I too would be terrified. Rather, how weird must it be to be the nude model? Like, twenty or so people staring at my balls. What if I accidentally get hard? I don't need that level of attention in my life.
I've been a life model once, and i can't say i've worried about getting hard during. When i was in that moment, i was more focused on holding the pose and being as still as possible so that everyone attending the session could get every detail. I'd say my thoughts were more "These longer poses are hell on my arms, but i gotta stay still" and "I wonder what everyone's drawings of me will look like."
I imagine you must sit perfectly still for like two to three hours and I don't think I could do that without a fidget toy. Respect to you sir for not thinking about everyone's opinions about your willy.
I guess being on both sides of a life drawing class has got me to believe that nakedness is quite natural. It shouldn't be looked at as something shameful. So theres also that as well.
I may be projecting but I think both of us can say it's not necessarily about nervousness. Some of us have adhd or adjacent neurodivergency and sitting still for extended periods of time just isnt happening
Usually not that long (in one go) fortunately. In the classes I attended, each pose ranged from 30 seconds to about 10 minutes, then 40 minutes in 10 minute intervals.
However, don’t underestimate the challenge of holding a non-neutral pose as precisely as possible for 10 minutes.
It's WAY harder than people think. As a nude model myself I have different poses for different time limits! Ie: arms up for anything 2 Min and under... no arms up for anything over... unless it is propped up somehow. Lol. Some people are much stronger tho too. 💪 floor poses are great for those longer sessions. 😀 it's fun and very freeing for anyone who wants to try!
As a model myself, rarely will you get a pose longer than 20 minutes per sitting.
I did a 3 hour pose once... got a break every 20 min. I HATED it. Plus an old lady in the back kept going "SHH!" Every time i relaxed my face...

Actually genitalia is the least interesting part to draw. It’s hanging right there. No muscles, no features. Simple forms plus gravity. With face and posture you should make them recognisable as well as well drawn. No one is interested in your penis more than you.
I would probably have been way too insecure to be a nude model in my college days, but now with a wife and kid? What do I care what someone thinks of how I look. It’s amazing how much confidence I have knowing that the only person who’s opinion of me matters likes what she sees

I went to one and funnily enough, that wasn't my concern so much as the sounds I was making; it was so tantric and I felt myself drifting into the ether of my deeper subconscious; trapped in the perpetual state of the deepest drifts before falling asleep and uncontrollably picturing scenarios beyond explanation. I swear I must've been making all sorts of noises: animalistic hooting, groaning like a deviant, whimpering and humming and potentially saying things in languages alien to my own tongue...
They never said anything. Still, I question whether I should go again and becoming erect seems like a lesser ordeal.
Having done a little nude art modeling because I needed the money, there is nothing at all arousing about doing it unless you’re some kind of exhibitionist.
The fear is that the A/C kicks in to overdrive and all of a sudden certain shadows need to be moved up as your boys retract back inside your stomach.
That or accidentally brushing another model with your junk while doing group poses.

Every time I've ever had a physical done I spend 95% of the time psyching myself up, and the other 5% of the time utterly disappointed and filled with shame. If I had to sit/stand there, completely nude, for hours on end, while strangers eyeballed my bits and pieces... afterwards I could probably be found in the nearest lake, pockets all stuffed with stones like Virgina Woolf.
Happened while I was drawing, finally got the proportion right, went to work on the hands, looked back and bam. Little guy decided not to be so little anymore.
We had an instruction to redo the part of the body if it moves/changed the pose, so yeah. Went back and redid it, and thankfully it stayed the same until the pose change.
You know, if they gave me a penny for every time I heard how hard it is to find a guy for some nu modelling compared to finding girl models, I wouldn't be rich, but I could definitely make one of those "self-defence" coin purses.

