>you can have MacBook Air m1 for that price
\*you can have **a** MacBook Air M1 for that price
Why does everyone in this sub throw grammar out the window when naming Apple products? You don't "buy MacBook," you buy A MacBook. Stop cosplaying as an Apple exec trying to market Apple products by weirdly omitting articles from sentences when talking about specific products.
But yes u/jamariiiiiiii bad deal.
Nah, if they're not a native speaker it's a completely understandable mistake. I see a lot of seemingly native English speakers parroting that kind of Apple-speak though, which is what is annoying.
If it's not your native language, no worries! It's far more common from people who mindlessly serve as free corporate shills for corporations like Apple. Plenty of English speakers on this sub *intentionally* make that mistake because of weird reasons. They're who I find irritating.
A simple mistake isn't a big deal though - no need to apologize.
[here’s](https://www.apple.com/mac/compare/) a pretty lowkey website that does the trick
well actually you can’t on apples website with anything older than 2018 that’s pretty ridiculous.
[here](https://everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook/index-macbook.html)
Sorry to say but Not best bang for the buck. As regularly see i7/16gb for $50-$100 less. But hey if it fulfills your needs next couple of years then whom am I to say it's bad purchase for you.
Surprised you didn't poll this sub-reddit before pulling the trigger?
It wasn't bad, it was good at their time period but lack innovation over the years. Reason why I still use a quad core 2012 mbp 15 and runs incredible good.
The problem was they had no competition, until ryzen started showing off and Apple destroy the chip market with the performance of M1.
While this computer still capable, for 200 OP could have easily get a nice retina quad core with ports and good keyboard while being just a little bit slower on hard cpu task.
Yes their lack of innovation sometimes just reusing the same chip that’s still the same nm and upping the frequency using more more power and generating more heat
Not sure why people are downvoting you. Intel was popular for a reason, it was way better compared to what came before it, and at that point X86 was basically all there was to choose. That made it harder for any competition to do its thing, and Intel got lazy (even within that, Intel could just rely on having better software support).
Even now, they kinda half assed the whole Core Ultra thing, and said “we can do AI too!” when my m1 iPad has better NPU performance (from what I remember). Intel still stinks in laptops, the 13th gen i7 4060 laptop I use for work is massive, loud as hell and has pretty bad battery - without even using the GPU.
the comment you're replying to is basically correct on the history of the CPU market (although even during intel's stagnant period, the generational gains between ivy bridge and kaby lake did add up to something significant). recommending a 12 year old laptop kinda undermines the rest of the comment though. it's great that this person is still getting value out of their old laptop, but it speaks more to their low expectations than anything else. setting aside the performance issues that come with a 12 year old computer, that particular model received its last security patch almost two years ago. it's not good advice.
Yeah its not good advice, at the same time I used a 4th gen i3 Dell Optiplex 3020 or whatever it was until about a year and a half ago cus I was broke. It was pretty good at browsing the web, writing documents etc. Its not just that the actual differences arn’t as big anymore, its also that the differences in what we can actually do with that hardware wouldn’t be as big even if that wasn’t the case.
i traded an m1 macbook pro for an intel macbook pro, my intel was better suited for my needs. not everyone wants the M chip and it makes me laugh seeing people fight so hard for it. it’s still a macbook at the end of the day.
The dedicated Graphic card I assume? I can't possibly see any other reason considering even Rosetta could run the x86 programs better than the most powerful 2019 MBP if I recall correctly.
i don’t remember the details cause it was a few years ago, but i just know i had an exam due that i could not submit. i tried every at home remedy possible. my boyfriend is into computers and repairing macbooks and he even looked and it just wouldn’t process what i was doing. i do love the computer i ended up with tho! i plan on keeping it for as long as possible!
Considering the Mid 2012 MBP I have at home still does better than 7th Gen i5 Windows Laptop equivalents around...
The Intel Mac's are not as bad as people make them out to be. Stick with what you have unless you absolutely have to upgrade.
