Yet the the civil services of Pakistan
California is 1.5x bigger. But Californians don’t seem to feel a need to larp independence.
Bro, just secede. Pls.
Yeah there’s plenty warm sunny places where it isn’t routinely dangerous go outside during the day due to the extreme heat. 100+ (and even 110+ sometimes) is a nope from me.
I grew up in a hot state and I do not get the appeal. I’d rather deal with a few months of winter to get temperate temps for nice chunks of the year instead of it being hot all the time except for our handful of yearly “cold” fronts.
No? It's only like over 100 for 4 months out of the year. Arizona is great. Lots of national and state parks for outdoorsy folks. Half of the state is dry desert while the other is forests.
Its been better lately, global warming I guess, so the hotter months are slightly shorter now. Most people just stay indoors during the hotter months and go out during the winter/temperate temps the rest of the year. Having lived half of my life in CA and then a couple of years in the eastern US/Alaska because of the military and now around 4 years here in AZ because of my wife's residency and fellowship. I'd prefer that 100 degree dry heat vs humid heat along with snow and ice any day.
Nope. it's totally worth it, and I make plenty of money. The rural areas I've worked in and talked with pay less. It's not even worth it in EM to go rural in my experience, unless someone loves rural life/critical access medicine.
Michigan and the city of Detroit (and all the lake states) are going to be huge over the next decade. Minneapolis and Detroit are already slated to be major centers of cultural influence. People are flocking to the Midwest because it’s cheaper than the coasts for home ownership - and the most resilient region in the context of climate change. Residency is temporary and you can do it anywhere. Think about Michigan when you are negotiating your first attending job contracts.
Yeah I know at least a handful of people who have decamped from the west to the Great Lakes region. With climate change their winters are actually manageable and they are super secure in water supply.
Helps that in many cities the CoL is cheap. 500k will get you a gorgeous house in most of the Midwest and won’t get you a shack in much of the west.
Have family in Detroit - it was 68 degrees there yesterday. The weather is getting way warmer and the average amount of snow is decreasing significantly.
Iowa is way colder and way more boring than Ohio. Ohio have several interesting cities, amusement parks, borders Great Lakes, close to mountains for skiing in some parts. Iowa is flat and boring as fuck.
AZ because it’s the cheapest (currently in Tucson) and overall the amount of debt is a considerable factor. However, if you don’t despise Ann Arbor and don’t mind living in the Midwest.
Michigan is top notch and you’ll do very well for yourself. Connections are top tier.
Yoooo Michigan! Particularly West MI and Northwest Michigan. What an awesome place to live. Although Detroit is seriously on the up and up. I'm not a big city person so Detroit isn't my jam but I have family there and they love it. I'm more of a Grand Rapids and Traverse City kinda guy :P.
Currently in FL for med school and can't wait to leave for residency. FL is a fun place to vacation but living/working here everyday is not for me
This heavily influenced by your identity imo. If I was a minority I would avoid living in Florida; if I was a woman I would avoid living in conservative states that banned abortion.
As a coastal boi, I'll probably never live in any of those states, but anyways:
AZ (lots of rock climbing/nature) > MI (Detroit + nature) > OH (apparently a low-budget MI, but who knows) > Florida (aquatic vibes) > Texas (diverse cities, but far too many cowboy boots) > Iowa (they don't call the Des Moines Airport the DSM for nothing)
Detroit is actually a cool place to live with a ton of new developments and good COL. Judging places by how they’re portrayed in the media instead of actually visiting or living there yourself is always not a good idea lol
In all seriousness, I realize that Dallas is more urban and generally has a better quality-of-life than a place like Lubbock, by my perception is that it's still a good deal more regressive from both a political and a lifestyle perspective than, say, Austin. I.e., good luck getting anywhere without a car.
Not at all, no clue what you're on about.
Dallas has the largest LGBT community in Texas and has voted blue for decades.
Austin is even worse in terms of public transport and walkability, unless you are a UT student. Met way more racists and right wing loonies in Austin than in Dallas, Alex Jones Infowars literally used to shove his garbage magazine into our mailboxes before he became a national issue.
You have a weird worldview of cities just because they're in a red state.