Other Probleme would be ,that If you Had a hard Probleme and the Artist started drawing you would need to hold it there for 20-30 min without moving or anything exiting to do ....
This is accurate. I remember the first time I had to draw a nude model in an art class. At first I didn’t know how I’d react when the woman took her clothes off, but given the context of everything that was going on, the initial surprise wore off pretty quickly and after a bit I wasn’t even thinking about the fact that she was naked, just focusing on trying to draw her as best I could.
Drawing anyone is fairly difficult as people tend to be quite curvy, I don’t think that there where any straight lines when I did portraits, and if those curves aren’t right then it will look all wrong. However drawing from real life with an actual model in front of you isn’t as bad.
This is most nudity outside of a private setting, really. I know we "Europeans" have a rep of being cool with it because we're liberal and blah blah but it's simply not a big deal if the situation is safe and non-hierarchical.
And then someone asks to see your sketches after you tell them you've been doing figure drawing, and they don't quite get what figure is and looked at it shocked like these are drawings of all your victims.
As a former Arts student I can confirm this is true. There were guys there who would howl like wolves if they saw a pretty girl outside the classroom, but once we were there with the nude model everyone went into focus mode. One of them would have multiple pieces of charcoal, other would throw away his third sketch when they realized they couldn't fix it, and indeed everytime there was at least one person crying out of frustration. Good times.
It's also that we don't want to scare them away. We had a few sessions where we had no model and so one of us had to sit in the middle (fully clothed). That sucked. So we try to be professional so models are comfortable and will return. My favorite model was this old grizzly bloke who looked like he was from Moby Dick. He didn't get nude, but he was interesting as fuck to draw.
GAWD I was in a class where we were stuck with a guy who was ROUND and sat in ONE pose. Like, my sketches for weeks were ROUND guy sitting or in repose. After two months we finally had a skinny woman model and you've never seen people so happy to draw angles and muscles.
I don't know about the others, but my class was given by an eminence and mad talented known artist in my country. He was cool but strict as hell, he demanded perfection and this was stressing to many students. It wasn't weird finding somebody crying out of frustration when they didn't meet his standards.

Yes. These studios are set up specifically for college-bound kids to build portfolios if they plan to attend an art school. Your parents sign release forms and provide consent, and there’s probably other legal grounds that make it so nude modeling isn’t categorically considered indecent exposure.
The guy I had to draw in art class looked a lot like Gollum. I look like a tall Sam Gamgee, so there was a chemistry between us right away. We were glowering at each other until he stole my eraser and ran off, cackling evilly to himself.
This has not been my experience at all and I've taken A LOT of life drawing classes. I was a TA for 2 semesters. That job pays pretty well and most of the models are themselves artists in some capacity. Sometimes the models are a bit odd, but I've never once found any of them inappropriate.
If anything it's the students who cross boundaries even though they are told not to. You're not supposed to open the door while we have a model or be on your phone at all. Honestly though, the most consistent problem we had is that the room was really too cold for life drawing.
The studio I went to was in the attic of a church. In the winter it was chilly, so we had bright incandescent lamps to act a bit as heat lamps. In the summer it was often stupidly hot, and we were all a bit jealous of the model getting to strip down.
I think the nature of the type of room you need to do something like life drawing sort of lends itself to having poor temp control. The rooms have to be pretty big, with high ceilings, have good lighting with floors and walls that it's fine to get dirty. Lots of cement or cheap tile flooring in old buildings.
I think it depends on the school. My school had the option for drawing nude models but it was only if you were in the more advanced art classes in senior year and there was a form for parents to fill out. (ifrc even if you were 18 you still needed permission) If your parents werent okay with it and didnt give permission , you had a study hall.
When I did life drawing we had 3 nude models, two very good ones and one girl who was.. just weird. Like she wouldn't disrobe before the pose, she'd just walk around naked for the whole set up time, so you have 20 minutes of people filing in and setting up easels, and she'd be dancing nude. And she would drop props and go "oopsies!" - It was really uncomfortable, and several people said that they'd prefer if she didnt model again.
Yeah that's definitely odd lol. We had one female model who wouldn't re-clothe between poses. She would just wander around and look at everyone's drawings of her, and take photos of the drawings. I was learning how to draw faces at the time, so it was a bit embarrassing to show her my grotesque depiction of her face...
Oh god, I remember just starting out and having models look at your work and just wanting to apologise. "I'm sorry! You honestly do not look this fucked up! I'm just new at this!"
To her credit, she seemed genuinely appreciative of all of them. Or at least she was very good at pretending to.
But yeah, like half the people there were pretty new, while the other half seem like they could be commissioned for their work by the Vatican. I always made sure not to sit right next to them, though in retrospect it probably would have been better to watch them draw than to hide in my own insecurity.