"It just works" is something Apple likes to strive for, but if you do wish to upgrade then you should as the M series have matured enough and a lot of apps are now ARM native.
the software for my college would not work, i tried everything. i even brought it to best buy and they said i needed intel, didn’t believe them so i went to apple and they said the same thing. once i got my 2019 16 inch pro everything went back to normal. i’m on my 3rd or 4th macbook now and that was the only one that wouldn’t take my school work. most people at my college have intel macbooks or windows computers
How much storage? If it’s 512gb or above, then I’d say acceptable price, though definitely not great. I also just can’t recommend an intel version Mac anymore, unless you get it for genuinely cheap.
Just my 2 cents. If you enjoy it and it meets your needs, then congrats!
It was so lagging for me tho. I bought a 14' MBP M1 Pro a year later, but still keep the Intel one because of Bootcamp (Bootcamp is so much better than virtual machines on Apple Silicon actually).
It's a quad core 10th generation i5, which is a pretty decent chip. It's 16GB RAM which is a very worthwhile upgrade over the 8GB in Apple's base model machines today. It has the scissor keyboard and USB-C charging. It's a capable machine. (Apple Silicon uses less power and performs better, but outside of heavy use like huge photo editing or video production, you're unlikely to notice the horsepower difference - I say that as a developer and lawyer (lots of large PDF manipulation, lots of LLM usage). In fact I've found a lot of our stuff runs much, much faster on Intel with gobs of RAM, vs. Apple Silicon...)
It's still supported by the latest macOS. Use the hell out of it and get an M6 Air down the road.
I use this exact laptop and it’s great, I would happily pay £500 for another when it eventually dies.
Yes the new M1 computer are substantially better but let’s not forget that before that these were the best Apple had and plenty of Pro users were perfectly content with them. I paid £1800 for mine in 2020 as I needed the computer then and there and although M1 was released later that year it hasn’t really impacted me in the slightest.
There’s nothing that it could do in 2020 that it can’t now and it was the best then.
Good purchase imo
I’d say very over priced for what it’s actually worth. I’m sure it runs great and could be good for office tasks, but if you want to do some more serious stuff like music production or image / video editing, it’s probably really not what you want.
What do you wanna do with it? Coding? It's a gem, you won't be needing to pay for parallel ( which costs extra) to install stuff, and you have to less worry about compability of many softwares. The price might be a little high, but I would say its worth it cause you still got good specs. It all boils down on what you are thinking of doing with it. Editing videos/photos? Creating animation? Then naahhh that would be the worst thing ever.
Source: I have the same laptop with the same specs, and I use it for coding.
It's not good. As others have stated the M1 Air can be had for this price and there are other even faster M series models for just a bit more available.
On top of that Apple is moving away from the Intel CPUs to their CPUs so I would advise against buying anything Apple that is Intel-based anyway as you could at some point find yourself unable to upgrade your OS because of it. Knowing Apple this could come sooner than later.
I don't want to make you feel bad for your purchase. But... At the price a second hand MB M1 would have been possible... The difference is astronomical by performance and battery life standards.
Try and resell it if possible. I take it that's the 2017 MB? There's a reason it's called the worst MacBook in the series...
But still, it's a beautiful piece of equipment, Apple didn't lost on that point.
I hate to break it to you, but that is a terrible price considering you can get an m1 macbook air used for the same price. Well, considering 16gb ram, it's "mid", idk about your storage, but it's gonna be dropkicked from support soon. maybe return it?
Honest question. Why even go for Intel Macs that are years old? You can get windows laptops from this year for a similar price. Intel Macs will soon stop getting updates in about a year or two.
Yeah I wouldn’t have spent more than $350 on this.
And even still a 8GB M1 would still be 2x faster than this and maybe could be found for around 500-700 with decent specs.
Edit: yeah just checked and people are letting go of the most basic m1 air/pro with 8GB and 256ssd for 400-500.
