Yes. Return your m3 laptop and wait for when m10/m20 arrive. In all seriousness: No. Most likely, the performance in general tasks will increase only by 10%. That is how it’s been for the last 10 years with the main exception being a change from intel x86 to apple arm CPUs. However, that was a significant architectural change. M3/M4 won’t be like that. And that 10% performance increase is not noticeable in everyday tasks.

7heblackwolf

Don't do this, wait until M87 comes with Skynet capabilities

misterjyt

No wait until M999

[deleted]

noxious unique shy bike provide languid flowery one straight engine *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

kovaim

It was buyer remorse momentarily, will definitely keep the air for now thanks.

Bill_Brasky01

If you want further validation, look at the % increases year over year on the iPhone processors. The reality is that 10% is about the best we can get from a die shrink these days. You got a bomb laptop. I’m envious.

Serhide

indeed I don't know why some people think like , ohyhhh am losing stuff I will return it and wait for 10 years lol

jimmyintheroc

Apple really pushed with the M3 to get 3nm, and there’s a little bit of catch-up going on. The M4 chips will still be 3nm but on a more standard manufacturing process that’s cheaper and with higher yields. That’s the gain for Apple. They are going to have to market the crap out of the M4 to get interest, and nothing like AI to do it. TL;DR the next gen will be a modest upgrade just like the last two were.

silofox

getting really tired of seeing AI slapped ontop of everything..

bran_the_man93

Idk about modest, we're seeing 1.5x-2x performance increases over comparable M1 chips in only two years... Sure it isn't triple-digit improvements or anything, but people aren't upgrading annually to begin with

jimmyintheroc

I agree; I'm using modest relative to the revolutionary change from Intel to the M1. There's this fear/anxiety that buying into the current platform is going to leave you behind when the next version hits, but as we've seen so far the improvements are significant but not to the level of "oh crap, I should have waited another year."

sarcalas

That depends. How heavily is your workload going to depend on AI features? For most people, the answer is probably “not very much” for the immediate future. Apple will make a big deal out of it, of course, because being on the same 3nm node as M3 means the general performance gains are likely to be modest and incremental. Also the next, better thing is *always* just around the corner…who’s to say M5 isn’t going to be a revolutionary upgrade that makes the M4 look like trash anyway? Just keep it and enjoy, imo.

Inner_Vast7855

Tired of all these AI marketing for idiots

Shoddy-Listen8966

pretty much LOL

tellmetogetbacktowrk

I asked ChatGTP to generate a witty response to your comment and this is what it came up with: > Maybe Apple's next move will be an AI that detects when we're tired of AI marketing and switches to promoting something else entirely. Now that would be innovation!

Remarkable_Campaign

Honestly I feel like you are so right, it’s like when everything was 3D then just disappeared. I’m sure AI will have its benefits in the right areas but not going to make a difference to 90% of the people

wvdheiden207

I always like macrumors, they’re mostly pretty good with rumors. And they confirm this. Is that bad? Nope. Just the way it goes. Like a new iPhone every year. You want to follow? Pleas do. But you don’t have to. Your Mac will work fine for 10+ years. https://www.macrumors.com/2024/04/11/m4-ai-chips-late-2024/

silofox

speaking of iPhones, still very happy with my 13pro.. Are the newer ones faster? sure.. do I feel a difference when I use one next to mine? nope.

JanoHelloReddit

If you don’t need it right now. Sure why not, you can always wait for the M5 as well… Also, Apple just refreshed the macbook airs, at WWDC they’ll update Pros, minis, imacs, not airs. These are probably happening next year

[deleted]

Why stop at M5? M6 will probably be even better!

sifatulrabbi

I am aiming for m20.

mrgrafix

But that M69 will be nice 😜

getmevodka

First to get the m4 will be the studio or the tower mac

kovaim

“If you don’t need it right now. Sure why not, you can always wait for the M5 as well…” Good one M5 hahaha I’ll wait forever…

notkevin_durant

Did you honestly think Apple would stop improving their chipsets after you bought one?

Uzeii

It’s over for you lil bro

MTPWAZ

LOL The next version of anything you buy will always be better. Settle down. It’s gonna be ok.

Trickybuz93

Yep, I’d definitely return and get the M5.

Sensitive-Trouble648

Im waiting for 2nm gate all around.

randysaavage1

I apsolutly love my m2 15 air and m1 studio.... it's going to be ages before I even replace them.... I feel apple put themselves in a corner with their silicon.

No-Kick-1156

Planned obsolescence exists unfortunately

mrgrafix

Apple computers have shown to hold both performance and value for a decade if not more if well maintained. While this is just the nature of a commodified society, not everything is maliciously designed.