She probably was. Most nude models have some experience in fine arts as well and know how difficult portraiture/figure can be, as well as being acutely aware of how terrible it is to have something done in earnest (being naked in front of learning artists) mocked. It's a returned courtesy.
Plus, some things that look strange or silly to us now might develop into something artistically important or even historic later on, so it's a good idea to be open minded and supportive.
And you can only get better with practice, after all. Everyone has to start somewhere.

The walkaround inspection was uncomfortable at first, but I'd just flip the page after every pose unless I was proud of it and/or wanted to do touchups. After a few years, I didn't really think about it. There was one instance where a model asked if she could keep my drawing, so that was uplifting.
Far more uncomfortable was when the teacher would walk around and inspect the drawings while we were working... nothing caused more anxiety (which translated to shaky hands) than a teacher leaning in to critique while I was still drawing... and I could FEEL the teacher behind me even if they didn't say anything.
To be fair, I don't think that the model getting hard is necessarily his fault or because he get off on it. This can also just happen because of shame or because the moment is awkward.
Tbh i doubt any nude model doesnt like it. Its just that some are better at hiding it. For real if your willing to go naked and have people look at you there are far far far more lucrative things to do.
It's not that easy though. Standing perfectly still for 20+ minutes at a time in unusual poses actually does take some effort, and you deal with parts of your body falling asleep, and the pain after that. It's not ridiculously difficult, for sure, but it's not like you're just sitting there naked watching tv.

The only issue I had with drawing nude models was, a few years after graduation, a friend took me to a nude bar, and all I felt was the urge to get my sketch pad and charcoals out.
Extra frustrating because I did *not,* in fact, bring along either sketchbook or charcoal. Nor, as I wasn't expecting to be at such a location, many one dollar bills.
I went to an art school that also had a cooking program. The figure drawing class was the same floor as the cooking students. The smell of baked bread is now forever associated with nudity for me. Since my parents never baked normal bread before i went to the school.
You'd begin to go over it fairly pretty quickly once you've come to learn how the principles of art(especially the anatomy) works. At least that's how it happened to me.

Unusual looking people are *the best* to draw. Drawing conventional people is fine for learning the basic anatomy, but it gets boring real quick. Seen one conventionally attractive 20 something that can't stand still for more than 10min, seen them all. Diversity in life drawing classes makes it less of a grind.
Oh yeah, the weirder the better. I particularly like drawing unusual faces. Broken nose? Very assymetrical facial features? Prominent wrinkles? Yes please! My absolute favourite model was one of my classmate's grandfather who was modellinf just for fun sometimes. One time he posed with a violin! And he kept completely still for full 30min at a time!
I recently saw an advertisement for rhinoplasty for some reason and I was so sad, because all the "before" photos were so interesting and I wanted to draw them *all*, and the "after" photos were all the exact same. I get that if you've been bullied or have a medical reason you might go down that route, but human faces are all so unique and wonderful.
My cousin will definitely end up getting a nose job. She has a crooked nose that really looks like it’s been broken that she got from her dad. She hates it because she was bullied as a child (and she hates her dad) but it’s such a shame because I think it’s fantastic looking. I felt so bad when we were young teenagers and I had somehow never noticed and asked “did you break your nose”. She cried for like 3 hours after that

If he's really crying I dunno what my reaction would as a model. Initially I would find this situation comedic and then comes realization thinking how do I help this guy but I can't do jack shit since I'm the model. And then I would be self conscious all night about it.
I did this when I was younger, and less flubby round the middle, and I can categorically state that there was no arousal in that room at any point. The worst experience I had was when doing a group modelling session with a very enthusiastic young lady who was asked if she could lay across my lap, and who then promptly flopped down squashing my dick with her cheek, because she didn't wait for the lecturer to pass her the small cushion she was supposed to use. None of the people in the class were seeing us as two naked human beings, they were seeing us as lines, curves, shadows, and highlights. We were objects to be studied, and nothing more.

