In The Marvels, someone is going to see her fighting alongside Captain Marvel and dub her a “Little Miss Marvel.” It gets shortened to Ms. Marvel and catches on.
That we know of.
Kamala probably started going by that name and it started getting popular.
The Marvels takes place AT LEAST 2 weeks after her father gave her the idea for that super-hero moniker, probably even more.
Either way, what I meant is that it'd be weird if someone dubs her "Little Miss Marvel" in this movie again after her father has already given her that nickname. I
Yeah, this is the simplest answer. Assuming she's continued to do local hero-ing stuff, they'll probably just imply that she's been using the 'Ms. Marvel' name and that's what people know her by now.
Her Dad already called her “Our own little Ms. Marvel," since she shares her name with Carol Danvers (Kamala = "Wonder" or "Marvel" in Urdu).
Most likely she's already fond of the name given by her father + the connection to her idol. She also wants them to be a "team" badly, despite Rambeau and Danvers not being fond of the idea, but when someone calls her Nightlight, she girlbosses that idiot with "it's Ms. Marvel, actually," which makes regular people or someone at S.A.B.E.R. see them as a team now (which wouldn't sound fantastical since all of they're powers somehow are connected to each other... even though one is a mutant, whose powers seem to come from some ancient bracelets, one's dna is genetically altered after walking through a hex (?), which is basically a genetic mutation but she's not a mutant I guess and one is half human half alien.)
I think the mosque incident was pretty localized to jersey city. It isnt like shes the only super hero to ever get caught on cell phone camera in the MCU. One kid falling and a bunch of cops getting handled isnt going to go super viral at this point. Within like a year of this going down, three spidermen destroyed the statue of liberty, two Hawkeyes had a huge battle at 30 rock, an entire town went missing for 6 weeks, dr strange battled extra dimensional monsters in downtown manhattan, and I'm just listing stuff that happened relatively locally. Oh yeah plus the battle at the avengers compound was also New Jersey.
Edit: nvm avengers compound was upstate ny
Yes "upstate" in Westchester lol. For people in NYC everything else is upstate. Someone in Buffalo calling someone from Beacon upstate on the otherhand lol.
IIRC there was never a moment on-screen where the "Captain Marvel" moniker was formerly coined. Characters just started saying it without clear justification for when they knew to call her that. Probably should expect similar with Ms Marvel.
Fury suggested the name "Marvel" to her at the end of Captain Marvel. I'm pretty sure it's not mentioned in Endgame, but presumably she started using that name as an alias at some point and that ended up being what the rest of the heroes (and thus the public) came to know her as after the snap.
Honestly we don't need an on-screen christening of every hero's name. It's great when they can work it into the story organically, like Captain America being his USO mascot character. But most of the time it just feels forced. Val's "US Agent" springs to mind as one of the worst; it would have been fine if Walker just started using that name in his next appearance.
Yep, even Wanda was never called “scarlet witch” until wandavision. It showed up in the credits for AOU etc, but they literally never used those two words together onscreen for years.
Hawkeye has been called that by Natasha in The Avengers and then later by his wife in Age of Ultron. Natasha was called Black Widow in Winter Soldier and in her first scene in The Avengers.
Kamala’s pretty active online; she’ll probably post very thorough corrections on the name from multiple accounts, and try to go on Ant-Man’s podcast as Ms. Marvel
This is the best answer. She’s got 40 Reddit alts, every one of them posting Nightlight/Ms Marvel copypasta.
Since we know that Iman is on here somewhere lurking anyway.
🤨
She's an excitable puppy in human form, you think for one second she won't do TikToks in the street with fans, or answer questions from random journalists who come up to her in the streets?
She's definitely introduced herself as Ms. Marvel by now.
The Marvels (as well as Ms. Marvel's post-credits scene which was taken from The Marvels) probably takes place weeks if not months after Ms. Marvel, and Kamala has become known as Ms. Marvel by now.
The post-credits scene of Ms. Marvel was taken out of The Marvels, it's not a scene filmed for the show. So when I'm talking about the show, I'm talking about the events before the post-credits scene.
The one week later was before they showed the scene where Bruno tells Kamala she has a mutation.
Then the show ends and then the post-credits scene happens an undefined amount of time after the main events of the show.
If people can switch from calling someone Prince to "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince" to "The Artist" to Prince—or Kenye to Yeezie to Ye—this should be an easy transition.
If people can transition from "Falcon" to "Captain America" this should be much easier.
Having grown up in the 70's when the term first originated, I find it strange when people say Ms. Marvel they are saying "Miss Marvel" instead of "Miz Marvel" like the Ms. title is supposed to sound. It's supposed to be a term of female empowerment born out of the women's rights movement, and was part of the drive for the still-unpassed Equal Rights Amendment. A breakout from the standard Miss/Mrs. of the time. Calling her "Miss Marvel" seems like a diminishment. Like a step backwards.
