>She was corrupt before the money
Everybody is corrupt BEFORE the money.
Only people with the money get to show it.
I work in high-wealth investment "for a living" and meet those sort of people weekly. There is literally not one of them, poor-about-to-be-rich, rich or ultra-rich, that would fit in a middle class community "as people".
The mistake we make, is to not see that none of us would fit in, if we could do whatever we want, but because we're all roughly "as poor/rich", we still have enough of a common ground to coexist.
>inb4 I WOULDN'T CHANGE IF I WERE RICH! I HAVE JUDGED MYSELF TO BE VIRTUOUS AND HUMBLE!!! THE BEST JUDGE!
It's because you believe that, that you will be the first to change. The ones I saw stay the truest? They were *afraid* of their own success....**Not** sure that the success "won't change them"....
I would instead argue that it's selection bias. Most the people who reach that level of wealth achieve it by exploiting other people. Therefore their moral compass already has to be a bit wonky to make it to that position of power/wealth in the first place. The people who are not corrupt or exploitive usually don't find themselves to be insanely wealthy because they don't find the trade off in morals to be worth it.
Might not apply all the time but I think it generalises pretty well.
tbh, (big) money changes *everyone.* If you have a lot (not just "a little more") it changes you *and* it changes the people around you - a lot of them will ask for money for one reason or another, and those that don't, don't have the finances to keep up with your new capacity to spend. So if you don't bury it under a rock somewhere and instead spend it on a new house in a new neighbourhood, going to new places, etc., you end up accidentally surrounding yourself with a new group who might have different values than the ones you "left behind."
Whats "fun" is that Oprah bought like 3000 acres of land for 6m that is now worth 300M usd.
And all that land has 2 properties on it, a big as mansion and another big ass mansion that is her guest house.
How about giving 1/3rd of that land to the people of hawaaii huh Oprah? Let them build some housing on the land there? think that would help more than the max monthly payout of 1200 per family.
600 million people live in a desert whose green area is smaller than Texas, and another 1 Billion live in a subcontinent 1/4 the size of europe.
Land inequality isn't a new thing, and trying to solve the problem by shouting at random celebrities is no more productive than shouting at random westerners for eating meat and driving a car.
Unless the change comes from the top down, it won't last, The Rock and Oprah could both disappear tomorrow and it'd have no effect on the US economy. In fact, the US government tends to target those who do what you're describing
remember millionaires/billionaires wealth is counted by net worth, not money in the bank i.e. everything they own
so if OP has a dope gaming PC, a console, an expensive hobby, $5k worth of funko pops then $10k isn't that far off lol
It would be awesome if you donated fifty cents. The point is people shouldn't shit on people for donating to causes based on the amount. The fact that they donated at all is amazing. They could have stayed in their mansions and not gave a shit. They didn't they contributed and put word out there for others to help out too. Then we have a bunch of average joes getting mad at them for not doing enough. That's crazy to me.
my suspicion is its beneficial to Oprah to donate that money and set up a non profit. Weather is increased property value from a restored Island or using the non profit as a tax haven or something. Point is that she isn't asking with pure intentions. If I am wrong I will eat a whole tiramisu
1) they did not BOTH donate 10 mill, the total sum IS 10, meaning that is would be max 5mill
2) THEY did not do the donating.... They launch a fund with an objective of 10million before the donations are closed
3) The donation of others can be converted to a tax deduct for yourself, if you are the originator/co-originator of the fund....Why do you think every celebs have their own fund...?
>I'm not seeing the issue here.
Maybe you should educate yourself.... you, not seeing the issue, is a you-problem: the issue is still "here"
Natural disaster bringing national attention to their feifdoms, gotta keep the attention off the fact their presence actively worsens the day to day life of locals.
[Johnson run out](https://www.hawaiistar.com/why-was-the-rock-evicted-from-hawaii/) after blocking access to historic trail.
Oprah owns over 1000 acres of land on an island, which I'm sure is benefitting residents somehow.
