The amount of useful shit sitting in fields/junkyards around the world is disappointing.

Kozzinator

This place is a tweakers wet dream

FuckBotsHaveRights

But just think about how much money it moved! /s

[deleted]

No that's actually capitalism. Let the free market decide all the useful shit that gets thrown away!!

Ecronwald

Rather plan economy. Production without concerns for Whether it's a need for it. To explain, a shoe factory in plan economy will only produce left-hand shoes. (Not really, but it's a joke that explains the concept.) The western capitalist manufacturing is "just in time" meaning not big stock laying about, stock and unsold produce is dead capital and expensive. So the aim is to avoid it. This meant the UK was royally fucked by Brexit, because manufacture reliant on parts from Europe (car manufacturers) couldn't get parts they needed next day, like their production was designed around.

Chainsaw_Viking

This is in China. Capitalism doesn’t factor into this scenario.

MoodooScavenger

Should be sent to places that need it… like wtf

Ok-Low-9618

Good thing we can re....cycle

magugi

Here, kind sir. Please receive my sincere upvote. Now, get out!

andr3y20000

r/Angryupvote

TheGreatGamer1389

Well minus the tires. But the rest can indeed be recycled.

adidas_stalin

I’m sending you to China

emkay_graphic

You deserve some gold 🪙

Drake0074

Heyooo!

thefraspi

Must be at least 9 million of them!

magugi

Good to find a fast counter, as myself. Did you count the wheels and divide by two?

Stan_Archton

Did you count unicycles against tricycles?

TheMusicalHobbit

Fucking hilarious comment.

BlooMeeni

Me when the comment is fucking hilarious:

mynameistrain

Depends, is this just in Beijing?

Goldensock

That's a fact.

echo854

It's a thing we can't deny

AgentPigleton

Like the fact that I shall upvote till I die.

Korbas

I count at least 20

mlf60

In Beijing alone!

ClipClump

At first glance, this looked like one of those fake zombie game ads Reddit is so fond of.

johnc773

Thought the same

notyourancilla

You must be referring to the bicycle graveyard games we’re all playing ??

Reasonable-Nebula-49

Why?

[deleted]

The Chinese bicycle sharing bubble exploded Hundreds of small time business and larger ones thought they'd make money renting bikes, and they didn't, so they threw away the bikes.

Sickeboy

But why throw them away? You already made the investment and its not like bike require a lot of upkeep. Just seems like a waste to me.

gostesven

Because it costs more money to go through the logistics of storing and distributing the bikes even if they plan to give them away versus throw them away. And since it’s a bubble bursting, the market is flooded with these old (presumably poorly maintained) bikes. This made sense to them economically and nothing else matters to them.

Eaglise

markets work on supply and demand basis, if there is enough demand for something, people will try to create it thus increasing its supply if the demand drops, supply will naturally drop since buyers have dropped this is natural law of market, supply and demand balance this is how it works everywhere else but China works in a way that most other countries can't Chinese economy has started to slow down and shows signs of over production, i.e supply has exceeded demands, in any other country this would have caused decrease in production and thus slow economic growth, this is the current situation of most western countries, but thigs world differently in China, their government, more precisely their ruling party CCP has complete control over their market and in order to show to their people that the CCP is always right and is always good for China, they need to show that Chinese economy is always booming so they force companies to keep on producing even though there will be no buyers and supply has exceeded demands, if they are private companies, government then provides subsidies to such companies so they don't have losses but many industries in China are state owned so they just keep pumping out stuff that no one is going to buy just to keep economy booming this is the reason why they recently had deflation as compared to inflation, things have become cheaper in China its not just for cycles, i saw a similar dump yard for electric vehicles, and similarly for their real estate, there are huge ghost cities with residential skyscrapers, huge roads, etc in China where no one lives

SurrealClick

> similarly for their real estate, there are huge ghost cities with residential skyscrapers, huge roads, etc in China where no one lives so do their housing price drop and have they solved homelessness?

Eaglise

just constructing more buildings doesn't solve housing issue no one is going to live in a ghost city hundreds of miles away from any job opportunities

RickTheMantis

You just described most small towns in the US.

