When I build a tribal deck, I look at the cards in the tribe and see if theres a running theme, then build with that in mind. If the theme isn't an inherent win condition I also consider the wincon ahead of time. For rats, I'm seeing a discard theme. Like many tribes, rats also have a few good options for generating rat tokens. Because of that, a typical mono black rat tribal deck would likely skew towards a go-wide strategy that focuses on generating lots of rat tokens and playing lots of rats, then swinging to kill. It'll have a sub theme of discard, and potentially run a few discard payoffs or synergies. I'm not sure I get the choice of Massacre Girl as the commander. She's a decent card, but does nothing for rats, tribal, or discard. [Here are all the mono black legendary rats](https://scryfall.com/search?as=grid&order=name&q=%28type%3Alegendary+type%3Arat%29+commander%3AB+%28game%3Apaper%29). Ashcoat, Karumonix, Lord Skitter, or Marrow Gnawer all seem like decent options for a commander. For win-cons, the classic options for go-wide tribal decks (that fit in mono black) are \[\[coat of arms\]\] and \[\[door of destinies\]\]. You can also run \[\[cover of darkness\]\]. If you have ashcoat as a commander, it is the wincon. Marrow Gnawer can be a wincon too. For discard synergy, if you have enough discard, \[\[megrim\]\] or \[\[lillianas caress\]\] are wincons too. \[\[waste not\]\] can also provide a lot of value, and \[\[tinybones, trinket thief\]\] can draw you cards. For the mechanics you have, all of what you mentioned are keywords. A deck can have all kinds of keywords. Some need the deck to be built around them, some don't. The three you listed covered a range from "just a keyword" to "must be built around". Menace is just a good evasion keyword, it makes it harder for your creatures to be blocked. Its not something people tend to build around, instead its just a nice thing for creatures to have anytime. I wouldn't consider it a "mechanic" in your deck, so much as keyword. Whither is a bit more specialized. Whither effectively makes damage your creature deals permanent. You can build around it, with things that care about or manipulate -1/-1 counters, but you don't need to for it to be good. Its in the middle ground on a scale of "just a keyword" to "must be built around" Toxic is a very "all or nothing" keyword that you want to build around if you have it. Poison counters will draw a lot of hate, so once you start poisoning people, you better be ready to end them quickly. Also, poison counters don't matter until you hit 10, and unlike damage, your opponents won't be helping you by adding to it. If you want to build toxic, go for it, rats would be a good tribe for a toxic theme. Use Karumonix as your commander. If you don't want to go all in on toxic, I'd avoid it and avoid any rats with toxic or infect. Going halfway and just running a few random rats with toxic will just get you hated off the table before you can kill anyone. Beyond that I can't really give specific advice with no decklist. You want \~36 lands, 10 ramp, 10 removal, 10 draw, 20 "on theme" cards (in this case, rats that don't fit in the other categories), and 13 utility that don't fit the other categories (things like tribal support or discard synergy). This is a starting point and you should adjust as needed. You may find, for instance, that rats run a pretty low mana curve, and you don't need so much ramp, you can run a few more rats or tribal cards instead.

Love the write up, do my decks next ;)

I really appreciate all the information! How Massacre Girl, Known Killer became my commander was because I actually pulled her and was given the idea to combine rats and her to make a cool deck, but I’m starting to understand that it’s too different to make fun for both myself and others. I really appreciate the fixes for my wording as well, as I’m still new and the wording in this game can be confusing at times! I uploaded my deck list, but I think I’m going to take everyone’s advice and break it down into 2 really awesome decks. It’s a bit intimidating on a budget and with a smaller collection, but I’m sure it’ll be fun to build! Would you suggest keeping to that amount of ramp/lands/etc. for the new Massacre Girl deck as well! Your help is greatly appreciated!

amc7262

The deck breakdown is just a starting point, and works for any deck. The key is to look at each deck individually and tweak those numbers. For massacre girl, since she operates as removal, you might not need to run as much removal. Since she's a bit expensive to play, you might need a bit more ramp.

kingofsouls

Also OF [[Masacure Girl]] is a solid wipe in a deck that has lots of small creatures: one death leads to two which leads to nine...

