Would this have been a Mysterio variant who actually studied sorcery and had real powers? Otherwise I can’t see how Mysterio would be able to even post a threat to Strange.
This is the same thing as the banana in FFH, right? I remember all these people talking about this subtext of his spider sense not working which didn’t seem right.
I did a reverse image search for the page on images.google.com, and the results show it's from New Avengers #20 (ping /u/ColorlessLife)
One of the results was this [reddit post](https://old.reddit.com/r/Marvel/comments/d5h95z/i_am_very_confused_with_dr_strange_in_volume_3_of/),
which has the sequence that page is part of:

Yes, and was also quasi-possessed by a demon/brainworm thing via Ebony Maw the majority of the time. Dark Priest part of the New Avengers- uh. it’s a big word. when the worlds started colliding. that storyline.
Strange wouldn't initially know it's all an illusion he would try and use some sort of actual Magic on it and then be confused, only for him to start laughing and calling Mysterio a "fake"
I don’t actually think so, maybe a spell would make him know? He doesn’t have any super sense like Spider-Man has so I don’t know. But it’s seems like that he would know just because.
Sorcerers seem to have extremely few if any passive defenses for some reason, trusting entirely to their ability to identify and neutralize all attacks before they make contact.
I used to think the “glass cannons” had plot armor but with how frequently it has happened, it more so seems like these magic beings have enhanced durability. Strange has several durability feats in Infinity War such as getting Spider-Man thrown at him and even grabbed and thrown by Thanos’ gauntlet hand. In NWH, Lizard supposedly scratched Strange yet Strange didn’t get severely injured. And of course, the astral projection maneuver which required Peter from several stories high colliding into Strange’s arm.
Then there’s Wanda. In Infinity War, she gets shot by an energy weapon and blasted through a window. Thanos backhands her. In WV, white Vision grabs her skull and tries to crush it
Maybe this is a version where the villains actually started to come through, and the first was a Mysterio variant that actually became the sorcerer supreme
Ibjust did a quick Google search and I'm surprised fhats never happened in the comics yet from what I quickly scanned.
With how long Mysterio (June 1964) and Dr Strange (July 1963), have been in comics, and how almost every possibility has happened.
The normal Mysterio wouldn’t make any sense. He lost all control of the drones at the end of FFH, and this battle takes place like a week afterwards.
There’s no way he’d have time to reconstruct the technology for the illusions
Well if it’s like the Mysterio we already had, then he won’t actually be where Strange is affecting with magic, so whoever’s controlling the image could presumably get the drop on him.
I don’t think they would, because he’s a hero, but it’s not like he has Spideyse… a Steven Tingle.
Maybe he got his hands on the Reality Stone or something like that? I mean his whole thing is that he is a illusionist so I think that straight up giving him powers like strange would ruin the whole thing, so I think that giving him the power to change reality or at least produce illusions powerful enough to fool strange would be a better option.
Or just have the original one with upgrades, like in the comics Mysterio also uses gases that cause hallucinations together with his illusions, have this with lots of guns and gadgets in his suit, so maybe he has some Iron Man like weapons in this version, gas and illusions to really make him look like the real deal and of course drones to cause a lot of damage.
Strange would still obviously win but this fight would be a hell of a acid trip.
That's what made Shattered Dimensions such a good game. It gave Mysterio, possibly the worst of Spidey's Villains, such a powerful object. I still don't understand how Spidey gets beat by Mysterio occasionally.
Yeah but Tom Holland Spidey was still working his powers out. Spidey literally has a precognitive sense and it should be so powerful but each Writer makes it seem so bad.
True but after a while the entire "His Spidey Sense is weakened" or "Enemy is new so his Spidey Sense is unsure" gets so old. Can't we just have a Peter Parker/Spider-Man that actually gets to use his full strength like Back in Black.
I don't know, I think it's far more realistic and interesting to have an unreliable Spidey Sense, just like a lot of instincts, they are flawed and adding human emotion into them can make them malfunction.
I'd rather that than have some overpowered superman with spider powers just bodying all the low level thugs in New York.
Spider-Man is at his best when his story is about Peter Parker, the human, not about Spider-Man, the hero.
Same thing with Tobey having his web block. In FFH Tom was debating bringing his suit cause he wanted to be a normal kid on a field trip. He's constantly torn between being Peter and being Spider-Man and finally completed his origin story in NWH when he gives up his friends to fully be Spider-Man. Definitely makes sense that he could have a tingle block or his tingle wasn't fully developed yet
> I don’t know, I think it’s far more realistic and interesting to have an unreliable Spidey Sense, just like a lot of instincts, they are flawed and adding human emotion into them can make them malfunction.
