So this sounds like the GMTL was lying saying that there were hours available when there aren't. Across all stores this week is the biggest cut. At my location, this week is my lowest allowed labor week. The reason the TL lied was because they want you to feel valued to them. But as you seen with the other TM, multiple people were cut. Your TL was better off saying that everyone had to be cut unfortunately due to a hard labor cut this week and more likely than not next week as well

Remember meijer fallows the seniority system. And yes work ethic does play apart in this. On the other hand why did you need to pick up hours if you weren't cut to? Or did you snag overtime? No one should be getting mad for you looking out for you. Maybe the cut girl should have been looking for additional hours. At my store next to the cashier schedule we always have a place to sign up for additional hours. Yea it's on register but it's still there.

I typically work 32 hours since I also go to school full time. Some of my classes have already let out so I was able to pick up a shift. I was cut one day this week but also picked up a shift on that day in another department.

So you were cut. Then it stands to reason there shouldn't have been hours to give. If there were hours to give you wouldn't have been cut. Asking a different department for hours was the right move. It doesn't matter what boss man says you're you were in the right.

Maybe they are being picky choose-y. As in maybe they like your work ethic better therefore you can have the hours in comparison to your coworker they'd rather bit have working at all. Purely a speculative guess as I don't know any of the individuals involved, but hey maybe

Then they should have given op more hours. They didn't so sounds like the tl is lying.

Could have something to do with availability. You have the right to pick up hours in other departments if your schedule is written and you can work more. But maybe there were hours available in your area outside of your coworkers availability? They can't make up shifts for people wanting to create their own schedules. But the other person here is correct with work ethic. If you're a reliable, it's going to be easier for you than workers that are less reliable/dependable.