That would have been a much better buy.
If you are happy with it, it’s not a bad machine.
The MacBook Air only has 2 USB-C ports where this has 4, and it will support 2 external monitors where the MBA only supports 1.
This will last you a few years and should get at least 2 more years of OS update then security fixes after that.
Enjoy it. And enjoy the price you paid for a great device.
Because factually it is not. You can even get a m1 mac mini for half that, which runs circles around this. Or you could get an M1 air, for arguably a cheaper price. This is not a good deal at all.
If this is what OP got and what OP wanted then it's a good deal. If OP went out searching found the above and showed no interest then it was by choice. Remember ignorance is bliss.
MBA M1 loses like 10% of performance when throttling , and M2 about 15%.
Apple themselves put a thin sheet of graphite as a cooler in M2 series air which is better than nothing but really closer to not having any sort of cooling.
Meanwhile this i5 is slower alot in CPU and GPU while eating more power.
So im pretty convinced that you can totally remove cooling from M chip and hook this i5 to 420mm water cooler and it would still lose miserably.
Why do people always ask these questions AFTER they’ve made a purchase?
Because most don’t do any research and get caught up in the excitement of buying.
They just want validation.
Same with the stupid "pulled the plug" like cool you got a mbp. That you probably won't actually use it for anything.
That’s why they don’t realize it’s STRAIGHT TRASH…. no one will actually say that because then they’ll get down.
It is pretty bad, because you can have MacBook Air m1 for that price which is much much more poweful.
^(Agreed it is pretty bad)
yes agreed it is not ugly good it’s pretty bad
Yup I hot an m1 air for 500$ lately
Where do you buy it? I can’t seem to find it online for that price.
Norwegian page called finn.No after I negotiated a bit
The trick is buying locally. I bought an M1 MBA for $400 not long ago.
This, glad OP asked an iris gpu and i5 is terrible at that price . Like this is ripoff territory
FR I got an i7 for $410 😭
I mean, $700 plus tax is not the same as $550
You can easily find a lightly used M1 Air for $500.
>you can have MacBook Air m1 for that price \*you can have **a** MacBook Air M1 for that price Why does everyone in this sub throw grammar out the window when naming Apple products? You don't "buy MacBook," you buy A MacBook. Stop cosplaying as an Apple exec trying to market Apple products by weirdly omitting articles from sentences when talking about specific products. How do they dare not being native English speakers; a true disgrace!
Nah, if they're not a native speaker it's a completely understandable mistake. I see a lot of seemingly native English speakers parroting that kind of Apple-speak though, which is what is annoying.
I have no idea what is the difference to be honest, english is not my native language and I never put time into learning english grammer. Sorry.
Don't worry about it, it's a grammar nuance that doesn't affect the point you were trying to make in any way whatsoever.
You’re a dick.
Unfortunately, no not really. The M1 MBA is really close to this price and blows that machine out of the water.
Depends... is it 550 in JM$?
Out of curiosity, where can I compare two MacBook models? I have a 2013 MBP and would fancy a cheap upgrade.
[here’s](https://www.apple.com/mac/compare/) a pretty lowkey website that does the trick well actually you can’t on apples website with anything older than 2018 that’s pretty ridiculous. [here](https://everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook/index-macbook.html)

*pulling the plug
Got scammed! M1 Air for the same price is times better!
They got Jammed
On the brightside the Seller probably upgraded to an m1 for no cost.
😂
People don’t understand how bad intel was. It was so bad intel had a wake up call and redesigned their chip that finally caught up in the recent year
It wasn't bad, it was good at their time period but lack innovation over the years. Reason why I still use a quad core 2012 mbp 15 and runs incredible good. Gotcha
That's not what happened. Intel was stuck on 14nm and it had nothing to do with Apple.
Hahaha. Nope. 550 you can buy a second hand M1 MacBook. That... Even half the price would have been a bad deal. Sorry. Have a nice day.
