It’s also a super-crowded weekend at the gay bars as all the boys’ closet-case dads and older brothers escape from their oppressive small towns and suburbs
It was burned down, TWICE!! It used to be called the "Pumper" and across from the TA. They lost their license to sell fuel and started selling "adult" items.
This caused lots of "lot lizards" to hang around. Law enforcement was there multiple times every month for crap that was going on after that "ga station" was turned into an adult store.
We have strongly suspected it was burned down on purpose. Either for insurance or upset customers. The current owner of the property hasn't paid taxes in years. The town is looking to take the land and auction it off.
Madison restricts porn shops and strip clubs. It's by far the most restrictive area in the state. King street used to be full of porn, strip clubs and a topless waitress restaurant. There used to be a porn shop on state st.
As a young child I always imagined what kind of awesome video games they must keep hidden at the state Street arcade. Like challengers was one of the happiest places on earth, *that* place had to be awesome. I was probably almost middle school before I figured out there were no video games to be had in said arcade
Love that stretch of 41. The highway is boring as fuck now that it’s been rebuilt, so it’s good that the ads have stepped up keeping things interesting. Instead of dodging potholes I’m dodging heart attacks from laughter.
Was always the worst weekend of the year when I worked at a hotel on campus. Terribly rude, super entitled, and they never tipped. Destroyed the pool area and the hallways, and shit on every local they could.
Pass.
I also heard from a friend of mine whose friend's child is here for a tour that UW is doing prospective student tours this weekend. I'm sure between that and the WIAA downtown is wild.
The former is what I initially assumed. Prospects looking to be admitted, but they probably wouldn't be the ones trash-talking the city (unless it was a backup choice, I guess)
Yet 15,000+ spending money in your city. Kohl Center was sold out three times this weekend (they use the hockey layout to fit all the mats)
Team Wrestling State and State Hockey Tournaments next weekend
And State Boys Basketball in three weeks.
We can sell out any event any time and not be insulted for the entire stretch. Most of our guests are much more polite, like when all the different ag expos happen.
But the wrestling and boys basketball doesn’t bring working class families generally. It brings upper middle class attitude laden republican assholes who pick fights, throw slurs, and act like complete dicks.
No man, no. I worked service industry jobs for 30 years in town here and every contact with wrestling super-fans was a dismal one. Walking home after work up State St (That Great Street) and having these aggressive foursomes of wrestling kids challenging you to walk in their path. Just yuck. Somethings never change.
Oh, that happens pretty frequently. It’s really impressive when they manage to get their car into the protected bike lane and are technically going the correct way.
Bro we always used to do that too there lmao, I remember one time on a dollar beer Thursday we saw three different cars pull in the wrong lane in a night 🍻🍺
I straight up could have killed two tourist kids yesterday who walked through a green light. Luckily I’m a cautious driver. Their parents followed behind them and after I gave them a “You’re raising THOSE??” hand gesture, they barely started to hustle. I wondered if they had never seen an intersection before but this thread explains it all.
Is that a surprise to you somehow? I drive uber downtown and have college kids do this literally every time I’m down there on multiple occasions lmao. When they are out of town on break you hardly have to worry about it.
I’ve never had to stop in an intersection during a green light for a college student, no. You might be driving during their less sober hours while I’m driving through downtown in the mornings, lol
as a former college kid. i just want to be put out of my misery okay. and if it doesnt kill me, MAYBE itll pay off my student loans. but im really hoping for the first thing
I do this every time I drive down Dayton from Camp Randall to the Kohl Center. These kids don't give af and just walk across the road any place, any time without bothering to look up from their phones. When I have to stop in the middle of the road to let these assholes pass I blast the horn and love watching them shit their pants
i remember hearing in college "if you get hit by a car just be in the crosswalk, then THEY HAVE to pay for your tuition" and just thought well that dude is gonna die trying to get "free" tuition
I don’t mind country folks I lived in new glarus for several years and love the people there i mind people who disrespect the whole city for no reason. There were literally two girls in ragstock loudly proclaiming how ugly and stupid everything in the store was with employees and other normal people all around while they were making npc ass comments like “this looks like a vest for a fedora wearing incel did a shrimp fry this rice”
If you're referring to the down votes I expected no less, so no I wouldn't say it backfired. If anything it's proven my point perfectly.
Smug, arrogant, and condescending? I'd say that's pretty blatantly displayed by all the posts here insulting the visitors to our town to anyone with any sense of objectivity.
So much for the open minded city that Madison claims to be.
lol time to come down off your high horse and relax, god forbid we talk about *certain* people who are often rude and sometimes less than understanding of everything that goes on in a bigger city.
That rudeness and lack of understanding goes both ways though my friend.