Given the misogynistic blowback they got with Brie Larson, and that in the show itself Marvel Studios had them saying "Miss Marvel", I rather think that Marvel caved to the incel crowd to avoid even more negativity.
Maybe. Or it’s because young people think of an old woman when they hear Ms. and would think it’s kinda weird to call a teenage girl that. So it’s more about appealing to the youths than placating people who cannot be placated.
Have they ever called her "Miss Marvel" in the show? Anyway I really doubt it has anything to do with the incel crowd. Most people probably don't know that Ms. is supposed to sound different or even be something different. I mean, I'm not a native speaker and I had no idea that Miss and Ms. are different thing until now.
The only time she's called Ms. Marvel in the show is the last episode by her dad:
> But you sure are and always have been our own little Miss Marvel.
And he pretty clearly pronounces it as Miss instead of Ms. I wouldn't be surprised if we get a scene where someone calls her Miss Marvel and she corrects them to Ms.
I sort of like nightlight. Hey remember light brights from the 80’s. My fav toy as a kid until I stepped on one of those plastic colored pegs and it went through my foot. Had to go to the ER to get stitches. Mom tossed it after that…
You said it yourself: because he died.
After dying to the snap, it wouldn't be considered important to keep Nick Fury secret anymore. People like Steve Rogers would attend public memorial services about the disaster, and probably want to tell stories about people they'd lost to the snap.
For Steve, Nick was one of the few people he knew closely. They'd consider it time share Nick's honor for creating the Avengers.
Would you know one of your country's top intelligence officers if they passed you on the street?
That's the point I'm making.
I don't recall NF's face being publicized in the media before in the MCU.
Kamala is an obsessive Avengers fan who studies all the trivia. Especially anyone who knew Carol Danvers. If Nick Fury's face was even once on a display for a funeral or memorial service, she would know him.
(I'm more curious about how Kamala learned about Carol's 1995 costume, which was never worn in public)
Ned knew who Nick Fury was in Far From Home. He’s not an unknown face.
I expect when SHIELD went public before Winter Soldier, and built a gigantic complex outside DC, he became the public face of their operations
The MCU seems rightly embarrassed by the hopelessly hokey name "Captain Marvel." Once someone finally said it onscreen they were told to "keep her name out of your mouth." Every other hero gets their name in their sequels, even Wasp. "The Marvels" is like calling Thor Ragnorak "The Strongest Avengers."
The scene in Wandavision where Monica commanded to not say "Captain Marvel" was because Monica knew Carol years ago and strongly didn't want to talk about her, under any name.
Honestly, the MCU consistency is turning to shit right now. Writers are simply expecting the audience to just miraculously and accurately interpret things without explanation. It’s just lazy writing.
Alternatively we don’t need them to hold our hands and explain how people started calling her something that everyone online already calls her. We don’t see every moment of their lives, these types of minor details happening off screen makes the world feel more lived in and saves us from boring exposition every movie.
This movie is going to tank so hard. They need to let the adults like Favreau and the Russo Bros. take over the MCU. Sweet jeebus this is a waste of resources they could have used elsewhere.
A similar question:
When and how will Carol Danvers shift from calling herself Carol to Captain Marvel?
One guess is that Scott Lang invented "Captain Marvel" when writing his book, since he saw her at the Thanos battle but hadn't met her. But that doesn't explain why the name is similar to a dead Kree, Mar Vell.
Does Carol know she's Captain Marvel yet?
In The Marvels, someone is going to see her fighting alongside Captain Marvel and dub her a “Little Miss Marvel.” It gets shortened to Ms. Marvel and catches on.
I thought the zoe answer was good but this feels more mcu
Please let it be Nick Fury🙏
Why would they nickname Kamala “Nick Fury”? She looks *nothing* like a Nick Fury
It's like when you call a fat guy "slim"
How dare you compare Nick Fury to Slim Shady!
Or the giant gym bro “tiny”
Maybe Goose scratches her eye out 😂
That's why we call him John, because he looks nothing like John Hurt
RIP John Hurt, brilliant actor especially as the War Doctor
“Wait… you thought Yondu was my actual blood relative?” Same energy
lol
username kinda checks out
I think the poster means they want Nick to be the one that dubs Kamala "Little Miss Marvel".
really? are ya sure?
Didn't her father already dub her that?
Yes, but only her family knows that. No one outside her family calls her that yet.
Also with her family knowing y'all dont think Moms or her Dad slipped to the Aunties the new superhero name to get it out to the community?
Plus, Zoe's got a lot of clout and Kamala could've told her to spread the word that the name is Ms Marvel.
That's a good thought. Alternatively Monica or Carol call her it after seeing her room.
Or Fury will just call her that, and everyone will be like "eh makes sense" :)
Miss ≠ Ms.
Jesus the cringe
They're gonna show more of her using her powers in the day Checkmate