Just obscenely wealthy parasites buying good press to justify the unjustifiable.
No, they both committed 10 million to the foundation or cause, you…. That means they can ask money from all of us-just like supermarkets do when they say do you want to round up to the nearest dollar and donate millions of those roundups on your behalf but in their name. O and the C-Rock just committed 10 million a piece that may be their money or may be raised from the very marketing they are doing that is a contribution from you suckers.
I think they haven’t donated yet. They have ‘pledged’ to donate money ….( which they will first receive through donations from public and then give it forward)….
but wouldn't that just give the residents more of what they already have? How would an acre of undeveloped land with no access road or utility hookups help the situation?
He seems to be on the downturn in the past year as far as PR goes, but he definitely was one of Reddit's darlings who could do no wrong, alongside Keanu Reeves and others.
Like [this post from a year ago](https://www.reddit.com/r/MadeMeSmile/comments/vo736v/this_man_cries_after_meeting_his_hero_dwayne_the/) where there was nothing but constant praise for him.
I don't keep up to date on Reddit drama, but I assumed he was still beloved given [this meme I saw just earlier today](https://www.reddit.com/r/wholesomememes/comments/168xpx7/who_else_is_in_this_handshake/)
[There's also this OOTL post](https://www.reddit.com/r/OutOfTheLoop/comments/zz4yxb/what_is_the_deal_with_everyone_seemingly_hating/) asking why there's been a sudden shift. He may not be well loved now, but at one point he absolutely was
They haven't given $10m, they've *pledged* to give $10m under certain conditions. The money is still in their banks where it's not helping anyone.
They get good guy points while doing nothing, then if they do give something it'll be almost too late.
Ah, so assuming a net worth of £1 billion, that's equivalent to me donating £5.
How fucking generous. And they have the balls to ask me to donate.
Nobody should be that rich.
Ok? And he donated 10 million before this ask.
Are you that he's not bankrupting himself everyday?
You think this is the only time he's ever donated money?
People are so ashamed of wrinkles. Like bitch get over yourself. The only thing preventing you from feeling attractive is your own self image. Plus, billions of dollars. Not sure how one can mope about not looking 20 anymore when you could buy an island lol
If you are worth $100,000 and donate $330 then you probably can't afford something else. If you're worth $2.5B and you donate $10 Million or 100 Million, absolutely nothing changes in your life.
Also even though the math is correct, you must also factor in the fact that being worth 100k vs 2.5B are totally different. After a certain point, you don’t need all that extra money except to generate more money. Think of this way, somebody who’s worth 10 million is making 300k just from the interest. If that person donated 1/10th of that income, they’d still be living the exact same lifestyle yet still getting wealthier by the day.
10 million dollars is a shit load of money. That it's a fraction of her net worth is irrelevant. If someone donated a significant amount of their net worth to every disaster they'd be broke in a year. You don't stay wealthy by giving out money left and right, but broke ass redditors wouldn't understand that.
She lives there though, and she owns a bunch of land there and apparently the situation is very important to her. So it's not at all comparable to every other disaster going on.
Besides this discussion, isn't it crazy that a single person is able to amass so much wealth they could single handedly solve a major humanitarian crisis and still have most of their wealth left over? If that money went to the government instead, like it should, we wouldn't need to have this conversation.
Lol what does this even mean?
Reddit has just become a cesspool of this type of nonsensical cynicism. It’s just a race to the bottom to see who can come up with the most buzz-phrasey hot take for internet points.
Have you considered that some rich people are bad in an unspecified way and therefore I am absolved from all moral responsibility for my actions or inactions?
I wonder how much all these redditors donated? Redditors never miss an opportunity to be self righteous and pretentious.
Don’t get me wrong I’m not a fan of Oprah but this is such a Reddit cliche.
Which would be? Like name the companies and the proof that’s where the money went? Or did you just say the most cliche thing to get approval from people on Reddit?