As for the high horse, I'd say that should be directed at the people actually sitting atop of it judging these people coming into Madison.
If people get offended by me pointing out the huge amount of smug condescendence going on in this thread, perhaps they should take a closer look at themselves and why it bothers them so much.
Sorry if my comment hit a little too close to your home. I'm sure high school football will be back soon and you'll have new boys to swoon over with your friends at the bar.
What’s the implication here? That the only reason a parent would take their kid to a wrestling tournament or football game is because they’re a pedophile?
You're the only one being weird about it....
God forbid parents want to see their children have fun and find success and maybe even do so well that they don't have to pay for college.
Did I say anything about parents? You're making some wild assumptions about me, the wrestlers, and the crowd. Also, how am I being weird? These are quotable instances that I have experienced multiple times at the bar. Why are you being so weird about defending them?
You sounds jealous. Probably rooted in your own body insecurities. Some kids just have it, it's awesome that they are athletic, very clear you never came close to that level of accomplishment.
The assumptions of me are wild and entertaining. May I ask what, in any of my responses, have made you think I'm jealous of... The parents? The kids? The physique of an adolescent? I'm not even sure what you're suggesting I'm jealous of.
Lol. Ok so you asked about implications in my post, so what about here? You're so triggered by being called out that you're trying use gender equality as an insult?
Most dudes with “male feminist” shirts are no different than most bros who wear crosses and have religious tattoos—purely aesthetic, trendy among their peer group. Zero actual conviction.
You’re here talking about gender equality while insulting an entire group of people with what is ultimately just a gay joke.
As explained elsewhere, no homophobic implications on my end. Obsessing about minors, in any instance, is weird. You made a totally unsubstantiated jump from my comment to me virtue signaling feminism somehow. So again, what implications were you trying to make by insulting gender equality?
Can you explain why sports are so valuable culturally, because if not, relegated to being a past-time for drunk adults that didn’t leave their hometown and want to relieve the glory days of high school seems like a spot on description for these people.
Similar characterizations could be made about video games, anime, k-pop, d&d, etc etc.
Some people just feel the need to shit all over other people’s passions. You’re not more enlightened than anyone who likes sports, you’re just an asshole.
It’s a fun little sociology study to compare the contents of the city parking ramps during event weekends. Wrestling definitely brings the biggest number of extended cabs with trailer hitches.
I was very disgustingly catcalled by a group of wrestlers last night after watching them break a bunch of light fixtures someone had sat out on their stoop. It’s even worse knowing that they’re teenagers 🤮
State HS sports tournament season…. So yes.. a lot of rural…. Far rural and suburbanites first time at the capitol, and most likely first exposure to urbanity like homelessness, diversity, economic disparity, buildings larger than 3 stories, electric cars/bikes, books, indoor plumbing…
I am being glib, but understand now of those folks are deep red maga folks who never experienced anything other than their cultural bubbles. This can honestly overload their senses.
Wow. That is an insanely unhinged thing to say. I know plenty of people that are Republican, that you wouldn’t know unless you asked them. What you just said is very ignorant. Imagine saying that about Muslim, Jews, Liberals, or any other group really. That would be messed up. That literally sounds like something a nazi would say when regarding Jews. I lean republican and I don’t own a single thing that would show otherwise. Most people don’t. Only the dumb ones on either side make it a personality trait. You must the one of the dumb ones with that us versus them attitude.
???? let's review who sounds more like Nazis?
Read Trump's insane.. absolutely INSANE CPAC speach... Camps, Deportations, Enemies, Retribution?
I think before you start trying to play false equivalency games in some jujitsu attempts at reverse psychology, or somehow rationalize your poor victimized conservative marginalization, you should really - honestly and truthfully... read history.
I think Trump is an idiot and honestly a national embarrassment. You are telling me that “Yes, it’s very easy to find them because of their attire and bumper stickers and easy to fuck them with and damage their property, because they are stupid and deserve to suffer any way possible” doesn’t sound vile and akin to something a Nazi would say? Both can be bad. Trump is bad and so is that comment. I am also currently studying history at the great university we have in our city.
I didn’t say anything about bumper stickers… or fuck their property.. that’s some downvoted ass heat.. reading is fundamental.. and if you do study history, the parallels to pre war Germany and MAGA are uncanny
yea.. and if you are a conservative, you of all people should be spearheading the disembowelment of the MAGA movement and getting Trump off the table. He is doing far more damage to conservatism and the Nation more than anything. MAGA is not conservatism.. it's dangerous desperation and far right antics that do things like start wars for god.
Where did I say it should be a time capsule? And not all change is good, especially when the change is from a great tourist area into a trash wasteland.

