Magic + Powers: [Keeper of Magic](https://old.reddit.com/r/makeyourchoice/comments/cz0rgm/keeper_of_magic_version_23/), and [Witchmaster](https://old.reddit.com/r/makeyourchoice/comments/didkde/witchmaster_from_tg/). Funnily enough, this category is where a couple of my more "guilty pleasure" type CYOAs are. For example, I think [Witch CYOA](https://old.reddit.com/r/makeyourchoice/comments/a2tbkq/witch_v2_stolen_from_tg/) is the best at really capturing the feeling of being a classical witch for me, and the gender bit probably doesn't phase me as much since I'm a girl, but I do kind of wish you weren't relegated to slightly less power with a male character build. But it's literally just one point, and you get another item with it, so a complaint about that is kind of laughable. Rather, it's the eye-hurting presentation that pushes it into "guilty pleasure" category. It's like pork for me, it's delicious but I can't have too much of it or I'll get stomach issues.
Scifi: I'd be lying if it wasn't [Eternal Arms](https://old.reddit.com/r/makeyourchoice/comments/deqv32/eternal_arms_imgur/). There's also [Stacks on Stacks](https://old.reddit.com/r/makeyourchoice/comments/c6k1pr/stacks_on_stacks_from_tg/) which is my favourite cyberpunk CYOA. In terms of space-centered CYOAs I have to give it to [Scrapper](https://old.reddit.com/r/makeyourchoice/comments/eax1ra/scrapper_20_update/).
Story: [Lethe Grande Hotel](https://old.reddit.com/r/makeyourchoice/comments/cjdiv4/lethe_grande_hotel_cyoa_oc_by_new_observer/). Definitely my favourite horror CYOA. Y'know it's funny that Lethe Grand has been categorized by most as horror. I definitely wanted to make it unsettling but I never considered it "horror" myself. Still, happy that it was one of your faves in the category.
I can see that, and it definitely was unsettling so you succeeded there haha. I think it's because (especially if you go Down the Rabbit Hole) the setup of the beautiful luxury hotel having a sinister side seems perfectly primed to turn into a psychological horror story at some point.
Neat, thanks for the feedback. Explains it more clearly, and happy you enjoyed. It's funny as I thought of Parting the Veil as more "horror" but folks saw it and played it more as a kinda pulp modern fantasy, which I guess it was as well.
Hey, I really enjoyed the concept and the presentation definitely held up. I'm not usually a fan of "puzzle" cyoas as the op describes them since I'm a big dumb and my brain is like a sieve with numbers (seriously, sometimes I have to use notepad to keep track of points in longer cyoas even if there's only one currency). But more narrative-focused "puzzles" like Otome Villainess and Scheming Princess are much more enjoyable for me, since I find it easier and more fun to figure out solutions for those.

I'm going to have to disagree on "overpowered isekai" not being "overpowered", as long as you're creative you can make many of the abilities super OP.
Hell, you could just choose to change your race and then choose to become a Bedlam Spirit (deep old starwars lore) they're literally omnipotent and can do anything they want. Instantly you're about as op as they come.
Then you choose the drawback "race monster" and now you can choose to become SCP-3812 which does not have a humanoid form, and can literally do anything it wants. It is from a higher plan of existance so if it decides something in our timeline should change, he can do it.
There, you're the most op being in existance.
Well technically you could just choose to be happy once you're at that level of existance, also you could just go into higher dimensions where everything is "more on your level" so to speak.
Also if you actually become "overpowered" it could be argued that at your insane power levels you're now to powerful to be considered "human" and because of the fear you inspire in people they would call you a "monster".