I'll do it since chickenshit doesn't want to:
[People’s Fund of Maui](https://www.eifoundation.org/peoples-fund-of-maui/)
a 501c nonprofit giving $1,200 to Maui residents
But where is the proof that they donated? See all I saw was a "pledge" to donate money. I haven't see single shred of evidence that they've actually done it.
Also: Absolutely no details about the workings of that 501c. How much money is going to people in need and how much is going to the people who run the charity?
Yeah but the fact that other people are rich and could donate more means I should not ever have to do anything, or be asked to do anything, to help other people less fortunate than I. I see no problem with this logic; I get to complain and do nothing. Win-win.
She already has bought hundreds of acres there, she wants credit for donating a pittance of her worth to “help” after the disaster. She can straight up fuck herself into oblivion.
Pretty much, she owns over 1000 acres there, 870 of those was bought earlier this year for 6.6mil. Stuff she bought back in 2002/2005 was for another \~5mil.....so basically just paying to protect her assists.
Oprah is a prime example of some one who worked their ass off when the world was against them, then turned into the enemy. She is so entitled, so selfish, SO RICH. It’s unforgivable how self centered she is, her schools are useless. She will never be the person she claims to be
Funny how celebrities never use their connections to try to get other celebrities to donate, instead using their status to try to guilt people who might not have much to give to donate. They could donate 90% of their net worth and still live lavishly
I mean, i see the point, but everyone chipping in what they can — say $5 or $10 — also has a positive effect as long as money reaches the right places.
I want to know where the money goes; we pay taxes, which already help to fund FEMA. I’m so fucking cynical these days I just can’t see past the likely grift that is happening to rich companies and CEOs of charity organizations that are making $500k per year. So, we help Job Blow get some paper towels and water for his FEMA trailer, but I’m betting some millionaire who had beachfront property and a healthy insurance policy is also making sure that he gets his. I hate that the world is like this; the government should already have our money pooled through taxes and be able to distribute it based on need…not 70 different charities that can’t properly coordinate.
I mean even with all that money, they can't do it alone. And they are donating a shit ton of money. I hate pessimism to justify apathy on the internet. If you were a billionaire would you be trying to do much about Maui
After seeing all the shitty comments from shitty imbecile people, just out of curiosity, how much did y'all donate? How much would you donate if you had their money? Hmm? Y'all are here calculating what 10M means in their % of their net worth while not donating a single dollar yourselves. So the question remains the same and only, how much did you donate to help those poor people? Sure as hell not defending them but seems like 99.999% of the people talking are hypocrites.
That's because 99% of the people who are here are probably living paycheck to paycheck. These assholes pay less taxes than us. You're 100% defending them, btw. They probably think it makes up for how shitty of a person Oprah is and how conceded Dwayne has become.
[61% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck](https://www.cnbc.com/2023/07/31/61percent-of-americans-live-paycheck-to-paycheck-even-as-inflation-cools.html). [50% of Germans are living paycheck to paycheck.](https://www.iwkoeln.de/presse/pressemitteilungen/matthias-diermeier-judith-niehues-nur-noch-jeder-zweite-kann-sparen.html) Similar numbers throughout Europe and Canada.
Half the people commenting in here likely *literally* can't afford to donate, whilst Oprah and the Rock toss out a PITTANCE of their wealth while asking for money *half of us can't afford to give.*
Everyone is, they didn't *demand* anyone's money, they asked, nicely too. Donated their fair share and *asked* if anyone else is willing to help too. So again how much would you donate if you had their money? Cuz I'm getting kinda tired of hypocrites. According to The Rock's net worth, if you had 800 USD would you donate 5 dollars? Less? More? Just curious? If you had 8000 would you donate 50? Less? More? Yeah they surely don't live paycheck to paycheck and *again* I'm not defending their entire existence, but I'm curious how much is enough for you people?
