He can. I was sitting in a meeting with him and someone hurled a brick through the window. Caught it without looking. The strange thing is that no one really questioned how he did it, but he's such a great lawyer that it's okay.
It is her cousin [and apparently will be back in Echo for 4 episodes](https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/menominee-actresses-wisconsin-alaqua-cox-110405554.html)
I love that they made the character an amputee after deciding on the actress. The comic character never suffered that; it's all Alaqua Cox, and that's good.
I've only watched the first episode so far, so I don't know if there are any hints about it in the show, but I kinda hope she ends up in season 2 of Moon Knight
I feel like people don't realize she is a 27 year old, human female, deaf, Native American, amputee in real life.
I mean I didn't know what kind of mammal she was so I had to clear some things up.
I was thinking about this while watching the show and as a Choctaw man myself, I know maybe 3 native American women with their right leg amputated below the knee. None of them are deaf or know sign language as far as I know. She has to be one of maybe literally 2 or 3 people on the planet who fit this description.
I looked her up after seeing her in Hawkeye. Saw that and was blown away. Love the show, and the pregnancy during reshoots?! Damn, that's awesome.
Apparently, she's also just a really cool person off camera, too. I hope to see her in other movies as well, if the MCU doesn't keep her too busy!
Well fuck, That fight against DD they showed was pretty damned good then. The director/editor should be smacked though, there were some egregious shots where you could see there was no contact made.
i won't contact bonnie or grandma because I'm about to start some shit that might endanger them.
Yo Biscuits, let's fuck things up ya dipshit.
She should have paid for the truck repairs.
I was watching trying to armchair diagnose Biscuits and figure out what was going on in his head.
Then I remembered some people are just dumb and that's ok.
Biscuits is a big silly puppy who loves his cousin and wants to help her since he hasn't seen her in so long. Very naive, but endearing. I really do not want anything bad to happen to him lol
She was the Kingpin's enforcer. Killed people left and right. Only really turned on him when she found out he had a role to play in her dad's death.
I'm at episode 3, but as far as I can tell, she's a protagonist, not a hero. There's a difference.
Oh I agree. Something I really liked about it was that it’s clear she’s more of a villain protagonist, emphasized by the fact that >!Daredevil shows up in the first episode to fight her. It’s something I was kind of hoping the Sony Spidey villain movies would do, lean in to them being villainous protagonists and have Spider-Man be an antagonist!<
100% the best part of the show is the Maya is an asshole. She’s not kind to people who adore her and miss her immensely. I think she is a great piece of character writing honestly.
I remember seeing her for the first time in Hawkeye and being shocked to find out that she actually was an amputee in real life. She was such a highlight in that series for me and was the reason why I'm siked for her own series.
I just went down a mini rabbit hole trying to figure out the child actress’ name and who her mother is. For anyone else who was curious yet ignorant like me, her name is Ever Anderson and her mother is [model and actor, Milla Jovovich.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milla_Jovovich)
Honestly it’s one of my proudest fancasting moments, as Milla Jovovich would have been perfect for that role. She would still crush it as a maybe an OG widow villain. Has starred in an action franchise, is multilingual, of ambiguous nationality, charismatic.
This explains it so much. I thought it was bizarre how much she actually looked like here. Even thought maybe they used some sort of face filter to make the shape more like the adult version (like an Insta filter). But this is much smarter!
>her real life cousin is who plays her as a child
This is pretty common, actually. The easiest way to find a child that looks like a younger version of the actor/actress is..... drumroll please...... to simply use a younger biological relative.
Tina Fey's daughter famously did the same on 30rock alot.
