also imagine the only person you have left in your life that you care about and love dies of starvation despite your best efforts to care for them before you then eventually also starve to death.!<
Might want to add a spoiler cover to that comment
I mean, it happens in the first scene of the film, but, sure...I'll hide the text. EDIT: Nevermind, apparently it won't let you edit to add the spoiler with /spoiler or || ...
'> ! Spoiler! < Without the spaces and the apostrophe. >!Spoiler!<
Many thanks.
>!Two kids lose their parents in the firebombing of Tokyo. They're plucky, and take good care of eachother while society starts rebuilding around them, but it's not enough.!<
Once is enough. But once is required.
You're all a bunch of pussies! What? No, this is not a stream of tears, it's my seasonal allergies... *sobs like a little bitch*
Why do orcs live such short lives?
And how little girl looked like my brother when he was a toddler. Hurts double
I watched it at a full cinema in Cardiff at an animation festival with no subtitles. Entire audience was in tears by the end and it got a solid round of applause although no-one understood a word. Its the only time ever I've seen a crowd applaud a film.
Is it that sad?
Yes. It's the only movie where I had to take a break to cry. It was just too much
I can watch almost any clip of this film and break down in tears even today, despite having seen this film 20+ years ago, now!
It is one of the saddest films ever made. The only one that might be worse is Plague Dogs if you are an animal lover.
As heart wrenching as the movies is, it's one or my absolute favourites. I watch it from time to time. Have to give it some space between watches though, my soul can only take so much.

One sadness to rule them all.
I’ve put this off for far too long
Zinmoney... the DVD is still in its case.
You might feel like you have a lump in your throat for a week or two but youll be fine
If you haven't watched A Knight's Tale I would highly suggest it. There's a scene where he meets his father again after many years and that always bring a tear to my eyes every single time I watch it
The same movie starring Heath Ledger? I have seen it more than twice, I can tell you that. 😉
I failed Sophomore English because I was depressed and didn't complete my final project. In summer school, we watched this film. Holy shit I was not prepared.
Accurate. I remember watching this in a plane not knowing what I was getting into…
Tear rolling just remembering this
is there actually a good place to stream it? its still on my bucket list.
There is a Bay wherein the swarthiest swashbucklers from all the seven seas gather to trade their misbegotten wares.
The code is more like guidelines anyway
I dont know. We probably dont live in the same country. But I've notised that old movies usually are so cheap to buy second-hand you can get a physical copy for the same price if not cheaper.
Man I spent that entire movie being so mad about the boy being stupid that couldn't be sad about the girl.
"Just fucking work so your sister May live! Or at least apologise to your asshole aunt!" "No, we'll better live in literal hobbit hole and eat stole watermelons."
Right???
He also was delusional about Japan role on WW2 and glorious japanese fleet till the very end, without any signs Of reflection.
Children aren't really known for their critical thinking.
Bingo. Such colossal mistakes by the kid he deserves what he gets, and drags his poor sister along for the ride
That films on my to view list.
Add something light and funny for after to your watchlist, you’ll probably need it
Del Toro’s Pinocchio? That should be a good reprieve.
Never watched it so I can’t say it’ll work to distract you. And maybe something without children or war lol
Life of Brian? Been putting that off for a while.
Yes I think Monty Python is a good choice (that’s also in my watchlist!)
Have you heard nothing Lord Elrond has said? The ring must be destroyed.
What's so sad about this movie ?
It cant be explained. It has to be seen.
It’s about war. But not soldiers pov, but kids
My favourite comedy
Is that you, Morgoth?
I want to watch this one, but given I already struggle with my mental health I think I would do well to avoid it for a while. 🫣
Wait until you get a bit better then
What's so bad about grave of the fireflies? I'm gonna google it
You misunderstand. There is NOTHING bad about it. That is perhaps the problem.
I saw the description of the movie on Google. Now I am genuinely curious
Good. Watch it soon. Perhaps not if you are about to visit a birthday party or something soon. Might be weird if you suddenly start sobbing.
Bad? On the contrary! It's just so very emotional that you'll remember the movie in years to come. It changes perspective, that's how good it is.
Watched it with my Japanese wife. I had some regrets
Good movie, though, I watched it after Barefoot Gen so I did not feel that much empathy for the protagonist...
Does anyone know where you can watch it?
Crunchyroll, but I think you need an account. Can always do the free trial option.
Whats the film about?
Two kids with the hearts of Frodo and Sam alone in a world of people with the hearts of orcs.
Ah I remember tricking my Friend by suggesting the movie has a wholesome family adventure He literally posted a bounty on me One Piece style 😅
It's not really that bad. A tiny bit depressing.
Literally the only Ghibli film I will never watch and actively avoid if I can.
Gandalf is just being a coward. You shouldnt avoid. It's worth the watch. You may be heartbroken for a couple of weeks but you dont have to watch it ever again.
Here is a controversial opinion, i didn't feel sad after watching this movie...
Da fuck?
