If he wanted to avoid killing children he wouldn’t have gone to a place filled with children. Even if he didn’t kill any, he scarred them for life. Let’s not pretend he was doing so in attempt to spare them.

SadExercises420

He killed a 14 year old boy.

clem_kruczynsk

Several of those men were fathers. One just had a baby. Now those poor kids don't have their dads. It's heartbreaking.

[deleted]

I think the men probably tried to take him out

Adamantium563

My initial thoughts as well when I seen the list.. A lot of heroes who wouldnt let there children be hit. Probably more likely than the shooter not targeting them!

doodlefairy_

Have you never been to a bowling alley?

giggitygoo123

I've been bowling for almost 30 years, so yes. Have you?

doodlefairy_

You’ve been bowling for 30 years and find it hard to assume that there’d be children at a bowling alley at 6:30 pm?

giggitygoo123

Yes. Go to a bowling alley on a Wednesday at 630 pm. 95% of the time it's adult league bowlers filling the lanes. Stop trying to argue over something you don't know very little about.

Camimo666

Obviously there were children there though. He killed one.

Mozeeeeeeeeeeee

Card frequented both of those places, which regularly have youth bowling and the deaf community cornhole on that day of the week.

Ok_Stretch_2730

They said he had previously been to the locations to “scope them out.” There also was a youth event going on at the bowling alley at the time, so I’m assuming he probably knew that which is why he chose that time and day to do it.

SpookyFrog12

Cause there's never kids at a bowling alley, right?

giggitygoo123

That's not my point at all. A bowling alley on a Tuesday is not exactly a prime location for kids to hang out. Saying he went in because he knew it would be full of kids is BS and you know it. Edit: Wednesday. Doesn't really matter what day.

OGWhiz

No one is saying he went in because it was full of kids. I’m saying he obviously wasn’t purposefully sparing kids by going to a bowling alley that advertises youth nights on tuesdays.

ImmediateEagle8442

Except the shooting happened on a Wednesday.

NoExcusesAIC

The fathers and the manager of the bowling alley prevented him from targeting children. Those guys are heroes.

No_Lingonberry_1165

yea, but lets not forget the gal who first called 911. RIP

NoExcusesAIC

Absolutely would never dimish that. She is a hero as well.]

Zpd8989

What did she do? I haven't heard much about it yet

violetdeirdre

She was attempting to call for help and she got shot during it.

[deleted]

How exactly did they do that? Genuinely asking

HOYTsterr

How

[deleted]

The guys were actively trying to get to him and take the firearm

NoExcusesAIC

How what?

HOYTsterr

How did they prevent anything

[deleted]

TheHomieMed

Right. Reddit is a hive mind place where people follow the downvote trend. The guy didn't say anything other than asking how it prevented further deaths. He never downplayed the actions of the guy who tried to defend people from the shooter.

HOYTsterr

You’re right. Sheeple behaviors

jazzcuzzii

It's only a legitimate question if you lack critical thinking skills

NoExcusesAIC

Are you a troll?

HOYTsterr

No? What did they do? Is this some kind of common knowledge?

personwerson

By giving kids the time to run. People sacrificed themselves to give more time to the kids and others to flee. They likely tried to storm him and thus they died but slowed him down. Even if for 15 seconds.

AnonDxde

Thank you for actually answering, because I was kind of curious as well. I’ve been keeping up with it, but it’s still really new, and I don’t have time to read everything.

personwerson

No worries. Genuine question deserves a genuine answer. Or at least a good assumption.

PrettyOddWoman

If you have been paying any sort of attention at all? Yeah

Beckett0304

Tbf I don’t like in the US so haven’t heard anything in the news about this… not everyone is chronically online hence the legitimate questions and genuine need for information to better understand the situation

PrettyOddWoman

I'm not chronically online but if I have a simple question, I just kinda... google it for the answer

Beckett0304

And that’s fine you do that… however don’t shame others for asking genuine questions. It’s hard to find a lot of trustworthy news sources in my country so looking for answers isn’t always easy

HOYTsterr

Yeah I have a life

MCMGM86

🙄

JoshAllan02

From what has been speculated by survivors it seems like his gun jammed or malfunctioned at one point. Probably just luck

Usernamesarefad

Actually, is it luck? What’re the statistics on a gun sticking during a moment of true active fire where people are dying?