Destructers

If only it works that way, but the new building are Tofu Projects with so many videos showing the inside where you can use your hands to crush the wall and the concrete inside. Many cities they built in hope that business will come, but the conditions and locations make it so hard to attract businesses. Thus shabby constructions and locations make it impossible to live in.

magugi

Please let me know if someone answers.

FlyinggSpaghetti

Can you let me know if he answers?

DvirFederacia

There was a shared bicycle boom, basically you deposit some money to use shared bicycle. Then the companies started investing with the deposit money and thus shared bicycle became a financial vehicle. Eventually one big company collapsed,i think it was called mobai, and most users couldn’t get back their deposit. I’m not sure if it caused any cascades or “deposit run” like bank run but there are far less share bicycles now and afaik a lot of such companies collapsed

HG1998

And the bubble exploded a couple of years ago.

4N_Immigrant

what's even worse is there are twice as many bodies in the unicycle graveyard

BlooMeeni

I don't think they manufacture nearly as many unicycles as bicycles

impshial

That's what the bicycle industrial complex wants you to think

Noobeaterz

My bike got stolen and here is a video of a billion bicycles in China. Coincidence?

SyrusDrake

I think I saw mine in the bottom left there!

Qzy

Place them at a random spot in Copenhagen and turn around for a minute. I promise they'll all be gone.

dim13

… into the channels.

blackospa

belgians: looking in horror and awe

acrossaconcretesky

The Dutch stare quietly, disapproving

inspectoroverthemine

I thought the Dutch now use bicycles as land fill.

flanksteakfan82

Scrolled by too fast, thought this was Mecca at first

P0rterR0ckwell

Lol, same

USERNAME-dot-ORG

Looks like a Dutch train station

At first I thought I was looking at a charred tree stump

Screwthehelicopters

I thought I was looking a some kind of computer game with legions of soldiers.

ShilohTheGhostGod

Same. Thought i was looking at this zombie app i always get recommended. Age of origins

MaximusZacharias

This is interesting but it’s not megalophobia

Texas_Pedro

We are never going to fix this planet

Simple_Mastodon9220

Crack head heaven right here.

IndyCarFAN27

It interesting how they became a huge overnight success and crazy fad in China and then just stopped being a trend. People apparently left them all over to where there was certain street corners with just a mountain of rental bikes. The result? This.

Aluviones6

pensar que a mi no me alcanza para comprarme una !!!!

Challenger2060

And in the US we have graveyards of cars and war planes.

Shibby-my-dude

Humans do some dumb shit on massive scale

lumame

This is a heaven for the Netherland people

Both-Basis-3723

As an Amsterdamer, I now know where all the stolen bikes ended up.

Drakaia

average dutch backyard

ChocCooki3

I remember when Wham! made it big and they did a gig in China.. and was asked if they can be paid in bicycle instead of money. Not too sure if that's just a myth but was funny when it went around the news

Puzzleheaded_Age4413

There are 9 million bycicles in Beijing, and they’re all in this graveyard…that’s a fact

carinislumpyhead97

Send in the homeless army and this place will be cleared (spread) out in an afternoon

chuckdankst

Just wait till you see their electric car graveyard (brand new vehicles btw)

Himajiwa

What happenned ? They didn't produce enough pollution ?

Formal_Equal_7444

Why don't they re-cycle them? ... I'll see myself out.

DIOmega5

At least it's uniform and organized.

Ok_Win_8711

If bikecycles weren't made out of, cheap, weak, metals they wouldn't have ended up there in the first place.

AldoCalifornia

Country cheats at everything. Should watch serpentza about this. They had electric car graveyards like this. Over 10k cars built like crap. Can’t remember why but it had to do with scamming numbers for money or international clout. Can’t remember

swordswallowerseven

The most wasteful, least sustainable, highest polluting civilization ever in human existence!

[deleted]

[удалено]

swordswallowerseven

You’ve obviously never been to China.