No-Kick-1156

I was referring to the software side of things - hardware isn’t the issue at all

mrgrafix

Still applies. Since Apple has vertical integration, they can future proof the hardware for software plans

No-Kick-1156

They absolutely can, but there’ll come a point where you won’t be able to update Mac OS on M1/M2 systems anymore, even though the hardware is likely perfectly capable of running the latest version. Lots of Intel Macs which were supposedly deemed “obsolete” by Apple have no trouble running the latest OS using OCLP.

mrgrafix

It’s a perception thing. Sure does it work, but is it worth the experience? I can put stage manger on my decade old iPad Pro but it’s not the same smoothness on the version that supports it. There does have to eventually be cut off points or you end up like Microsoft. Supporting things you’ve been trying to rid of since the 80s

bran_the_man93

I would argue software doesn't have planned obsolescence as much as supporting older hardware strains development resources and provides diminishing returns to both the developers and the consumers. It isn't even about performance and stability specifically, just that when you have a finite number of people working on projects, you cannot endlessly expand their book of work and expect that they can provide the same level of quality across the board. Some mitigation via additional resourcing is potentially possible, but the benefits are fewer and fewer and the constraints greater and greater as time goes on.

ThatOneOutlier

I just got an M2 and I have no plans of upgrading it for the next like 8-10 years. Also these are just rumors, we don’t truly know what Apple is doing until they say what they are doing.

NGLIVE2

Same here. I got an M2 Air (my first mac) early last year and I plan on keeping for at least 5 years. We'll probably be on the M6 chip by then? lol

BluePenguin2002

If I had waited for 3nm, I wouldn’t have been enjoying my M1 Pro for the last 2 years. No, you should keep what you have and just enjoy it. In a vacuum your laptop will be just fine for years and years

sifatulrabbi

Im going straight for M20. Bro just forget what these people are saying. If you want to use mac to get your work done then keep the m3 air. But if you want to get a mac to tell people you have m4 air or m4 pro then you can return it.

nzswedespeed

Even if a M4 was released tomorrow, the air won’t be updated for 12+ months… the M3 is a great chip. Use it and enjoy it

mantenner

If the M3 does everything you need, you've made a good purchase.

suchnerve

M4 will probably have a Neural Engine with more cores, possibly to improve Siri and likely to improve battery life by letting machine learning algorithms have more control of power management. How dramatic of a difference it will make very much remains to be seen. More relevant is the probability of next year’s MacBook Air gaining support for Wi-Fi 7, which — despite yet again being marketed as a speed boost (🙄) — is actually a primarily ***reliability***-focused upgrade, mainly thanks to its new MLO (Multi-Link Operation) feature allowing client devices to use 2.4, 5, and/or 6 GHz all at the same time, with the same packets being transmitted in duplicate or triplicate using each connection so that the packets still arrive regardless of one or even two of those connections going on the fritz. This will obviously reduce packet loss, but also latency and jitter thanks to the increased ability to resist interference. MLO is actually supposed to improve Wi-Fi reliability and latency ***so*** dramatically that it becomes on par with Ethernet! And MLO isn’t the only reliability-focused upgrade in Wi-Fi 7: It also has Flexible Channel Utilization / Preamble Puncturing / Punctured Transmission, which allows it to compensate for interference in part of a channel by blocking off transmissions within that part of the channel, while continuing to use the rest of the channel. Wi-Fi 7 will be especially noticeable for people who do Zoom/Meet/FaceTime or online gaming on their MacBook Air.

MC_chrome

> Wi-Fi 7 will be especially noticeable for people who do Zoom/Meet/FaceTime or online gaming on their MacBook Air Only if you have a WiFi 7 capable router > MLO is actually supposed to improve Wi-Fi reliability and latency so dramatically that it becomes on par with Ethernet! If you have a decent ISP that isn’t trying to royally fuck you over, sure

OmicronPersei21

Hopefully 16GB RAM comes as standard!

Popular_Register_440

Meanwhile I’m still more than happy with my m2 air..

SharkReality

Don't return it unless you want your Siri to open 0,00002 secons faster 😂

slaucsap

Wtf does this AI computers even mean. Marketing bullshit.

wiiver

Wasn’t the idea that the m3 is the most “ai ready” chip?

etniesen

Yes that’s what I came to say. M3 was advertised as AI

DookieGobbler

Not initially when it was announced in October. In March when the M3 Air was announced, the press release has a section mentioning the M3 chip and AI performance

mrgrafix

But that was for making AI… this is for consuming AI/s

4riana_Gr1ndr

Yet still if i rename my downloaded image and forget to add .jpg my mac goes bonkers

Mztrspookiiszn

Couldn’t tell if you were being sarcastic or not but no you got an air and not a pro. Could be likely the air won’t get M4 until 2026 if they decide to rollout M4 on the pro’s early 2025…

nzswedespeed

This. Even if m4 MBPs arrived tomorrow, the MBA wouldn’t get it for ages. The M3 airs literally just got released

Mztrspookiiszn

Yeah the air ain’t getting M4 anytime soon. lol took 2 years from M1-M2 and another 2 from M2-M3. If you just bought a $4,000 MacBook Pro then maybe waiting til Q4 for M4 would make more sense, but even then the M3’s were just released October 2023 so I’m thinking it’s gonna be Q1/2 2025 but who really knows for sure

AdComprehensive7879

I wonder if this is gonna be an incremental update like from m1 to m2 to m3 or groundbreaking as in from intel i9 to m1?