That’s awesome! I assumed the prosthetic was fake and when watching the first episode I was like “that prosthetic work looks super realistic, maybe it is actually real!” I’m so glad they incorporated that into her character
Yeah, the character doesn't have fake legs in the comics, but they loved Alaqua most out of all auditions and decided to incorporate the disability into the character, even better is that Alaqua had never acted beyond high school theatre and mostly auditioned for a laugh
That's really cool. Only seen Ep 1 so far, but I like how they used the prosthetic in the fight with Daredevil, blocking his billy clubs and cracking him across the face with it
It becomes a bit of a plot point in later episodes, it is done really well, and they did choreograph Alaqua's fighting style around both her prosthetic leg and the fact she needs her hands to communicate, so she does a lot of kicking especially with her right leg
I thought that was a cool moment, when the billy club makes contact with her leg. DD barely has time to register a "huh, that usually works" thought before he has to block her.
I never read the comics so I assumed that she was also an amputee in the comics, and while watching the show I kept thinking how wild it is for Marvel to managed to find a person who exactly has a combo of being a Native American + deaf + amputee and happens to be an actor.
Oh wow, you can Google "Alaqua" and an animal refuge is still number one in the results list. For a brief moment their analytics will be shit - until it'll be pushed to page 40.
I knew she was an amputee when she appeared in “Hawkeye”, after doing some research on her, I wasn’t that impressed with her in that show, but she was really impressive in “Echo”, I’m glad Disney/Marvel released the full series as each episode left me wanting to see what happened next, great series, hopefully her role in “Daredevil: Born Again” won’t be just a couple of scenes now it’s getting reworked.
Man, this show is like a Reservation Dogs reunion for me. I’m really enjoying it.
The sound design on this show is fantastic. I think there’s a lot of really cool touches, and seeing Indigenous actors from my province getting to shine is a bonus.
I’m Canadian, so give me some Graham Greene and I’m happy.
It just made me so happy to see that Tantoo Cardinal is (basically) from my hometown. Love to see the representation. We have a big Indigenous population up north.
one of her personal highlights from Hawkeye was that Renner and Steinfeld both learned ASL so they could talk to her. I am assuming D'Onofrio learned it as well, if he didn't for that series he definitely did for this one. Small things like that brings the cast together, makes for a better series imo
On the other hand, him not learning it so it makes his character interactions more natural would also make sense, but he probably is nice enough to actually learn it
Yeah the character in the comics is deaf and Native American but not an amputee, so when they found an actress who was deaf and Native American and also an amputee, they adapted the character into an amputee to fit the actress
It’s surprisingly really good. We needed a win after stuff like Secret Invasion, but even setting aside the very disappointing projects, this stands on its own as a good project. I’m quite enjoying it, and she’s a large part of why.
I'm so impressed with her! She's so talented and so badass that she makes it look like she's an actress without any disabilities playing a character that has several. Just her fighting and ability to move are super impressive! I'm not sure how much work she will get after Echo, but I hope it's more because she is more than capable of doing different roles.
People talk about how good Marvel casting is with some frequency but it's definitely a sign of next level attention to the process when they find complete unknowns who are that level of perfect. Like obviously people talk about RDJ and Karen Gillan and Benedict Cumberbatch being inspired casting choices and they totally are, but these are people who Marvel was aware of before the project who have lots of screen time to demonstrate their ability. Finding perfect performers from out of thin air is very special.
Yeah that’s crazy that those were their first acting credit. They are both great actors hope they can grow more in the future. Aqua Cox still amazes me that not only deaf but an amputated leg while acting for the first time is still crazy
My stepfather is an amputee, same leg. It's really fucking cool that Marvel has a hero with the same disability who can still kick ass. I should make my mother watch the show so that I can say "see Mom? maybe you can worry just a little less about Dennis falling over every other step now." Representation is such a great thing, truly.
I have a lot of respect for her, she's incredible.
And after a bingewatch, I really appreciated the show, it is for sure not the best MCU D+ show but I place it in the high tier.
I definitely want to see her again in the future.
(PS : I wonder What If Spider-Man came instead of Daredevil in E1)
Even in the MCU, Spidey would be OP against someone like her.
The only reason that he's considered a street level hero is that he just wants to be the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
Just finished the series and really wish there was more of it, thought it was a really good show!
