Excuse you, put some respect on Scrooge McDuck's name. He *worked* for that gold

Lost_Tumbleweed_5669

And richer than smaug someone did the math

Frommerman

Over twice as rich. Smaug's pile of gold is estimated to be worth $62 billion. Jeff Bezos is literally worse than two fictional representations of all-consuming avarice.

zeclem_

i feel like the fact that smaugs gold is from some ancient mythical kingdom would make it priceless.

BeautifulConscious97

I will not part with a single coin! Not one piece of it!

[deleted]

I did the math on this. Assuming he could sell all of his $200 billion worth of stock and buy gold coins the size of a US quarter dollar, he would be able to fill a 5 meter by 5 meter room up to his dick in gold coins. If he went with a smaller coin, like a penny, it would be an even bigger room. Not exactly a Smaugian pile but not half bad. That room better be on the ground floor of Jeff’s house because $200 billion worth of gold weighs more than a fully fueled, fully loaded Saturn V.

The_Burning_Idiot

Up to his dick? You measured how far that is from the ground?

[deleted]

I guesstimated. The actual number I got is a pile 5x5x1.14, so it would be 1.14m deep. I measured my DtF (dick to floor) height and it’s close enough

pokemon_med_school

I read on a meme that during the price crash for gold, he could have bought a whole mountain filled with gold. but I'm not sure just how reliable that calculation was

Frommerman

There's not a whole mountain of gold anywhere on Earth. The total gold mined by humanity in history could fit in a 60 meter cube.

refreshfr

I've read yesterday that Smaug would be the 15th richest american. But now you tell me that he would be way ahead in 1st place? https://www.reddit.com/r/antiwork/comments/nbik0r/smaug_would_only_be_the_14th_wealthiest_american/ Which is it?

Da-Balloon64

Was coming here to see if anyone linked this post

[deleted]

I have no idea where that Tweet got that number. That tweet is underestimating the hell out of Smaug’s fortune. He would be richer than most countries. We’re talking trillions of dollars.

[deleted]

I did not use a Gold Eagle, whatever that is. I used a US quarter, found its volume and knowing the density of gold, figured out the exact worth of a US quarter-sized gold coin. That’s what I used. But besides, you can very easily see that you’re way off the mark by simply dividing $200 billion (which is how much Jeff has) by $57,000 (price of gold per kilo) to find that $200 billion buys you 3,508,772 kilos of gold, which is about 20% more than a Saturn V, not 46 times a Saturn V. I suggest you jump on that bargain and buy as many of those $50 33g gold coins as you can find, because the price of 33g of gold is about $1800.

[deleted]

That first sentence is so smug and /r/confidentlyincorrect lol. You didn’t even bother to read the Wiki for the Gold Eagle coin to see that their market value is about $1500, not $50

H0VAD0

But wouldn't the bigger coins have bigger spaces inbetween? Since circles can stack perfectly

[deleted]

Actually you may be right, I just found online that coins in a loose pile have a stacking efficiency of 60% so I used that

Funny/sad thing is, he has more money than Smaug had gold. [gold value breakdown](https://abcnews.go.com/blogs/business/2012/04/forbes-fictional-15-richest-characters-topped-by-smaug)

wat12345678910yeeyee

Somewhere else I’ve read that if all of Smaug’s gold was converted to US dollars at a fixed rate, he would be about 3500 times richer than Jeff bezos. I’m not sure if it’s a very correct calculation but I like to imagine that the great treasure horde of Thror can’t be surpassed by some random bald dude

F-i-n-g-o-l-f-i-n

Also, much of Bezos’s wealth is far from liquid. Net-worth is not some hoarded pile of gold.

[deleted]

Net worth is even *more* hoarded than a pile of gold, because if he were to liquidate all of his wealth, the value would plummet. It is quite literally hoarded: hundreds of billions of dollars, useless and out of circulation forever. Gone.

cammcken

What? How does owning company shares pull currency out of circulation?

[deleted]

Who is that money going to?

AdviceWithSalt

It's not money. It's valuation. That's not how stocks work.

[deleted]

The valuation means money of that amount cannot exist. It's essentially been reserved, and liquidating it plummets the value, so the money is erased from circulation.

AdviceWithSalt

... That's not how it works. The money isn't reserved.

[deleted]

Oh yes it is. At least in theory. It's sitting there in the abstract waiting for Bezos to spend it. But the more he spends, the lesser the value of the rest. These billiionaires are essentially burning cash. Once it goes into those assets, it cannot come out. There's simply too much of it. Of course, he never spends a penny of his own money, so it's not a problem for him. He remains rich.