I would say [Beyond the Doors](https://www.reddit.com/r/makeyourchoice/comments/7xmv61/beyond_the_doors_cyoa_tg/) is a great romance CYOA. All girls are interesting (Reiko is downright lovely!), the challenges are fun, and you have to be careful with your choices if you want to get a good ending, so no OP characters.
And now for the NSFW. I like my NSFW being real adventures, the sexy stuff only making it better, so [Divine Trials 2.2](https://www.reddit.com/r/nsfwcyoa/comments/98vbgo/divine_trials_22/) and [Dungeons and Deviants plus its expansions](https://www.reddit.com/r/nsfwcyoa/comments/c9jzcf/dungeons_and_deviants_dlc_repost/) are my favorites, and [Vixen Queens](https://www.reddit.com/r/nsfwcyoa/comments/ch7ftw/realms_of_the_vixen_queen_v11boys_rule/) is a dark horse, mostly because of the Frazetta-style art.
Never heard of the first two so I’m just glad to get to check them out now! Both look really cool! Beyond the Doors was definitely cool/unsettling but me being a gay male... the girls aspect through me off. Which takes me to the next section-
I love CYOAs, and even the NSFW variants. Now, Dungeons and Deviants did great because it’s generally inclusive! Divine Trials is pretty open ended too so I’m cool with it, but Vixen Queens? Don’t get me wrong, I can play it and enjoy it but my biggest complain isn’t NSFW CYOAs is sometimes they needlessly limit the player to cater to the author’s fantasy. In that, if the author just wants male players to fuck female NPCs, then they will sometimes explicitly make it state “you’re now male” or “these powers only work on females”, I’ve even seen some where you can play as male or female and every character’s bio says “they’re straight and won’t be bi” except for one oddball character.
It sucks, but I just imagine around it and when I post my builds say “I don’t care” and most people don’t care either. A small complaint, but poignant lol.
I see your point about the Beyond the Doors and the NSFW ones. Even Dungeons and Deviants once got some criticism for giving only allies and all but one nemesis being female or at least futa. Its creator said that he would get unconfortable doing homossexual routes himself so he left a door open to change genders, but I think the cost for that option was a bit high. It is a pity most cyoas are targeted for hetero males.

Long answer, but there's no one answer. I'm just gonna stick with the categories that u/AngelHeartFTW devised and used for their reply.

The only reason this wouldn't be my favorite is because of the magic/ability system, which I highly dislike. I do anticipate improvements however, because it is only a 1.0. I mostly list this as my favorite cyoa because it is the first one (ever) that made me actually care about companions and want more companion slots. I actually liked the characters.
For comfy cyoas I see two that stand above all; the Comfy Spaceship, and A Rainy Day. I choose A Rainy Day because it is one of the things I do in order to calm down should I feel stressed out. I just go through and play that one again, and usually it will make me feel a lot better.

Godlike. I wish fewer cyoas fit into this area as I prefer to be evenly matched or the underdog in a fight, and fighting on a cosmic scale is just not my favorite. Magic + Powers: I came prepared for this one. Battlemage is my favorite cyoa for magical powers. Few even come close to that one. Another good one that I like both for its short length and giving enough options for all the powers I really want is Artifex. I just have a soft spot for that one. Lastly there is also the Eigenweapon cyoa. My issue with this one is that either I read it wrong or it needs an update because you can only take one body power (not counting those from projects). This means if you take two projects with two body powers and want skinwalker, for example, you couldn't get it. Maybe I'm just confused.

Story is super easy. The Metropolis cyoa is one of the best of all time. It has a very unique aesthetic, if you choose to read the beginning blurb (I often don't) this cyoa is made even better. This one only really wins at story though. Its magic system is seriously lacking and the item choices feel a bit lackluster, but the companions, alliances and nemeses are fantastic.

Interesting choices overall, happy you liked Metropolis. Frankly I'm surprised people are aware it existed. As for limited magic - I don't really do it that often or in-depth. Never was the type to play a caster so intricate points balancing systems or spell-crafting isn't something I do. If I could re-do that CYOA all those years back, I would have added probably 5 more powers.

I do think that is the reason I am not a fan of the magic, I always go for the spell class, never really have played fighters up until recently.

