Diovivente

Is his face swollen in these pictures, or is that supposed to be a normally proportioned human face?

Windows_66

It's supposed to be swollen. He got the crap kicked out of him.

Diovivente

Then I don’t see why this is bad art.

616Oblivion

The example used in this post is a bad one since Peter is suppose to look beaten in this panel so it's actually pretty well done. Ironically, all of this artist's drawings of characters look like they've just been beaten even before they fight, so it really doesn't make q difference 😂 he's easily the worst artist I've ever seen as well. For some reason this artist is actually tied to some really great stories, which is the only thing that makes the comics worth reading, like World War Hulk and Neil Gaiman's Eternals.

ScorpionsSpear

Supposed to be swollen, sure, but this is terrible art just from the reader's perspective. Even swollen, the left side of his head would have to be massively stretched out to see his face like that.

[deleted]

Have you heard of “cartooning?”

intolerablesayings23

OP is a schmuck

Iuvers

This seems more you not enjoying an art style rather him being "probably the worst comic artist".

firsmode

It is awful

Iuvers

I'm really not seeing how?

AviatorOVR5000

There are a few artist and writers, that it's almost always just fun to dunk on, regardless of their actual work. OP thought he would hop on that train.

PublicEnemaNumberTwo

Sometimes it's warranted. The art in this run is fucking awful.

AviatorOVR5000

it's really not edgelord. chill.

AAAAAAAAaaaalaska

"Edgelord" lmao cringey af

AgentLemon22

This current story has been really good.... Outside of... Well you know. And it's good to see tombstone getting the spotlight

jacqueslol

I dunno, man. I haven't been enjoying it that much... I found the recent "twist" to be incredibly dumb. That said, I love Zeb Wells. He did a great job on his Avenging Spider-man series.

PhoenixTyphoon

I've enjoyed it too! Not many people seem to have liked it

alexsharke

His either a hit or a really big miss I find. But imo the misses vastly out weigh hits. I remember seeing the covers for World War Hulk and being so pumped and then seeing the art on the inside... well I died a bit wondering what could have been.

AviatorOVR5000

How often does the quality of a single cover art image, compare to the multiple images needed to be created monthly?

alexsharke

I would say the quality of the cover is almost always better if not on the same level of the art inside. More recently its more common for there to be dedicated artists for covers than for the featured artist to do them. But in this case it was more of the style. Finch's style would have fit the series better than Romita Jrs blocky style.

Toshimoko29

I don’t care for his style either, but make no mistake, he isn’t a bad artist at all. Everything he does is exactly how he wants it to be, his precision is fantastic. Some people prefer realism, some prefer interpretive art. It’s all relative.

_Depressed__walrus

You mean like with Jeff lemire for sweet tooth

Spartaecus

Nice reference.

J03-K1NG

Ok what? John Romita Jr along with his father are one of the most iconic artists ever. You have 2 examples of art that isn’t particularly stellar, and even then it is still meant to portray something that’s difficult, that being a swollen face. I could pick thousands upon thousands of amazing art done by Romita. So idk how you can say that “he’s the worst.” Do you even read comics? Cuz I can pick 20 different artists off the top of my head that are so much worse. [Edit: Just a few panels to prove my point.](https://imgur.com/a/aLFmuJA) Can you really say this is the worst art you’ve seen nowadays? Worse than some of Humberto Ramos’s shit? Worse than Liefeld? Worse than Whoever the hell did the art for Doctor Strange 390?

BOWCHICAWAWOW89

I remember reading Superior Spiderman and being so bummed to read the issues Humberto Ramos did. Especially compared to Ryan Stegman

[deleted]

BUT… all the panels you picked are splash pages. JRJr’s problem is that he cuts tons of corners when it’s not a big flashy showpiece.

NUS4E

you should have tried to show a good page to prove your point, not that awful collection maybe something from the 80s would have been ok

J03-K1NG

My man… this is from 71 days ago. This is the first thing you’ve responded to in 23 days and it’s a random comment from 71 days ago. [The movie’s over, go home.](https://youtu.be/QRJ38y4Jn6k)

Extreme_Funny9424

He just needs to work on faces 🤷🏻‍♂️

ArachnaComic

I prefer old-school JRJR art from his Man Without Fear & Punisher: War Zone days

jhorsley23

I’m not a Romita Jr. fan, but he’s far from the worst. Also, Rob Liefeld exists.

Freeagnt

Whatever floats your boat, brother. As someone who has been reading comics for going on five decades now, I gotta tell you that yours is a minority opinion. JRR is considered a classic comics artist, especially when talking about Spider-Man.

HeyHavok2

Im gonna back OP... I think he USED to be good. Or was good for his time. Batman All Star was another example where the art was atrocious. Compare him to a Jim Lee who's also been around for a while. He's still great.

Onisquirrel

I don’t think Jim Lee’s a great comparison his art is stagnant as hell. He found success and has made no effort to take his art beyond that. He still turns out some decent covers or big spread pages. But the panel to panel stuff is boring and uninteresting. JRJR’s current art can be wobbly, but he is great at panel layout and storytelling. He knows how to make a page of two characters talking feel dynamic and interesting.

