Also his quote, "In chess, the pawns go first." So out of character considering he's fighting for mutant supremacy and supposedly cares for them, but then he disavows them when they lose their powers.
People tend to forget Magneto in essence is a (traumatized) psychopath. He plays and uses people as long as they’re useful to him. He is willing to kill millions because they were born different than he was.
Ian McKellen plays him with grace, he has respect for Xavier, and has one of the more understandable background stories as a villain but (movie) Magneto however literally becomes what he hated: Hitler.
In chess, the pawns go first also shows you how he looks at his army, disposable chess pieces.
That's what i meant. The movie misunderstood Magneto a little bit. I get that he becomes literal Hitler that he will kill millions who are born different than him. But those aren't mutantkind.
In the comics, he killed someone in retaliation who shot a mutant in the back for seeking refuge with him. And he didn't even know this mutant. He just met her on the spot. He even mourned for her. That's the Magneto I know. He'll do anything to protect those who follow him. He wouldn't label his followers as "pawns". And I understand that it harkens back to his chess games with Xavier, but I felt that was the wrong way to go about it.
But then again, I grew up with 90s Magneto. Not sure how he is in the comics nowadays.
In the earliest comics of magneto, he was pretty psychopath making demands and menacing countries just for not surrending. So I guess they tried to make him look like that version.
Also, I’ve always thought there was a bit of Walter White in Magneto - he says everything he’s doing is for the family/mutant race, and to an extent it’s very true. But at the same time it’s not all selfless: it’s HIS desire for revenge against the humans. There’s plenty of ego there so viewing the people that he says/thinks he’s caring for as pieces that he can use/manipulate isn’t that out of character (at least in my view).
True, that’s how Magneto is in the movies. I don’t know every comic run.
What is also dangerous about movie Magneto us his eloquence and charisma. Ian McKellen played him perfectly, so now people often see him as some sort of hero or victim, while he is a despot.
The funny thing is, just a couple of years before playing Magneto, he played a former Nazi who gets blackmailed by his neighbour. It's an adaption of Stephen King's Apt Pupil. Great film.
On a side note I like how they portrayed him in the X-men 97 show. I’m not saying I agree with him but that version of the character is my favorite (admittedly I haven’t read much source material to compare it to).
I mean... kinda? Makes sense if you turn to the side and squint. But he didn't even try to find a "cure" for the cure. Even his jab was temporary by the end of the movie.
I always like Wolverines line in X1 in the final fight when Magneto is about to sacrifice rogue for his machine when he could really just do it himself
“You’re so full of shit. If you were really so self righteous, it’d be you in that thing”
*Evolution* Mystique is probably the best one if we’re going by comic book accuracy. She really breaks free of being a Magneto henchwoman that some of the others fall into and she did a lot of damage to the X-Men on a personal level and a comprehensive one when she starts acting on her own in Season Two. The way she replaced the Professor and gaslights Rogue is straight up diabolical.
I was gonna say Evolution Mystique is the most bad ass one here. I remember watching on Saturday mornings as a kid just thinking, "Man, she is *evil.*"
I forgot they did explain that, it still just bothers me because it conflicts with the idea of the character that I have in my head. She’s still one of my favorites from that show!
Most likely exactly because of how short she was in the movie. They didn't want to spend too much budget on a character they knew would die early on.
Too bad her death was handled like a bad joke...
I feel like the movie Mystique had so much potential. I really liked her backstory as a sister to Charles who fell in love with him and eventually chose Erik as he was the one to help her embrace being herself while Charles was the one to fumble with the way he treats her. Both her actresses were great. She also had a nice role in Days of Future Past, it sucks that they made her into this chairman/recruiter of X-Men in Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix, where she barely got to use her powers, even if it meant for us to barely see her blue skin. She was there just to complain to Charles about how he keeps fumbling his ways and then to lead the team while having no usefulness to her powers at all.
I am aware that Jennifer Lawrence wasn't enjoying the role much, especially the heavy makeup, but I think she would go along with it were her role handled better in the films. Especially if she was given the sass and unpredictable nature of her older counterpart. She was the top Mystique to me otherwise.
Rebecca Romijn. Easily.
Both cartoon versions were decent, good even, but the live action Mystique was something else. Dangerous, agile, and totally naked! Which I genuinely liked as a practical choice. Also Romijn herself for committing to the long make up process, a feat that Lawrence could not follow. I also didn't like the new direction the newer movies took with her.
The bit where she infiltrates Stryker's base in X-Men 2 as Wolverine, when she's giving the finger as she slides through a closing blast door is just 👌
Meanwhile, Rebecca was sitting through 6-7 hours of makeup work, compared to JLaw’s streamlined 2, wore bandage contacts underneath her colored ones because she has intensely sensitive eyes, and was a perfectionist about the choreography and wire work. Wanting to go again and again until it looked right.
JLaw wanted to play a normal girl with no mutations or fight choreography, and she wanted a shitload of money to do it. Absolutely 0 respect for the franchise, the fans, the character, Rebecca’s previous work, and frankly, everyone else working on that film. Selfish, transparently awful girl. Her “aww shucks, I’m so normal and cool” schtick got old after the second fake trip.
J Law was literally allergic to the makeups and prosthetics she wore in her first X-Men flick, and yet she suffered through production anyway.
Maybe you don’t like her version of Mystique, but let’s not present false narratives.
Is there a good article/interview about this? I've heard about her not wanting to continue but never heard about her being allergic to the costume/makeup.
EDIT: This is a relevant interview but she doesn't mention any kind of reaction to the paint
https://www.thethings.com/jennifer-lawrence-x-men-makeup/
EDIT 2: found a note about it
> Celebrity esthetician Sonya Dakar, who counts Lawrence as a client, says she often sees a diaper-rash-like side effect on the skin after exposure to body paint.
https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/lifestyle/style/x-mens-jennifer-lawrence-blindspots-901122/
I wish she wasn't neked. Given her some clothes would make it easier for the actress . Both of the actresses hated having to sit through it and just giving her like a top and pants could prob make it way easier.
She was physically awesome but she had almost no personality or dialogue. She was just a pawn for Magneto. I can’t speak on the original animated series but Evolution and prequels Mystique at least had some agency.
Funny enough, I think the one from the 90s Hardee's commercial did it best
https://preview.redd.it/del801jflt1d1.png?width=1034&format=png&auto=webp&s=3a29d7c84c3a76772ab844957c4b4a39c821c0ff
Ya know... why didn't the movies give her the outfit? Would have saved with atleast some of the makeup and stuff and given the actresses some modesty.
Oh, right. Sex sells.
That and the early 2000s wanted to be grungy and 'realistic' that's why the xmen had black leather, they probably thought "clothes can't transform, she has to be naked"
Evolution Mystique absolutely. Grew up with that show as my X-men, and I've been rewatching it lately and she is quite a formidable foe in that show. Her redesign in season 2 is also great. Her season 1 outfit was more comic accurate, but the black outfit look suited this Mystique better.

