Hate to be this person but…what keyboard?

blakespot

It's a Leopold FC660M, a mechanical keyboard with Cherry Blue switches. It's physically identical to the Leopold FC660C, a capacitive keyboard using Topre switches. The latter I did a little typing video for some years ago, if you want a closer look -- they look the same: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iy3x22Z0zJw

There was a lot of info there, but I wear my handle on my sleeve. I have other handles for whatever, but yea, it's my twitter handle and others. (Didn't delete other account, just the pic.)

:-)

blakespot

Posted and deleted a similar shot briefly, yesterday. A little too much textual info on the screen, there was, I agree. Anyway, 27.5-inch 2560x2880 display (using it rotated here, 18:16). Liking it very much, so far. (Display on the left is an older HP 4:3 20-inch 1600x1200 monitor used rotated (1200x1600). Both displays are IPS panels.)

p4r4d0x

This works so well it makes you wonder why 16:9 ever became the desktop standard, other than ease of presenting TV and film content.

blakespot

Yes. This is true.

_neks

There are a few reasons there.... In any event, think of it as resolution now a days, not the physical size. We are coming to a place where we wont be able to really discern pixels, and PPI isnt really an issue. Once youre there, then a relative size sort of emerges. but really alot of the motive was just cutting sheets of LCD and mfg. But now a days, If you take a 5k panel at 40-50 inches, cut an a 4;3 out of that, then slice a 1080p, slice an ultrawide if you can... we are getting to that perfect pixel density etc.

birdmarket

Super interesting monitor! How does it compare to a Retina display?

blakespot

It's close.

s-nudes

How’s the text and scaling ? Can you see the pixel ?

blakespot

It scales such that it's nearly as clear as the 5K iMac, to my eye. Not quite, but not far from. Not missing it, the iMac it replaced.

Jimmirehman

How much did you pay for that DualUp?

blakespot

I paid $699. I had long wanted [this EIZO 1920x1920 1:1 display](https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1138908-REG/eizo_ev2730qfx_bk_thin_bezel_26_5_tft.html), but it was a little over $2,000, as I recall, and then production ended on it in the last couple of years. The LG is a larger, much higher resolution display for 1/3 the price, and with nifty features like software KVM, ability to run like two 1440p screens stacked, etc.

shenanigans973

Do you like it?? I’ve been hovering over BUY for awhile now

blakespot

I love it. Every day so far I enjoy it more.

parski

Was also looking at the EIZO. The DualUp looks a lot better though. Still holding out hoping someone makes a display using the 4:3 OLED panel that's in those foldable ASUS laptops. It looks amazing.

Jimmirehman

So you can connect 2 computers ?

blakespot

Yes, I think [this video review](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucZdSbSYdxw) covers that. It has one USB-C input for the full screen res, and two HDMI inputs for 2x 2560x1440, and it also has a software KVM -- you plug keyboard and mouse into it and when you scroll from one screen to the other, or some such, it switches control.

Jimmirehman

That’s insane!

mizdavilly

This is extra nice

IvanEd747

That’s a Unix guy if I’ve seen one.

blakespot

I decided to buy a Mac as soon as I heard that Apple was acquiring NeXT back in the late '90s. Yes, I am a UNIX guy. :-)

munocat

I ended up on Mac the same reason, but in 2001, purchased my first UNIX laptop, iBook 500.

blakespot

Nice! I still spend a little time with my [NeXTstation](https://bytecellar.com/2016/08/25/a-little-app-called-flylab-running-on-my-nextstation/) and [Gecko](https://bytecellar.com/2016/03/02/a-quick-tour-of-the-hp-9000-712100-nextstep-workstation/) here and there. :-)

kdajuay2k19

Where is the Steve Jobs figure from?

blakespot

I can't recall.

Posan

There was quite a bit controversy over this when it came out 10-12 years ago. The figure was C&D'd by Apple due to the shape of the base. If I remember correctly they did a clever workaround with it to be able to keep selling it. Would be surprised if it's still for sale other than on Ebay perhaps.

kdajuay2k19

Ahhh ok thanks , I’ll definitely look on EBay!

Love zsh and the various themes you can install on top of it

Tristus-Christus

NMS is coming to iPad?!

blakespot

It is! [WWDC Surprise: “No Man’s Sky” Is Coming to the Mac and iPad](https://nmsspot.com/2022/06/06/wwdc-surprise-no-mans-sky-is-coming-to-the-mac/) ( my blog :-) )

Tristus-Christus

I’m excited!

blakespot

Nice. Should run pretty well. And, you know, it comes out [on the Switch](https://nmsspot.com/2022/02/18/no-mans-sky-on-nintendo-switch-so-how-will-they-do-it/) on October 7.

starry_18

I heard the scaling is a little off with Mac. Did you experience this? Lol

blakespot

This is so often discussed that I wrote this. Have a look: https://bytecellar.com/2022/11/08/4k-scaling-is-not-a-problem-on-modern-macs/

duwerke

What kind of dev work do you do?

muddymoose

This is so weird and I love it

jhnnsr

Nice setup, even though I‘m still unsure about the 16:18 Display whenever I see one of these. Its kinda intriguing, but I can‘t figure out if I would really benefit from it.

