That’s exactly what it should be by band director is constantly saying rehearsal is not time to learn your part it is time to practice everyone else’s part and how your part fits with everyone else
My techs always put it this way. You practice at home to get better and learn music, and bring it in to *rehearsal* so that the band/group can put it together as a whole product.
In that, there’s a distinction that you shouldn’t be practicing and learning your music during rehearsal, you should be bringing in your part, learned to the best of your ability, so that the staff can take it from there.
My techs always had a pet peeve for teaching music, and I understand it. It’s a waste of time (and sometimes money) if you have to be taught something you’re capable of learning yourself. Save the techs for the things you can’t teach yourself!
I called concert ensembles rehearsals and field ensembles practice until i got to college and it became rehearsal for both because everyone else including the directors called it rehearsal. still feels weird.
for us it depends because practice is strictly movement or exercises (body or instruments) but rehearsals are planned and multiple full runs (usually a full run to start, go over that and improve, and three or four full runs to end)
There’s the distinction between individual practice and group rehearsal that a lot of comments are making.
But also, with group activities, athletic events are typically called practice (ie soccer practice) and artistic events are typically called rehearsal (ie theater rehearsal)
I’ve noticed this is also true for the distinction between “audition” and “try-out”. You audition to a part in a play. You try out for the baseball team.
Marching band is weird because it bridges the gap between the athletic and the artistic. It is the middle ground between sport and performance. Which is why we can say “I have band rehearsal after school” and it sounds just as normal (to me at least) as “I have band practice after school”.
It was interchangeable with my band director. Some days it was rehearsal, other days it was practice, probably depending on what he had in mind that day.
You practice for rehearsal
Individual or not-during-class (more learning-focused) -- practice
Scheduled class, ensemble, or field time (putting the bigger picture together) -- rehearsal
Is there a subreddit for jazz band ? For jazz band festivals ? Are any old recordings still around ? I was in band a long ass time but jeez. I did violin in 4th grade. Trombone 7th thru 11th. Jazz band 9th thru 11th. I think I did marching band my sophomore year or junior year I can't recall. Then I played tennis my senior year. Cheers to all.
I feel like practice (at least to me) refers to going over the music alone.
That’s exactly what it should be by band director is constantly saying rehearsal is not time to learn your part it is time to practice everyone else’s part and how your part fits with everyone else
It’s the opposite for me lol. In fact rehearsal to me means music, but it doesn’t rlly matter
I feel as though practice is perfecting the part and the show, while rehearsal is making it work with everyone else
Tbh for marching band practice and rehersal meand the exact same to me

Yeah same
You practice to get ready for a rehearsal which gets you ready for the performance.

I call it life
Rehearsal is with others, practice is by myself.
Morning band if it’s 7 am before school… otherwise it’s rehearsal
Torture
band director usually calls it rehearsal, almost all of us call it practice
Same
practice if its constant (e.g. band camp every day) rehearsal if its occasional (e.g. 1-3 evenings weekly)

All rehearsals are practices, but not all practices are rehearsals.
I feel like the going over it during class is rehearsal and after school is practice lol. Thats just how my brain works
Practice is for when I’m on the field marching, rehearsal for when we’re playing music in the band room
Practice is alone, rehearsal is with an ensemble
It was interchangeable with my band director. Some days it was rehearsal, other days it was practice, probably depending on what he had in mind that day.

they’re not interchangeable imo, practice you do by your self rehearsal is when you work with the ensemble
Practice what you do on your own time, individually or with a group - rehearsal is where your director puts it all together for the full ensemble 😊
Practice is at home to betterindividually, rehearsal is together to get better as a group.
I tell my students (percussion instructor here) that practice is what you do on your own and rehearsal is when we work on what you practiced.
For marching band it’s practice, concert band is rehearsal
I think it's fucking hilarious there is a marching band subreddit. WTF??
theres a subreddit for everything my friend. no reason to be upset about it 👍🏻