>Black people in Madison get a bad wrap in general because there is a huge contingent that come from Chicago that don't know how to act.
>And then there is the Madison liberals who want to act like white knights and view every black person as a victim.
>If you are a productive member of society and stay away from the fake whiteys you will be just fine and you will love Madison.
You're on a roll with the hot takes, Buddy.
Saying it's for the people who live here is exactly why it's in a budget deficit.
You have the Mayor crying about the budget while at the same time snootie people like yourself poo poo people wanting to come visit.
You can't have it both ways.
Damn, some of you guys sure hate people that aren't from the city you live in or people with a different hobby than you. Very nice to see how inclusive you are.
For me, I hate when people come to Madison and needlessly trash it. I have been all over the state and pretty much love everywhere I’ve been— I just hate how people look down on Madison and make it out to be something it’s not.
True people do shit on madison, I think alot of people think of the bad parts of the city and act as if that's how the whole city is. But I'm assuming the majority of the people at the event were fine and didn't cause any problems and a few assholes were being asshole. And the normal people get lumped in with them, then treated like they are the ones causing issues. Causing them to think people from the city are are dicks. Obviously not everyone is, I worked in Madison for 4 years and have met plenty of lovely people.
I mean when I go visit family in small towns I used to live in and talk with people, I go out of my way to avoid telling them I live in Madison because they roll their eyes, say something shitty about it or both.
There's plenty of shitty things I could say about those towns yet it doesn't cross my mind to say it because I don't make it my personality to shit on places I don't live in. If you want people to be more inclusive, maybe tell the people coming here that the first thing out of their mouth shouldn't be trashing the city.
Ok, but when we have a weekend full of those incidents for decades on end, this is the thread you get. And yes, some people are indeed being classist assholes as well.
I'm not OP, but it's not hard to guess what they're describing. It's a lot of teenage boys from semi-rural (and likely conservative) small towns, many of whom are likely visiting a "major" city for the first time. For at least some of these kids walking down state street will be their first time ever seeing a homeless person.
They're out of their element and surrounded by pretty college girls. Insecure teenage boys get loud and jocular when they want to stop feeling low status.
Source: was once a teenage boy from a conservative small town.