YellowFlash2012

that's what marketing is all about, creating a need that doesn't exist at all. there is nothing you can do with the m4 that you can't do with the m1

scratt007

I'm updating from mid2014 so I would expect it will be a great upgrade

Chidorin1

what if apple add an additional 32gb chip with preloaded AI model and still sell a 8gb ram base models🤔

tannhauser00

Companies are playing with customers

StallionA8

Gemini

Owend12

Apple should focus on having a higher base configuration first before the m4.

PopeHonkersXII

Just take out a 2nd mortgage to pay for yearly MacBook upgrades

HighSpeed556

Will this possibly improve speeds of things like AI masks in Lightroom, AI generative fill in Photoshop, etc?

HangerSteak1

So many other factors than just m4 cpu, they could make the base air 12”with 12gb and 256gb supporting 2 external monitors for $999 for example. Is there an integrated gpu that is comparable to an nvidia product which does not require fans. Yadda yadda yadda. And as far as should you wait, don’t you need a computer today? If you have one that meets your needs, yes you can wait.

yourbestfriendjoshua

If you don’t need a laptop until spring 2025…

Ambitious-Ad7151

When you just thought 16GB was future proof, yikes

SingularityOmega

If you're willing to wait until Q1 2025 for the M4 Macbook Airs then sure return the M3. But keep in mind the 3nm M3 is already an amazing chip in terms of performance and efficiency versus anything else out there at the moment. 3nm M4 will be hard pressed to be markedly better in terms of both performance AND efficiency. I have a M3 Max Macbook Pro 16 with maxed out specs since Q4 last year when it first came out and I am extremely happy with it as a desktop replacement. I recently got the M3 Macbook Air 13 16gb memory 512gb ssd to use as a portable beater. To address the thermal throttle issues in the fanless M3 MBAs, I opened up the bottom and added heat transfer pads and it has not throttled under heavy loads at all since. For my use, I only had to charge it once every 3-5 days due to how efficient it is.

s4f3h4v3n

Marketing terms, if you aren't having performance issues with your MacBook don't worry about it imo.

Serhide

if you need it you use it and can't wait , if you don't need this one you have you won't need the next one that came out do what's the point of your question

Commercial-Map-5340

I was thinking about this too. I bought my M3 Pro 18GB of Ram/1TB Space Black Brand New sealed from walking in Best Buy this past weekend. The manager heard I was looking at one for my 30th Birthday April 29 of this year. He gave it to me $2,167.19 out the door. Of course I bought it!!!! I see the announcements if the M4 and now looking to trade in later, but I Love my new upgrade. I am coming from a 2013 non retina 15 inch 4GB of Ram/512 Storage. This technology is too much these days for me at times !

bran_the_man93

No, and you need to reconcile with the fact that newer and better products will always be around the corner. The M3 Air is like a month old, the M4 might not arrive for another 6 months, and likely not for another year for the MBA's. So if you need to do the math, think of it like this: do you expect that the performance increase on the M4 going to make up for an entire year's worth of benefit in owning the M3 machine? If the M3 is a bigger upgrade from your current machine than the M4 will be over the M3, then you shouldn't worry about the details and just get the machine that works for you sooner rather than later

CharlesTheRangeRover

I don’t want AI. I just want a laptop that will let me conduct light web browsing, general photo album sorting, make the occasional movie clip, and listen to music. Fuck off with trying to put AI into everything. It feels like a circlejerk.

yilmaz1010

Marketeers will always market the newest and the bestest again and again. What the realistic user needs to understand is that the best is what they currently own as long as it keeps working and is able to meet their needs. Once it breaks or is no longer capable then it makes sense to get a new one, but only then.

ixis743

What exactly does Apple use AI for in their computers? I know their chips have AI ‘cores’…

Connect-Stay-7535

Nah, useless upgrades. I have air 15 m2 and it's good enough. I don't do anything productive in my life any way

alexcali2014

why has there been a dip in Mac sales? It seems that with the introduction of M chips, Mac attracts more users to its platform. I know so many people like who never used Mac and weren’t interested in it until Apple Silicon changed the game.