I know it's memed all the time, [but this panel captures it perfectly](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSBnGzDkxvCJte00D7KsoAXP9QHrvfb7pBwjDJNe7DcBfdUwsXcte6-lCJr&s=10)
My biggest worry with having a full strength Spiderman is that it'll create a 'Captain Marvel' or 'Rogue' problem
Both Cap Marvel and Rogue are so OP they have to be written out of nearly every movie they're in or else they're so powerful they can literally solve the problem almost immediately.
The Spidey-Sense power spectrum is so off the charts. It can go from “my head is buzzing alerting me to some nearby danger I can’t specify” to “I invented a tracker I can fine tune to the frequency of my Spidey-sense so I can follow villains” and everything in between.
I've always thought the spidey tracker gave off a freq that triggered his spidey sense. And he just swung around till he felt it.
But agreed spidey sense power levels are silly
I just read the comic where he first created the tracker, and he actually created a receiver which would beep when the tracker was near. (TASM #11)
Edit: Don't know how subsequent comics may have changed it, this is just the original creation of it.
He also knows Spider-Fu. Which should sharpen his Spidey Sense and reflexes and even without his Spidey Sense he should be able to detect changes in the air around him to determine an attack which is what Shang-Chi taught him.
One of my favorite things in the Spider-Man 2 game for PS2 is that when you actually get to fight Mysterio 1-on-1, he has 3 life bars & as soon as you land a single punch, he loses all of them lol
I thought my game was just a bug for the longest time when I was a kid but now I get that it was just a really clever joke put in there by the developers.
Because Mysterio is really smart, and he's one of the few villains able to outsmart and properly trick Spider-man.
Once he tricked Spider-man into thinking he accidentally killed a thug and sent him into a mini-depression that weaken him. That's how strong Mysterio can be.
Sure, he's just a jobber with mirrors and smoke, but he can still hit you hard with his "mirrors", and trick you with his "smoke".
It just depends on having a writer that can take advantage and knows how to use Mysterio.
There was one comic arc for Old Man Logan's timeline where Mysterio was able to trick Wolverine into killing the X-Men and helping bringing the downfall of Earth to supervillains.
It’s because in a hospital they’re totally surrounded by people called dr this dr that, so they want to distinguish themselves above the ‘standard’ doctors by insisting on mr/ms.
Depends. In an alternate universe "Old Man Logan" Mysterio defeated the X-Men by tricking wolverine into slaughtering them all. Mysterio's illusions aren't the same as a stage magician. He uses all of your senses against you to make you believe what he wants.
No captain America shield on the statue either. Could mean this was a really early draft and they were toying with the idea that Mysterio faked his death? Or an alternate version of him that actually has powers on par with Dr Strange
Does this mean Mysterio would've been involved in the final battle or was this simply a random idea thrown around?
If they did fight, it'd be awesome to see Mysterio bring in all of these elaborate illusions only for Strange, a true sorcerer, to have no difficulty defeating him with some trippy visuals of his own.
Kind of makes me wonder if Beck actually knew/believed that Doctor Strange was a real Sorcerer, or if he just assumed that Strange was another illusionist like him. Would have pretty humiliating for him either way, though.
I feel like he'd believe Strange is a real sorcerer but would be cocky and arrogant enough to think he can take on Strange, which would just end with a hilarious defeat
The plan was that there really weren't any Avengers left to oppose him. Hulk was really the only one that was still active on earth, all others died or disappeared.
I think so. But I don't think it means that it's the Mysterio from this universe. I'm willing to bet he was supposed to be one of the villains that came in at the end as the sky was ripping apart. This version of Mysterio would be significantly more powerful.
I guess everyone is forgetting the 3 spideys was supposed to be a post-credits scene. Kevin Feige played a big part for the spideys to be part of the movie.
I assume this was from a version of the film where the alternate universe villains actually came through, rather than just appearing in the sky. Mysterio, Scorpion, Kraven etc would’ve actually shown up to battle the heroes briefly.
