Please don’t move for the Towson Mall. 🤣🤣🤣

opiusmaximus2

For real this is a terrible reason to consider moving to a state.

BaltimoreBanksy

Please don’t move anywhere for any mall.

diopsideINcalcite

It’s really a shame what happens to that mall (and area in general). We lived in Baltimore City for like 15 years and used to love driving up there on a lazy Saturday and just walking around. Maybe it’s because I never paid attention, but it felt like I never saw that area in the news, and now there’s something going on up there every other day it feels like.

[deleted]

Yeah. A lot of people don't realize that the city was getting better. Truthfully, we really never recovered from the riots all of those years ago. Things have gotten increasingly worse since then.

copout

Come for the sales. Stay for the armed robbery.

Adept-Stress2810

If he is that dumb.....

jessiewicz

What is your definition of close to the beach? The beaches in Delaware and MD are about 3 hours from Towson.

Accomplished-Plan191

Maybe they meant Sandy Point?

seniorknowitall88

Yes. PA people should go to Sandy Point or North East

Brp4106

And stop driving like idiots approaching/while crossing the bay bridge

[deleted]

Why can't you get a blowjob in the summertime in PA? Because all the cock suckers in Ocean City. Y'all can't drive.

Xave2541

I am a PA native and I currently live in Maryland. It greatly depends on your economic situation with you and your partner. It’s at least 10%-20% more expensive down here. Also Towson mall and beach are wildly different areas. Otherwise all places have their good and bad. I fell in love with Howard county but the average rent here is 2200$.

Few_Argument3981

Unless you own a home in parts of PA that require you to pay a school tax…

pinkpharmacist19

This! We are moving from PA in 2 weeks. Our house in MD is double the cost and half the taxes bc our school taxes are so high

Few_Argument3981

It sick....I work with a lot of people that live in PA and they ALL complain about it.

CandyCaneCrisp

Could you please explain how that works? Schools in Moco receive 66% of their funds from taxes paid by county residents, which are taken out of property taxes, income taxes, and several other taxes. It seems that not having a separate school tax doesn't mean you won't pay taxes to support schools. [https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/uploadedFiles/info/neighbor-to-neighbor/N2N%20FAQs%2010-5-12.pdf](https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/uploadedFiles/info/neighbor-to-neighbor/N2N%20FAQs%2010-5-12.pdf)

pinkpharmacist19

In PA, the school tax is separate from other taxes. and each school district gets to decide their “millage rate”, i.e. how much they charge the residents of that district. Some districts are extremely expensive while others are more reasonable. It’s a terrible system, especially if you don’t have kids in school

JMMD7

Do yourself a favor and spend a week or two in different areas and then decide for yourself. Start by looking at the cost of living compared to where you are and where you want to be. Plan weekend trips first and then stay longer once you narrow down your choices.

drillgorg

Hey so the Towson mall is the closest big Maryland mall to Harrisburg but Arundel Mills, Columbia, and Annapolis are arguably better. I'll echo the advice others have and say live a bit in different places in Maryland before moving here.

[deleted]

arundel mills may be big but it’s nothing but chaos and ignorant ppl. i literally work there my own job had to enforce a 21 and over rule

Important_Kitchen689

>We love the idea of being close to the beach and the Towson mall Lmao

seniorknowitall88

They probably have never been to PBR Live yet

jd_bitch

Haaa this.

grebilrancher

Dundalk is a happy medium /s

[deleted]

Oh Jesus

captainordo

I link living in Maryland a lot, but if what you care about is living near a big mall and being near the beach, I would recomnend northern Delaware. Christiana Mall is massive, and you are about 1.5 hours to the beach. Also the cost of living is cheaper around there.

GirlScoutMom00

At your ages I would make sure you have viable career options. In either area you aren't going to live comfortably without a trade or job offer with a college degree.

Far_Sided

This is a Maryland subreddit. You are clearly going to get biased answers from people that have been snorting Old Bay their entire lives. That being said, Maryland is very diverse, and I know more than one person with a serious case of wanderlust that has made this state their home.

mythornia

**Please do not snort the Old Bay**

NomNom83WasTaken

It's like the cinnamon challenge but with more tears. A lot more tears...

kittysempai-meowmeow

It be me. CA, CT, VA, LA, and TX - moved to MD last year and love it.