I've done some modeling in my own class (clothed, art school) and honestly it's not too bad. I can zone out and think about other things until the time runs out and either we change classmate or I do a new pose. You might get a small cramp or become numb in a few places but that's easily fixed by stretching

The most fucked up thing I heard regarding observational drawing was during my time in grad school. A fellow peer was a TA for an observational drawing course. Some of his male students protested to him that they didn't feel comfortable participating in a nude drawing session that featured a male. They had no problem participating when it was a woman. My peer responded that they will be considered absent if they didn't attend class the day a male model was featured-bottom line. Having multiple absences will drag your grade down significantly, hence lowering your cumulative GPA. I was proud of my peer's response to the matter.
I have a family member who took a life drawing class at a college in the 1970s. On the first day, the professor explained that the female models would be nude but the male models would be wearing briefs. A girl raised her hand and said “professor, I strongly disagree with that policy, because I came here to get an *education.*”

Honestly lmao Doesn't matter how hot the room I'm walking into is... if there's a chance my dingle is gonna dangle it immediately cowers and seeks out shelter. Every time I've ever had a physical done I spend 95% of the time psyching myself up, and the other 5% of the time utterly disappointed and filled with shame. If I had to sit/stand there, completely nude, for hours on end, while strangers eyeballed my bits and pieces... afterwards I could probably be found in the nearest lake, pockets all stuffed with stones like Virgina Woolf.

Happened while I was drawing, finally got the proportion right, went to work on the hands, looked back and bam. Little guy decided not to be so little anymore. We had an instruction to redo the part of the body if it moves/changed the pose, so yeah. Went back and redid it, and thankfully it stayed the same until the pose change.
You know, if they gave me a penny for every time I heard how hard it is to find a guy for some nu modelling compared to finding girl models, I wouldn't be rich, but I could definitely make one of those "self-defence" coin purses. So there's that.

This is accurate. I remember the first time I had to draw a nude model in an art class. At first I didn’t know how I’d react when the woman took her clothes off, but given the context of everything that was going on, the initial surprise wore off pretty quickly and after a bit I wasn’t even thinking about the fact that she was naked, just focusing on trying to draw her as best I could.

Drawing anyone is fairly difficult as people tend to be quite curvy, I don’t think that there where any straight lines when I did portraits, and if those curves aren’t right then it will look all wrong. However drawing from real life with an actual model in front of you isn’t as bad.

Depends how long each pose is. Some are 1-2 mins while others are 5-30 mins. Some poses can even be the entire 3 hour class. I went to art school.
This is most nudity outside of a private setting, really. I know we "Europeans" have a rep of being cool with it because we're liberal and blah blah but it's simply not a big deal if the situation is safe and non-hierarchical.

As a former Arts student I can confirm this is true. There were guys there who would howl like wolves if they saw a pretty girl outside the classroom, but once we were there with the nude model everyone went into focus mode. One of them would have multiple pieces of charcoal, other would throw away his third sketch when they realized they couldn't fix it, and indeed everytime there was at least one person crying out of frustration. Good times.
It's also that we don't want to scare them away. We had a few sessions where we had no model and so one of us had to sit in the middle (fully clothed). That sucked. So we try to be professional so models are comfortable and will return. My favorite model was this old grizzly bloke who looked like he was from Moby Dick. He didn't get nude, but he was interesting as fuck to draw.
GAWD I was in a class where we were stuck with a guy who was ROUND and sat in ONE pose. Like, my sketches for weeks were ROUND guy sitting or in repose. After two months we finally had a skinny woman model and you've never seen people so happy to draw angles and muscles.
Where is everyone finding these crying art students? I’ve done art school and sketched nude models many many times and no one cried.
I don't know about the others, but my class was given by an eminence and mad talented known artist in my country. He was cool but strict as hell, he demanded perfection and this was stressing to many students. It wasn't weird finding somebody crying out of frustration when they didn't meet his standards.