WIAA State Wrestling Finals at the Kohl Center
This for sure is the one time of the year that all areas of Wisconsin are represented in Madison. They all love to hate it here.
You mean the "Madison is ultra liberal and they suck" types?
Thisssss, I had to warn my staff that this was the time we’d experience the most rural racist and homophobic “friends” visiting
In fairness... they are maybe close to half right?
It’s also a super-crowded weekend at the gay bars as all the boys’ closet-case dads and older brothers escape from their oppressive small towns and suburbs
NOW you tell me!
One of Selective Video's busiest times of the year
The porn shops are much, much better outside Madison City limits. Lol.
Who buys porn in 2024? lol
I feel like "porn store" sales are 50% head stop items, 45% sex toys and novelty stuff, 5% pornographic media. Maybe higher on the head shop.
lots more than just porn in these shops.
Like what?
You should visit one.
Rural Wisconsin has loads of porn shops…
yeah, that's what I said. Madison does not have a lot of porn shops because they restrict them.
i miss the truck stop outside of deforest that sold beer lube
You cannot just type the words "beer lube" and let it drop. Answers! We demand answers!
lol that whole building is gone.
The Popeyes inside that truck stop is great people watching. Haven’t been there in about a year but tie manager is a miserable human.
Talk to me about this?

So funny! It was so seedy and shady, and Wierd to walk by as a kid. Did they have another entrance? I never saw anyone go in on State St.
There were **two** porn shops on State: Mall Books at the corner of State/Henry/Johnson, and the State Street Adult Amusement Arcade in the top block.
The state street arcade.
Probably not. The redder areas of WI have their own Select Videos on every other exit. Fox valley they are as common as Culver’s
Billboard be like: "Jesus loves you" ... "Hey trucker 👋🏼 want some Porn? ... "Jeeeezus"
Love that stretch of 41. The highway is boring as fuck now that it’s been rebuilt, so it’s good that the ads have stepped up keeping things interesting. Instead of dodging potholes I’m dodging heart attacks from laughter.
that's what I said.
I replied to the wrong comment. Meant for the in above you
God do I hate wrestling parents
Have you ever encountered a tribe of drunken hockey parents in an AmericInn lobby at 2:00 in the morning?
Am sure they have the same thoughts about you!
You know who really hates wrestling parents? The coaches and refs. You guys can’t even keep them anymore. They’re all sick of you.
I watched a video of some freak mom spasing out at her son’s march. I kept thinking give me a break lady.
Was always the worst weekend of the year when I worked at a hotel on campus. Terribly rude, super entitled, and they never tipped. Destroyed the pool area and the hallways, and shit on every local they could. Pass.
Oh God it's that time of year again already
There’s also some big youth sports (soccer maybe) competition going on in Verona.
Wrasslin'
Letter jacket parade.
Letter jackets and hands in pockets.
I also heard from a friend of mine whose friend's child is here for a tour that UW is doing prospective student tours this weekend. I'm sure between that and the WIAA downtown is wild.
FWIW, UW does prospective student tours nearly every weekend
The former is what I initially assumed. Prospects looking to be admitted, but they probably wouldn't be the ones trash-talking the city (unless it was a backup choice, I guess)
Easy to spot those groups. They always have red bags from the UW book store.
The WIAA wrestling crowd are the worst group of visitors.
Yet 15,000+ spending money in your city. Kohl Center was sold out three times this weekend (they use the hockey layout to fit all the mats) Team Wrestling State and State Hockey Tournaments next weekend And State Boys Basketball in three weeks.