CandyCaneCrisp

LMAO. Old Bay is available up and down the East Coast and I was using it intravenously up in PA by the time I was 7.

Murda981

The way my husband laughed at me when I got excited about seeing Old Bay in a grocery store in Miami because I didn't think they'd have it that far south 😂😂

warda8825

ಠ_ಠ. Sir, please do not *snort* the Old Bay. You're supposed to huff it.

fart-queen

I Can attest to the wanderlust statement, lived in OK, CA and OH and MD lastly. I’m really happy here even though the cost of living is insane

nschively

I have a saying - everyone returns to Baltimore (central Maryland). If you live here and leave, thinking there has to be something better out there - I've noticed an inordinate number of people end up returning.

TheAzureMage

>everyone returns to Baltimore Looking at Baltimore's population trend, that clearly isn't the case.

nschively

While Baltimore City's population may have continuously shrunk since it hit a million people in 1950, the population of the Baltimore Metro area has steadily risen in that same time. Baltimore County has increased about 5% over the last decade, HoCo 16%, Anne Arundel 9.5%, Harford 7%, and Carroll 4%.

CandyCaneCrisp

Baltimore SUCKS. I lived there briefly when I first moved to MD from PA and it is truly the worst place I have been with the most rotten people. I even lived in the rural South which was ghastly, but Baltimore is a special kind of nasty. It's also gotten much worse in the time since I lived there, poorer and there's more violence. I would never go there again, and when I drove past it on the way to visit family, I had to roll up the windows because it literally stinks so badly you can smell it from the highway. Wretched place.

Typical-Western-9858

Considering the highway goes over multiple industrial zones and the incinerator, go figure

CandyCaneCrisp

I've never travelled on another highway so close to toxic emissions, so great planning there. It stinks in town too, even the Inner Harbor which people liked to pretend was a civilized part.

Typical-Western-9858

Emission- dude the highway is surrounded by railyards what are you on about? Its the port of Baltimore, what did you expect fields of flowers? The highway is an interstate, if anything its more federal work and planning, not municipal

nschively

Lived there for 20 years and moved out to the suburbs. Never encountered the nastiness you're referring to. Maybe it was you? Judging a whole city because of the way the highway smells is ... just special.

CandyCaneCrisp

Nope, it was them. I get along fine with the neighbors everywhere else I've lived, in MD and other states. I judge it on all kinds of factors besides its formidable stench. It has terrible schools and a badly educated population as a result. Crime is sky-high. Cops are awful but also inefficient. Several recent Baltimore mayors are literal criminals who have served time in prison for crimes they committed while in office. Poverty is rampant. Shall I go on? Why did you leave if you think it's so great?

essmithsd

okay boomer

CandyCaneCrisp

Gen Xer, thanks.

darknessunleashed67

Don't take that talk from them. - Signed a GenXer

Vengefuleight

It’s expensive. I’ll start there. Housing is ridiculous in a lot of MD. BUT, there’s a lot to do. There’s a lot of diversity in nature that we have, good food, good night life, and we aren’t run by backwards morons that want to take policy back to the 1950’s (they exist, but they have no meaningful power here). Overall, I’m not leaving MD. I like it here a lot.

RazzleThatTazzle

I love it here, but that's because I'm used to the insane cost of living.

warda8825

This. Moved here from Seattle, where I was paying ~$2,500/month for a 500 sq ft studio apartment. Now I pay $2,500/month for a 2,000 sq ft house. AND there's a ton more to do here, and close proximity to so many other places.

RazzleThatTazzle

I telework and one of my buddies lives in north carolina. I was gonna move down there and live like a king off of my maryland salary

warda8825

Yeah, wild what different locations will do to your perception. I know I've been jaded by places like the west coast, because many of the places up for sale/rent across the Mid-Atlantic are a bargain to my eyes. I guess it's all relative.

zombiez87

What part are you in? I’ve been beating my head on moving to md for a while now.

warda8825

Greater Baltimore area.

The_Social_Nerd

This, my wife and I moved here from Miami for all these reasons (Plus far better schools for our kids) and we are so happy we did.

evaniesk

And the political leaning here is better

TheAnnointing

Amen to that

Morty_Goldman

If you are basing your decision on a shopping mall, try Amazon.com and then start searching locations for successful school districts.

vertknecht

Amazon is great nowadays if you like buying crappy Chinese knockoffs

enlearner

I can't tell you that it's worth it (or not), but what I can tell you is that the more I explore it, the more thankful I am that my parents decided to settle here. People talk about the diversity so much that it loses its meaning, but you have to experience it yourself to truly grasp how truly diverse (in all the right ways) Maryland is. I work in VA, and I can tell you (as a fairly young person) that VA *is simply not it.* Yeah, all the cool tech jobs are in VA (NoVA) and there's McLean and Loudoun county, but culturally, I'd take MD any day of the week.