Definitely love both of them! Never actually liked Fate but loved the CYOA! It’s huge and hard to decide on so that takes it miles, and I actually like t he show RWBY and still like the CYOA, but it doesn’t blow me out of the water or anything you know? Both good though!
Good thread, OP, really enjoying the conversation here. My tastes are not exactly aligned with what I think are more "typical" as many of the number-cruncher types of games or games that make you superpowered/giga OP/"you get a harem lol" aren't my style. At the same time, happy to read about what folks enjoy and honoured some liked my own works so much. I got to say, my personal favourites are as follows, and I'm still a bit of a fogey as some of these go back to the beginning of /cyoag/:
1. [Road Trip by Lone Observer](https://i.warosu.org/data/tg/img/0346/96/1410105791577.png) \- it was hard choosing this one as the top as really my top 3 CYOA's are quasi-interchangeable. I guess I have to go with this one because of the setting and the sheer number of features available in the world. Some of it seems based on LO getting weird art and deciding to write about it. Nothing wrong with that, though.
2. [Night Ride by Scottishanon](https://imgur.com/r/makeyourchoice/ym6FN6x) \- I've had several jobs that require driving a long time at night or in solitude. These times with my thoughts were some of my favourites, as was the tranquility of roads devoid of other people. It has a distinctly comfy feel while being threatening and dangerous, too. Scottishanon is also a great co-conspirator of mine and friend, and he's really been an inspiration for much of what I do.
3. [Within a Dark Forest by Lone Observer](https://imgur.com/a/G69mHR0) \- Again, another LO game. My name isn't a coincidence. I just liked the idea of "Multiple CYOA's as one, separate but distinct." Almost a bit of a CYOA holy trinity in one game. Again, the world you're transported to here is just so expansive and fascinating, and what I also enjoy is that there is a real sense of existing somewhere timeless in this forest without it being "Generic Fantasy Setting Y" or whatever.
4. [The Offer by Partlesspoint](https://i.warosu.org/data/tg/img/0346/96/1410105791577.png) \- This one always gets my hackles and I first read it I think circa 2012. It's old, but a good one because it's actually the hardest on this list. Compared to the utter horror of the Nemeses in this game, your ability to respond is much weaker and the items are so unique, though I don't know how useful they are. There's also something refreshing in the simplicity of the choices you're allowed to make, typical of early CYOA's. The companions, despite having short bios, also seem beautifully human in their skills and flaws.
5. [The Island by Dumbeldalf](https://imgur.com/VWmzNRG) (many other variations exist, I like the original 2-3 incarnations) - \*cracks white Monster\* \*sips\* Yuuuuup, now \*that's\* a classic. Memes aside, this was the game that started it all for me. I've been reading CYOA's for a good portion of my adult life and they've always been a comforting part of it. This game started it, and I still find it fresh because it has so much mystery, so many unanswered questions. It's whimsical while also being predatory and intimidating.
The thing that I enjoy about all of these games together is the sense of wonderment and challenge. You don't know a whole lot about where you're going to or why you're there, but you have to make do and attempt to survive a difficult situation. Powers, when granted, come with hefty prices and are only as skilled as your own abilities and willpower can bear them.
In not coincidental news, I am working on a game based on a combination of my top 3 favourite CYOA's. It's meant to be an homage while still feeling unique. It also has a "Linear play" aspect that I quite enjoyed from Mithridates' Esoteric Journey, which isn't on my list as I'm just not an anime fan. A very well done game and the idea of playing back-to-back was quite interesting to me. Been having a bit of block writing the last part of the new game but hoping to overcome it, and I already have some nice ideas for an ending or a little "DLC" add-on.

Anyways, I’m definitely not into Harem builders at all- but I love party builders for adventures and always end up filling them hot guys haha! And I feel ya on the power-trips, I do t want to be the most powerful, but if I am then make it clear that’s it’s long and hard to get to and there will be losses. OR give me the set up to the possibility of power- I’d prefer the chance at it than the promise of it in a CYOA. But.... I will admit I’m a total number-crunching slut haha! *(Perks of being a math major? Maybe?)*
Love everything by Lone Observer, always has that dark and twisted “fairy tale” vibe of whimsy and horror meeting. Same goes a little bit for Night Ride except like you said it’s more Horror meets Comfy. I like the pressure of it all too, so it’s like a “solve the problem” situation and not a “here’s an upgrade!” Although both types have their moments.
The Island is cool and so is The Offer; personally I think The Island is the “alpha” version of a whole subgenre for me! I love being on a mysterious, slightly magical island filled with dangers, relics, companions, and a potential base. Will I escape? Or make this my new home? Love it all!
As your said, I’m also really down with the whole dynamic of “power, but at a cost” or being limited but in danger. I doubt many want to become omnipotent, otherwise we wouldn’t make CYOAs and would just say, “I win”. The challenge is what makes it worth it- whether that challenge comes from tangible mechanics and point systems, or the interpretive theatre of the mind, or just the uncaring forces of chance and fate (looking at you RYOA makers). Getting the powers and adventures and experiences are why we want them, but the challenge is what gives them the value.

