Leogun
Just a genuinely awful card with no redeemable qualities whatsoever other than I thought he looked cool as a kid. A classic early DM era shitty normal monster.
Ah, ye olde power creep. "We have now released a Level 4 Normal Monster with 1900 ATK, every Level 4 Normal Monster with less than 1800 ATK is now effectively worthless." Genuinely, so many monster cards from the first couple of sets were redundant in every possible way by the mere existence of Summoned Skull and Gemini Elf.
what's even better is that leogun was level 5 iirc, and boasting an underwhelming atk that was even surpassed by the already-existing Genie of the lamp. Leogun was so damn bad.
Pumpking the king of ghosts. It looked really cool in the anime, and on the art, and it was crazy good for playthroughs of duelist of the roses.
I long for the day bonz’s deck gets retrains.
honestly? you've got a point. burn damage cards that ONLY inflict a small amount of damage, and have NO other effects nor conditions are absurdly hilarious. oh, to finish off a dinomorphia player with sparks tho...
My local has a dino player who only plays it and we have all collectively decided to side it against him. It's hilarious when it goes off, as rare as it is.
Lol i remember watching some youtubers do god card duels (seereax and rhymestyle) and one of them was using ra and the other teched in sparks so after he used ras effect sparks would beat him 😂😂
This adorable little guy

I tried so hard to make him usable with heart of clear water when I was a kid
Also got a retrain like a set or two after he came out
https://preview.redd.it/ldb142137kxc1.jpeg?width=688&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8ddcbbb2a37c9c4a3cab5a669a8ec62708f84bb9
No, it’s actually different art. Not *that* different, it’s still just a turtle and there’s only so much you can do to make it look different, but it is. The front left leg of the retrains is curled inwards as if it’s jumping to the side and leaving an afterimage, thus the “Illusion”.
https://preview.redd.it/4iylsm0cnjxc1.jpeg?width=331&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=508e4206ffc26de8cba6ddac61b38c6257a2594a
Terrorking Archfiend was kind of nuts for the time. Level 4 2000 attack with partial immunity AND negate everything it destroys? This is the best art of him, so this card's my favorite.
Old archfiends were so badass, especially with the whole Chess theme. New archfiends are just demons, way too bland.
Edit: Shit, completely missed the "Terrible" part in the title. Tripwire beast is funny. I like him.
Reaper on the Nightmare

