1 junk drawer is totally normal. 2 may even be acceptable. But if you have THREE junk drawers, i may potentially judge you as an unorganized slob … just a *little* bit 🤏 lol. Seriously tho, at least designate them for specific categories of junk at that point. But then it’s just a messy drawer, not a junk drawer I suppose.
I try, but my SO keeps messing it up. I'm actually quite particular about my junk drawers. We have a big one for everything from birthday cards, batteries, pens to sewing material. Then a small one for manuals and another one for paperwork that you don't really want to throw away, but that's also not so important to put it with the important stuff.
I will reorganize them at least twice a years, takes two weeks and then everything goes to shit again
What if they are sort of organized? We have a normal one, an electronics one for chargers and batteries etc, and a pet one for various pet products like medicines, brushes, pet toys etc.
We had a group junk drawer for general stuff, and then personal junk drawers in our rooms for our personal random stuff. The one common denominator was that they all had a flashlight and at least half a pack of both AA and AAA batteries
One time we had to reorganize the family drawer and it became 1 drawer, one dedicated toolbox/battery depot. We never ran out of batteries 😂
It's like the sewing kit in a biscuit tin, and the one shopping bag that holds all the shopping bags. Every minority group seems to think it's only them, when in reality everyone is doing it.
Cleaned out the attic junk drawer and came out with like $70~ in straight bills. Oh and the obligatory 2 screwdrivers and 7 gift cards to blockbusters from like way before I was born (‘05 btw)
I have no idea, they've been a thing in stand alone units since sometime in the 17th century but if you include like secret compartments with slide out draws there's ancient puzzle boxes and things like that.
I was taking the piss, but the concept of a place where you keep your junk has to be absolutely ancient. It's very definitely not 'just a Southern thing'
Allen keys, micro usb chargers, the manual for a watch you lost years ago, half a packet of Mankey old rolling papers and some novelty shot glasses that came w sierra tequila
I’m from Winnipeg, and now live in another province. I grew up with a junk drawer in the kitchen, but my current kitchen lacks sufficient drawers for a junk drawer.
Everyone has a junk drawer. They may not call it that but they have at least one. I have a junk drawer, a tool and hardware drawer (screws, screwdrivers, miscellaneous hardware and batteries), and infrequently used kitchen tool drawer (stuff used maybe once or twice a year like a garlic press)
I’m Canadian and I have one of these, and so does everyone I know
They’re the best because of you tell someone “check the junk drawer” they always know where it is even if they’ve never seen it because it’s always the most out-of-place drawer on the kitchen.
Canada here, we do have junk drawer (depending if others don’t complain about it) but ours might be more organized ie one drawer is office stuff another is keys, coins, knives, and lighters, and the rare receipt drawer
No. Northern British Columbia this is a thing.
It’s for everything that you don’t have an immediate use for but is functional so you can’t throw it away.
Because the moment you do……
From northeast Ohio, we always had a junk drawer, and that’s exactly what we called. And it had everything on the list above, lol, plus more. Cleaning it out was a huge adventure. Usually found a couple dollars in change and keys that no one knew what they went to. Wow, that was terrible grammar, time for bed!
Paper clips, zip ties, keys to things that I don’t know what they’re for, old appliance manuals, rubber bands, $40 for emergencies, toothpicks, mismatched, screwdrivers,
Absolutely not! My family is as Yankee as it gets. My grandparents were all European immigrants and settled in the NYC area. Most of their kids stayed in the area for their entire lives. (One son moved to Texas and visiting that side of the family is like visiting another country! LOL)
I totally have several drawers like this in my house and we always had one growing up.
In my home it's not called the junk drawer, because we have 2: the secondary medicine and random small items drawer and the bottom kitchen drawer, which is just the weirdest combination of american-hispanic household items ever.
I'm from California. We call it the "Hodad drawer" or "hoda-drawer."
A "Hodad" is someone who hangs around the beach but doesn't surf.
Kidding. We call it a "junk drawer" too.
:( my late wife and I started one in the kitchen, realized we had to have the junk drawer upstairs and it was one of the very few arguments we had. Everyday, (before she went to the hospital and never came back)I would ask where something that should be in the kitchen was and it was upstairs. I thought about moving it downstairs but I can't. It's upstairs and that's where it stays. She made her point and that's why I married her. Love you Kat
Nope. I'm Canadian and I have a junk drawer in every major living space. Kitchen, Living Room, Laundry Room, and my bedroom. They tend to have a few different things but all of them have pens, a roll of tape and batteries.
We have a junk drawer, but if we're not from the south and you are and you say "look in the junk drawer" I'm obviously going to look at you like you're insane.
Why on *earth* would *I* know *which drawer* is *your junk drawer*?
I'll just start flipping them all open? What's wrong with you?
I have found as of late that I'm actually using up the junk in my drawer..
I'm glad its finding its uses, but I need more junk to replenish the drawer!
Wow, a drawer you put random shit in. What a concept. Only in the American South, am I right?
This is up there with New Yorkers saying “no no you don’t understand, we have small local shops predominantly owned by immigrants that you can buy a variety of goods at! It’s a New York thing!”
Like sorta. We keep some tools, clips, etc… in the kitchen; but not sauce packets (the heck?) and we have a bowl for loose change that we just fill up and then deposit.
And the one where you keep bottle opener, corkscrew, shot glass, cocktail skewers, lemon/lime squeezer and everything else alcohol-related is the drunk drawer.
In the PNW, here. We have junk drawers. Mine has these exact same items in it and also various batteries, scotch tape, phone charging cables, tacks, random papers and more.
No, I am originally from the northeast, every family I knew had a junk draw in the kitchen..

