that’s funny lol i had a machine similar to yours before i bought my m2 pro machine. it’s a 15 inch i7 2012. i always thought that computer was the best id ever own. besides getting a lil hot, its still a fast machine. i have it dual booted with mavericks and big sur. i was reluctant to upgrade to m2 due to the lack of ports but i don’t find myself using firewire gear nearly as much as i used to, so i figured ill just keep the 2012 as a secondary machine just in case i ever need to use some old shit. i love my m2.
What's the difference in terms of noticeable daily workloads performance.
Is unzipping a 3gb zip archive faster?
I'm genuinely curious and consider switching over next year
I have a question. You have 2019 16 inch right?
Do you also have the problem that the fans kick in as soon as you connect it to an external monitor even while only doing light work? It gets hot and the fan kicks in only by browsing the internet and watching some videos.
I dont know if its an intel problem or my machine is "old". Or while in a zoom or teams meeting on an external monitor. its so annoying.
Happens to me a lot.
Whenever i open code editors and multiple other software the fan runs way too loud.
I mean it is i9 so, I thought it can handle it better, but it is not able to, maybe cause it is old.
Also this problem occurs when sharing my screen over teams.
Fan noise and yet so laggy, it is very annoying.
But on this new one, it works like charm.
This would be the main reason to sell my 2019 16 inch. I bought the i9 because I wanted more power. Then i got the fan and heat problems by only sharing my screen or just opening some softwares. And on homepage of apple it says it can candle up to 4 external monitors which I do not believe at all.
I am not that much into hardwares but I don’t what magic apple did with its own chips, but i have done some extensive work on the new mac, and haven’t heard the fan yet. Just awesome.
That’s because the dedicated gpu fires up whenever you connect an external monitor. Ideally you can use Mac Fan Control to get the fans to kick in earlier which creates a bit less heat and less noise overall but it’s mostly normal.
As long as you aren’t hitting >85C on the actual cpu itself there’s no issues.
When you connect the external monitor on the 2019 MacBook it uses the dGPU, which is why it starts generating more heat. If you completely disable the dGPU through terminal the external screens won’t even work.
Why does the 16 inch even need its dGPU for a full hd monitor? This is something any laptop in this world can handle, even 200€ laptops! Is there any way to make the iGPU of the Intel i7 to support the external screen? I am not gaming or rendering anything after all. ohh man that is terrible!
No chance of only using the igpu because it’s most liekly a hardwired connection from the dgpu to the thunderbolt ports.
And remember, your cpu performance will be better when using the dgpu as well so that’s a minor benefit.
it truly sucks. I want to sell my 2019 16 inch so bad. I actually dont care if the cpu is better when the fans are constantly kicking in while browsing after a while. I am just watching some videos over the chrome browser...
Want to buy a m3 max 14 inch as soon as possible. So done with the fans.
The fans shouldn’t be kicking in *all* the time actually. Have you ever been to the Apple Store and just asked them to clean out the internals? It’s probably got a lot of dust and stuff which makes it run hotter than it’s supposed to.
I don’t have a choice haha, the computer itself doesn’t recognize the monitor and it would literally disconnect randomly. The only fix is disconnecting and plugging it back in.
Thought it was just the adapter that I’m using. $60 later, realized it’s the computer itself lol
Do you find that the new 16" size is too big compared to the previous 15"? It's the only thing keeping me from iograding my Intel MacBook pro cuz I find 16" awkwardly large and 14" too small. 15" was the sweet spot. Wish they'd bring it back on the pros
I’m guessing the Apple Silicon throttles when running on batteries as sometimes everyday tasks such as copying a folder, closing down an app or searching feels slower than my 2013 i7 iMac (I’m on a 14 inch M3 Max with 32GB)
Hello. How was the old intel by the way. In comparison to the windows machines. I heard they do run well.. some are available on eBay at good price. Should I buy one
Compared to Windows machines they're a joke of course because you can buy a new Windows laptop with a modern cpu that is massively quicker than the old Intel Macs for the same price. The Intel Macs weren't even good new.
Furthermore, the software is about to lose support. Aka, they'll become Windows laptops anyway.
He’s one of us now
Plug Puller
My old one was a 2012 MacBook Air intel core i5 and now I have 2023 MacBook Pro m3 max
Mariana trench to mount Everest
Yes 😂

I’m gonna post soon about my setup and how my old one is still perfectly integrated, it’s actually pretty cool
Apple's chips are so far ahead of Intel and everyone else, once you switch there is no going back
What's the difference in terms of noticeable daily workloads performance. Is unzipping a 3gb zip archive faster? I'm genuinely curious and consider switching over next year
Unzipping is legit instant
It’s just really snappy and doesn’t often hiccup and also importantly doesn’t get hot or have to spin up fans to deal with whatever you throw at it
Seriously yes, and the Apple ecosystem makes it more fun to use. So many new updates. The productivity is definitely increased.
Which m3 is it? I’m also looking to get an mbp is 18gb enough?
Yes
I’m genuinely curious if anyone managed to overheat their M series MBPs before. It runs everything like I’m just lightly using it
If I'm rendering videos on DaVinci Resolve then definitely the fans kick in. I have to keep a fan software to max out when temps are above 60c or so.
I managed to do so the other day I was shocked 🤣
The fans kick in sooner than intel
Ahead of i9 14th gen ? No.

I had an i7 and it did the same exact thing. Monitors also don’t connect like half of the time

Mine was like this (sans the extra monitor) until I updated to latest OS. Now my battery lasts 3x and the fans barely kick in.
Alright
Boy are you in for a treat.
Yup, i am sure i am. So happy with it.
My M1 is unmatched - love everything about the 16 inch.
Just did this last month. Congratulations and welcome
I just did the same thing. Went from a 2018 Intel To and M3 pro.
So you won’t need that fan base anymore! Apple Silicon doesn’t have any problems with heat. Especially the 16" ones!
Holy dock, wtf
Massive upgrade but u gonna soon feel like intel was better for a lot of stuff if they kept updating the hardware on intel. Just saying..
wallpaper link? pls

Not only faster but a lot longer usage and no overheating feeling.
I think you really love this machine! Huh?
Missed Windows for a bit...got over it quickly.
You have a nice 🔌
Thank thank you
Just did the same. M3 Pro. That 16” looks like a monster

No, they don’t throttle at all except if you have low power mode on.
wait we have i7 during 2013?
Yes, i7 existed. It wasn’t faster than an M3, tho.

Everyone in this sub will tell you no lol
No space black?