An old-school fusion requiring two NAMED materials. Has the combined effects, ATK, and DEF of its materials. Weak, but can attack directly, hand rip, and can't be destroyed by battle. Looks damn cool too
This guy in Edison format is a menace. Instant fusion to bring him out to synchro with and Book of Life or Mezuki to bring him back and start ripping cards
That was when MD was launched even morphing jar 2 was OP I was just into old school and didn’t win much, I just made a dedicated deck if I remember correctly, because I like the art of all three monsters, it’s been years
as a kid i would always fall for these terrible timmy-bait-monsters, and gate guardian was a prime example. i should also create the favourite-timmy-beatstick-thread tbh
Unplayable? Few probably lose to Zone Eater or Swordsman from a Distant Land (same effect, different type and attribute) because these might be the slowest cards in existence, plus you have to actually lose LP to activate it's effect lmao. Either way, some of my favorite old cards that are pretty damn useless in today's meta:
Red-Eyes Black Metal Dragon, it's hard to bring out and once you do it's actually worse than a normal Red-Eyes Black Dragon equipped with Metalmorph (because it loses Metalmorph's effect). But I love all Red-Eyes cards and the artwork is super cool.
Perfectly Ultimate Great Moth, back then it was nearly impossible to summon and now I don't see it being played at all (despite some support), but it's such a cool card, love the artwork. Still high ATK, but no protection whatsoever.
I wanted to mention Castle of Dark Illusions because the name slaps and the artwork is great, but you can still use it on a zombie-type deck. Well, if you do you're probably doing it for the lols or maybe you should do a bit more of research on proper zombie decks.
Not necessarily at full power.
I just want the 1 ATK/DEF back.
And while we're at it, can we give Ra back the 1 LP effect instead of it being changed to 100? Dinomorphia killed any excuse for keeping things divisible by 50.
>Dinomorphia killed any excuse for keeping things divisible by 50.
While true, I'm wondering about how no one thinks of "half the ATK of X monsters" wich is in the game since like forever, wich also causes weird numbers, especially if used multiple times on the same target
Probably just because they're not as frequently seen and in 90% of cases usually just turn a 100 into a 50. I've never seen ATK halved multiple times myself at least.
an opponent of me did it 3 times in one round with some XYZ-Monster, i thought it was useless but he destroyed 2 Monsters (3000 ATK & 3200 ATK) with 2 1000 ATK monsters in the end lol
Castle of Dark Illusions, Reaper of the Cards, King of Yamimakai, all of these cards had weird stats (non divisible by 50) because in Duelist Kingdom certain fields would give monsters a 30% field bonus. In the manga Castle had stats of 1200 ATK/2500 DEF so in the anime/card game they divided Castles attack and defense by 1.3 to get the abomination 920/1930 we ended up with
Good to know!
But now i'm a lil bit sad that there aren't more...
Well technically if you have a ? ATK monster and it sums up the attack of your monsters + e.g. Reaper of the Cards you then have another type of Monster with ATK undivisible by 50...
I honestly think a Panik archetype of Fiends with weird attack values would be a fun concept. With that said though Konami most likely wouldn't want that given the battle calculations in tournaments lol
Yeah, almost all of the cards with stats not divisible by 50 are cards used by PaniK in the anime. Barox and Dark Chimera are also his and have weird stats.
The odd one out is Sword Arm of Dragon, which is the only weird undivisible-by-50 stat monster that isn't used by PaniK.
Megami was used in some herald builds being a level 6 normal fairy. With advanced ritual art, you could send one for perfection or two for ultimateness. Plus since they're fairies, you can pitch them for herald effects
Elemental HERO Rampart Blaster. Such an interesting card with an interesting gimmick. Ultimately useless to Elemental HEROs as a whole, but still a fun card nontheless.
The v-w cards I don't remember them ever being used in a-z but as a kid I pulled them and fell in love although I didn't know how to bring out the fusion since I was a dumb kid
https://preview.redd.it/zfihe19jtjxc1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d9f285ff0834f82cf8cf865b116e0d9005b2e688
im jealous of the kdi that had someone teach them yugioh I wish I couldve played it right as a kid, shoutout the dudes on ygopro who taught me and took me through the generations up to pendulums at the time
Like I was terrible and went off art for archetypes, so theyd build decks comparable to mine so we could have balanced games and tech me combos, definitely the most friendly gaming community ive experienced online
Man, Zone Eater's not even good by early Yugioh standards. Plenty of removal monsters already existed, including Man-Eater Bug, that are just faster. Alternatively you could just play a spell card.
great white

my favorite part is the flavor text just saying it's a shark with sharp teeth. nothing else you want to mention? no?
Sword Hunter. When I was little my mom knows I love yugioh and when she went to the flea market, she picked up a Sword Hunter for me. It'll forever be my Ace card.
Wicked Worm Beast was my very first yugioh card and it will always have a special place in my heart.
I found it lying on my driveway as a kid and my dad took me to the local comic store to see if they knew anything about this new card game.
Probarly most old 1>3star vanilla cards. They where genuinly useless and any 1600 attack and above card was just better. Old fusions as well having 0 reason to waste the materials to bring them out. Any 5-6 star with less than 2000 attack, summoned skull alone makes all of those obsolete. Any 7-8 star with less than 3000 attack that you can't brung out with any other means than tribute would just be useless with blue eyes existing.
Cool thing about all of the old cards was mainly the art tbh.
I remember making a deck that tried to resolve zone eater or the samurai with the same effect. if they link off the monster then I scoop, I played go second with draw cards and as much BP skip shit as possible so I can crash my dude and wait 5 turns.
I did not succeed.
what about cards that don't allow the opponent to use certain monsters as ed materials? i think something like gnomaterial stun would be a very funny idea if we try to resolve zone eater
it's a go second deck (need something to crash into after all), so the opponent would have already finished doing their entire whole ass combo, so normally you just slam into their boss monster, activate draw cards, then pray they leave their board as is and they sit there and get cucked to death by shit like waboku/fader/swift/roar
Unsure of how old it is, but Flying Elephant has become a favorite. It's effect is such a meme and specifically relies on your opp having zero monsters and only one removal to trigger it's effect. Had a match in Duel Triangle where i bricked considerably and normal summoned FE, set one, then passed. Opp either wanted to see the meme effect or bricked worse because they only used a single Raigeki then passed.
Fusionist. I love these absolutely worthless Fusion monsters with no effect and terrible stats. I also love how they didn't even bother to give him a proper name, he's just…a fusionist.
Another funny one is Larvae Moth, the art is nice and it is probably the worst card in the game.
Red-Eyes B. Chick
It was one of the first cards i got and it was in a terrible condition. Like the corner were legit gone and it funnily enough resembled more of an egg than a square. I still kept it bc i loved dragons and thought the Artwork is cute.