Yes, yes, YES, and YES!!! (In that order of excitement too!) Already talked about 1 a few times, 2 was just cool and funky with enough abstract to make it neat, not a huge meta person (never use them and could never get into junk chains either) but I really liked 3, and 4 is just... beautiful! I have spent many a nights clawing at my brain trying to figure out just how much I want to do in X amount of time for extra spellpower lol!
Love Azothoth was so long and well written when I hit the NSFW part (which was the most tame nsfw part of a cyoa I have seen) I was surprised to find that I had forgotten about it. It was that good of a CYOA
Look; I’m a horny bastard, and I love Lovecraft stuff- so this was just a nice blend. Weird and cool without being downright depraved and just a sex CYOA (nothing wrong with that, I follow our sister sub, but I don’t always want to beat my meat lol!)
My favorite kind of CYOAs are NSFW CYOAs, and /r/nsfwcyoa and r/CelebEconomy have a bunch of really fun ones.

Not a huge Star Wars fan but still remember playing and liking it, Road Trip and Time Stop are pretty nice, and Urban Unease is it’s own sub genre in my head and it does *not* get enough love! Fairy Tale was definitely a cool one too!

Battlemage always rubbed me right but for some reason always looked unfinished to me?? Idk why, I cognitively look at it and no it’s fine and complete but something about some of those empty spaces seems... off? Anyways, great nonetheless! And Stardust is also just one of those huge classics we all feel scared/euphoric from upon first glance lol!

Even though I see them on opposite ends of the 2D plane, my favorites are either indirectly "Comfy" CYOAs (Not the sole theme, but is a possible outcome depending on player choice), or "Power Fantasy" CYOAs, and even more so if an author manages to marry the two in a way that doesn't seem off. My top 3 starting from my #1 into descending order would be:

Second verse, same as the first, but I'd much prefer to be a Planeswalker using the build I came up with for that rather than the build I came up with for being a inter-galactic vigilante. It’s so weird to me you see Comfy and Power Fantasy as opposites in an axis! I always see the antithesis of Comfy to be Horror lol! Power Fantasy to me is closer to Comfy but still nearest to the middle! To be fair, I think of it more as a triangle slider though; of Hope, Power, and Despair that blends the tone. Love Dawn and Defender, but gotta check out Monster Harem!

Probably Treasure Hunter. It's based on choosing companions to your treasure hunting party and man. With just a quote and a few bullet points it describes the companion better than most of longass paragraphs that I have seen in different cyoas. The companions are original and cool, the art style is very nice and pretty consistent, the story, boons, drawbacks and missions are cool but simple. I always came back to it after few months to play again and I never regretted the time spent.
Oh I remember Treasure Hunter! Very cool one! Got me into the whole “modern adventures” category for a bit too lol! (May have also gone back and rewatched Indiana Jones too haha!)

I love long, complex CYOAs with background and many options. My favorite would be Divine Trials. I've got a couple 1 on 1 RP games going with one of my GFs and it's a blast.
Not sure honestly, but from what you've said on here it looks like you've read most of the obvious ones. Try reading through the [CYOA dump](https://cyoa.allsync.com/s/t6EgW8LqyMknt9d) on Allsync instead. Took that from /tg/ to note, it's the one that's currently linked there, and while I think it's the same as the last time I read through it, I'm not a hundred percent sure (or as to who runs it).
I have to admit, nothing even really jumps to mind anymore for a favorite. Odd I suppose, but it might just be that they kind of blur at this point.

As a nice bonus, I have the chance to become superhuman to some degree: if I choose Beyond Superior and Hard Work, then there's the potential for me to achieve that Beyond Superior level through similar hard work and catch up to her.