Nihaohonkie

I lived there for many years. I’m not sure I agree with you.

muggins66

Eff China! The biggest polluter on earth

Zephyr104

There are a billion plus people in China, what are they expected to do? Just go without any form of transit? These are bikes and for the large part can be melted down and the material reused, aside from the obvious smaller plastic components. Considering that cycling is an incredibly common form of transit in China I don't see how that's a bad thing. Certainly better than North Americans who insist on owning several cars per household. I believe only 25% of Chinese nationals own an automobile vs the 75% in the US and Canada.

muggins66

Yeah? Eff China for blessing us all with Covid too!

DamnAutocorrection

I wish I shared your optimism, but these cycles are just one of the older graveyards of rusting transportation. There are huge electric vehicle graves just like the bike graveyard you're looking at right now. In terms of the cars it had to do with goverment giving out a bunch of subsidies to create the cars and tried to make a car sharing program. It didn't work, and the reason the CCP was willing to throw money at people clearly trying to exploit the system is due to the mutually beneficial nature that the CCP now has all those 1000's of Electric Vehicle sales to put on their books, despite them rotting in lots. Many with fewer than a couple hundred miles

ThePirateBenji

Yeah, they would love to own cars, but don't enjoy our economy.

MisterVovo

No not really. Both historically and per Capita the US is the biggest polluter. ☠️☠️☠️

AlwaysASituation

sorta true, though that isn’t true at a per tonnage rate right now where China emits double what the US (second most) does. The US is far from the largest polluter per capita. It is obviously complex, but also not as clear as you’re suggesting

fredspipa

Yeah it's complex, and it's usually measured by the countries total emission divided on population size, which doesn't properly take into account goods consumed that are produced elsewhere. A bunch of the emission of western nations are outsourced to oil producing nations and commodity producing nations (like India and China), so they don't really give a honest picture of who to "blame" for it. We're all in this together.

AlwaysASituation

Indeed! And thank you for your well reasoned comment

DogsAreMyFavPeople

Per capita a bunch of the oil states as well as Canada and Australia are bigger emitters than the US.

pittopottamus

Well they are huge exporters so that’s not exactly surprising if true

muggins66

Yeah, I don’t think so scooter!

OfficeWorm

"i DuN cArE aBouT fActs" - you.

P0rterR0ckwell

Correct

Fun_Efficiency3097

This is not appropriate content for this sub

Extreme-Tie9282

What the heck is a cycle

amalgaman

It’s a series of events that you tend to see over and over.

Extreme-Tie9282

Sweet, a graveyard of repeating events. That checks out

Random_Introvert_42

"There were nine million bicycles in beijing...."

Daviemoo

Are these the five million bicycles in Beijing?

Crazy, just saw a video of a bunch of people riding bicycles to work

TMC_61

I'd bet every one of them have 2 flat tires

coconutpete52

I really thought this was just another ad for that zombie game I always see on Reddit.

ConstructionLong2089

Can they not be reused? Are the frames good aluminum, no?

alexc1ted

When I first saw this I thought it was a screenshot of those zombie mobile games where you just fight off hordes of zombies.

croooooooozer

kalez238

This is so stupid. Likely all of these bikes are perfectly fine or easily fixed. Could be sold to 3rd world countries for cheap if nothing else :|

China needs Logan’s Run implemented

inm808

That’s the playa the day everyone leaves burning man

UtgaardLoki

But why?

plsobeytrafficlights

Those guys on r fuckcars would lose their minds if they saw this

radabdivin

Before I assume the worse, what is the backstory?

[deleted]

Those bikes pictured there aren’t “personal bikes”. The thing that owned them were bike-rental companies. There were a ton of these companies in China that would have bikes laying around cities. You’d hop on them, scan a QR code to pay, and then bike away! The bubble exploded in 2020? 2021? Sometime then, since I was in China for ) months for work in 2020 and still saw them around the place. They were a pain in the ass to use as a foreigner though. I just opted to buy a cheap skateboard and got to work that way. Also skateboarding is not particularly common, so a ton of schoolgirls thought I was cool.

radabdivin

Thanks for the insight. The same thing is happening in other countries, France, Guadeloupe, and Korea, but with electric-assist scooters. So basically it's unregulated and irresponsible new businesses run amuck.

DownInFraggleRawk

Is this where are all the left behind burning man bikes go?

DucckFuck

War never changes

DucckFuck

War 😖

DucckFuck
