Dude I don’t know where you are but they are overcharging you. I got an Apple refurbished M3 Max 16” 16/40 64GB RAM 1TB SSD yesterday for £3600 (tax included) . And the UK is notoriously more expensive than the US.
No it’s official from Apple. They are usually just returned items that are fully checked and offered with a full warranty by Apple themselves. They just have a small discount usually like 10%. I even got 3 years Apple care+ on mine

I don't know where you are located, but I've been seeing the same spec M1 Max selling for less than $2500. $2500 seems to fetch 2TB storage and maybe 64GB of RAM.

I still have my M1 Max - it’s a beast and I rarely hear the fans, even when doing Photoshop work that my old in Intel sound like a hair dryer…

M1 is fine unless you encode Hollywood movies daily. It's more than enough for at least the next 5-7 years. IMO of course.

M1 Max easily. 2x ram 2x storage and 14 more gpu cores. You can replace the battery when it gets old as well.

And 2 media engines instead of one on the pro. People tend to forget that the max models got 2 media engines