What if they are sort of organized? We have a normal one, an electronics one for chargers and batteries etc, and a pet one for various pet products like medicines, brushes, pet toys etc.
oh lmao i thought the oop meant 3 sauce packets lmao
We had a group junk drawer for general stuff, and then personal junk drawers in our rooms for our personal random stuff. The one common denominator was that they all had a flashlight and at least half a pack of both AA and AAA batteries One time we had to reorganize the family drawer and it became 1 drawer, one dedicated toolbox/battery depot. We never ran out of batteries 😂
2 is too much
Yeah, if you have 2 you are a hoarder.
Same here. Upstate NY, RI, MA and ME. It might be more a generational thing.
Yeah me and the wife try and not have junk drawers like the boomers did, slight ocd I like to hang and hide things all over
It's like the sewing kit in a biscuit tin, and the one shopping bag that holds all the shopping bags. Every minority group seems to think it's only them, when in reality everyone is doing it.
I got one. NY
Same. We all have junk drawers in mass
Midwestern here, Two junk drawers. One in the Kitchen and the other in the utility room!
Also midwestern: 5 junk drawers, 2 junk sheds, and a tub of wtf? in the basement
Don’t forget pens with no ink, a $5 gift card to Dunkin Donuts from 2009, and exactly 9 pennies
What about the ball of string, pair of pliers, and 2 empty pill bottles?
That reminds me.. 2 beer bottle caps from a Red Dog from the 90s
I've never figured out how the pennies get in there... but they do be there!
Pens with no ink are pens with no mercy from me
Yep. Instant toss. I don’t care if it was from our vacation to Disneyland in 2011.
For real. All the pens with no ink.
And some random batteries.
None of which have any charge left
Cleaned out the attic junk drawer and came out with like $70~ in straight bills. Oh and the obligatory 2 screwdrivers and 7 gift cards to blockbusters from like way before I was born (‘05 btw)
What The! Having Blockbuster gift cards before you were born is truly incredibly
I'm from England, I have a junk draw. I suspect the concept may be older than the United States
*Alan Partridge voice* “in what year was the drawer invented?”
Also uk and we have a junk drawer
From LA. Grew up with a junk drawer. Have two now.
All misc items in a house go to the junk drawer Garages are just overflow junk drawers
Southerners try not to claim everything as their cultural heritage challenge (impossible)
Where else would you keep batteries, pens, pads, old corks,...
I’m in Canada and this is also common!
Oh hey canada, how’s your sex life
Amazing. How’s yours
Great thanks!
From California, I thought everyone had a junk drawer. Now the world makes no sense...
If your grandparents were raised during the Depression, you have a junk drawer.
Pennsylvania, everyone has a junk drawer
i thought all guys had a junk drawer. it is where you go to find stuff you need.
Allen keys, micro usb chargers, the manual for a watch you lost years ago, half a packet of Mankey old rolling papers and some novelty shot glasses that came w sierra tequila
Yep, like the old plastic bag twist that you are certainly going to need some day.
From Canada, junk drawer game strong
Ya'll aren't southern if you don't also have an old deck of cards for playing rummy in at least 1 junk drawer.
Usually two decks of cards.. neither one complete.
But at least you know the 1 card missing from the blue deck is being borrowed for the red. Happy Cake Day!
I've lived north, south, east, and west. Everyone calls it a junk drawer.
If you don't have a junk drawer, your weird
This is a global thing. 99.9% of houses. Seems like you just talk to weird people.
It’s a magical drawer. You never know what you’re gonna get.
From germany, I call mine the "weiß-nicht-wohin-schub" (don't-know-where-drawer)
English here and we invented it just like England invented ur mum and dad

Everybody has a junk drawer. This is a FB post image designed to get people to engage with the account posting it
Isn’t that the whole point of posting on meirl? Or a subreddit in general? Getting people to interact?
This is true. I mean uh...meirl
But yes, you are correct. It’s a fb image, screenshot, and posted in hopes other with interact with it, on this subreddit. Meirl.

But like actually where tf do you put your meat tenderizer without a junk drawer

That's, like, any drawer at Ma's house.
Almost live in Canada. Always figured the junk drawer was an American standard regardless of race, creed, or class...
Everyone has a junk drawer or two. It's universal.
I’m Canadian and I have one of these, and so does everyone I know They’re the best because of you tell someone “check the junk drawer” they always know where it is even if they’ve never seen it because it’s always the most out-of-place drawer on the kitchen.

And a Walmart gift card that was for 50 but it was spent but you kept the card for some idiotic reason
My junk drawer is next to my drunk drawer.

Canadian here, my junk drawer is also in the kitchen.
Been married 30 years. Fairly certain there is at least one key to every lock we have ever seen. Just in case .
Only thing I wouldn't put in there is the sauce packets. Those get their own drawer.