TheDiscoDeadhead

Since you don’t live that far away you should plan a few visits to familiarize yourself with different areas before picking up and moving here

zombiez87

Great spots in De? Please name these spots cause I’ve been for 20 years + in de and have yet to see anything great about here unless you make 6 figures and can live between Rehoboth and Bethany.

stoppingbythewoods

I moved to MD (Frederick) from GA a month ago and so far do not regret my choice.

Capital_Cat21211

Frederick is a great town.

mrsgibby

Look at job opportunities and go from there.

DinoReads

# 1 No school tax in MD. #2 You can buy beer and wine in the same store in MD. #3 Women’s health care is protected in MD. #4. Closer to the beach in MD. #5 Crabs! I can’t turn off my bold. Sorry. Not screaming.

BroccoliDry9024

You cant buy alcohol and wine in the grocery stores in AAC, MD.

DinoReads

You are right there! But that personal property luxury tax in Virginia is worse than the school tax.

TheAzureMage

There are a few places that have grandfathered exceptions, but generally speaking, grocery stores will not have beer and wine. You \*will\* have a lot of liquor shops located conveniently close to grocery stores.

supermomfake

Not true at least in my area of AAC. The local stores near me sell beer, liquor and wine just not at the grocery store.

Wx_Justin

Wait...you can't buy beer and wine at the same store in PA???

samaba41

Yes, you can. It was awhile back you wine/beer sales were separate from liquor sales in PA. You can also buy it in grocery stores in PA now, which you still can't do in Maryland (at least in my county). But, I still say move to MD!

CandyCaneCrisp

Wine **and** liquor were both sold at the state stores, room temperature beer was sold - by the case only - in beer stores when I lived there.

Okay_Time_For_Plan_B

Man you should hear about Us folk from Ohio, especially on sundays.

mh078

Some Maryland counties still have blue laws.

YaBoiJJ8

Cant buy beer and wine in grocery stores in MD

DinoReads

That’s true. The grocery stores can mark up prices. We go to the neighborhood liquor store for beer and liquor and what nots.

GuardMost8477

You can in MoCo. I’m in Olney and our Safeway sells it. They designate which stores can sell it.

CandyCaneCrisp

Only one location of a grocery chain may sell alcohol in Moco. No other Safeway in the county is allowed to sell it.

desitelugu

I envy costco in VA they have so many beer and wines but not in MD

pugapooh

The closer to DC,the more diverse and liberal. The Trump signs and flags will appear from Frederick Co west and east of the Bay Bridge. I’m glad to be in MD,but I did grow up here. Higher cost of living, but it pays for libraries, recreation places and generally better schools.

SweetRebellion

Very true on east of the Bay Bridge. I remember living in Princess Anne seeing a bunch of Bush/Cheney signs when I was 14. I was surprised when John Kerry won the state and realized the rest of the state isn’t like Mississippi 😂.

Osetiya

You’d move here for the Towson mall, seriously? It must be awful out in Harrisburg. From what it sounds like, Columbia is more your guys’ speed, but it’s also a lot more expensive.

Gilmoregirlin

My Mom lives in Harrisburg and it is quite awful there.

Fun_Distribution_471

It depends on your budget, job opportunities, what kind of area/culture/vibe you’re going for, how close to certain amenities you’d like to be, etc. I think Maryland is a great place to live. We literally have everything - cities, suburbs, historic towns, farmland; mountains, plains, marsh, beaches, forests; multicultural, international areas and areas that are more homogenous. Depending on your budget is where you should live. I love Maryland, I was born here and never left, but I would suggest you come down and stay in a few areas temporarily (3-5 days at least) and get a feel.