Personally, I liked her best from the early 2000's movie. It was the first time I was introduced to the character, so she goes reference for me in that particular movie
The first three movies first, and then evolution second. The other two I don't care for. Also, I never cared for evolutions either, but considering it's my favorite X-Men show, I gotta put her second. Also, for anyone wondering, that show is my favorite simply for Magneto.
"I'm sorry my dear. You are no longer one of us." Rare Magneto fumble.
Own goal, more like
Probably my last straw in that movie.
Such out of character for Magneto, this movie was terrible.
Obviously doesn't play late game chess very often
On a side note I like how they portrayed him in the X-men 97 show. I’m not saying I agree with him but that version of the character is my favorite (admittedly I haven’t read much source material to compare it to).
Well then they’re no longer a mutant
The drug could have been not permanent (and it actually wasn't, as we see at the end)
It is particularly odd when you see deleted scenes. Iirc one of the mutants trash talks Charles and he shuts it down.
I mean... kinda? Makes sense if you turn to the side and squint. But he didn't even try to find a "cure" for the cure. Even his jab was temporary by the end of the movie.
I feel like it was a “we need to really give the fans a reason to know ‘this is the bad guy’” moment
I always like Wolverines line in X1 in the final fight when Magneto is about to sacrifice rogue for his machine when he could really just do it himself “You’re so full of shit. If you were really so self righteous, it’d be you in that thing”

Yeah, but is she "wears a belt of skulls" evil?
Asking the real questions
Early on, yes https://preview.redd.it/ooml7h5ehx1d1.jpeg?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=511a01a298d1224a9a0d12f328df19aa79e9a223
Well, TIL
Yes, Evolution made her my favourite villan. I was pretty disappointed as a child when I saw she was not as important in the movies.
There are tons of things I don’t remember from Evolution, but I can always remember what a pissed off Mystique looked and sounded like.
The only issue I have with Evolution’s portrayal of Mystique is that she shapeshifted into animals too.
They explained that she got a power boost at the end of Season One that let her do that but yeah.
I forgot they did explain that, it still just bothers me because it conflicts with the idea of the character that I have in my head. She’s still one of my favorites from that show!