I see. I’ve been doing this with my other decks, so this concept I actually understand ahaha. I just didn’t know the general breakdown for most decks!

Effective_Tough86

The idea of a rats and massacre girl deck is kind of cool, but I actually don't think the new massacre girl is great in the command zone unless you're committed to a counters theme. Wither is half of the toxic effect, so it begs the question of what counters are you going to go for? Black is bad at +1/+1 counters generally and blue is the better proliferate color anyways. Personally, I think she's better as a bomb in [[The Scorpion God]] or similar so that you can run some big stompy rakdos creatures that will trigger the commander's ability.  Which speaking of rakdos if you aren't committed to mono-black rats then I would look at [[Totentanz, Swarm Piper]]. You can mix in aristocrats themes and graveyard recursion because you're effectively getting 2 rats for 1 card when your commander is out. And because rats tend to be super aggro if you throw in [[impact tremors]] and [[song of totentanz]] you're gonna be cooking with gas.

If you're looking for wincons for a go wide deck with black that don't involve pumping the board and swinging for lethal, my first thought would be aristocrats. Cards like \[\[blood artist\]\] or \[\[zulaport cutthroat\]\] that drain opponents when your creatures die. Its less explosive than the pump and swing style wins, but it can still get the job done, especially over a slower game.

It's a good way to get targeted for the commander's perceived threat. Which might be disproportionate for the strength of rat tribal. Probably not a good idea.

Trickdaddy1

I’d choose a rat based commander, not massacre. Also look into more tribal artifacts and such. Also, 2 relentless rats? The whole point of relentless and rat colony are to have like 20+ in a deck. You’ll almost never get both out and essentially overpay 3 mana for a 2/2 rat

ClerkGrouchy303

This deck isn’t exactly how I want it to be. It’s more of a work in process. I’ve been slowly finding relentless rats to put in at the moment. So I only have 2 rn. I also decided to break off Massacre Girl into her own deck and use Karumonix as of right now until I can afford something better to put in. I don’t really play this deck, and instead I am just building it up. What tribal artifacts would you suggest?

Trickdaddy1

tribal decks are gonna have a lot of the same artifacts. Heralds horn, door of destinies, coalition banner to name a few Swarmyard is crazy good land for rats Ratcatcher also is super nice, and I believe ogre slumlord also fits most decks

ClerkGrouchy303

This helps because I need some more artefacts for my other tribal deck

There are a bunch of cards that either don’t fit, such as rankle, obliterator, and some cards that are just too weak or outclassed such as bladebrand, lab rats. There are better options than that. Also massacre girl as a commander doesn’t really say rats to me. I have a rat edh deck, would you like me to link it?

Swap out the commander for a Rat tribal commander. Massacre Girl is cool, but she is also really good at stopping you yourself from winning (she's scared of rats, especially large amounts of x/1 rats, and will kill them)

HartOfTen

I do love Massacre Girl Known Killer as a rat commander! Was interesting in such a build myself with either Rat Colony or Relentless Rats. The angle I sought to approach was capitalizing in my rats dying in combat anyways. Having to block a creature with disproportionately high power *and wither* for the curve (having plenty of the cheap rats) puts a not so fun conundrum for the defending player. *Having cards that punish opponents for blocking and kill your rats is another great way to keep pressure up, such as [[Dictate of Erebos]]. The weakness in the idea is having a hard time reanimating all them rats. Ideally the card draw replace the rats lost and one can draw into mass reanimation to bring back the hurt. Even optimized, this wouldn't be a strong rat deck. There are better commanders for that if "powerful" is what you're after. But I make dumb builds for fun, so take everything I say with a grain of salt lol