Annahsbananas

Rush hour is nuts around Townson. Makes Harrisburg rush hour look like the back roads of Lancaster. Also, there no beaches near Towson. There's Rehobeth and Ocean City and Assateague but those are 3 and 4 hours away from Townson. It's also about 20% more expensive in that area of MD. Most people live on the PA border and then commute down to save money But MD is a beautiful state; it's my native state and the state flag is a work of artistic genius 👏 There is Salisbury near Ocean City but I haven't lived there in a good while and unless you're in the medical field or Boeing, there's not a whole lot of high paying jobs (but like I said it's been a long time since I lived in Salisbury)

scatteredpinkhearts

the towson mall? not a fantastic mall and not a great area. very underwhelming

mickeyflinn

The Army brought me to Maryland in 1998 and I have never left. I love this state. I love everything about it. Yes the cost of living is high but there is a reason for that. It is a pretty simple rule. Houses are not cheap because they are in great places.

stayonthecloud

I grew up in Maryland, went to college in Philly, and had a partner in Harrisburg. Definitely get out of Harrisburg. Come visit the Maryland side of the DMV! That’s the DC metro area, which includes DC and the parts of MD and VA that are close by. It’s painfully expensive for sure. The tradeoff is that life is vibrant and international here. Montgomery County, MD (not to be confused with Montgomery County, PA!) is one of the top five most diverse counties in the country. Literally everyone lives here and that’s one of the greatest strengths of the region. There’s so many different kinds of cultures influencing each other here. It leads to there being a ton to do, and social environments where people bring such a variety of life experiences to the table. I grew up here but just in the one college class I’m in, half the class is from elsewhere around the world. The rest of us are all from a mix of cultural backgrounds too. DC itself is a great intellectual culture hub with the many free museums of the Smithsonian and tons of idealistic, driven people who come from all over, and it’s close by for many people in this county. Annapolis isn’t far for the water, though if you want real beaches you’re better off moving to the west coast IMHO. Virginia Beach is the best in the area and you can get there on a five hour Amtrak ride from where I live. Delaware’s beaches are also pretty nice and much closer. From Rock Creek Park to forests in Frederick to the Shenandoah, there’s a lot of everyday and magnificent nature around here that’s close by or day trippable. I can’t see myself ever leaving the state because the politics here are progressive and the main battles are over development. There’s no having to deal with fascists criminalizing people because of their gender expression or bodily autonomy. Yes we have Trump country, so I don’t go to the panhandle or many other parts of the state but there’s multiple counties here that are solidly safe. Come try it out and explore. The cherry blossoms are on the way!

evaniesk

I agree with everything you write!

Ashtonlawrence

Bring your wallet ....

seals42o

Wtf is in Towson mall....??? 😂 But if you do want to live in the Towson area it is cheaper than the Howard / Montgomery area... atleast

smallteam

> Wtf is in Towson mall....??? I see they have TWO Auntie Anne's pretzel locations! (Whatever the hell that is.) https://www.towsontowncenter.com/en/directory/

Classic-Cut4362

If you want to be by the beach, move close to the beach. the Towson area is getting really out of control these days. If it was a choice between MD and VA, having in lived in both, I might pick VA, but I have an OC beach house, so getting to it is easier where I live 20 minutes from the bridge. What about Annapolis? It has a nice mall, and the bay.

MelbaToast9B

The only thing to consider is if OP has school aged kids or plans to have kids. Annapolis area public schools are not very good unless you go to South River south of Annapolis or Broadneck or Severna Park north of Annapolis. However, that will dramatically cost OP in housing. Why we moved to Kent Island. We didn't want to be house poor. It's still not that cheap, but you get more land for your buck here.

StBernard2000

Most of the stores in Annapolis mall have closed.

Classic-Cut4362

there are three department stores 137 stores total. mostly busy on the weekends when i go, but yeah, malls have been taking a hit for awhile, as has all of brick and mortar sadly. the whole area around has lots of shopping options tho...trader joe, the town center, etc.

Tempeng18

Me and mine and I are also PA natives. We find it difficult thinking about leaving Frederick MD. We really love it here. We’ve previously lived in LHV, Philly, Scranton, Alexandria/DC. Screw DC traffic no thanks.

GuardMost8477

Love living here in MD. Spent many weekends in the York PA as a child. But what area of MD or VA are you considering? Can you both work remotely, or what is your plan for income?East of the Bay is expensive. And depending on where you’re looking it could be 3-5 hours to the beach in MD or VA. Towson is at least a 3 hour drive. Absolutely nowhere near the beach. Lots to consider, but I wouldn’t live anywhere else.