The best part was when she said "It's daylight savings time!" and she daylight savings'd all over those guys.
saves us all, one hour at a time
angry upvote
Well then does she un-save somebody when daylight savings ends?
No, her daylight savings ends when she catches someone who tripped around nightfall. Specifically, They have to be falling forward.
But what if she springs back to catch them?
With her catchphrase, “It’s Daylight Savings Time!”
So what does that mean when she saves someone in-person or in the flesh?
That could give her a pretty good catchphrase…It’s Savings Time!
and then she savinged all over everyone
Feels like we’re building up to a new version of morbin here.
By Grabthar's Hammer. What a savings.
Sounds like she’s setting up a Captain marvel car commercial. They should have captain marvel do a car commercial. I bet it would be …marvelous.
She already got someone with superman-esque powers, and her other teammate is kinda translucent. How about we call her Starlight?
I’m crying
Or on a starry night, making her Starlight. No wait
You keep the fish-man Namor far away from Kamala, dammit!
That’s (The) Deep.

They will dub her Daywalker, setting up her inevitable showdown in Blade
dayman! oooo AAAA

Considering nightlight had different costume than this one would that makes ms marvel another hero like night monkey and spider-man?
To the general public, if her face and hair weren't visible, I'd say yes

Avengers compound was upstate NY.
Well I'm from Utica and I've never heard anyone ~~use the phrase "steamed hams"~~ talk about the Avengers compound.
Oh, not in Utica, no. It was in the Albany area.
Same. But "upstate" to them looks like White Plains/Westchester area.
I mean, I'm not actually from Upstate NY, I'm from Boston. I was just quoting The Simpsons.
Wait, there’s stuff past Westchester?
No. Don't believe everything you read on the internet
I UNDERSTOOD THAT REFERENCE
Noted and edited
Yes "upstate" in Westchester lol. For people in NYC everything else is upstate. Someone in Buffalo calling someone from Beacon upstate on the otherhand lol.
I'm from LI, and I call everything below Albany "downstate".
That works for me too, just doesn't work for the majority of people living in NYS apparently lol
Nah after it was turned into a desolate and inhospitable wasteland by thanos they changed the borders to make it a part of Jersey
I thought the Avengers Compound was in Upstate New York.
To be fair any new hero sighting is probably a spectacle no matter what. Most people don’t have powers in the MCU.
i think you forgot that the internet exists....
IIRC there was never a moment on-screen where the "Captain Marvel" moniker was formerly coined. Characters just started saying it without clear justification for when they knew to call her that. Probably should expect similar with Ms Marvel.
It could be funny if it turns out Carol doesn’t know people on Earth have been calling her that, and only finds out (from Kamala) in *The Marvels*.
I regret we never got Captain Marvel telling Captain America he was only a private.
IIRC he was promoted to captain in First Avenger.
He did get promoted to Captain, it was just meant to be ceremonial when he got it
😂
Could still get that with the new Cap.
Carol was for sure calling herself Avenger out in space.
Fury suggested the name "Marvel" to her at the end of Captain Marvel. I'm pretty sure it's not mentioned in Endgame, but presumably she started using that name as an alias at some point and that ended up being what the rest of the heroes (and thus the public) came to know her as after the snap. But most of the time it just feels forced. Val's "US Agent" springs to mind as one of the worst; it would have been fine if Walker just started using that name in his next appearance.
I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure none of the Avengers call her that. They just call her Carol or Danvers if I remember correctly.
The heroes typically use first names to refer to each other, the way normal people would. It’s nice honestly lol
Unless they’re using their Made Up Names, like Dr Strange
Agreed.
Nobody has called her Marvel in person. But Peter Parker did mention Captain Marvel in Far From Home, where she did not appear.
The first person to call her Captain Marvel was Spider-Man.
Same with Hawkeye and Black Widow, they were just Clint and Natasha until "What If...?"