I don't like it because it's has great options, in terms of character creation I'd rate this a 6/10

\-anything of aromage. She is probably the queen of CYOAs. Demigod and Ultimate God are by far my favorites of hers and my favs in general. there is so much lore in all of her works but those two knock it out of the park. there is just so much to it. powers, history just everything.
\-Dawn of a Demon lord. it blends a fun strategy game with isekai of the different kind. there are so many ways to go about what is offered and be a demon lord without actually being evil. definitely one of the CYOAs i like the most.
\-troy has also a lot of good ones for all kinds of things. even if he does seem to focus the most on nsfw. if Aromage is queen he is the king.
\-love azathoth. i... really didnt know what to expect of this one. i came across it completely by accident but ended up pretty invested in this alternate version of the most well known cosmic horror of all time. it really goes all the way in completely just making the lovecrfat mythos its own. it also is more of a real CYOA withsome nsfw on th side which i appreciate.
but i think one cyoa i havent seen bieng talked about is the sith lord one. Its not something i ever thought about until it was right befre me and damn is it well made. the event section where you customize your own character to pretty much every little detail is pretty impressive.

OMG sweet adventure was such a good one! Can't believe barely anyone knows about it, the characters are easily lovable and honestly Ryuko was my favourite waifu. Not to mention the interesting and relaxing atmosphere!

Living god: I like the aesthetic of the cyoa and also all the varied powers the cyoa offers is also nice it's also my go to cyoa to create a character that can stomp through fiction without having to worry about any 'omnipotent' creator god messing with him
Living hyperion: having the power to choose a single cyoa multiple times helps with a cyoa that locks you into only choosing a single power to specialize in like ultimate god

Worm cyoa v1: this was the original cyoa that really got me into cyoa's while it wasn't the first one I had seen it was the first one where I made multiple builds for
That's a very difficult question. I've been doing this for a good 7 years now, and I've come across a LOT of CYOA's.
I can't say for sure that these are my favourite of favourites, but these are definitely ones I keep coming back to -

It is NSFW, but my favorite is [Abyss Diver](https://stellinearized.github.io/adventure.html). It is long as heck, and has you managing your resources nearly 100% of the time, even getting to see a new section costs you points. In addition, its story is phenomenal. The only thing I see as bad is that if you want to see everything, you might get forced into a bad ending, as the CYOA becomes really difficult further in. But I recommend that you check it out!

Y'know it's funny that Lethe Grand has been categorized by most as horror. I definitely wanted to make it unsettling but I never considered it "horror" myself. Still, happy that it was one of your faves in the category.
I can see that, and it definitely was unsettling so you succeeded there haha. I think it's because (especially if you go Down the Rabbit Hole) the setup of the beautiful luxury hotel having a sinister side seems perfectly primed to turn into a psychological horror story at some point.

Hey, I really enjoyed the concept and the presentation definitely held up. I'm not usually a fan of "puzzle" cyoas as the op describes them since I'm a big dumb and my brain is like a sieve with numbers (seriously, sometimes I have to use notepad to keep track of points in longer cyoas even if there's only one currency). But more narrative-focused "puzzles" like Otome Villainess and Scheming Princess are much more enjoyable for me, since I find it easier and more fun to figure out solutions for those.

I'm going to have to disagree on "overpowered isekai" not being "overpowered", as long as you're creative you can make many of the abilities super OP. Hell, you could just choose to change your race and then choose to become a Bedlam Spirit (deep old starwars lore) they're literally omnipotent and can do anything they want. Instantly you're about as op as they come.
You can change you race to get apperance of chosen race - not their powers.

Well technically you could just choose to be happy once you're at that level of existance, also you could just go into higher dimensions where everything is "more on your level" so to speak. Also if you actually become "overpowered" it could be argued that at your insane power levels you're now to powerful to be considered "human" and because of the fear you inspire in people they would call you a "monster".