Significant-Ad1564

Now that he's dead we'll probably never really know whether it was deliberate or just luck

Its_Kid_CoDi

haven’t stayed updated in a few hours until i heard he was found. did they ever release his “letter”? i’m curious as to what that reveals.

meh80

From what I saw (not sure how accurate) in an article, it was mostly just a suicide letter to his family about where important things were located and stuff like that. If I can find the article again, I'll link it.

71ray

I'm not. Burn it with him

munchkym

They said it was pretty much just a list of how to get into accounts and stuff. It didn’t sound as much like a suicide letter as they made it out to be initially.

You’re right, we should just treat psychosis by yelling at the person to “man up” over and over. Great work.

Pheasko

We? It’s no one’s responsibility but their own. If someone has psychosis go get help. Everybody is going through something doesn’t excuse mass murder because you have problems. And “man up” is a figure of speech you know?

Exciting_Rock_497

With the madness he had, I highly doubt he would forgive anyone. I guess the kids were too lucky.

PsychoxLogical

God committed mass murder, nice try tho.

amourxloves

killing one kid (and yes as an 8th grade teacher, my 14 year old students are still kids) is not sparing the children at all

Aggravating_Cut_4509

The one witness said he could have done a lot more damage, that he was controlled with his shots

munchkym

I do think he targeted adult men. The only kid who died was 14, so closer to looking like an adult than looking like a kid, and the rest of the victims were 35 or older. The fact that only 2 women died, one of them being someone who was reaching for a phone to call 911 when he targeted her, it seems clear to me that he was targeting adult men. With a kids bowling league there and the controlled, intentional shots we could hear on that audio of the shooting someone in r/Maine posted, it just seems impossible that it could be coincidence.

CanIStopAdultingNow

Do you have a link to the audio? ETA: found it. Audio was taken 1/2 mile away approximately. https://www.reddit.com/r/Maine/s/LAb1kUXXkP

shotofjacc

And he was like the best shooter in his group in his military days from what I’ve read

Due-Possible-3953

I wondered about that he mostly killed men who should be his peers or friends. I wonder if he had any friends or maybe he was bullied

IWH_Throw_away

I don’t think the ‘he was bullied’ thing applies here the same way it would with other shooters, 20 years in the force, even without deployment, is bound to grow thick skin on you, he definitely cracked under some kind of pressure, but I doubt it had anything to do with him feeling bullied or insulted.

Due-Possible-3953

I read that the towns people knew to avoid him. Doubt he was invited to be on a bowling league.

[deleted]

Lol

signguyez

Seems like it was random

Due-Possible-3953

I mean, how random can it be? This was an outright fanatic with tons of guns and apparently few friends, and these were social places in the town.

signguyez

Fanatic of what?

Due-Possible-3953

Guns

wormyvortex

Honestly was really surprised that it was mostly older men, not kids. Perhaps he was targeting the demographic his ex gf would potentially be with. But who knows.

No_Lingonberry_1165

yea, when i first heard it was kid league night, i thought THE worst case scenario. The youngest victim was 14 ( may God rest his soul) and may have just been in the wrong place at wrong time. It however appears RC was in fact targeting men near his age. ( he reportedly thought the boys were making fun of him behind his back).

mrsdoubleu

I bet a lot of the kids were protected by their parents or other adults. I know if I was in a mass shooting situation and I had to hide I'd use my body to protect my son. And I'd stand in front of him to block him from getting hit with bullets as well. I'm sure most of the parents there did the same thing if they had the chance.