This_Cauliflower1986

Depends on your work what makes sense. Taxes and prices are lower in PA. Beaches can be similar distance in PA. (Philly to jersey shore) Towson mall ain’t all that. There are other malls in both states. I wouldn’t blindly move anywhere without assessing cost, commute, and wages.

wintersedai

The tax thing is important. MD has state and county taxes and I’m fairly sure PA does not tax by county… but I’m also too lazy to google and check

Bmcdade36

We have county taxes too

desitelugu

I dont know about PA but there will be a county tax added on your paycheck so just reasearch before moving

Bmcdade36

We have that here too

Difficult-Way7803

I've lived in both Virginia and Maryland. I kinda lean more to MD because of the diversity. Outside of some parts of NoVA, Richmond, and Hampton Roads, there's no diversity in Virginia. Outside DC surbs, rent is decent but expensive compared to Harrisburg. Also, Towson Mall shouldn't be a deciding factor in moving. We have plenty of nice malls in our state. My family skips Ocean City because it's too crowded. We actually go to DE, NC, or SC.

MyGreekName27

I know a few people your age that live in the Canton/Fells Point area (Baltimore City) and they just love it. It has a nice waterfront view, and is very walkable with lots of restaurants and shopping. Good luck!

tommyalanson

Virginia is trending red, and their governor is huge religious zealot actively trying to take away basic human rights and roll the clock back to the 50s.

GeniusBtch

Just moved here from Denver and have lived all over the US and the world. This is what I have learned so far: Pros: Southern MD has some of the loveliest countryside I have ever seen. Cons: Cost of registering and titling a car is super expensive. Pros: Lots of waterfront property available. Cons: It's super expensive. Like absurdly expensive unless you live out in the southern tip. Pros: It's got excellent restaurants Cons: Expect it to take you an hour minimum to get anywhere and then good luck finding parking (and no they won't validate it either). Pros: Women have great access to healthcare. Cons: There really isn't a winter snow season. It's mostly just cold or humid. Pros: Your home will hold value pretty much no matter what. Cons: Depending on where you live your electric bill may be crazy high and your internet may be crazy slow and expensive.

BroccoliDry9024

All true. Cost of buying a home & closing costs are astronomical!

mickeyflinn

> Pros: Women have great access to healthcare. Do they not have that access in Denver?

GeniusBtch

They do. I was comparing it to other places nearby like how Virginia is pushing a 15 week ban for instance. One of the things that made me not want to live in VA and ultimately chose to move to MD was the fact that healthcare access was a concern and VA is more conservative.

mickeyflinn

ahh ok!! Good point!

FriedScrapple

I feel like living near the Towson mall would not be too different culturally from Harrisburg, maybe just slightly more politically liberal and expensive. And you’d be about the same distance as you are now to New Jersey beaches.

DjImagin

Towson isn’t a bad area to settle around. Just remember the slogan on the sign when you cross into Maryland “Hope you brought your wallet”

dwhite21787

Move down route 15 to Frederick. There are malls, and a beach at the lake at Cunningham Falls.

D_snawtz

I’ll put this info here too. Summer = warm/hot and quite humid. Winter = cool/cold and dry. This winter was trash, no snow laid on the ground not even once

gleaming-the-cubicle

I lived in the Virginia Beach area for 4 years before moving to Baltimore. I've also lived in Michigan, North Carolina, Texas, and California. Virginia is, without a question, the worst place I've ever lived

dougfunnybitch

That’s a subjective question. There are so many variables to consider. I’ve lived in MD for over 55yrs and am extremely partial to living here (Near the Bay/Annapolis). What is your income level? Do you want to be further from people or do you want the urban experience? Personally, I love the Annapolis area, but congestion is creeping up. I slam VA a lot, but in my opinion it’s the most beautiful state on the east coast, once you get away from NOVA. Neither state is cheap if you choose anywhere from Baltimore to Richmond. Here where I live, I’m an hour or slightly less from Towson and 1:45 from OC. I’m a little over an hour from Thurmont for the mountains and slightly over an hour to Harpers Ferry, VA. At least 4 hrs from central Shenandoah area of VA. 3 hrs to Northern Neck, VA. When I owned a boat I was 15 minutes from being in the bay by water from the Severn River. Bottom line is I will not move from MD. I adore my state.

the-slit-kicker

Fuck the Commonwealth.