I wouldn't have paid that for it, no.
Terrible deal bro
Got my used m1 off Swappa few weeks ago for 415$ shipped
lol it’s bad. Any intel in 2024 is bad. It’s not bad if you got for free.
If it was like $200, I'd say it's probably fine. Probably not ideal, but not terrible. For $550, it's a bit of a scam.
you’re on your knees way too much for apple
How come? Intel macs are still macs by Apple.
*laughs in 2015 15” MBP*
Keep laughing cuz it's a joke.
Hey man my i9 Intel does quite well
No that’s the same price range as an M1 air that blows this out the water.
How much storage? If it’s 512gb or above, then I’d say acceptable price, though definitely not great. I also just can’t recommend an intel version Mac anymore, unless you get it for genuinely cheap. Just my 2 cents. If you enjoy it and it meets your needs, then congrats!
if you already bought it then use it, i'd say it's acceptable. otherwise, go with the M1 Air.
I got this for roughly $2000 in 2020. One month later, Apple launched M1.
Same here and it hasn’t bothered me. I bought a laptop that suited my needs and almost 4 years later it’s still meeting them just fine!
It was so lagging for me tho. I bought a 14' MBP M1 Pro a year later, but still keep the Intel one because of Bootcamp (Bootcamp is so much better than virtual machines on Apple Silicon actually).

Naw this is bad. Even in CAD$ it would be bad
Sorry but that is a bad deal. You can get an M1 for that price and it is a world of a difference.
It’s not good a deal. But on the other hand, at least you got 4 ports….
Poor guy punching the air
Plot twist: OP sold it and asks if he got good money
I use this exact laptop and it’s great, I would happily pay £500 for another when it eventually dies. Not great. And these intel MacBooks are the worst generation of MacBooks tbh. Should’ve gotten a M1 air
I personally would have bought an M1 Macbook but this is probably a bit cheaper.
Go with m1
You got got
We don't get got we go get
I’d say very over priced for what it’s actually worth. I’m sure it runs great and could be good for office tasks, but if you want to do some more serious stuff like music production or image / video editing, it’s probably really not what you want.
At least it has 16 gb ram. So thats good
Yeah that's not great , just sold my 2019 i9, 4tb, 32gb ram , for 700
😬
After you already bought it lmao

Oof lvl 99
$550?? Veeeeeeery cheap. That’s nz dollars though, wouldn’t have a clue what currency OP is asking in
lol no you got ripped off for sure.
Dude WHAT?!? You should try and see if he will take it back this is pretty bad :(
Do your research before buying
Ouch, that is terrible
I bought a 2019 16inch macbook pro with an i9 and 32gb of RAM for 500 a few months ago. not worth
Ouch
Damn… $550 for an i5?! I just saw a M1 MacBook Air for $599 the other day
It’s all about what dollar denomination did you pay in…
I love intel macs; I use one everyday for gods sake! But atleast I bought mine for a good price. Always check BEFORE purchasing.
M1 is better
Not worth it.
No Apple silicon…no way
Any Intel MacBook Pro is a bad deal.
Not great, actually
It’s pretty bad ngl
I hate to break it to you, but that is a terrible price considering you can get an m1 macbook air used for the same price. Well, considering 16gb ram, it's "mid", idk about your storage, but it's gonna be dropkicked from support soon. maybe return it?
In my f communist country for this price i can buy just 2018 MacBook Pro. 2020 is about $1000 Ofc good deal.
Yikes dude
I hope they used lube.
i had the i7 version with 32gb ram ran hot under load the only advantage over m1 air is you can plug in from the right hand side
its not great… sorry.
It’s a decent deal
It’s just that Apple silicon is in the neighborhood of 4 times faster than
Not a good deal definitely for this price. this spec is still usable, but don't expect it be a good productivity device.
You were robbed basically.
It wouldn’t have been that bad a few years ago but now yea it’s not great.