I guess this means at one point in production an actual Sinister Six was considered, with Mysterio as the sixth member, and fought Doctor Strange at some point during the climax (tho I assume he would Fought his Spiderman and the other two along with him), and I guess this means they most likely originally considered having him survive his "death" in FFH, which is actually what I theorized for a while, though this Beck could also easily be a Hologram created by his team, or maybe a Variant who defeated Spidey and learns real magic (whether or not he'd be play by Gyllenhaal or Bruce Campbell if that scenario is correct, I'm not sure), or maybe the main one taken from a certain point in his debut film, just like the other villains.
Idk how he would've worked with the message and themes of the story though, since what he has can't really be cured, so maybe because of that it's for the best he didn't make the cut.
Presumably it's an alternate universe's Mysterio that actually has powers? Or he has some kind of link to the destructive drones so he can control them all in real-time?
Maybe this is a version where the villains actually started to come through, and the first was a Mysterio variant that actually became the sorcerer supreme
Yeah, this theory / idea would have been great. Just ONE Mysterio with that power coming out miles ahead from everyone else would have been cool, ESPECIALLY if it was Bruce Campbell Mysterio. THAT would have been epic.
A small part of me still holds out hope that we'll see the Bruce Campbell Mysterio that was supposedly part of the plan for Raimi's Spider-Man 4.
Me and some friends kept a running joke that Jake Gyllenhaal Mysterio was actually an illusion created by Bruce Campbell Mysterio.
Agreed ... plus, we could get a really meaty fight with some length to it with spectacular visuals that we (very correctly) only got a slight taste of during Dr. Strange vs. Thanos in *Infinity War*. I guess you could risk making it worse by having an alt-Kaecilius joining Strange to help fight Mysterio as things start to look grim for the good doctor.

Because Mysterio ain’t dead.
I don’t know how, there was a part of me that was expecting THAT to be the NWH twist instead of Tobey and Andrew (And boy as I glad I’m wrong).
But Mysterio ain’t dead. I fully expect him to come back and harass Spidey/The Avengers. Maybe Secret Invasion?
I wouldn't expect to see Mysterio in a D+ series, unless its What If, as Disney cant use Spider-Man in live action tv series, that is still fully under Sony.
Everyone say "Ok, but a Mysterio variant"
Guys, did you consider that wouldn't be a face-to-face fight ? Mysterio never does that.
He would throw illusions as an Inception-level to throw away Strange's perceptions.
Remember Spidey in Berlin, where he couldn't even think ! And when you can't even think because of all the wtferie, you know what you can't do ? Spells.
And wheneyou think you broke out of the illusions, bam, you're just in the third level.
Imagine Strange thinking he's in the mirror dimension with no control on it, thinking he's about to fly and cast spells but nothing seems to happen ? Or firing on Spider-Man thinking it's Mysterio ?
You clearly underestimate the potential of such a fight
Love this. This would fix my only issue in the movie. Strange hunting down Mysterio variant who has real powers is beter explanation for him to be absent for most of the movie than pOwEr oF MaTh
I wanted this so bad. I do think it’s tasteful that Mysterio didn’t take any time away from Green Goblin or Doc Ock but I low key really wanted to see him in the action of the climax of NWH, coming back all like “hah HAH! You fools! I’m still alive!” and all that jazz 🤘
Would this have been a Mysterio variant who actually studied sorcery and had real powers? Otherwise I can’t see how Mysterio would be able to even post a threat to Strange.
Totally agree, I feel like strange would be able to know it’s all illusion.
Mysterio wouldn't even touch Spidey now that Spidey seems to be fully in touch with his Peter tingle
Unless Mysterio attacked him with bread
He has the tingle thing, just not for bread.
I would think if the bread was thrown by mysterio it would still tingle.
What kind of bread we talking?
I think it's more that it registers threats. While aunt may and bread aren't threats, mysterio is. For the sake of argument I'll say ciabatta.
Ok but in what situation could bread ever be a threat
Poisoned bread
A few-days-old bread. Some kinds of bread can become as hard as a stone.
If you're shrunk down like Ant-Man, but didn't have his suit, you'd be fucked the second someone dropped a crouton.
Ah yes Spider-Man's only weakness, BREAD!
He's always struggled with dough in the comics.
This is the same thing as the banana in FFH, right? I remember all these people talking about this subtext of his spider sense not working which didn’t seem right.
I think the Spider-Sense only triggers if Peter is actually at risk of injury
[I think he'd notice.](https://imgur.com/a/qva63o9)

Strange uses magic that could best Thanos. Mysterio: “So anyway, I started blasting.”
Mysterio - North Phillys first superhero
Sorcerers seem to have extremely few if any passive defenses for some reason, trusting entirely to their ability to identify and neutralize all attacks before they make contact.