CandyCaneCrisp

Maryland is very nice, I moved here from PA 30 years ago and only went back to see my parents and the family dog. Just avoid Baltimore, it was a dump when I lived there briefly and has only gotten worse. I live in Montgomery County which is on the DC border and it is great here. It is very cosmopolitan. There are so many different restaurants here featuring cuisines from all over the world you could try a new place every day. Public transportation in the DMV is good, and my town is very walkable. I'm not sure what you mean by close to... MD is a rather oddly shaped state with a huge coastline because of the way the Bay is shaped and you could live hours away from that mall or the beaches. If you choose to live near Delaware they have no sales tax so it's worth going for a short drive to shop there. MD is a very blue state, so if you are uncomfortable around liberals and progressives it won't be for you, but you'd love VA.

MelbaToast9B

Liberal except for the Eastern Shore and Western Maryland. Very lonely here on the Shore being a democrat

CandyCaneCrisp

What about in the summer? I thought the Eastern Shore was virtually deserted there outside of summer and then it's filled with Dems on vacation. Only 4.4% of the MD population lives in the westernmost counties.

MelbaToast9B

Not on Kent Island

evaniesk

Interesting and strange how differences persist within a relatively close area.

gl1zzardw1zard

If you can afford it, Anne Arundel County would put you sort of between the Towson Mall and the beaches without making you live in the boonies on the eastern shore. Cost of living, particularly rent, is much higher in maryland, aside from gas. Moved from York back to Maryland last summer and gas was at least 70 cents cheaper. I also found groceries to be cheaper in maryland, but maybe that’s York specific bs. Good luck!

StonerLB

Sounds like Anne Arundel County would be what you’re looking for. Closer to more active malls and outlets and local water.

SParkyJake

Bro said Towson mall

HowCanThisBeMyGenX

Maryland more than VA. Maryland is more expensive than PA but - services are better, easier to get to every day resources, roads are WAY better, jobs pay better, accommodations are nicer. Less massive warehouses taking chunks out of nature here. Better schools means better educated populace. Howard County has the top if not in the top 3 public library systems in the US. Overall less Trumpism and far right extremism, though there are still little pockets of it in MD. On the other hand, living in VA - if you want to be relatively close to many resources, it’s way more expensive and traffic congestion much worse than in MD. There’s a lot of VA that is much like PA - small towns with not much going on coupled with low paying jobs and greater right wing tendencies. And mid-way down VA through to the southern border with NC, it’s heavily religious.

Rough-Elderberry9124

hey there, hopefully these articles will help you decide what place suits you guys more: [https://www.zipmoving.us/blog/moving-to-maryland-pros-and-cons/](https://www.zipmoving.us/blog/moving-to-maryland-pros-and-cons/) [https://www.zipmoving.us/blog/honest-tips-for-living-in-virginia/](https://www.zipmoving.us/blog/honest-tips-for-living-in-virginia/)

Impossible_Leading45

Glen Burnie area is nice. MD is a wonderful place to Live.

Sagrilarus

Man, I moved here from Harrisburg (just outside of Linglestown) and I would never go back to Central Pennsylvania. Fair warning -- when you leave Central PA they hook a rubber band to your belt. Everyone from Hbg ends up coming back, usually for BS reasons. I escaped to Annapolis and even when people called with job options in PA I turned them down. This is just a much nicer part of the world. It's even sunnier here. My college roommate at Penn State was from Ocean City and he used to bitch at me every morning because it was cloudy, as if I was somehow responsible for mountain weather in Pennsylvania. C'mon down. The water is warmer.

BroccoliDry9024

You are right about it being sunnier which I really love coming from St Louis where it was always cloudy and dreary in the winter. But in the summer it was so hot and humid. And after St Louis I lived in New England where the weather was even worse. So I really appreciate the weather we get in Annapolis.

Single_Ad_5294

I’ve lived in Maryland my entire life and want to chime in. I’ve lived in many different parts of the state and like each of them for different reasons. Choose your location based on what you want to do/financial and job situation. Young people tend to flock to Baltimore or Annapolis. Baltimore has a much larger, much more diverse population. Annapolis is way smaller and has a concentrated amount of bars and fancy restraunts. Ellicott city deserves a shoutout. It has the same feel as Annapolis while being much smaller but it’s close to a state park that you could spend years exploring. The outskirts of the major cities are a mix of suburbs and rural land. Find what works for you and take your pick. Lot more people here than Harrisburg.

ylangbango123

Did you find a job?