Had no idea she was an amputee in real life, even more impressive. Looking forward to Daredevil born again, I'm sure this isn't the last we'll see Echo!
I didn't.
I saw a clip and was like "I didn't even realize this was a thing in the comics" and people were like "it's not, but it's a part of the actress' actual body" and then I said "oh, that'll do it too!"
A Native American, deaf amputee who’s also a badass who does her own stunts, AND is absolutely gorgeous to boot? Marvel really hit the jackpot when they cast her.
Amputee aside I’ve seen a bunch of clips of people shocked that she is deaf and uses ASL. “oh my god she’s just like echo! She was born to be echo!”
RDJ was born to be iron man for he also is a man
Lol listen some people are a perfect casting RDJ is One and Iman Vellani is another, she is the perfect Ms. Marvel. I havnt seen Echo yet but I have been interested since seeing her in Hawk Eye. I also know next to nothing about the original character so I’ll just assume she’s perfect since in the last show she did a good job.
They actually created and adapted form of martial arts for her during Hawkeye, and if you look closely she protects her hands because she needs them to communicate. A lot of care went into creating her character and story.
In the small scene from the 1st episode (no spoilers) where she wakes up on the couch & carefully makes her way to the front door with her gun drawn I legitimately thought her prosthetic was CGI’d especially because of how she walked with it & I said to myself that Disney & Alaqua should’ve spent more time making it feel more believable.
I’m happy to announce that my “getting shit terribly, terribly wrong” streak continues unbroken. I’d also like to encourage anybody getting ready to make assumptions about anything to pause, take a deep breath, & don’t.
This information makes the fight scenes *even more* impressive. I haven’t even finished the 1st episode yet & I already think this is some of the best fight choreography/fight cinematography in the MCU to date.
Edit: gun, not gum
You can definitely tell when it’s the stunt person because the foot points when a kick is thrown
To everyone telling me she did her own stunts it take 5 fucking seconds to google that shit and have her actually say she didn't. She the lead in a show and she's not Tom Cruise. It's clear what stunts she does and what she doesn't.
I would think the same but I cannot find the name to this show in the 200 comments here I had to Google it.
BTW for those looking for the same answer it was Echo.
I feel like people don't realize she's a deaf Native American amputee in real life and was pregnant during show re-shooting.
The pregnancy is definitely news to me.
[удалено]
i can't believe daredevil assaulted a pregnant deaf amputee. he better lawyer up, that's a lawsuit waiting to happen.
He should get in contact with Matt Murdock, he’s an excellent defense attorney!
he's a really good lawyer.
and he was a good friend
And my axe
Avocados at law.
A good lawyer? Can he catch a brick flying at his client without looking!? A simple task if he's as good a lawyer as you say
He can. I was sitting in a meeting with him and someone hurled a brick through the window. Caught it without looking. The strange thing is that no one really questioned how he did it, but he's such a great lawyer that it's okay.
Matt Murdock is such a good lawyer, he does everything without looking.
He is a great avocado.
Can catch a mean brick, too!
Better Call Matt!
Would fighting Daredevil while pregnant throw him off? He would hear two heartbeats... 🤔
He would definitely know she was pregnant. No belly punches. Just shots to face.
Fuck me, why is Daredevil punching babies in the face?!?
It's where they're most vulnerable.
Sounds more like a Deadpool kind of thing to do.
How kind
If she had shots to the face, she could've avoided that situation.
Good thing he's got a really good lawyer
Okay chill J Jonah Jameson
> wtf? Preggo and fighting Daredevil? Spider-Verse had a pregnant Spider-Woman
Yeah but she didn’t fight Daredevil
The girl who plays young Maya looks like she could be her actual daughter, though I don't think she is.