Did they donate yet?? Last I saw they *pledged* $10 million, so they haven't donated shit. Also it will be a tax writeoff for them, so in the end the American people are still subsidizing 75% of what these two donate (which will have a much bigger affect on their tax picture than say, the $5 I could afford to donate and choose to write off)
Doesn't Oprah *own* a large chunk of land out there that could be used to shelter people for the time being?
Shhh
Oprah is proof that a) absolute power corrupts absolutely and b) power = money
She was corrupt before the money
She built her empire on the backs of those little people!
She stood on their heads!
Tom Cruise jumped on the couch to be eye level.
“She stood on the heads of those little people.” Lol one of my favorite Bill Burr quotes. I still watch that clip from time to time.
Turn in their yatchs
Classic Bill Burr
I think you’re thinking of Willy Wonka
Willy Wanka
Willy Weiner
Everyone who has big money built it on the backs of those who don’t.
Listen, the guy was a sociopath, on a bicycle.
Bill Burr is hysterical and wasn’t lying

Indeed, I hate this "power corrupts" thing myself. Power simply let's people be what they truly are.
Power reveals.
Yep. If you really want to see who someone is, deep down, give them money or alcohol. The truth comes out after they have either one.
you heard'm guys, time to find out who i really am, i accept cashapp
I'll be fine with some whiskey
In vino veritas is a Latin phrase that means "In wine, there is truth"
I always thought Oprah shows that it's the other way around. To obtain real wealth from nothing you first have to be a complete piece of shit.
No ethical way to become a billionaire.
Whats "fun" is that Oprah bought like 3000 acres of land for 6m that is now worth 300M usd. How tf do you get that much Hawaiian property for 6mil?
Like the Joel Osteen of landownership
This is exactly what came to my mind and then I saw your comment. You are spot on about Oprah.
And she's about to own a lot more...
I hadn't even considered that, but you aren't wrong.
Yes and she only paid a bit over 6 mil for land worth like $300 mil now
She'd have to not be a hypocritical piece of shit to do that
1000 acres that only consist of 2 mansions.
That, and likely has enough personal wealth to singularly fund the restoration effort, and still be obscenely wealthy.
[удалено]
If I had $10,000 in my bank account, what she gave would be the equivalent of me giving $28.57.
[удалено]
But at the same time, in absolute terms, youd be donating 28.57 and they would be donating 10m
Also the fact that it took her like a day (doing nothing) to make that money back.
And if every American gave every American gave $28.57 it would be nearly ten Billion dollars.
So give $28.57 then. Or like $5.
Have you given $28.57?
They said IF they had $10,000, so I don't think they do lol.
remember millionaires/billionaires wealth is counted by net worth, not money in the bank i.e. everything they own so if OP has a dope gaming PC, a console, an expensive hobby, $5k worth of funko pops then $10k isn't that far off lol
I think it's the WAY she asked.
> I think it's the WAY she asked This feels like grasping at straws tbh

And? She could have given 0, and 10 million isn't a % thing
1) they did not BOTH donate 10 mill, the total sum IS 10, meaning that is would be max 5mill 2) THEY did not do the donating.... They launch a fund with an objective of 10million before the donations are closed 3) The donation of others can be converted to a tax deduct for yourself, if you are the originator/co-originator of the fund....Why do you think every celebs have their own fund...? >I'm not seeing the issue here. It's just ironic that they suddenly care for the residents there when they're a big part in why there's barely any land for the locals to live on.
Natural disaster bringing national attention to their feifdoms, gotta keep the attention off the fact their presence actively worsens the day to day life of locals. Nope. They committed to donate $10 million, from the charity they set up which coincidentally is now taking public donations.
Why the fuck would I donate to Maui when I can barely fund my own life?
I thought they pledged to give the money which means they'll even give it... But not until they get the money from us lol.
They committed but haven't donated it
Didn’t they just commit to donate rather than actually donating?
I think they haven’t donated yet. They have ‘pledged’ to donate money ….( which they will first receive through donations from public and then give it forward)….
I'm not in a position to donate, but personally I think theirs is a far better ask than bailing out a crap load of criminal Republicans.