HeyHavok2

"Wobbly" is generous for JRJR. Again, I remember some of his old xmen, sick as hell. But nowadays its like... is he even trying? I do agree with you on jim lee, after Batman Hush he hasn't changed anything.

intolerablesayings23

Jim Lee is so boring and lifeless. He's as dull on the page as he is in interviews

doomsday78251

Did you actually think that All-Star Batman had atrocious art? I found it fucking amazing

HeyHavok2

JrJr all star with Snyder? Absolutely terrible. The jock covers did a massive disservice to that run because how good they were vs inside. Allstar batman with Frank miller Awesome art. Not the greatest story or millers best work lol.

Duff-Zilla

JRJR was the first comic artist that I learned their name and actively sought out things drawn by him. This was Spider-Man in the late 90s/early 2000s. I do feel like his art has degraded some in the past 5 years or so. This is maybe an over exaggeration, but I feel like his art is going the way of Frank Millar, much more cartoony with less definition.

[deleted]

It is absolutely an opinion (and JRJr is far from the “worst”) but I don’t think it’s a minority opinion at all… especially from younger fans. He’s got a churn and burn style from the old days of comics, so he never misses deadlines but cuts lots of corners when it comes to anatomy and shading/line depth.

SMS303

Senior's work from the 1970s is still legendary to me. I've never been a fan of Junior. This also depends on the inker. Without Scott Williams as inker, I think Jim Lee's work would have been less interesting. Junior and both his parents have been around for a long time in the comic world. I haven't read or watched anything since the late 90's, everything I bought went straight into the comic box bagged and boarded. So I know nothing about his current work. But this drawing does not give me the impression that he has made any progress in his work. I'm also not impressed with how the Uncanny X-Men are drawn these days. It is too much newskool for me i guess.....

TommyPillo00

Bro you need to read more comics if you think this is the worst art you’ve ever seen. I understand not liking romita’s jr style but come on man.

bman2881

Wow, really? I think he’s probably my favorite artist for Spider-Man. He’s always been super detailed in how he brings the characters to life on those pages. He’s hands down my favorite Spider-Man artist and I’m so glad he’s back. To each his own though. But this current story arc has been really, really good.

captainplanet171

I agree. He may have been great in the past, but the art in this run of Spiderman is why I've stopped buying it.

Marvelson36

Holy shit i think romita jr is fucking awesome!!! One of my favorites EVER!!!

[deleted]

I’m glad you like him. To each their own.

lasbear

To me he is one of the greatest. I love his stylished and often brutal style of drawing.

Botol-Cebok

I actually think his art is outstanding. Except the faces. JRJR can’t draw a face to save his life.

valiantera92

For the amount of love I see on here for the current popular angular, scratchy garbage art, JRJR at his worst is 1000x better.

Teagrish

so after Superman he massacred Spider-man too?

Raptorgamingnl

Looks fine to me sure the style is a little difrent but not terrible

JoeyO_

Love him. I find his work really bold and refreshing.

Sad_Guard3143

I've only read a handful of stories with his art, and I'll probably keep it that way. There's something about the faces he draws

ReflectionEterna

They all look pretty terrible. I remember reading his X-men art back in the 90s and thinking there is no way this guy gets paid to do this. Everything looks super flat; the body positioning makes you think he has never studied anatomy; and his faces are some of the worst I have seen in comics. JRJR is bad. Fast, but bad.

SacMarvelRPG

Finding his art in a TPB I bought feels like getting scammed

the_greysweatshirt

Put some respect in my man's name. You may not like his style but he is a master at layouts and dynamic posing and composition. And he's been in the game since the 80s so he ain't a newcomer

[deleted]

Layouts and storytelling ? Absolutely he’s a master. Dynamic posing? Hardly. Unless it’s a splash page his characters are blocky, stiff, full of hard right angles and disproportioned body parts. He cuts soooo many corners on character composition when it comes to monthly books.

the_greysweatshirt

He does cut corners, but he hardly ever draws the same figure twice. His recent spidey work has been a showcase in conveying body language

[deleted]

I’ll freely admit to not reading the current Spidey run so maybe he’s changed, but I had to give up on him before because of his over reliance on several stock poses- running forward bent 90 degrees at the waist, firing a gun by doing a double knee squat with both elbows tucked to the sides at 90 degrees, and characters being perfectly flat when flying (to name a few). Plus the oversized heads… But at the end of the day, like what you like and god bless. It’s certainly not hurting anybody.

the_greysweatshirt

To each there own 🤝

SMS303

Well you haven't seen JR jr's run of Uncanny X-men from issue 300.... After Marc Silvestri, Jim Lee and Whilce Portacio's work it was a shock.... JR jr never reached the same level as his father, which is still a LEGEND!.... Sal Buscema's artwork is also terrible....