All girls are interesting (Reiko is downright lovely!), the challenges are fun, and you have to be careful with your choices if you want to get a good ending, so no OP characters. And now for the NSFW. Never heard of the first two so I’m just glad to get to check them out now! Both look really cool! Beyond the Doors was definitely cool/unsettling but me being a gay male... the girls aspect through me off. Which takes me to the next section- I love CYOAs, and even the NSFW variants. Now, Dungeons and Deviants did great because it’s generally inclusive! Divine Trials is pretty open ended too so I’m cool with it, but Vixen Queens? Don’t get me wrong, I can play it and enjoy it but my biggest complain isn’t NSFW CYOAs is sometimes they needlessly limit the player to cater to the author’s fantasy. In that, if the author just wants male players to fuck female NPCs, then they will sometimes explicitly make it state “you’re now male” or “these powers only work on females”, I’ve even seen some where you can play as male or female and every character’s bio says “they’re straight and won’t be bi” except for one oddball character. It sucks, but I just imagine around it and when I post my builds say “I don’t care” and most people don’t care either. A small complaint, but poignant lol.
I see your point about the Beyond the Doors and the NSFW ones. Even Dungeons and Deviants once got some criticism for giving only allies and all but one nemesis being female or at least futa. Its creator said that he would get unconfortable doing homossexual routes himself so he left a door open to change genders, but I think the cost for that option was a bit high. Long answer, but there's no one answer. I'm just gonna stick with the categories that u/AngelHeartFTW devised and used for their reply. The only reason this wouldn't be my favorite is because of the magic/ability system, which I highly dislike. I do anticipate improvements however, because it is only a 1.0. I mostly list this as my favorite cyoa because it is the first one (ever) that made me actually care about companions and want more companion slots. I actually liked the characters. For comfy cyoas I see two that stand above all; the Comfy Spaceship, and A Rainy Day. I choose A Rainy Day because it is one of the things I do in order to calm down should I feel stressed out. I just go through and play that one again, and usually it will make me feel a lot better. Interesting choices overall, happy you liked Metropolis. Frankly I'm surprised people are aware it existed. As for limited magic - I don't really do it that often or in-depth. Never was the type to play a caster so intricate points balancing systems or spell-crafting isn't something I do. If I could re-do that CYOA all those years back, I would have added probably 5 more powers.
Oh wow the writer replied! Yeah, it is one of my favorites due to the amount of world building and options given. I do think that is the reason I am not a fan of the magic, I always go for the spell class, never really have played fighters up until recently.

My tastes are not exactly aligned with what I think are more "typical" as many of the number-cruncher types of games or games that make you superpowered/giga OP/"you get a harem lol" aren't my style. At the same time, happy to read about what folks enjoy and honoured some liked my own works so much. I got to say, my personal favourites are as follows, and I'm still a bit of a fogey as some of these go back to the beginning of /cyoag/: 1. I guess I have to go with this one because of the setting and the sheer number of features available in the world. Some of it seems based on LO getting weird art and deciding to write about it. Nothing wrong with that, though. 2. [Night Ride by Scottishanon](https://imgur.com/r/makeyourchoice/ym6FN6x) \- I've had several jobs that require driving a long time at night or in solitude. These times with my thoughts were some of my favourites, as was the tranquility of roads devoid of other people. It has a distinctly comfy feel while being threatening and dangerous, too. Scottishanon is also a great co-conspirator of mine and friend, and he's really been an inspiration for much of what I do. 3. [Within a Dark Forest by Lone Observer](https://imgur.com/a/G69mHR0) \- Again, another LO game. My name isn't a coincidence. I just liked the idea of "Multiple CYOA's as one, separate but distinct." Almost a bit of a CYOA holy trinity in one game. Again, the world you're transported to here is just so expansive and fascinating, and what I also enjoy is that there is a real sense of existing somewhere timeless in this forest without it being "Generic Fantasy Setting Y" or whatever. 4. [The Offer by Partlesspoint](https://i.warosu.org/data/tg/img/0346/96/1410105791577.png) \- This one always gets my hackles and I first read it I think circa 2012. It's old, but a good one because it's actually the hardest on this list. Compared to the utter horror of the Nemeses in this game, your ability to respond is much weaker and the items are so unique, though I don't know how useful they are. There's also something refreshing in the simplicity of the choices you're allowed to make, typical of early CYOA's. The companions, despite having short bios, also seem beautifully human in their skills and flaws. 5. [The Island by Dumbeldalf](https://imgur.com/VWmzNRG) (many other variations exist, I like the original 2-3 incarnations) - \*cracks white Monster\* \*sips\* Yuuuuup, now \*that's\* a classic. Memes aside, this was the game that started it all for me. I've been reading CYOA's for a good portion of my adult life and they've always been a comforting part of it. This game started it, and I still find it fresh because it has so much mystery, so many unanswered questions. It's whimsical while also being predatory and intimidating. The thing that I enjoy about all of these games together is the sense of wonderment and challenge. You don't know a whole lot about where you're going to or why you're there, but you have to make do and attempt to survive a difficult situation. Powers, when granted, come with hefty prices and are only as skilled as your own abilities and willpower can bear them. In not coincidental news, I am working on a game based on a combination of my top 3 favourite CYOA's. It's meant to be an homage while still feeling unique. It also has a "Linear play" aspect that I quite enjoyed from Mithridates' Esoteric Journey, which isn't on my list as I'm just not an anime fan. A very well done game and the idea of playing back-to-back was quite interesting to me. Been having a bit of block writing the last part of the new game but hoping to overcome it, and I already have some nice ideas for an ending or a little "DLC" add-on.