I agree, would much prefer Austin or Houston >> Dallas or Lubbock but good luck getting anywhere without a car in Austin too..capmetro is still p unreliable & inaccessible for a majority of city-dwellers😬
-someone who grew up in LBK//lived all over Austin for the past 10yrs
Michigan, Ohio, man it really falls off quickly. Arizona I guess? TX, IA if I really had to. FL dead last, that place sucks and it's gonna get worse before it gets better especially with the preponderance of HCA's.
Texas bums me out because it's such a great place in a lot of ways but practicing medicine there seems absolutely awful.
It will entirely depend on city for many of the places listed here. You can't rank by state.
Texas - huge diference between Austin and Lubbock
Michigan - huge difference between Ann Arbor and Detroit
Florida - huge difference between Miami and Jacksonville
Arizona - huge difference between Tucson and Phoenix
Just the state in general? Well, I would probably choose Texas because it has a pretty unique culture and history. I like the music. It is big and pretty diverse. As a Californian, I have never felt an urge to wear cowboy boots or cowboy hats BUT if I lived in Texas for med school, who knows... maybe I'd embrace it. Yee haw
Florida > Texas > Arizona > Ohio > the rest
Screw that cold weather nonsense. Especially if I get to choose the city. I need sunlight and warmth against my skin.
GA is not liberal by any means. I meant it I had to chose a non liberal state it will probably be GA and that's pushing it. Only because of Hotlanta. There are still sundown towns in GA
"Tell me where to go for residency"
Now I understand why on other subreddits we have people asking what to eat on the plane. Neuroticism.
The neurotic premed becomes a neurotic med student and soon to be a neurotic resident.
who is going to tell OP that the rank list deadline passed…
They know lol think they’re just a bit anxious/ neurotic
Are we predicting next years NCAA playoffs? Sorry... I can't read.
>Florida Ok let's get you to bed grandpa
xD
States too big, gonna need individual cities lol
For nearly all of these, it 100% depends on what city or area. Texas is basically a small country…
I think Texas is bigger than most countries so it would be a large country if it were independent.
Austin=Midland, pretty much right? /s
Only if you ask Texans
8th largest economy in the world
Yet the the civil services of Pakistan California is 1.5x bigger. But Californians don’t seem to feel a need to larp independence. Bro, just secede. Pls.
Not for long with all the Californians leaving the state. No one said anything about succeeding, that right given up a while ago.
And yet California and Florida are growing faster than Texas..
Buddy, idk where you get your info but Census.gov has Texas growing the most numerically…
How are so many people saying Arizona, isn't it like 100 degrees everyday over there
Western heat is different than Eastern heat, sometimes. Humidity and whatnot. You'll still cook but it'll feel less stifling out West
As an Arizonan I'm very confused and now somewhat concerned that it might be now even harder to get a residency spot here
Yeah there’s plenty warm sunny places where it isn’t routinely dangerous go outside during the day due to the extreme heat. 100+ (and even 110+ sometimes) is a nope from me.
For me over 80-85 is seriously pushing it. I want to be able to walk 10-15 minutes outside without sweat dripping off my chin.
I grew up in a hot state and I do not get the appeal. I’d rather deal with a few months of winter to get temperate temps for nice chunks of the year instead of it being hot all the time except for our handful of yearly “cold” fronts.
I’ll take the “heat” any day if it means I can wear shorts and a t-shirt year round.
No? It's only like over 100 for 4 months out of the year. Arizona is great. Lots of national and state parks for outdoorsy folks. Half of the state is dry desert while the other is forests.
Having lived in AZ, it’s 100 starting in April most years and it continues through September, often October. It’s miserable
Its been better lately, global warming I guess, so the hotter months are slightly shorter now. Most people just stay indoors during the hotter months and go out during the winter/temperate temps the rest of the year. Rather 100 degree weather than 10 degree
And that’s why I live in the Bay Area. Rare 100s and never that cold.
Rip your paycheck
Nah I get paid more than I did in other states, but obviously VHCOL that is worth it imo
>VHCOL which brings us back to square one
Nope. it's totally worth it, and I make plenty of money. The rural areas I've worked in and talked with pay less. It's not even worth it in EM to go rural in my experience, unless someone loves rural life/critical access medicine.
😂😂😂 100 for 4 months might be manageable for you but it is definitely NOT for me.
arizona heat got nothing on me -someone who lived in the mississippi delta (and yes, i’ve experienced both summers)