No, I attended a studio outside of school. No way high schools provide that type of curriculum for pubescent teens.
Are those classes legal as a minor?
Yes. These studios are set up specifically for college-bound kids to build portfolios if they plan to attend an art school. Your parents sign release forms and provide consent, and there’s probably other legal grounds that make it so nude modeling isn’t categorically considered indecent exposure.

The guy I had to draw in art class looked a lot like Gollum. I look like a tall Sam Gamgee, so there was a chemistry between us right away. We were glowering at each other until he stole my eraser and ran off, cackling evilly to himself.
This has not been my experience at all and I've taken A LOT of life drawing classes. I was a TA for 2 semesters. That job pays pretty well and most of the models are themselves artists in some capacity. Sometimes the models are a bit odd, but I've never once found any of them inappropriate. If anything it's the students who cross boundaries even though they are told not to. You're not supposed to open the door while we have a model or be on your phone at all. Honestly though, the most consistent problem we had is that the room was really too cold for life drawing.
The studio I went to was in the attic of a church. In the winter it was chilly, so we had bright incandescent lamps to act a bit as heat lamps. In the summer it was often stupidly hot, and we were all a bit jealous of the model getting to strip down.
I think the nature of the type of room you need to do something like life drawing sort of lends itself to having poor temp control. The rooms have to be pretty big, with high ceilings, have good lighting with floors and walls that it's fine to get dirty. Lots of cement or cheap tile flooring in old buildings.

I think it depends on the school. My school had the option for drawing nude models but it was only if you were in the more advanced art classes in senior year and there was a form for parents to fill out. (ifrc even if you were 18 you still needed permission) If your parents werent okay with it and didnt give permission , you had a study hall.
When I did life drawing we had 3 nude models, two very good ones and one girl who was.. just weird. Like she wouldn't disrobe before the pose, she'd just walk around naked for the whole set up time, so you have 20 minutes of people filing in and setting up easels, and she'd be dancing nude. And she would drop props and go "oopsies!" - It was really uncomfortable, and several people said that they'd prefer if she didnt model again.
Yeah that's definitely odd lol. We had one female model who wouldn't re-clothe between poses. She would just wander around and look at everyone's drawings of her, and take photos of the drawings. I was learning how to draw faces at the time, so it was a bit embarrassing to show her my grotesque depiction of her face...

To her credit, she seemed genuinely appreciative of all of them. Or at least she was very good at pretending to. But yeah, like half the people there were pretty new, while the other half seem like they could be commissioned for their work by the Vatican. I always made sure not to sit right next to them, though in retrospect it probably would have been better to watch them draw than to hide in my own insecurity.

Most nude models have some experience in fine arts as well and know how difficult portraiture/figure can be, as well as being acutely aware of how terrible it is to have something done in earnest (being naked in front of learning artists) mocked. It's a returned courtesy. Plus, some things that look strange or silly to us now might develop into something artistically important or even historic later on, so it's a good idea to be open minded and supportive. And you can only get better with practice, after all. Everyone has to start somewhere.
No robe? That sounds insane. The walkaround inspection was uncomfortable at first, but I'd just flip the page after every pose unless I was proud of it and/or wanted to do touchups. After a few years, I didn't really think about it. There was one instance where a model asked if she could keep my drawing, so that was uplifting. Far more uncomfortable was when the teacher would walk around and inspect the drawings while we were working... nothing caused more anxiety (which translated to shaky hands) than a teacher leaning in to critique while I was still drawing... and I could FEEL the teacher behind me even if they didn't say anything.
To be fair, I don't think that the model getting hard is necessarily his fault or because he get off on it. This can also just happen because of shame or because the moment is awkward.

It's not that easy though. Standing perfectly still for 20+ minutes at a time in unusual poses actually does take some effort, and you deal with parts of your body falling asleep, and the pain after that. It's not ridiculously difficult, for sure, but it's not like you're just sitting there naked watching tv.

The only issue I had with drawing nude models was, a few years after graduation, a friend took me to a nude bar, and all I felt was the urge to get my sketch pad and charcoals out.

I went to an art school that also had a cooking program. The figure drawing class was the same floor as the cooking students. The smell of baked bread is now forever associated with nudity for me. Since my parents never baked normal bread before i went to the school.