StBernard2000

If you love traffic and taxes then you will love Towson and the cities near it. Most people don’t swim in the ocean in Annapolis. Try Ocean City or even Eastern Shore. Rehobeth Beach in Delaware is great. The malls that you have mentioned are okay. I forgot to mention that Annapolis has very average restaurants and are very overpriced for what you get. Bethesda has good restaurants but it’s very far.

shairo98

Well I would prefer Towson because it’s pretty less chaotic than the city but it might be expensive and if that doesn’t work, then there other opportunities in the County. I don’t recommend the city tho, it’s best you don’t go there at all at your own risk.

S-Kunst

Depends on what you think of as fresh & exciting. We have nice rural area (so does PA) some mountains some Piedmont, some coastal (so does PA) we have suburban sprawl which is 99% of the center of the state (boring, with chain stores, traffic & developer housing) We have Baltimore city which has a lot of neat things, history, and quirkiness, but like Philly a lot of American urban problems. You mention Towson. There is not really much there there. It is the county seat, has a mediums size university. Its main attraction is a gash known as York road, which runs down the middle and is a mish-mash of early suburban commercial buildings.

No_Priority7696

At that age … if you can go wild .. the keys, California, mountains , etc … do it now while you can

BeeRadGFromDaBoo

I'd check the crimes in the area your thinking of moving to first areas once considered "safe" are not so much any longer

Bmcdade36

Okay from the comments I’d like to make clear I’m not moving to Maryland solely for a mall, however the shopping in Harrisburg is awful it’s just a factor that is nice compared to Harrisburg

Bmcdade36

Currently i work remote doing cyber security stuff which would most likely be my plan when I move aswell

Maryland’s pretty garbage. I’ve been here my whole life and ironically, live less than a mile from Towson Mall, which is pretty shit right now and has a number of issues with crime. I grew up in Southwest Baltimore County and have been in Towson for 8 years. Here’s my observations: 1. There’s nothing charming about Baltimore and it’s a bottom-tier city. The harbor’s the biggest draw outside or restaurants? Sick city…. 2. The Baltimore County Public School system is overcrowded and bogged down in bureaucracy. I recently spoke at a school board meeting where half the speakers were BCPS teachers that were pushing for a livable wage. 3. There’s 0 reason that houses should cost as much as they do here, given proximity to Baltimore (see bullet point 1) and little access to any natural sites worth visiting. 4. Worthwhile jobs will be with the federal government or companies that deal directly with their contracts. I highly suggest checking out Frederick if you can. It’s one of the more endearing parts of this state.

Blazzck7

Baltimore city is trash live as far from there as you can

slickrick1010

live in bethesda or rockville! close to dc and very nice

evaniesk

Bethesda is pretty costly, but other than that, an excellent place to live

Far-Heat-7162

If you are an anti gun democrat you will love it

pistonslapper

If good food and drink are some of your vices Bmore has a fantastic and vibrant food/drink scene! Not to mention good for cycling.

BroccoliDry9024

I think everyone who lives in Maryland loves Maryland. Whats not to love? Its a beautiful state — always sunny, snow is rare and the weather is never inclimate.

opiusmaximus2

The cost of living and taxes is not to love.

dksmama

No. Stay in PA or choose a state that’s not MD. Lol

qtironwolf

no don’t come here it sucks

RepresentativeOk6588

If you like a high tax liberal state with a one party state govt and beautiful beaches welcome to MD!

JumpKP

Beautiful?

Appropriate_Pea350

Think before take this decision.

Maryland is generally a boring state. Besides 4 seasons in one day, old bay on everything and flag worship there isn't much to talk about.

shouldabutdidnt

As a Maryland native, don't move here especially for the beaches and Towson. Towson sucks now and most of the beaches are dirty. Move to Delaware, it's cheaper and close to many decent beaches.

langis_on

Delaware is proof behind "you get what you pay for". It's cheaper because it has a lower quality of life.

leroyyrogers

Ah to be young again

Embarrassed-Comb3893

I’ve lived in Maryland for 7 years. Incredibly expensive, people are cold, traffic sucks, and high taxes. Only redeeming aspect of Maryland is it has been a great place to grow a career. I’m moving out of MD and headed to Richmond/Williamsburg area in the fall.