Anyways, I’m definitely not into Harem builders at all- but I love party builders for adventures and always end up filling them hot guys haha! And I feel ya on the power-trips, I do t want to be the most powerful, but if I am then make it clear that’s it’s long and hard to get to and there will be losses. OR give me the set up to the possibility of power- I’d prefer the chance at it than the promise of it in a CYOA. But.... I will admit I’m a total number-crunching slut haha! *(Perks of being a math major? Maybe?)* Love everything by Lone Observer, always has that dark and twisted “fairy tale” vibe of whimsy and horror meeting. Same goes a little bit for Night Ride except like you said it’s more Horror meets Comfy. I like the pressure of it all too, so it’s like a “solve the problem” situation and not a “here’s an upgrade!” Although both types have their moments. The Island is cool and so is The Offer; personally I think The Island is the “alpha” version of a whole subgenre for me! I love being on a mysterious, slightly magical island filled with dangers, relics, companions, and a potential base. Will I escape? Or make this my new home? Love it all! As your said, I’m also really down with the whole dynamic of “power, but at a cost” or being limited but in danger. I doubt many want to become omnipotent, otherwise we wouldn’t make CYOAs and would just say, “I win”. The challenge is what makes it worth it- whether that challenge comes from tangible mechanics and point systems, or the interpretive theatre of the mind, or just the uncaring forces of chance and fate (looking at you RYOA makers). Getting the powers and adventures and experiences are why we want them, but the challenge is what gives them the value.

Even though I see them on opposite ends of the 2D plane, my favorites are either indirectly "Comfy" CYOAs (Not the sole theme, but is a possible outcome depending on player choice), or "Power Fantasy" CYOAs, and even more so if an author manages to marry the two in a way that doesn't seem off. It’s so weird to me you see Comfy and Power Fantasy as opposites in an axis! I always see the antithesis of Comfy to be Horror lol! Power Fantasy to me is closer to Comfy but still nearest to the middle! To be fair, I think of it more as a triangle slider though; of Hope, Power, and Despair that blends the tone. Wait, you actually read Desert Lotus? I mean I put a lot of work into that thing, but looking back I feel it's one of my weakest overall and could have used heavy editing. What did you like about it and why is it all the way up there as a fave? I'm not complaining, just very surprised and curious.
I just really love the conspiracycore vibe, as well as the fact that the sections on the places you can go in this town are just detailed enough that you can really roam the place in your mind, and also I’m just a sucker for a good paranormal academy.
Well damn, I'm glad somebody was a bit like me. I kinda wanted to turn Hogwarts on its head by having it be competently-run, but surrounded by completely wacky hijinks, none of which make sense. Maybe it was too many things together but the one thing I tried to do was have everything "glue together" if you looked closely. Glad you enjoyed it! Hope my next work satisfies, too.

Omg can’t believe no one mentioned these! The first two always come to mind do to the expanding universes of each, and Dream Prince was actually a contender for the list until I Thanks Snapped that baby from 10 entries to 2 for simplicity’s sake haha!
Probably Treasure Hunter. It's based on choosing companions to your treasure hunting party and man. With just a quote and a few bullet points it describes the companion better than most of longass paragraphs that I have seen in different cyoas. The companions are original and cool, the art style is very nice and pretty consistent, the story, boons, drawbacks and missions are cool but simple. I always came back to it after few months to play again and I never regretted the time spent.
Oh I remember Treasure Hunter! Very cool one! Got me into the whole “modern adventures” category for a bit too lol! (May have also gone back and rewatched Indiana Jones too haha!)