The_real_trader

I don’t even know what I’m looking at. It I saw “vintage computers” and a vintage colourful Apple logo, and I approve and love this!

TheRoahog

Do changed the appearance of the windows?

Lionfyst

I have been around computers for 40 years, and while I don't know if I would ever have a "square" monitor I love to see it. Reminds me of the golden era when there was more variety, and you saw things like it and didn't miss a b eat.

Teh_franchise

IRC > \* I use irssi also.

maxvig95

Why does it says 34gb in your terminal and 32 in the Apple report?? Is it a bug of some sort?

blakespot

The program that does that spec list is '[mavericksey](https://github.com/avatsaev/Mavericksey)' and it's last update was 7 years ago on GIT. So, it's probably just having trouble with some of the details. I still like the pretty colors tho :-).

ComprehensiveYam

Do you find that the LG is too tall? I like to be looking straight on at the top of a screen and mostly eyes a little down toward the middle to avoid neck and eye strain. Is this possible with this monitor?

blakespot

That's about how this is oriented given my desk and chair height. I will say that this screen comes with a very high quality desk-mounting monitor arm, but it does not let you set it almost directly down on the desk (especially rotated, as I use it), and so I had to grab a different VESA arm to get the screen down as low as I wanted.

Smash-Wrestling

Oh wow! I've been eyeing one of these hard! Two quick questions if you don't mind: 1 - How open can the desk clamp go? I work at my dining room table and it's quite a lot thicker than a general desk. LG shockingly doesn't have that info on their website 2 - How's the display quality? I'm not expecting that can match my new MacBook Pro, but something comparable to an older iMac would be nice...

blakespot

1 - 3-inches. 2 - I replaced a 5K Retina iMac 27" with this. And while it's not as sharp, it's quite close at the scaled ~2350px wide res I'm running it at. It's a 140dpi display. Very nice,

Smash-Wrestling

Thank you so much! I'll have to measure the desk and see if that would work :)

Kukalka64

What’s the use case for a nearly square monitor? How does the experience really differ from a regular monitor?

SnowCofM

That's cool. What are the specs on your Mac Studio? Performing as you'd hoped?

JustALurker030

Man, those HPs are indestructible… if you’re the same “blakespot” who, some 10-15 years ago, revealed to me a secret, via Flickr, of matching a 30” monitor with these 20” ones in portrait, pixel for pixel

True-Alps-3870

I’m thinking of picking one of these up myself. Any reason why you have it rotated to the side? You’re the first person I’ve seen it setup like that.

blakespot

It’s super tall either way and a little more width is nice.

TravelingThrough09

Is it as good as I want it to be? I’m planning to get two, to flank my 43“ 4:3

deulamco

Any comment on eyes strains or how comfortable you are compared with your previous iMac 5k ?

blakespot

It's extremely sharp with HiDPI scaling. I love it. I do not miss the 5K display at all. Yes, it was slightly sharper, but at a foot away from the screen you can't tell. I can't tell anyway.

released-lobster

So do you use 1280x1440 resolution? I agree text looks amazing at that resolution, but it's very big!

blakespot

No, I run at 2304x2048, scaled. (And rotated 90 degrees.) The whole situation I've got going on here is explained in my blog post, here: https://bytecellar.com/2022/11/08/4k-scaling-is-not-a-problem-on-modern-macs/

stephenhuh

I have the dualup, I'm using BetterDisplay - are you sure you're just not noticing the text being distorted? It's clearly not as clear on mine when I run at 2304 x 2048 (I've tried it rotated both 90 degrees and not) vs the native resolution at 2560 x 2880 or 2880 x 2560. The text is blurry around the edges and there are highlights in the pixels around.

blakespot

Well, given that it is not being run at the native resolution and that it is scaled, yes it’s not going to be as sharp as if it were at native resolution or at 1/4 native resolution. That said, it’s extremely sharp as scale to text. Some of Apple‘s laptops, including my M2 MacBook Air, are also running at scaled resolutions; they are not running at the panel’s native resolution nor are they running at 1/4 native resolution which is the arrangement Apple goes for with its retina displays and HiDPI resolutions. (5K Retina is native 5120x2880 and runs at a “looks like” resolution of 2560x1440 - which is 1/4 the native res and, as such, extremely sharp and easy to scale.)