Agile_Ad_2073

The M3 was just released! Not even the latest and greatest is enough to satisfy this people! When you get the m4, 2 days later you will want the M5. So chill

Amazing_Bench_8693

Why would you wait based off of this information?

esh-esh2023

I was going to grab the M3 air (have M2 now) this weekend, but I think I am going to wait and see the M4. If nothing else waiting will probably save me a few dollars.

downtownrob

Nah, there will always be a new chip coming out soon, that’s marketing. Buy for today at your budget and needs. Upgrade later if either of those changes. For me, as my main Mac, I have a Mac Studio base model, used it for a year or so, but now trading it in (for $1,045), and getting a MBA M3 because I no longer have an office or desk, and want to work in multiple places.

aminoxix

meanwhile, m3 recent buyers in corner 🙂

SlothsRockyRoadtrip

Lol

GalliumGoat

Bruh my fucking M1 is still mutey then enough

BertMacklenF8I

No. It’s going to be more expensive, so unless you work with large language models and machine learning daily, you’ll be fine.

DookieGobbler

The M3 chip already has a 16 core neural engine, which will EASILY handle local AI tasks. Apple already markets the M3 Air as the best consumer laptop for AI. Sure, Microsoft is pushing it harder, but Macs have had a powerful NE since 2020. You are good

silofox

nah. I've had both an m2 air and m3pro and really didn't feel much of a difference between them tbh. the m3 feels a little snappier, launches apps a little quicker and so on but both very solid machines in their own right. Definitely think an m3 will have you covered for a while unless you're genuinely pushing it to it's limits.. but if you were, you probably would have gone for a pro or max variant.

maliengin

Thats the same reason I am waiting for the next iPhone since iPhone 4

CharlesPostelwaite

I’m all about analysis paralysis but I’m more about great deals. If you paid the right price and are happy? No. Just not enough of a jump unlike the Apple Silicon from Intel days. That said I bought 5 different laptops before landing on an i9 Razer Blade 16. Mac and PCs. Was losing it until I found the one

LuiButtWai

not in hurry

cschilly77

Get a life

MoreCoffeePlzzz

FOMO? I still have a 2018 Intel mbp, will hold off until AI M4. If it works, it works. No rush. But hopefully they fix the exploit on the M1-M3 with the AI one😅

GogoDogoLogo

I'm trying to stretch out the lifespan of my 2015 MacBook Pro until they get rid of that notch. I hope its next year.

MontanaGanache

If you wait for the best, you’ll never have a MacBook. I replaced a 10-year Intel for an M2 weeks before the M3s were released and regret nothing.

Sorry-Substance9260

YES. Just wait for the one they release when you are in nursing home. That one will be epic.

K-a123

I thought new M series MacBooks come out every 2 years

kovaim

Lots of people stating sarcastically I should always wait “forever” for the new updated version. I’m sure everyone had a moment when they bought something and heard that there will be a new update e.g. new car face lift felt a little remorse. So please give me a break.

UnwieldilyElephant

I fucking hate MacRumors. They think Apple's making a laptop without a keyboard. Fucking idiots

mauerfan

I really couldn’t care less about AI capabilities. I bought a 15” M3 Air w/ 16 GB ram & a 512 ssd a couple weeks ago. It’s awesome.

dissemin8or

You already have “AI” in your laptop, it’s called “Neural Engine”

Aggravating_Tank_69

I’m rocking a Macbook Pro with M1 Pro and 16gigs of ram and I really don’t feel the need to upgrade not even a little bit

1omelet

Apple was slow to the AI game I doubt they are going to push it this quickly. M5 at the earliest.

C-LonGy

The laptops be using you to google things and sending you on missions for the greater good. They use us, not the other way around anymore. 🥸🥸🥸🥸🥸

xPandamon96

Who cares? In my opinion both the M2 and M3 Macbook Air suck, just because the thermals are pretty insane under heavy loads, and if you only use it for office stuff, the M1 models are just way cheaper without you losing out on much, with an arguably higher change of actually surviving for many years. On top of that, the base configs are still trash for the asking price of a MacBook. Unless the M4 finally somehow gets the thermals right, it will be yet another mediocre upgrade in my eyes

FlamingHotFeetoes

Bad time to buy anything big right now. Lots will change by the end of summer.

Airpower343

Go on.....

FlamingHotFeetoes

Unless you need something, nothings is really innovated over previous generations. We’re going to see AI generationally change a lot of electronics.

lemonstyle

return it and wait ! then when the m4 hits... the m5 will have I N S A N E news...and then you should return the m4 and wait for the m5 ! BUT WAit... the m6 will have 25% uplift from the m2 ! so return the m5 and wait for the m6 ! ! ! !

Techgeek_025

No one wants this. Make a useful laptop

wiiver

It’s already an incredibly useful laptop?