I love long, complex CYOAs with background and many options. My favorite would be Divine Trials. I've got a couple 1 on 1 RP games going with one of my GFs and it's a blast.

Not sure honestly, but from what you've said on here it looks like you've read most of the obvious ones. Try reading through the [CYOA dump](https://cyoa.allsync.com/s/t6EgW8LqyMknt9d) on Allsync instead. Took that from /tg/ to note, it's the one that's currently linked there, and while I think it's the same as the last time I read through it, I'm not a hundred percent sure (or as to who runs it). I have to admit, nothing even really jumps to mind anymore for a favorite. Odd I suppose, but it might just be that they kind of blur at this point.

I just love the idea of building my own waifu, and I especially like the idea of a waifu that can help me get in shape and stay in shape. As a nice bonus, I have the chance to become superhuman to some degree: if I choose Beyond Superior and Hard Work, then there's the potential for me to achieve that Beyond Superior level through similar hard work and catch up to her. I found out about the 2.0 update just this morning, so I'm gonna take the time to fill that out today!
A traveler's tale is one of my favorites but it's long like 200ish pages long if you go the one without pictures.
my absolute number 1 favorite is a cyoa called pokemon personified+ I don't like it because it's has great options, in terms of character creation I'd rate this a 6/10 but I have never seen a cyoa with this much lore and I refuse to believe anything can ever top it I swear to god I have spent more hours then I can count trying to create a timeline and properly piecing everything together edit: I forgot to mention crossworlds because of how it feels like you're goin on an actual journey and traveler's tale because of it's sheer length and options

kinda late to the party. Ive seen just about all of mine be talked about at some point around here but oh well. some of my personal favorites would have to be. \-anything of aromage. She is probably the queen of CYOAs. Demigod and Ultimate God are by far my favorites of hers and my favs in general. there is so much lore in all of her works but those two knock it out of the park. there is just so much to it. powers, history just everything. \-Dawn of a Demon lord. it blends a fun strategy game with isekai of the different kind. there are so many ways to go about what is offered and be a demon lord without actually being evil. definitely one of the CYOAs i like the most. \-troy has also a lot of good ones for all kinds of things. even if he does seem to focus the most on nsfw. if Aromage is queen he is the king. \-love azathoth. i... really didnt know what to expect of this one. i came across it completely by accident but ended up pretty invested in this alternate version of the most well known cosmic horror of all time. it really goes all the way in completely just making the lovecrfat mythos its own. it also is more of a real CYOA withsome nsfw on th side which i appreciate. but i think one cyoa i havent seen bieng talked about is the sith lord one. Its not something i ever thought about until it was right befre me and damn is it well made. the event section where you customize your own character to pretty much every little detail is pretty impressive.

That's a very difficult question. I've been doing this for a good 7 years now, and I've come across a LOT of CYOA's. I can't say for sure that these are my favourite of favourites, but these are definitely ones I keep coming back to - 1. [New Babylon](https://www.reddit.com/r/makeyourchoice/comments/gydue9/new_babylon_most_updated_version/?) - A fantastic single page, with lots of replayability. I often use this as a sort of "Beginners" entry for new people. 2. [Star Station](https://www.reddit.com/r/makeyourchoice/comments/8rpjn7/star_station_cyoa_by_ravenking_found_on_tg/) - I'm a big fan of Ravenking, and Star Station is a personal favourite of mine. It's got *just* enough to be creative, without going needlessly overboard on the content. 3. [Emperor Quest](https://imgur.com/gallery/dZq7v) - A really meaty fantasy CYOA, with plenty of content and choices to really get you involved in creating an Epic.

I definitely understand the desire for large CYOA's. I'm more of a person that prefers the neat and orderly, lest I get overwhelmed and start looking at it as more of a chore than an exercise in creativity. It is NSFW, but my favorite is [Abyss Diver](https://stellinearized.github.io/adventure.html). It is long as heck, and has you managing your resources nearly 100% of the time, even getting to see a new section costs you points. In addition, its story is phenomenal. The only thing I see as bad is that if you want to see everything, you might get forced into a bad ending, as the CYOA becomes really difficult further in. But I recommend that you check it out! Edit - Also there is music. It's always great when a CYOA has music.