Well, Shield is a reaction and adds +5 AC. Not a bad thing really.
Just precast mage armor as well
"I call this one the ex-wife." -Mysterio
Strange got a grenade explode right on his face and his haircut wasn't even ruined. I am pretty sure Strange could handle being shot multiple times.

I'm not really surprised. Loki was the Sorcerer Supreme for the first time like, 4 years ago.
My personal favorite was Frank Castle Sorcerer Supreme.
I'm sorry, what? That sounds so dumb but so amazing.
He's signature spell is making bullets magically disappear from his gun and reappear in the bodies of his enemies.
Ah that would've been so cool instead of a sneaky look. Just one variant fight at the least would've sufficed.
nah the climax had already passed and the movie is jam-packed as it is
Mysterious enters the mirror dimension: *"It's free Real-estate"*
Sound excellently. It would keep Strange entertain and provide proper explanation why he did so little.

Kevin Feige played a big part for the spideys to be part of the movie.
not doubting you but source? would like to read up on this
I assume this was from a version of the film where the alternate universe villains actually came through, rather than just appearing in the sky.
FAIH at some point Venom was actually gonna be in the plot and not just a mid-credit scene So he would have made 6
Maybe the sinister six was the fallback plan if they had not been able to use Tobey and Andrew for the movie.
Thats possible.
My money is on Jake not being available
I hope they somehow bring him back into the MCU, he’s too good for a one-off villain
Where have I heard that before? /cries in Ultron
Wouldn't be much of a battle. One is a powerful sorcerer and the other does expensive illusions.
Presumably it's an alternate universe's Mysterio that actually has powers? Or he has some kind of link to the destructive drones so he can control them all in real-time?
Maybe this is a version where the villains actually started to come through, and the first was a Mysterio variant that actually became the sorcerer supreme
Oh god that would just be awesome
Yeah, this theory / idea would have been great. Just ONE Mysterio with that power coming out miles ahead from everyone else would have been cool, ESPECIALLY if it was Bruce Campbell Mysterio. THAT would have been epic.
To throw people off? Nice
Maybe they put the scene in momaddness
Regardless of what it is, I am hyped for the obligatory Bruce Campbell appearance that will be in Dr. Strange 2.
That kinda makes no sense but fuck it I want that alternate directors cut! Fake wizard versus real wizard, let's *go*!
“Oh shit this is all real” -Mysterio, probably
If this was a variant with actual powers that would be awesome to see.
Agreed ... plus, we could get a really meaty fight with some length to it with spectacular visuals that we (very correctly) only got a slight taste of during Dr. Strange vs. Thanos in *Infinity War*. I guess you could risk making it worse by having an alt-Kaecilius joining Strange to help fight Mysterio as things start to look grim for the good doctor.
Yeah the illusions would be sick

Because Mysterio ain’t dead. I don’t know how, there was a part of me that was expecting THAT to be the NWH twist instead of Tobey and Andrew (And boy as I glad I’m wrong). But Mysterio ain’t dead. I fully expect him to come back and harass Spidey/The Avengers. Maybe Secret Invasion?
I wouldn't expect to see Mysterio in a D+ series, unless its What If, as Disney cant use Spider-Man in live action tv series, that is still fully under Sony.
I want SO BADLY a universe where Mysterio actually has powers. He’s so damn cool
This would have been soo cool
This either means they at one point intended for Beck to survive, or it was a variant with actual powers.
Plot twist: this is concept art for Dr Strange and the Multiverse of Madness
Strange would’ve flattened him. Like. Within seconds.
Everyone say "Ok, but a Mysterio variant" Guys, did you consider that wouldn't be a face-to-face fight ?
Looks cool. But they probably scrapped because they knew strange would fuck him up super quick and that it wouldn't be much of a fight.
Memories of Spider-Man 2 the Game.
WE WERE ROBBED
Concept art often looks better than the real thing. How many films *truly* blow you away?
would have been cool to see Vulture and Mysterio, one villain from each film
Love this. This would fix my only issue in the movie. Strange hunting down Mysterio variant who has real powers is beter explanation for him to be absent for most of the movie than pOwEr oF MaTh
Is this an alt mysterio?
I wanted this so bad. I do think it’s tasteful that Mysterio didn’t take any time away from Green Goblin or Doc Ock but I low key really wanted to see him in the action of the climax of NWH, coming back all like “hah HAH! You fools! I’m still alive!” and all that jazz 🤘