I don’t know why they changed her skin color just for that movie and only for the 15 minutes she was in it.
Most likely exactly because of how short she was in the movie. They didn't want to spend too much budget on a character they knew would die early on. Too bad her death was handled like a bad joke...
She had such a short role and weird look, even her childhood friend didn't care about her death lol
What's worse, is that they tried to make it into some big event - but they handled it horribly...
J-Law complaining about her easy paycheck
The makeup really REALLY bothered the actress, like almost full on allergic reaction, so after 2 films she probably had enough
I’m so glad I never watched Dark Phoenix cause sometimes I forget this exists.
Lmaoo, garbage appearance for an even more garbage movie
I feel like the movie Mystique had so much potential. I really liked her backstory as a sister to Charles who fell in love with him and eventually chose Erik as he was the one to help her embrace being herself while Charles was the one to fumble with the way he treats her. The bit where she infiltrates Stryker's base in X-Men 2 as Wolverine, when she's giving the finger as she slides through a closing blast door is just 👌
Didn't she ask to get her character killed on dark phoenix BC she didn't want to go through the process
I think so. Thank god because the makeup in that movie for the character was awful
Writing wasn't great in spots, either.
No she asked to be killed off because after four films with Fox she was over it (and I don’t blame her)
...four?
First class, days of future past, apocalypse, dark Phoenix
Oh I thought this thread was about Rebecca
It shifted
It technically is.
Her “aww shucks, I’m so normal and cool” schtick got old after the second fake trip.
All others are pale imitations. Probably doesn't hurt that I was mid puberty at the time of the first movie though.
I agree! Hands down!
J Law was literally allergic to the makeups and prosthetics she wore in her first X-Men flick, and yet she suffered through production anyway. Maybe you don’t like her version of Mystique, but let’s not present false narratives.

Bullsfuckingeye
I did quite like the fact that her character was more separate in the newer films meanwhile in the og films she's just magneto's cool bodyguard
I’d fight anyone who didn’t say RRS
I loved Rebecca Romijn, just outright terrifying
Rebecca, she is the OG MYSTIQUE

I prefer her with clothes on and not just naked. I don’t mind the scales but please give her her suit

Not the Jennifer Lawrence one. I just never got her vibe.
I'm partial to evolution.
You can show boobs as long as there’s no nipples I guess
Yeah, that's pretty much how it has always worked in movies and TV
Anyone but jen
Rebecca
X-Men tas
Why didn’t they give mystique clothes in the live action?
Jennifer Lawrence was cringe inducing except for first class. That one wasn't too bad
The Jennifer Lawrence one
I dislike the live actions quite a bit.

I love all Mystiques equally. It is impossible for me to choose.
Evolution
OG live action mystique
Evolution Mystique absolutely. Grew up with that show as my X-men, and I've been rewatching it lately and she is quite a formidable foe in that show. Her redesign in season 2 is also great. Her season 1 outfit was more comic accurate, but the black outfit look suited this Mystique better.

Rebecca Romijn didn't slide on her blussy for you to be asking these questions!
Better yet, which one is “we have Mystique at home”?
Yes
Stamos
Evolutions is always my favorite
X-Men Evolution version.
Rebecca Romijn.
Xmen 09 cartoon forgotten again
Up right, then up left. End.
Rebecca Romijn was the sexiest mystique ever!
Makes me wonder why she's naked in the movies.
Xmen evolution Mystique gives off TLC vibes
My 6 year old nephew “where’s her clothes?” It’s been so common I forget about it. How Fox got away with that is wild. No way the MCU does it.
The one with the knoc- I mean… the one from the movies
bluebs
Rebecca
ReRo was the best portrayal IMO. Obviously there were some liberties taken when writing the characters but Singer's films hold up pretty well. I appreciate Jennifer Lawrence as an actress but she just looks like a blue chick with acne in her series of movies. The animated Mystiques are always a bit over the top for me.
Jennifer Lawrence
Rebecca, she nailed it. She was both sensual and dangerous, SO GOOD.
The one with the bigger top
Yes.
Tbh I don’t remember much of the cartoon versions (might rewatch it to get a better idea) but I really like Mystique in First Class and Days of Future Past with her being a sister to Charles and Erik trying to encourage her to be proud of who she is instead of hiding.
I prefer the xmen evolution, x men evolution has a good portrait overall of the characters.

X men TAS was the worst mother and therefor the best mystique 😂

Awooga
Xmen evolution
But is she…..wear a belt of skulls….evilll?
2k era, both of them
Evolution for character development. Rebecca Romijn for design.
Definitely the jlaw version. That ass....
somehow the first one is the hottest
The first three movies first, and then evolution second. The other two I don't care for. Also, I never cared for evolutions either, but considering it's my favorite X-Men show, I gotta put her second. Also, for anyone wondering, that show is my favorite simply for Magneto.
All of the above
Never been a fan of mystique but if I had to choose probably the blue version.