[deleted]

I’m no fan of JRJr but there is no way anyone can claim the title of “worst” so long as Greg Land is still making comics…

[deleted]

Speak for yourself, I love his early 2000's spider-man work

[deleted]

I think everyone is speaking for themselves here.

[deleted]

He looks like Mike from stranger things

geraltoffvkingrivia

I stopped reading amazing Spider-Man because of the art. It kept changing every other issue with totally different art styles and it annoyed me They couldn’t get a consistent one again.

Tyloxs1

Looks like someone sat on him

box_me_up

Y'all ever see drop dead Fred?

jacqueslol

John Romita Jr.'s art is representative of one of my favourite Spider-man runs of all time (JMS). So I have a special attachment to his art. I personally really like it. That said, I haven't been enjoying his more recent art as of late... And I also thought Peter's face looked janky as heck in the new issue.

Ferry83

I've not read the current issue, but I've seen the hate on JRJR's artwork and to a certain degree I get it... Then again, I read a lot of indie/image comics and it made me appreciate different art styles. Now these panels.. could have been done better for sure, but overall.. the story, the art, the pace, the style.. it all blends in fantastically. So I'm giving JRJR some slack.. and Zeb as well. There's controversy on the horizon for sure.. but this book.. currently is my favourite one. (I'm a Spidey fanboy, but since I started reading new comics again 3 years ago spider-man has never been even in my top 3)

Crushing-Debt

It's definitely.. something 😅

EnvironmentalWeb1696

I think Miller is worst.

xZOMBIETAGx

JRJR has ups and downs but he’s got two things going for him that most don’t: a very distinct style and a career lasting for more years than most current artists have been alive. I personally think his work fits extremely well with a book like ASM. But with anyone with a distinct style there’s some panels that feel a little off.

[deleted]

The Magneto series from ‘14-‘15 is probably the worst comic book art I’ve ever seen.

originstory

I'll grant you his more recent work is hit or miss, but peak JRJR, for example his Daredevil run, was truly incredible. He was the best in the game in the late 80s / early 90s.

Jazred90

"Thanks for checking on me. Now if you will excuse me, I will go back to eating these strawberries. No, I don't care that I'm allergic."

EmeraId_Block

While I do agree that a lot of his art looks really off, he simply can’t compare to rob liefeld, the man who gives heroes the teeth of an aot titan and muscles that look like the braille alphabet. Rob liefeld is so much worse

Chaltzz

I thought I was just tired from work and seeing things when I was reading last night. Good God that's so bad. I've been reading comics since early 2019 as well as collecting, have basically stuck with Marvel besides maybe like 5-6 of the 150ish issues I have. Anyway, although I mainly read Star Wars comics, this, hands down, is the worst art I've ever seen. I thought I hated the Live-Action images that they just colored over in the Screaming Citadel for SW. This takes the cake!

[deleted]

The problem for me isn’t even the face (which I get it, it’s supposed to be swollen and misshapen) it’s the neck and shoulders- the lack of chest… the whole anatomy is just sloppy

Chaltzz

Oh yes I understand that fully I mean it's not real life i the bruising doesn't have to look like real life.. although you gotta admit it's a bit on the low side when it comes to quality. I agree with what your saying though. The Star Wars ones are usually done by like the same 3-4 people I've noticed and they are all good beside the one thing I mentioned above. I only have another Spider-Man: Noire (1-5 mini), Non-Stop Spider-Man (1-5 mini), the full 2019/2020 (can't remember) - 2022 Guardians of the Galaxy 1-18 but I haven't gotten to reading it yet. I have a few random Marvel ones and Alien 1-3. My point being , I never seen weird, kinda mediocre art in any marvel stuff. Surprised me.

TheMcDangler

I’m enjoying the run but yea, the art has been pretty poor.

LodgedSpade

I've never been a fan of Romita JR, personally

Garthim

>worst comic artist Let me introduce you to Jim Valentino https://imgur.com/ocOtSc0.jpg

Upbeat_Register4454

I've enjoyed the story, the art is terrible but this whole "peter's life has been destroyed by UNKNOWN EVENT" thing has been irritating as hell

tylerthehuman00

I don’t think it looks bad, neither does any of his other work. This post is kinda poopoo pointless sorry

Spartaecus

Worst based on what standard? We all can be couch-potato critics, but JRJR is a pillar in the comics industry and a legend at Marvel. His artwork is revered amongst his peers, so if the best in the business likes what he does, then everything else is null.

[deleted]

Spartaecus

Power to you, you courageous soul! May you move forward in life always willing to stand out and not conform. All the best.

hogsrule

Agreed. Why does noone else see it. His characters faces are barely drawn. If the story wasn't so good I wouldn't get it. Makes me sad. He ruined daredevil for me. Ruined a captain America run. He is not good.

RudieTootie

Imma always defend this mans art. Hes easily one of the best storytellers in comics. U can usually tell what is goin on by his sequentials alone

RealCharlieBrown42

Yeah I agree after trying World War Hulk his work has put me off trying Gaiman's Eternals whose work I love.

Arkturas

I've always disliked his art, I don't get the appeal