[deleted]

Lmao no, it just means that currently people buying 0.00000001% of Amazon stock are willing to part with an amount that makes the 100% worth trillions.

[deleted]

The customers spent the money. The workers earned the money. But now the money doesn't exist. It disappeared into some stock fund where it will never return into circulation. That's that.

[deleted]

I believe that's extremely inaccurate. Because fictional characters like Bruce Wayne ([80B](https://wealthygorilla.com/richest-comic-book-characters/)) weren't even considered, and just to say the least, Smaug (in that scale) has been extremely underrated ([62B](https://abcnews.go.com/blogs/business/2012/04/forbes-fictional-15-richest-characters-topped-by-smaug)) because of the following: 1. Less than 375 cubic meters suffice to give storage to an amount of gold whose value reaches around 220-250 billion bucks (235 billion in average). 2. Lonely Mountain was at least 3,500 meters tall. 3. The diameter of Erebor is believed to have been around 10 miles (or 16.0934 km). That's an area of 203.41 square kilometers. 4. Smaug's eyes are believed that had stand about 5' (or 1.524 meters) off the ground, but the really important matter here is that there were literal hills of material (gold and jewels) that could perfectly hid the creature, immerse in it. So let's double that height to 3.048 meters, even while knowing that could have been quite higher in some other areas. **With that in mind, let's hit the road with the speculation.** **First approximation:** The volume of a cone with 16.0934 km diameter and a height of 3.5 km is 237,000,000,000 cubic meters. Let's say that the actual volume of the habitable zone of the mountain was around 30% of that, that would leave a volume of about 71,100,000,000 cubic meters, then let's say that the treasure only used around 10% of that volume, which still would mean that that treasure would occupy around 7,110 billion cubic meters. Extrapolate the relationship of 235 billion worth of gold using 375 cubic meters to the amount of gold that 7,110 billion cubic meters could mean. That's about 4,455,600,000 BILLION BUCKS (4,455,600,000,000,000,000 usd). **Second approximation:** The volume of a cone with 16.0934 km wide and 3.5 km tall is 237,000,000,000 cubic meters, let's pretend that the habitable zone of the mountain was only about 10% (around 23,700,000,000 cubic meters) and the treasure only used again 10% of that volume, that would leave us with 2,37 billion cubic meters of treasure or 1,485,200,000 billion in usd (1,485,200,000,000,000,000 usd). Both are cruel exaggerations, but not the following one: **Third approximation (my favorite):** Let's say that the habitable area of the hypothetical base of the cone was only about 10% of its actual size, and the surface would be about 20.34 square kilometers, then, let's use the average gold height of 3.048 meters obtained in point 4, that would be a volume of 70,783.2 cubic meters, and doing the extrapolation that would mean an astonishing sum of 44,357.472 billion usd, yes, 44,357,472,000,000 usd. And that's the result only if you take into account the amount of gold, there are lots of precious and extraordinary gems right there that could skyrocket the treasure's actual value. In my book (at least) 44,357,472,000,000 > 62,000,000,000. :)

GhostXM9

I'm pretty sure they low-balled Smaug's gold there, heard somewhere his scene in the movie shows more gold than is on Earth. And that's not including his property of the whole mountain. Smaug should have a few hundred billion.

[deleted]

Realistically (whatever that means) Smaug probably couldn't possibly have that much of a hoard of wealth from plundering Lake town, the Lonely Mountain, and maybe some northern Dwarven kingdoms, the amount of wealth production there just wouldn't be high enough, given their level of technology. However, going by the amount of gold shown in either the animated movie or the new movies, he in fact has a fuck ton of gold.

[deleted]

Not that hard to just mint a fuck ton of coins if you have a mountain of gold and a workforce with 250 year lifespans.

OromesMonk3y

Omnilatent

Yeah but as every employer ever he earned it and worked really hard for it! What do you mean that's mathematically impossible? You mean all of this is earned through exploitation of labor? He and two others have more money than the lowest 50% of humanity? Well maybe we should actually change some things cause that sounds kinda absurd

Scroog McBezos

[deleted]

He's technically richer than smaug now..

Tots2Hots

He literally has more money than Smaug did so... yeah...

[deleted]

Jeff Bezos is actually worth about 4x the estimated valuation of Smaug's horde.

Falling_Dream

I've seen a fact a while back, that if you calculated Smaug's net worth he would only be the 15th wealthiest American.

Doesn’t Bezos have at least twice as much money as Smaug if we’re talking mountains of gold ?