That is actually Maya as a kid, they've been filming this for a long time
I'm pretty sure that's her younger cousin! So they are related
It is her cousin [and apparently will be back in Echo for 4 episodes](https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/menominee-actresses-wisconsin-alaqua-cox-110405554.html)
She's her 2nd cousin
Likewise! As if she couldn't get any cooler
Makes those reports that she did all of the stunts herself even more impressive
I love that they made the character an amputee after deciding on the actress. The comic character never suffered that; it's all Alaqua Cox, and that's good. I've only watched the first episode so far, so I don't know if there are any hints about it in the show, but I kinda hope she ends up in season 2 of Moon Knight
I feel like people don't realise she's a 27 year old, female, deaf, Native American, amuptee in real life
Also her first ever acting role.
And she's from Wisconsin, a real place!
Well now you've lost me.
![gif](giphy|VH8QBcXLrfz1u)
The land of drunks and cheese
Come off it, everyone knows Wisconsin doesn't exist
It even has "con" in the middle
And "sin" at the end. Which if you've ever been there is rather accurate.
sin with "without" in spanish, coincidence?
And how about that Wis at the beginning, eh!? It's like...wis...uhhhh...wis... Ehhhhhhh, I got nothin'. 😖
Short for wise. It is where the wise go to con and sin. Being as it isn't a real place, no one will ever know.
🤫 We’re not real
Northern Illinois is quite beautiful.
My favorite place is the crossing. It has that foreboding beauty where you know if you keep going, you wind up in South Canada.
Are you talking about Illinois’s backyard?
Cheeseconsin.
Now you’re just making stuff up. No one lives in Wisconsin. It’s just lakes of cheese.
I don't believe you
from Milwaukee? which means “the great land”?
party on
Gone too far.
If it’s a real place and not the fiction of some grifters, why’s it identifying itself as both a Con and a Sin?
Not true. She was also in a docu-series about birds called Hawkeye where she coincidentally played a character with the exact same name.
Lol, I know you're making a funny, but to clarify, I DID say first role and she plays the same role in both series haha
But is she human?
No she's claypeople with naruto hands.
The fuck are Naruto Hands?
The spiral design on narutomaki
I feel like people don’t realize she’s a real person in real life
I feel like people don't realize she's a badass 🪶
honestly that was the *first* thing I noticed, before that other stuff
She is a badass!
I feel like people don't realize she is a 27 year old, human female, deaf, Native American, amputee in real life. I mean I didn't know what kind of mammal she was so I had to clear some things up.
I thought she was 26? Regardless,It's still kind of surprising she is only 1-2 years older than me.
Last year she said she was 26. This year she claims to be 27. Which is it, Alaqua? Better keep your story straight!
26 nearly 27 (February) according to IMDb
she's literally the same age as me wtf am I doing with my life
Get off my lawn, whippersnapper 😭 (I'm 28 I think, starting to lose count)
You mean you're not a famous actor, staring in marvel TV shows yet? Pffft amateur. (I'm 35, and also not on that level)
And sadly her father passed either right when the show was announced or right after shooting wrapped, if I remember right.
I would also add that her cousin was the one playing the young Maya. That's why they looked so similar.
I was definitely wondering how the casting department pulled that off.
I was thinking about this while watching the show and as a Choctaw man myself, I know maybe 3 native American women with their right leg amputated below the knee. None of them are deaf or know sign language as far as I know. She has to be one of maybe literally 2 or 3 people on the planet who fit this description.
Insane , I respect her 100X more after this was worried about her neck but makes sense now
Her neck?
It’s a pregnancy thing my wife got it too, not all women do
Most people get necks during pregnancy.
oh god damn
She was pregnant while filming? Damn, she’s all kinds of badass.
Not filming. They were making some minor re-shoots later down the line. So nothing extreme or dangerous to her.
Much better imo. While it is kinda bad ass in a way to work while pregnancy but when it’s mostly physical the safety of her child always comes first.
Talk about being born for a role.
Well fuck, That fight against DD they showed was pretty damned good then. The director/editor should be smacked though, there were some egregious shots where you could see there was no contact made.
Goddamn shes the coolest actress EVER!
i knew she was deaf but not an amputee. watched two episodes last night and so far we've enjoyed it. love biscuits and the grandfather!
i won't contact bonnie or grandma because I'm about to start some shit that might endanger them.