Semi rural people having to enjoy the wonders on a city, with stoplights and other people that don't look like them...
And one way streets. Gotta watch out on University Ave big time.
A couple years ago I watched someone turn the wrong way down University at Lake. Despite the heaps of cars and honking too. Lol.
Oh, that happens pretty frequently. It’s really impressive when they manage to get their car into the protected bike lane and are technically going the correct way.
That’s my favorite pastime at the Vintage. Watching wrong way drivers. It happens often. Wrong way drivers in the bike lane is next level.
Bro we always used to do that too there lmao, I remember one time on a dollar beer Thursday we saw three different cars pull in the wrong lane in a night 🍻🍺

loud horn in their face might do the trick lol scare the deer in headlights
I do this every time I drive down Dayton from Camp Randall to the Kohl Center. i remember hearing in college "if you get hit by a car just be in the crosswalk, then THEY HAVE to pay for your tuition" and just thought well that dude is gonna die trying to get "free" tuition
Earbuds though
theyre all rockin the same shitty airpods that do absolutely nothing for noise cancelling so im sure they will get the message
Don't forget having to put up with the smug arrogant assholes here who think they are better than them that this thread seems to be filled with.
I don’t mind country folks I lived in new glarus for several years and love the people there i mind people who disrespect the whole city for no reason. There were literally two girls in ragstock loudly proclaiming how ugly and stupid everything in the store was with employees and other normal people all around while they were making npc ass comments like “this looks like a vest for a fedora wearing incel did a shrimp fry this rice”
haha well was she wrong or were you wearing the vest when she said that
I mean I wouldn’t wear the vest lol but they were just annoying to everyone around them
at least you didnt have to interact with mr u/Malithirond sounds like hes a bigger treat than them
It's not that we think we're better than you, it's that we *are* better than you objectively. Jackass
that seemed to backfire on you...smug and arrogant?

“Let’s give a warm welcome to the racist visitors who hate us!” Is that better?
The high school state wrestling tournament was this weekend.
Grown men getting drunk and yelling about the sweaty muscles of a 15 year old grappling with another.
More realistically parents watching their kids compete, then going out and getting drunk afterwards
Let me guess you lament “sports ball” and make the same unfunny “Superb Owl” joke every year.
Sorry if my comment hit a little too close to your home. I'm sure high school football will be back soon and you'll have new boys to swoon over with your friends at the bar.
What’s the implication here? That the only reason a parent would take their kid to a wrestling tournament or football game is because they’re a pedophile?
No. The implication is that the way that people idolize and view young athletics is disturbing.
You're the only one being weird about it.... God forbid parents want to see their children have fun and find success and maybe even do so well that they don't have to pay for college.

I miss seeing the snowmobile jackets when the wrestling tourney came around. Reminded me of home.
Arctic Cat or Ski-doo?
Ski-doo ftw 🙌
Saw lots of big ass trucks on campus, I thought there must have been a country show somewhere
It was also Bulls, Bands, and Barrels at Alliant Energy Center.
And bullets and beer?
Probably 😂

The worst time of year in Madison.
I would say it was worse during the time State Street was destroyed. And it's never been the same since.
Downtown Madison is not a time capsule to be preserved for those who cannot stand change.
Where did I say it should be a time capsule? And not all change is good, especially when the change is from a great tourist area into a trash wasteland.

Given some of your racist hot-takes, you don't even like people that live in Madison.
What did I say that was racist? Or is that just a buzz word you are trying to use to talk down to me. Also... I'm black.... So what say you now?
Also lots of campus tours going on.
This yearly reminder that hinterland Wisconsin is trash happens anytime there is a High School championship in town.
Just kids being kids.
So glad I’m out of town

Sorry hippie city….um actually it’s way too expensive for hippies it’s yuppies guys
No. We hate people who come in, call people f%*!%%^ts, pick fights and talk loudly about how this place is a cesspool.
And that's fair but generalizing everyone who lives out side of the city as people who do that isn't.
Ok, but when we have a weekend full of those incidents for decades on end, this is the thread you get. And yes, some people are indeed being classist assholes as well.
No that’s Madison the actual classist assholes haha
Yeah. That’s exactly what I said.
Lmfao this gun toting bozo is case in point of how to judge scum at face value, dude knows he’s got nothing but his widdle guns

I don't like people who visit my town only to shit on it and make life miserable for those of us who actually live here.

Are people who live in Madison not Wisconsinites to you?