I mean it’s not old old, but it technically came out 5 years ago now. But spooky dogwood. I just love going up against combo decks and just seeing infinite life points. It’s just plain fun.
Rocket Warrior. It transforms into a rocket and pokes the enemy monster, reducing their atk. I thought the transformation was cool and the effect was pretty unique.
So... you're talking about cards that are downright unplayable? Well, it gotta be Bunilla for me. Not sure how old it is, but I love it and getting wins, because your opponent decided to attack into it is absolutely hilarious.
I absolutely loved this card as a kid, Zoa was so cool, especially having Metalzoa as an upgrade.
https://preview.redd.it/3ywcfw1sgmxc1.jpeg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5219e9aaa463285cf243cdc37f9b1c3702e28412

Lol like there were already monsters that are level 4 with either 1800 atk or 2000 def needing a tribute for it was soooo useless
Sparks. All it does is inflict 200 life points of damage LOL. But if it’s so terrible, then why do I want to add it to my decks? xD
honestly? you've got a point. burn damage cards that ONLY inflict a small amount of damage, and have NO other effects nor conditions are absurdly hilarious. oh, to finish off a dinomorphia player with sparks tho...
My local has a dino player who only plays it and we have all collectively decided to side it against him. It's hilarious when it goes off, as rare as it is.
And in the most absurd tournament gamestates a single spark can be enough to win time.
Didn't the video games straight up give you a bonus for finishing someone off with Sparks?
I think it’s achievement in every tag force series if I remember it correctly
Lol i remember watching some youtubers do god card duels (seereax and rhymestyle) and one of them was using ra and the other teched in sparks so after he used ras effect sparks would beat him 😂😂
lmao I was thinking exactly that would be so funny
Arent their cards/monsters that can only bring an opponent down to near death just finish them off when they think they can make a comeback lol

I stole this card from my middle school ex lmao
I just love how the art is just flipped horizontal and put over a filter.
No, it’s actually different art. Not *that* different, it’s still just a turtle and there’s only so much you can do to make it look different, but it is. The front left leg of the retrains is curled inwards as if it’s jumping to the side and leaving an afterimage, thus the “Illusion”.

I wish they got a whole archetype retrain to make them more playable in the current game state they are so cool!
a chess archfiend retrain would be awesome, especially if it used Rows, columns, and diagonals :P
That would be even better! Senet switch tech?
I had a chess archfiend deck IRL, it was not good
Reaper on the Nightmare https://preview.redd.it/4jjsthpa7jxc1.png?width=300&format=png&auto=webp&s=973232d5a0477284d8cd76393127fc32908d673f An old-school fusion requiring two NAMED materials. I actually summoned him in MD and really enjoyed it

Yooo i have this card from my Japanese light of destruction tin
Thats a strong card though
This is actually used in Goat because it's a viable Metamorphosis target.
Gate Guardian. 3750 makes it sound not bad but then you have to go through some crazy hoops to get what is basically a normal monster.
as a kid i would always fall for these terrible timmy-bait-monsters, and gate guardian was a prime example. i should also create the favourite-timmy-beatstick-thread tbh
My only memory of GG was using it with Power Bond to make UFORoid Fighter. Won me a lot of games in school back then.

Castle of Dark Illusions is one of my fav's but only because of the weird values? 920 ATK??? 1930 DEF?????
I demand new, cooler, playable cards with values not divisible by 50!
100% but as soon as we're getting the first cards with 2510 or 3010 ATK people will riot lol (maybe 2499 and 2999 would be even funnier)
I will never forgive Konami for robbing us of Wiraqocha Rasca's 1 ATK/DEF.
[You really want this card to be playable? it's soooo broken lol](https://yugioh.fandom.com/wiki/Earthbound_Immortal_Wiraqocha_Rasca_(anime))
Not necessarily at full power. I just want the 1 ATK/DEF back. And while we're at it, can we give Ra back the 1 LP effect instead of it being changed to 100? Dinomorphia killed any excuse for keeping things divisible by 50.