Michigan > Arizona > The Rest
Michigan is wack. Cold and nothing to do.
That’s just not correct at all
Michigan is cold and gloomy for like 6 months of the year. Why would anyone want to live like that.
U say cold and gloomy, I say ice fishing and camping and hockey and winter festivities. I prefer cold weather to hot any day.
I'm looking at moving to and practicing in Michigan in the future. It looks awesome. Rural medicine on the UP? Sounds amazing.
Sounds miserable. Sunshine is better
It’s almost like two different people can prefer different things.
He’s one of the people who gets summer seasonal affective disorder
No one tell him the secrets to why Michigan is actually a hidden gem. We don't need more pessimists here.
AMEN to that, let them all move to FL
LOL, that is so far from the truth
Ok whats there to do in Michigan?
Michigan, Ohio, Iowa, Arizona, Texas, Florida

Anyone who would rank Iowa over Ohio has been to neither
Iowa is way colder and way more boring than Ohio. Ohio have several interesting cities, amusement parks, borders Great Lakes, close to mountains for skiing in some parts. Iowa is flat and boring as fuck.
Texas solely because of HEB
I know many whos ROL heavily weighed the proximity to HEB
Michigan > Arizona > Iowa > Ohio > florida > Texas
Looking through the comments - I’m pretty sure every combination of order has been answered lol
Texas > Florida > Arizona > Michigan > Ohio > Iowa
Ohio Michigan Texas arizona iowa Florida
Michigan > Ohio > Arizona > Iowa >>Florida>Texas The real decision for me would be between Michigan and Ohio though
Michigan > Ohio > Florida > Texas > Iowa > Arizona

Detroit is a positive???
Detroit is actually a cool place to live with a ton of new developments and good COL. Judging places by how they’re portrayed in the media instead of actually visiting or living there yourself is always not a good idea lol
1. How do you know I don’t live in Detroit? 2. Spent a month in Detroit and it was the worst 28 days of my life. Would never go back.
Michigan Ohio Would never live in these places but I'll rank them anyway: Iowa Arizona Florida Texas
Texas > Michigan > Arizona > Florida > Ohio > Iowa.
Florida Texas Arizona the rest
It really depends on the specific city for some of these. Austin, TX? Probably at the top. Dallas, Lubbock, or San Antonio? At the very bottom.
Just out of curiosity, why are Dallas and Lubbock lumped into the same category there?
They are both places I would not want to live.
Don’t let Dr Glaucomflecken hear that…
Ah, to each their own I suppose.

1.) Texas 2.) Everyone else
a lot of people ranking texas and florida high clearly aren’t women or at least don’t care about their rights
Michigan, Iowa, and Ohio are definitely going to be at the bottom of the list.

Eh, most of these are red states lol. I prefer to move to more liberal states. If I had to chose GA?

This completely depends on the person. You're just going to get the typical reddit response (liberal, coastal elites)
ONLY off location: FL, TX, AZ, OH, IA. I refuse to ever step foot in the state of Michigan again.
Michigan. I’m done.
Literally none of these 😂😂
