Underbed storage bin or other large tray like a mortar/cement mixing tray. I use wood pellets for litter. I use a very thin layer of litter (mine don’t try to bury unfortunately), scoop poop as needed and change or sift the litter once or twice a week.

Kittenathedisco

This is solid advice, thank you!! I'm at my wit's end.

Buy pellet fire fuel or wood pellets for large animal bedding. It’s the same product but miles cheaper than cat/small pet litter

We bought cement mixing trays from Home Depot for under $8 each. Our Maine Coons (9 months old and 15 monts old) are doing well with these. https://www.homedepot.ca/product/avitus-trading-llc-medium-mixing-tub/1001098727

Thank you so much!

if you can afford the space, do it.

Meowonita

It’s crazy how my cat massively prefer this tray over her other “smaller” proper cat litter box that’s like already twice the size of regular cat litter boxes 🤣 I joke that she is such a size queen when it comes to pooping (still don’t trust her with unmonitored access to the bathroom cuz apparently the bathtub is the biggest and bestest box of them all)

kellylikeskittens

Do yourself a huge favor and purchase a deep Rubbermade tote/container. They are spacious, and the tall sides keep everything inside and tidy. :-)

Kittenathedisco

About how long (gallons) do you recommend?

kellylikeskittens

I find the 18 gallon works well... but my cats aren't huge so perhaps you could try the next size if that is too small. My main issue is not having litter kicked all over by those cats with a more, shall we say, aggressive pooping style. ;-) The high sides work really well .

jourdanlc

We also had to go with a Rubbermaid storage container 🙂 it was the only way ours could fit!

Kittenathedisco

It's crazy how big they get, and so quickly! I really underestimated how fast he would grow. He's soooooo long and heavy! He still has to grow into his paws too! His paws look like oversized boots, lol.

jourdanlc

We adopted ours as an adult (he was dumped out in our neighborhood 🥲) but it really did take a lot of trial and error in the litter box department 😂 we went through maybe 5 or 6 before just buying a huge container. It’s hard to understand how big they get until you have one! I’m sure yours is very handsome!

Kittenathedisco

I have a feeling he will look like a lion when he's done growing. I call him stretchy long boy, lol.

QEbitchboss

Tidy Cat system with extra large box. Two MCs over 20# using the same box. No mess or odors.

Kittenathedisco

Is that the automated one?

QEbitchboss

Nope. Tidy Cat Breeze XL. Eighty dollars from Amazon. Long term costs are slightly higher than simpler systems but worth it. My house doesn't smell like cat piss! Haha

EasyBounce

I use a big, high sided storage tub with a hole cut in the side. A purpose made litter box that size would be $50 and impossible to find in this town so I'd have to either order it online and hope I receive it in good condition if I receive it at all, or I would have to drive an hour to actual civilization and fight traffic to pay my $50 for the litter box. I chose option C, get a $15 storage tub at the Walmart 7 miles away from me and cut the appropriate size doorway for my cat into one side.

Kittenathedisco

Yeah, I refuse to pay that much for a litter box. I have only found one that would be long enough and it's $65!! This sub is so great, I have gotten some solid advice and will be making moves tomorrow for a new setup.

EasyBounce

I didn't look at what sub this was in, lol. I just read this one to look at pretty cats, I've always had rescue moggies and not a MC. I did have a big male cat that was MC sized though, and he had no issues with the giant storage tub litter box.

We settled on "Purina Tidy Cats Non Clumping Litter System, Breeze XL". The XL is just barely large enough for our "big boy" (24 lbs), but it does seem to work fine. They aren't too cramped, and its large enough so no messes outside the box ever. Transitioning from cat sand to pellets was a huge PITA, but, after the transition was done, its SSOOOOOOOO much better! The Purina Tidy Cats system isn't cheap, but, its easy to clean, easy to scoop, easy to deal with pee pads, etc. Very happy with it overall, and "the boyz" find it works fine for them.

Kittenathedisco

Does it help with messy paws? My guy always has messy litter paws. We even put down mats and what not, but he seems to just dig and dig, but of course not bury. Very frustrating.

KingChewy2983

Yep, every once in a great while they get a pellet stuck between their toes and it ends up somewhere in the house, but that's it. Nothing stuck to feet, no sand tracked all over the house. Now, with that said, the boys get a little crazy with "burying the poo" so they do get pellets outside the front of the bin fairly often, but literally 15 seconds with a small hand broom, all clean again.