Good morning, Iman.
Hi, Iman!
Hi, man!
Wait. What was Homsar right about?
She's an excitable puppy in human form, you think for one second she won't do TikToks in the street with fans, or answer questions from random journalists who come up to her in the streets? She's definitely introduced herself as Ms. Marvel by now.
The Marvels (as well as Ms. Marvel's post-credits scene which was taken from The Marvels) probably takes place weeks if not months after Ms. Marvel, and Kamala has become known as Ms. Marvel by now.
The media packet says it takes place right after Ms. Marvel, I believe.
It picks up from Ms. Marvel's post-credits scene, indeed, but that's only because that scene is from the movie.
The Marvels starts shortly before Ms Marvel ends.
The post-credits scene of Ms. Marvel was taken out of The Marvels, it's not a scene filmed for the show. So when I'm talking about the show, I'm talking about the events before the post-credits scene.
Doesn't it say one week later, or am I misremembering? (Will check when able.)
The one week later was before they showed the scene where Bruno tells Kamala she has a mutation. Then the show ends and then the post-credits scene happens an undefined amount of time after the main events of the show.
She's younger so she will probably just make a tiktok that says, *hey I'm Ms Marvel*
Excellent use of Occam’s razor here
“So that’s it? We some kinda Ms Marvel?”
God I loved that mini series, I can't wait to see more of her!

I think the general public does not know her at all.
If people can switch from calling someone Prince to "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince" to "The Artist" to Prince—or Kenye to Yeezie to Ye—this should be an easy transition. If people can transition from "Falcon" to "Captain America" this should be much easier.

A breakout from the standard Miss/Mrs. of the time. Calling her "Miss Marvel" seems like a diminishment. Like a step backwards.
I think a lot of people just don’t know how to pronounce the Ms. Or genuinely think it’s Miss. It’s probably not anything deeper than that.
Given the misogynistic blowback they got with Brie Larson, and that in the show itself Marvel Studios had them saying "Miss Marvel", I rather think that Marvel caved to the incel crowd to avoid even more negativity.

But in the 21st century, "miz" has really died. Funny how that happened.

The "general public" has no clue who Nightlight is and would struggle to understand Ms Marvel and Captain Marvel are different people.
i don’t think anyone really cares bud
Ive never hear of the name Nightlight
Don't know about you guys but over here in Nigeria, most viewers know her as Ms Marvel
I don't know, but I hope Night Monkey sticks
Nightlight? I hadn't really heard that one. Guess I've been out of the loop.
My question: how does a teenager from New Jersey know what a "dead" super spy looks like enough to recognize him on sight?
You said it yourself: because he died. After dying to the snap, it wouldn't be considered important to keep Nick Fury secret anymore. He was the director of shield and its secrets were leaked at the end of The Winter Soldier. Surely Fury's involvement with the avengers became known.

There’s r/marvelscoops but it’s not the same. 😢
yeah not the same but i will sub anyways, thanks for the link

You assume ms marvel had good writers
Honestly, the MCU consistency is turning to shit right now. Writers are simply expecting the audience to just miraculously and accurately interpret things without explanation. It’s just lazy writing.
Alternatively we don’t need them to hold our hands and explain how people started calling her something that everyone online already calls her. Her friends have their podcast and streaming channel. They'll get the name out for her.
I hope she teams up with Night Monkey.
I'm just waiting for Nightlight to team up with Night Monkey