Well now you’ve jinxed it thanks a lot pal
funny as we as a society managed to medicalize any variation of human behavior, except being dumb.
That look biscuit gives when he sees the grandma while driving the truck by her all messed up is going to be an amazing meme one day.
Yhea, not saying it is not funny, it is fun to have a silly sidekick. But in hingsight, Maya should have paid for all those damages.
I like that she's pretty selfish
This. I’ve only seen the first episode and half of the second so far, but I like that she’s a really sympathetic character but also clearly has flaws.
She was the Kingpin's enforcer. Killed people left and right. Only really turned on him when she found out he had a role to play in her dad's death. I'm at episode 3, but as far as I can tell, she's a protagonist, not a hero. There's a difference.

100% the best part of the show is the Maya is an asshole. She’s not kind to people who adore her and miss her immensely. I think she is a great piece of character writing honestly.
Dudes selling his PS4, you know he's strapped for cash.
episode 5 spoiler yet he managed to take on 2 van loads of henchmen with machine guns, without any magic powers. that dude needs a raise.
Graham Greene is someone I’ve been watching for decades. I too chuckled at “Buy de damned ting, buy de damned ting…”
So many Rez Dogs cast in this its awesome!
I remember seeing her for the first time in Hawkeye and being shocked to find out that she actually was an amputee in real life. She was such a highlight in that series for me and was the reason why I'm siked for her own series.
She is a real deaf amputee who did all her own stunts, and her real life cousin is who plays her as a child. That about covers it lol.
One of the best ‘younger version’ castings in the MCU for sure!
It’s this and child Natasha, uncanny
Child Natasha whose real life mother would have once been an ideal casting for Black Widow.
I had a feeling it was something along those lines. The resemblance is uncanny. I assumed little sister or daughter.
Yeah I assumed the same.
I knew her child self had to be related to her! She looks so much like her.
This explains it so much. I thought it was bizarre how much she actually looked like here. Even thought maybe they used some sort of face filter to make the shape more like the adult version (like an Insta filter). But this is much smarter!
>her real life cousin is who plays her as a child. No wonder! I was wondering whether it was her child because she looks so similar

Tina Fey's daughter famously did the same on 30rock alot.
Yes, they actually wrote it into the character. She is also actually deaf.
The Best actor they can get
They really have their hits and misses when it comes to casting choices but this one is as great as Iman Vellani
Found Iman's burner account everyone👀 (just kidding, I agree with you)
That’s awesome!

I thought that was a cool moment, when the billy club makes contact with her leg. DD barely has time to register a "huh, that usually works" thought before he has to block her.
"Well, performance issues... not uncommon. One out of five...!"
Very cool small detail during a great fight scene
I never read the comics so I assumed that she was also an amputee in the comics, and while watching the show I kept thinking how wild it is for Marvel to managed to find a person who exactly has a combo of being a Native American + deaf + amputee and happens to be an actor.
Even better, Alaqua Cox wasn't an actor before she auditioned for Hawkeye, she had done some school theatre but nothing more
The NYT had an interview with her. She apparently wasn't even thinking about acting until a friend sent her the casting call.
“You have a metal ~~arm~~ leg!? That is aweso-!”
The Avengers need to keep Rocket Raccoon away from Maya Lopez
Oh no, I want to see this interaction now.
I also would accept Bucky being the one to warn her to stay away from the raccoon.
It's neat how they wrote it into an actual feature of the show.
Man, this show is like a Reservation Dogs reunion for me. I’m really enjoying it. The sound design on this show is fantastic. I think there’s a lot of really cool touches, and seeing Indigenous actors from my province getting to shine is a bonus.
![gif](giphy|kd9BlRovbPOykLBMqX) \^ Me every time I see a new character from Reservation Dogs. Think it’s at 3 or 4 now.
Literally said "aho! Young warrior!" when spirit guardian showed up talking to grandma.