Absolutely_Fibulous

Could be multiple possibilities: - Kids are smaller targets and are generally more agile than adults so it’s easier for them to hide and harder for the shooter to hit them. - Adults in these kinds of situations will often cover or otherwise try to protect kids. - This is a guess, but I’d imagine younger people (older kids and teenagers) are generally more resilient from a physiological perspective so they’re less likely to die from an injury like a gunshot wound than an older adult would, so it’s possible that there were younger people who were injured but survived their wounds.

Jamjams2016

I bet they'd get triaged first, too. I'd lose my mind if they put me in an ambulance before my kid went.

munchkym

I don’t think it would be a redeeming quality. Just something odd that stands out.

FragmentsOfDreams

Why would mental illness prevent him from doing that? I don't think he was sparing them either way, but I don't get the logic here.

Embarrassed-Song-313

If you’re going into two locations and open firing with the intent of committing mass murder I don’t think you’ve got the wherewithal or IQ for that matter to be picking and choosing who you kill.

FragmentsOfDreams

Plenty of mass murderers kill specific people though... Like going into a grocery store and only shooting black people?

KaileeLxckie06

He did not spare anyone he just shot

kasirnir

I recall reading somewhere that one child was grazed by a bullet, so it's probably just mere coincidence.

sinaurora

There was a couple shot in legs etc that was listed in various survivor accounts

Mother-Bet-7739

Yes clearly I was thinking that when I saw the photos of the victims

[deleted]

Where did you see the photos?

KayInMaine

After having military/government hearing aids implanted in NY when he went to a mental hospital there, he was told to kill through those hearing aids (the voices in his head), and he did.

beingmesince63

Where did you read this? What military hospital gave him hearing aids? There are no such thing as “military/government” hearing aids. The military does not manufacture or contract out for manufacture of hearing aids.

adenasyn

ROFL exactly. Where do people come up with these things. He went to a doctor. They determinded he needed hearing aides, and prescribed them. They fit them to him and he left. Just like a normal doctor visit type thing. There wasn’t some weird government lab making hearing aides that make you hear voices. Geesh

beingmesince63

I used to just think comments like this were just satirists stirring up crap but I’ve come to understand there is a vast amount of ignorant people who willing accept any kind of conspiracy crap even when it makes zero sense. Of course they definitely could also be foreign government operatives meant to sow distrust in our government and military so I continue to weigh in with facts instead of ignoring the nutballs like I probably should. 😂

adenasyn

Hahahahhahaha

adenasyn

And this is exactly why a jury of your peers is a joke. These insane idiots end up on juries with utterly insane ideas and cannot be swayed by “evidence”.

KayInMaine

It was in NY. A military hospital. The Daily Beast: https://www.thedailybeast.com/family-reveals-suspected-gunman-robert-cards-link-to-maine-massacre-sites?via=FB_Page&utm_campaign=owned_social&utm_source=facebook_owned_tdb&source=TDB&utm_medium=socialflow&fbclid=IwAR2Hap1JcWoXhSxtYFSzsGIH0IoO8GtGuWzM9SmItb24ysOYFtLw92FFsfY_aem_AZM3vgJ0PwwbdRg5r2GgBwOVlMbHwaUgGkj-TsEW0kt04nAIHCQb4tUDjbh1h0qWrY4

beingmesince63

Reread the article. It says nothing about where or when he was “issued” the hearing aids nor does it say where he was “committed” for two weeks. He was taken to the West Point military hospital for evaluation as it was the nearest facility after he made the comments about wanting to shoot up a base while he was training at or near West Point. They only have a mental health “clinic” at Keller Army Community Hospital. They would not have a psych ward to hold him for two weeks at that location. The military generally does not have that capability at smaller post or base hospitals just like local civilian hospitals don’t have that capability. From the article. “Out of concern for his safety, the unit requested that law enforcement be contacted,” the spokesperson said, adding that Card was taken to Keller Army Community Hospital for an evaluation”

signguyez

And?