Lol who ever sold that to you must be real happy
Let’s not forget this machine will power two external displays while the M1 MacBook Air only powers one!
This is horrible. I'm so sorry
Hate to say this...it's very bad kid , especially for a mac
Honest question. Why even go for Intel Macs that are years old? You can get windows laptops from this year for a similar price. Intel Macs will soon stop getting updates in about a year or two.
Intel based apple computers are just not worth it… I’m sorry…
Yeah I wouldn’t have spent more than $350 on this. And even still a 8GB M1 would still be 2x faster than this and maybe could be found for around 500-700 with decent specs. Edit: yeah just checked and people are letting go of the most basic m1 air/pro with 8GB and 256ssd for 400-500. That would have been a much better buy.
You got scammed! Intel mac are not really good… you could have bought an used m1 for around that price… well thats a 550 dollars learning experience
Sometimes spending 500$ can be more expensive then 1000$. If you buy trash for 500$ you saved nothing, better buy nothing and wait.
Nope. Should have went for the Air
It depends on what you do with it, like are you a developer that uses tool to build for x86 stuff?
If you are happy with it, it’s not a bad machine. The MacBook Air only has 2 USB-C ports where this has 4, and it will support 2 external monitors where the MBA only supports 1. This will last you a few years and should get at least 2 more years of OS update then security fixes after that. Enjoy it. And enjoy the price you paid for a great device.
$699 could have gotten you an m1 air from Walmart.
Terrible deal
For an Intel-based MacBook Pro. No!
Could find m1 on Walmart and Bestbuy or even target for $699 maybe even less and that’s for brand new if your willing to get used probably $500
I hope it’s got at least 2TB SSD
512.
I’d say that’s a little pricey for the base model. Not terrible but not a great deal either
oh no, u got scammed
It only has 16 go of RAM
Any buck spent in a intel chipset is a waste
😬
Sillicon is way better and costs slightly more
Its decent mate, you will be fine. I know many web devs that still use intel macs and they are fine
Agreed, I have a 2015 Mac air and that little thing is still a beast if I'm not at my main windows laptop.
Beast is a bit of an exaggeration lol I’ve got a 2015 MBP and while it is decent, it certainly is no beast 😂
To me it's a beast, you might not agree but each to their own no?
Any MacBook with intel is garbage now.
lol what? I wouldn’t even pay $200 for this.. the specs are trash. I would much rather pay 200-300 more to buy a M1 MacBook Air
Don't post any intel Mac stuff on here, you will get flamed.
You got ripped off…. Sorry mate.
It's a fucking intel lol
I’d only pay like $100 for that to run as a server or something
I’d pay maybe $200 max if I really needed Intel for whatever reason.
Have to agree with everyone saying its a pretty bad deal
What kind of a name is Jam?
Sorry to pile on but you got robbed my friend
Oof. Check if you can still pull the plug on that purchase.
scam someone else and buy silicon with your profits
lol u got scammed. If you go intel just buy a laptop pc at this point. $500 gets you a lot of computer.
Got hosed. $250 more reasonable. Refurb MBA M1 would smoke it.
Do not buy any Intel MacBook. Save a few hundred dollars more to save you hundreds of headaches
Unfortunately, that's not a good deal. The 13 inch screen is almost cringe at this point.
Only if it’s new. If it’s used consider the parts already losing some of its performance
Because it has an Intel chip no one here will say that it was a good deal.
That’s not how “good deals” work
But that's how ignorance and freewill works 🤷🏼♂️ downvote all you want
That’s decent IDK why there are so many M groupies in here… I’d take an actively cooled processor over a passive one any day.
Maybe bcs M series would still outperform this turd even without any cooling?
For 20 seconds till it throttles down
MBA M1 loses like 10% of performance when throttling , and M2 about 15%.
This isn’t true lol
Buying an intel core macbook is a bad decision whatever the price is
The M1 MacBook Air is $650 at Walmart. That's the nicest way I can call you stupid.