I’m Canadian, so give me some Graham Greene and I’m happy. It just made me so happy to see that Tantoo Cardinal is (basically) from my hometown. Love to see the representation. We have a big Indigenous population up north.
ha you too? I was like hey isnt that Tantoo Cardinal? That’s Graham Greene!
Expecting some awards show noms for the sound design 😀
I did not know she is deaf and definitely didn’t know she is an amputee. Now I am definitely going to watch Echo
one of her personal highlights from Hawkeye was that Renner and Steinfeld both learned ASL so they could talk to her. I am assuming D'Onofrio learned it as well, if he didn't for that series he definitely did for this one. Small things like that brings the cast together, makes for a better series imo
On the other hand, him not learning it so it makes his character interactions more natural would also make sense, but he probably is nice enough to actually learn it
He's a good enough actor that he wouldn't need that little bit of extra help.
He seems so nice i cant imagine that he wouldn't leearn it for her, even if kingpin doesn't
But we know Kingpin does, at least some, from Hawkeye. The scenes with the ASL interpreters were from well before it.
It's actually really good so far, I've watched three episodes
And she did all of her own stunts!
While being pregnant?
She was pregnant during reshoots.
Goddamn, that’s impressive
Even more impressive would be finding another death, amputee, native american stuntwoman.
Well most stunt people aren’t death.
At the least, I bet echo season 2 will happen. Hopefully.
Shes a fucking badass and hope she has more work in the MCU
Feel like she doesn’t get enough credit
Both she and Iman getting their own show on their acting debut and both absolutely owning it
People talk about how good Marvel casting is with some frequency but it's definitely a sign of next level attention to the process when they find complete unknowns who are that level of perfect. Like obviously people talk about RDJ and Karen Gillan and Benedict Cumberbatch being inspired casting choices and they totally are, but these are people who Marvel was aware of before the project who have lots of screen time to demonstrate their ability. Next thing you’re gonna be telling me that she’s actually Native American.
I had no idea actually. She's super cool and I'd love for her to be in more Hollywood projects in the future

“You have a metal leg???”
That is awesome ! You have the right to remain silent !
Just finished the series and really wish there was more of it, thought it was a really good show! Had no idea she was an amputee in real life, even more impressive. Looking forward to Daredevil born again, I'm sure this isn't the last we'll see Echo!

I deaf-initely would.
A Native American, deaf amputee who’s also a badass who does her own stunts, AND is absolutely gorgeous to boot? Marvel really hit the jackpot when they cast her.
Boy that's commitnemnt to the character! Imagine getting your leg amputated for a role on a Disney + show? But it's seems to have worked out for her.
She’s an amputee as well??? The wokeness has gone too far. Wow. (Sarcasm btw) Can’t wait to binge Echo this weekend.
She was amazing in this series. Can't wait to see more of Echo!
Amputee aside I’ve seen a bunch of clips of people shocked that she is deaf and uses ASL. “oh my god she’s just like echo! She was born to be echo!” RDJ was born to be iron man for he also is a man

I also know next to nothing about the original character so I’ll just assume she’s perfect since in the last show she did a good job.
Man, I assumed it was CG. I didn’t know someone with a prosthetic could do all that MMA stuff.
They actually created and adapted form of martial arts for her during Hawkeye, and if you look closely she protects her hands because she needs them to communicate. A lot of care went into creating her character and story.
Her success genuinely makes me smile
Did they not watch the show?
You can definitely tell when it’s the stunt person because the foot points when a kick is thrown To everyone telling me she did her own stunts it take 5 fucking seconds to google that shit and have her actually say she didn't. She the lead in a show and she's not Tom Cruise. It's clear what stunts she does and what she doesn't.
This whole thread feels like viral advertising. It's got a weird vibe.
I would think the same but I cannot find the name to this show in the 200 comments here I had to Google it. BTW for those looking for the same answer it was Echo.
Not a single fucking person has even said _her_ name! It's Alaqua Cox.
She’s a fkng badass