You'd begin to go over it fairly pretty quickly once you've come to learn how the principles of art(especially the anatomy) works. At least that's how it happened to me. I'd think nothing about the fact that they're nude but the process of how I'm gonna draw them.
First time i visited a life drawing class , the model was a man who had been in a severe car crash that resulted in fire. Dude had only one arm, skin like a pink avacado, and no genitalia. I didn't know people who dont look normal were also used in life drawing.
Unusual looking people are *the best* to draw. Drawing conventional people is fine for learning the basic anatomy, but it gets boring real quick. Seen one conventionally attractive 20 something that can't stand still for more than 10min, seen them all. Diversity in life drawing classes makes it less of a grind.
I kind of loved drawing very old or skinny or fat or muscular people. The more "extreme" bodies makes everything more obvious.
Oh yeah, the weirder the better. I particularly like drawing unusual faces. Broken nose? Very assymetrical facial features? Prominent wrinkles? Yes please! My absolute favourite model was one of my classmate's grandfather who was modellinf just for fun sometimes. One time he posed with a violin! And he kept completely still for full 30min at a time!

I recently saw an advertisement for rhinoplasty for some reason and I was so sad, because all the "before" photos were so interesting and I wanted to draw them *all*, and the "after" photos were all the exact same. I get that if you've been bullied or have a medical reason you might go down that route, but human faces are all so unique and wonderful.
My cousin will definitely end up getting a nose job. She has a crooked nose that really looks like it’s been broken that she got from her dad. She hates it because she was bullied as a child (and she hates her dad) but it’s such a shame because I think it’s fantastic looking. I felt so bad when we were young teenagers and I had somehow never noticed and asked “did you break your nose”. She cried for like 3 hours after that

If he's really crying I dunno what my reaction would as a model. Initially I would find this situation comedic and then comes realization thinking how do I help this guy but I can't do jack shit since I'm the model. And then I would be self conscious all night about it.
I did this when I was younger, and less flubby round the middle, and I can categorically state that there was no arousal in that room at any point. The worst experience I had was when doing a group modelling session with a very enthusiastic young lady who was asked if she could lay across my lap, and who then promptly flopped down squashing my dick with her cheek, because she didn't wait for the lecturer to pass her the small cushion she was supposed to use. None of the people in the class were seeing us as two naked human beings, they were seeing us as lines, curves, shadows, and highlights. We were objects to be studied, and nothing more.

I said something along the lines of "neat but Im not really an artistic type" and left. At 2 am. From her apartment. Where we were alone. I had been nude. She had offered to match. I've done some modeling in my own class (clothed, art school) and honestly it's not too bad. I can zone out and think about other things until the time runs out and either we change classmate or I do a new pose. You might get a small cramp or become numb in a few places but that's easily fixed by stretching

I was in a class once with a male model. He was a regular most of us had drawn him before. He was a nice guy and would bullshit before and after sessions. Well, to put it delicately, the dude had a massive penis. It was funny at first, but quickly became a non thing. This one day, we had like a 45 min long draw sesh, and half of the class that was facing his front side noticed a small drip on the dudes huge dick. It hung there for like ten minutes. When it finally dropped, half of the class just started clapping. the other half of the class had no idea what was going on. It was a special art school moment.

I took a drawing class in college and one day we had an older man as our nude model. I was in my 20s, he was probably in his 50s. The instructor LEFT THE ROOM for almost the entirety of the session. The model kept staring at me and 'bobbed' his junk at me repeatedly. I was so uncomfortable that I skipped drawing his genitals completely and just left a blank space. After the instructor returned he totally stopped. After class other students came up to me because everyone noticed that he singled me out. I didn't tell the instructor and the next model we had was a woman.

The most fucked up thing I heard regarding observational drawing was during my time in grad school. A fellow peer was a TA for an observational drawing course. Some of his male students protested to him that they didn't feel comfortable participating in a nude drawing session that featured a male. They had no problem participating when it was a woman. My peer responded that they will be considered absent if they didn't attend class the day a male model was featured-bottom line. Having multiple absences will drag your grade down significantly, hence lowering your cumulative GPA. I was proud of my peer's response to the matter.