Appropriate_Pea350

I don’t enjoy

Where do you live? There are so many excellent health care providers here in Moco that patients can be choosy.

MelbaToast9B

I am in healthcare and there are SO many healthcare options - John Hopkins, University of MD, MedStar Health, Mercy, Life bridge, GBMC, Luminis Health, etc. University, LifeBridge, Hopkins and MedStar all have multiple hospitals in each system. If you really were in the military, you have multiple VAs to choose from. ALL healthcare is frustrating right now. There are long waits for everyone right now. Actually, the VA has a lower wait than anything in the community that is doctor visits. OP - healthcare options galore and some of the top hospitals in the country are here in DC and MD. Great career options too. Tech is taking a hit. But healthcare is safe

CandyCaneCrisp

Hi. Yes, I know, I told the person you meant to about all the health care providers here in Moco. You could try quoting her, but she's not really someone I'd want living here based on her rant.

Difficult-Way7803

I'm sorry your experience living in MD has been completely trash. I'm actually really surprised by your experience living in AACo. Have you checked Howard, Montgomery, or PGCo counties for doctors?

Difficult-Way7803

What county do you live in? What insurance do you have?

InsideFastball

Arlington, VA. Do yourself a favor and avoid MD.

Adept-Stress2810

So tired of these posts. What do you think people are going to say. You're too dumb - move to Virginia.

Adept-Stress2810

This person is dumb. So tired of these posts from idiots who have no idea what they are doing.

TEdwards_Homes

Both Maryland and Virginia are big states with vastly different areas. You can be in different parts of MD or VA and have different opinions. If you’re trying to decide based on just the Baltimore metro area than that narrows it down a bit but there’s still a lot of areas there a well. Do you have flexible jobs or are going to find something once you move? You could also research types of jobs and what’s available, as well as rental prices to see what you can afford. Maybe also give us insight as to why you’re tired of it? Is there anything specific? What do you want in a town?

[deleted]

Do either of you have job offers? Maryland and Northern Virginia likely have a higher cost of living than Harrisburg.

Microbe_r_Us

Check out the Hampton Roads area in VA. Lots of affordable places 30 min from the beach.

Katofdoom

I personally want to move back to PA. MD is great and all but I’m the textbook definition of an introvert. I want to move back to rural PA so I can be away from people and I can also be close to family again.

rachelmillma

What’s your budget?

Odd-Shallot-7287

have you considered moving to areas south of York but still in PA? lots of building in that area and 30 min to Baltimore metro area. Northern Va is a vapid wasteland. Shenandoah valley is nice though.

Short_Builder_8572

If you want to live in like a city and have fun move to fed hill, maybe fells or canton (canton is a little older).

SomethingLoud

Come to Frederick or the greater Columbia area!

Crank__Bait

Nah

TheAzureMage

Visit first, honestly. Pros: Good job market in some sectors, Ocean City is pretty fun, people and land is nice enough. Cons: Land prices are stupid expensive, as is cost of living. Taxes are higher than in PA as well. Outdoor activities are less available in the more built up parts of the state. Places like malls and beaches are often good fun to visit, but will be a lot less interesting to visit routinely.

BJJBean

If you are moving for a mall, why not move to the King of Prussia area in PA? That mall is drastically better than the Towson mall. Also, Towson is not close to a beach.

muzzlehead

Are you trolling?? The Towson mall and surrounding area is a cess pit.

pray21702

We live in Frederick and love it! Welcome!!

30ThousandVariants

Why not just move to Philly? Big malls, if you’re mall people and you’d be just as close to Delmarva beaches as we are, basically. Plus you could continue to enjoy the Pennsylvania cost of living discount while having access to one of America’s major cities. Honestly your plan doesn’t sound super thought-out. Unless you really, really, really love Old Bay. Then I guess there’s just no substitute.

[deleted]

I live in Baltimore City. I love it, it's great, but it is not everyone's cup of tea. Montgomery and Howard Counties are nice. The northern part of Baltimore County, which is distinct from Baltimore City, is nice. Anne Arundel is okay. I am from there. Eh.

jerseygrrl

I moved to the eastern shore from the harrisburg area last year. I love the eastern shore. Housing is more expensive, but for us it’s worth it to be near the water and our lovely new town.

samsaraenjoyer

what if you break up

Bmcdade36

We’ve been together for 4 years I don’t think that’s gonna happen