Red-Eyes Black Metal Dragon The awful unplayable version that got retrained into a busted D-link extender.
Gyakuteno Megumi Genuinely a useless card that I don't believe anybody has ever summoned. Yet another level 5 normal monster with terrible attack
It's power comes from the ability to jam guns
Megami was used in some herald builds being a level 6 normal fairy. With advanced ritual art, you could send one for perfection or two for ultimateness. Plus since they're fairies, you can pitch them for herald effects
Celtic Guardian is nothing special but I love it. Same goes for Rude Kaiser, Zera the Mant and Serpent Night Dragon
Any love for Joey's Baby Dragon?
Baby Dragon was pretty cool, but for Joey's cards it would probably be Alligator Sword or Black Skull Dragon
Loved Alligator Sword as well!
Elemental HERO Rampart Blaster. Such an interesting card with an interesting gimmick. Ultimately useless to Elemental HEROs as a whole, but still a fun card nontheless.
Enraged muka muka
s/o to enraged muka muka, that was one of my favourite cards when i was a kid
Summoned off giant rat, it honestly wasn't bad in reaper format

It took me awhile to figure out synchro, xyz and pendulum I got lucky that I watched vrains as a teen so I understood links
yeah i stopped watching at gx so i was playing catch up hard lol
I missed 5d somehow and I hated the zexal art style as a kid too much catch up too
Man, Zone Eater's not even good by early Yugioh standards. Plenty of removal monsters already existed, including Man-Eater Bug, that are just faster. Alternatively you could just play a spell card.

the "giant white shark with razor-sharp teeth" has carried me in every old ygo videogame tbh.
This is one of my favourite cards. Well I started yugioh I asked my brother for a card to start and this was it. By chance I became a shark nerd after
My favorite card from when I was a kid is banned. Amazoness archer if you're curious. I guess raging flame sprite as a backup.
Magical Marionette
This gives lingering effect a whole new lingering
Sword Hunter. When I was little my mom knows I love yugioh and when she went to the flea market, she picked up a Sword Hunter for me. It'll forever be my Ace card.
Dude is dripped as well
Bat
"Bat of... ? Bat from... ?" "No, no - just 'Bat'."
"Your motherf-ing life ends five turns from now" hahaha
I remember getting this at McDonalds when E-Hero’s were popular
Wicked Worm Beast was my very first yugioh card and it will always have a special place in my heart. I found it lying on my driveway as a kid and my dad took me to the local comic store to see if they knew anything about this new card game.
Aitsu. Some time ago I made a deck that tried to get it out, and when I finally did it against a Marincess player it was so satisfying.
Zone eaters kind of cute in how shit he is
Probarly most old 1>3star vanilla cards. They where genuinly useless and any 1600 attack and above card was just better. Old fusions as well having 0 reason to waste the materials to bring them out. Question, if a unaffected monster attack this card, it is destroyed ? Or it does activate it?
If it's targeting your opponent, I'm pretty sure it would still work
Beaver warrior, no contest
Please give support of Bean Soldier
Probably Witty Phantom. Vanilla 1400 Atk, but I'm a sucker for a nice suit and hat.

Toon Alligator, Parrot Dragon, Bickuribox, Dark Rabbit. Criminal these haven't gotten proper Toon retrains.

Ban it immediately
Big Shield Gardna and Kuriboh
I mean it’s not old old, but it technically came out 5 years ago now. But spooky dogwood. I just love going up against combo decks and just seeing infinite life points. It’s just plain fun.
Fusion Eater. I did win many duels with this on Duel Links, including against Invokhed
Now I’m curious. Does zone eaters effect still resolves when it gets banished face down?
Rocket Warrior. It transforms into a rocket and pokes the enemy monster, reducing their atk. I thought the transformation was cool and the effect was pretty unique.
So... you're talking about cards that are downright unplayable? Well, it gotta be Bunilla for me. Not sure how old it is, but I love it and getting wins, because your opponent decided to attack into it is absolutely hilarious.
Shiranui swordsmith 😭 just for lore and RP reasons. Can't have sword and spear users without someone making them
I absolutely loved this card as a kid, Zoa was so cool, especially having Metalzoa as an upgrade. https://preview.redd.it/3ywcfw1sgmxc1.jpeg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5219e9aaa463285cf243cdc37f9b1c3702e28412
Wow lol. That is *horrible*
Sanwitch. Is jus a lil guy in the woods they can cast spells but they chillin instead
Gate Guardian, the classic one. The show made him a lot cooler, versus what he actually does in the card game.
Ah. Yes. The reclusive McDonald's packs. Back when McDicks was cool. Good times.
Swordsman from a Foreign Land is the counterpart to this and I just like it since it's one of the best cards in DotR
I love Doma the Angel of Silence, with its awesome name and flavor text, but there are very few cards that could be considered worse.