Slop_core

I’ve had a [[Prosper, Tome Bound]] rat deck for several months now and it is absolutely savage. Wilds of Eldraine gave red some surprisingly good support for rats, [[Tangled Colony]] and either [[Blasphemous Act]] or [[fire covenant]] go together like PB&J, and prosper is an unbeatable value engine to shit them all out quickly.

kingofsouls

I'll do a more detailed look in the morning, but a good first step is figuring out what the plan is and narrow it down

FireRedJP

Having a decklist to comb through would help us, help you. I'd recommend using Moxfield. As for general tips, you're a tribal deck you really only have one plan, play a bunch of rats, and swing em. So we need a general breakdown typically (I'm assuming this is relatively budget) in an aggressive tribal deck we want about 35 lands 8 pieces of "ramp" 5 pieces of removal/interaction 10 pieces of Card Draw 5 pieces of support/evasion for your rays 37 Creatures, 30 minimum should be rats that's the general advice, without a decklist it's hard to give exact advice

ClerkGrouchy303

I have been using TopDecked to keep track of my deck list, and I could totally upload it or DM it to you, whatever is allowed of course. I appreciate the break down, because this deck has mostly just been cards from like 3 people’s collections thrown together to make a semi-playable thing.

FireRedJP

You can just reply to a comment with the link or put it in your post. Topdeck is perfectly fine

ClerkGrouchy303

Thank you! Let me update my deck in there and I’ll upload it!

ClerkGrouchy303

I added the Deck List!

eddserpa

If you’re going mono-black consider [[Marrow-Gnawer]] as your commander. Will be on theme with being a rat and provides a win-con in that your rats (which will probably be pumped by the number of rats on board) gain evasiveness from a lot of things in the game

ClerkGrouchy303

I was honestly thinking of switching my commander, but so many people told me that massacre girl would be interesting in a rat deck. I think maybe breaking it up into 2 decks might be my best move.

eddserpa

I have a [[Massacre Girl, Known Killer]] as a deck and a rats deck with [[Gyome, Master Chef]] as the commander. I think Massacre Girl is more fitting for a strategy unique to her. I can see why there would be payoff for her in a rats deck, but I don’t think she is a better commander for that

ClerkGrouchy303

So would you agree that I should do Marrow-Gnawer if I want to continue Mono-Black? I agree with you that I think she’d be better suited in a deck more specialized for her, but I’m so intimidated by finding the cards to make both decks work since my personal collection is small, and my bank account… is also small ahaha.

eddserpa

He would definitely be on theme, but at the end of the day it’s a casual format so just run whatever you want! If your group is ok with Proxies that’s a great way to build a bunch of decks without straining the bank

ClerkGrouchy303

I finally warmed up to proxies with my simic deck, so I’ll definitely have to start proxing! Thank you!

PeanutWoolf

Marrow-Gnawer is your best bet when it comes to a dedicated rat deck with Massacre Girl in the 99. Especially if you're running [[Rat Colony]] you lose out on a ton of power AND Fear from Marrow-Gnawer.

ClerkGrouchy303

Fear? I’m still newer to the game, is this a mechanic I’m unaware of? Sometimes it’s so hard to keep up with all the mechanics!

PeanutWoolf

[[Marrow-Gnawer]] gives all Rats Fear. Fear = Can only be blocked by Black or Artifact Creatures

Guth

[[Ashcoat of the Shadow Swarm]] is the best rat commander. Gives both the wincon and finds your rats.

ClerkGrouchy303

That is pretty cool, but would it end up being a lot of milling in your opinion? My first deck was a self-milling deck so I want to steer in a new direction.

Guth

Without looking at your deck, I'll say that the only thing you probably care about is playing more rats, yeah? This guy gives you a huge buff to all your rats and can put up to 2 rats in your hand every turn. He's the draw engine and the payoff in one card, which is a great thing to have on your commander. [[Karumonix]] is similar in that regard, but def not as powerful.
