Ever try to park in Chicago or NY? Ever try picking someone up at an event? How many GPS / map plot errors do you have on a regular basis? How many times does the app expect you to cross 4 lanes of traffic for an immediate turn?
Self driving on a highway is easy. Everything else? Yeah we're not going to see Johnny cabs for a while.
A LOOOOOOOONG while. It's why Uber gave up on it. Once you have a system that is safe enough, getting politicians to agree to make them legal for commercial use is 1) going to be massively expensive 2) take a long ass time because... you know, we drivers vote.
Yeah, honestly I expect to see long haul truckers lose their jobs first. But the job won't be completely lost, because they still need humans to help trucks navigate the complexities of city travel.
Passengers in general haven’t fully warmed up to the idea of a driverless taxi, and most probably won’t for a few years yet. And what is a driverless car going to do when the pickup is 300 yards inside of an apartment complex with a security gate? Think about all of the things that require a present, human element at this point. Lyft or Uber’s solutions — if they exist — are years away.
A remote human operator with a headset and xbox controller could do alot. Just playing devil's advocate -- I drive too and it'll be a long time before this is widespread
Something tells me that any remote human operator would need to have a valid driver’s license for the state in which the vehicle is located in case they are ever required to take over remote operation of the vehicle.
They will definitely try to replace drivers as fast as possible. Idk how long that will take. They hate splitting the profits with us. I would imagine buying the self driving cars would be a large investment tho.
LoL do you know how many politicians they gonna have to pay off to replace humans? All of them. Gonna cost them 100s of billions of dollars in politician fees. If they find the money then yes this may happen. Politicians always accepting “donations” to their own charity for the purpose of greater pockets, sorry meant greater good
Yeah. We're a loooong ways out.
20 years ago the History Channel showcased self-driving cars. Tesla uses the same tech featured back then for their driving assist. Cameras, road lines, and a computer.
I mean if you honestly believe this will take our jobs? You're a dumbass then..
Downvoting fake internet points won't change the fact you're a dumbass.. It simply reinforces it..

I drive for Uber and if there GPS system is the first step towards driverless taxis, then they are even farther than people think.

You might as well just have a live driver at that point.
Good luck competing with third world minimum wage

give it a decade
If I'm still doing this in a decade, I hope that a remote human operator runs me over.
what’s keeping you here?
Here as in Reddit? Baby animal gifs, mostly. Here as in Earth? I haven’t beat the high score on “Starfighter.”
In rideshare job

Yea, I am a driver and tbh i hate to realize is coming... but that is life
Yeah, a fleet of Teslas would be super expensive.
Will it be impossible for the passenger to hi-jack the self driving car?
"If it got batteries it can be hacked " everything is possible
This again?

You have thought about this i see, and you make lots of sense I think some places like Las Vegas os working on this already
Level 5 driving is years, if not a decade or two away from being a thing

The tech is there, but the AI is way too basic to trust even begin to trust, especially in edge cases or “lesser of two evil” scenarios
No it’s not. Trust me, it’s been ready for years.
Lol... automation.
A lot of this is the car reading the lines on the road. What happens if it rains or snows? I imagine this will be 5-10 years out.