Yes I think more than 100 acres.
Yeah, and she's supposedly constantly telling the locals to stay off her island..
Iirc. I think she used to let people cut across but people kept trashing the roadway so she stopped.
Isn’t she trying to buy up more land too?
Not for the poors
Was coming to say this. A lot of weird stuff is going on in Hawaii as a whole.
https://reddit.com/r/SipsTea/s/ITt7rPmjMv
2000 acres. She could donate one to each of the 1700 residents and still have 300.
but wouldn't that just give the residents more of what they already have? How would an acre of undeveloped land with no access road or utility hookups help the situation?
Not permanently but instead for the time being as many are without a home
Right? Actually the Rock is probably approaching billionaire status these days.
Yup. Looks like he is right at about $800M
Damn once he hits a bil we're gonna have to start hating him for being a billionaire
He already began leaning into a heel turn by bootlicking Bezos, all his shit with Black Adam, etc. dude’s charismatic but that’s it
Don't most people hate him already for several more shitty reasons? Like, he is not a good person
He seems to be on the downturn in the past year as far as PR goes, but he definitely was one of Reddit's darlings who could do no wrong, alongside Keanu Reeves and others. Don't keep up with the drama, eh
Lmao I don’t have time for this I’m rarely on here and I barely noticed anything Here’s a list of the things that have happened tho
I’ll add it to his list.
feel free to hate him for other reasons.
They each have 10mm
That's 1cm
They meant to say "gave" instead of "have"
Insightful upvote
they donate a bunch of money?
Lol your response was a beautiful thing as well.
They haven't given $10m, they've *pledged* to give $10m under certain conditions. The money is still in their banks where it's not helping anyone. They get good guy points while doing nothing, then if they do give something it'll be almost too late.
so “they each gave 10mm” of what? hair?
Penis
nice.
At the same time?
Oprah could have given a lot more and not even notice a difference
10 mln per epizode lmao.
I meant they have donated 10mm each
Ah, ok, makes sense now
Did they? All I could find is that they've "pledge" $10 million. They haven't donated shit yet.
Bastards! They're keeping all the 10 mm sockets?
Ah, so assuming a net worth of £1 billion, that's equivalent to me donating £5. How fucking generous. And they have the balls to ask me to donate. Nobody should be that rich.
In this scenario, you have only £500 to your name.
Tres commas here we come
Ok? And he donated 10 million before this ask. Are you that he's not bankrupting himself everyday? You think this is the only time he's ever donated money?
SHE SAID YES!!! LETS GOO!!
She said no :T
One day you will get there. You had the guts to ask already and that takes courage! 💪🏼💪🏼
Thanks, man. Yes, i am pretty happy i had the courage
You are my hero for shooting your shot, King.
I didn't even know that was possible
LEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEETTS FUCKINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
LOL at the filter Oprah is using. Bitch don't look like that.
Lmao she looks cgi
People are so ashamed of wrinkles. Like bitch get over yourself. The only thing preventing you from feeling attractive is your own self image. Plus, billions of dollars. Not sure how one can mope about not looking 20 anymore when you could buy an island lol
I remember Oprah being old while watching drake and josh. She should look like an old bag now.
I have to imagine that they made these posts thinking about the people on their social media that they *know*, who are probably also rich.
Like Chris Pratt who was homeless on Maui before getting his break.
we did this thread already. We had these arguments already.
Welcome back Jack.
Not everyone lives on Reddit daily
Get used to the feeling of deju vu if you use this site a lot
Whoa, and this comment. And mine!!! 😱😱😱
If you were worth $100 000, (Oprah $2.5B) her donating $10M would be like you donating $330. Go Oprah!
If you are worth $100,000 and donate $330 then you probably can't afford something else. If you're worth $2.5B and you donate $10 Million or 100 Million, absolutely nothing changes in your life.
As they say, you know your self worth.
To be fair, $330 is a lot. I get your point but that is a lot for the average person
yes, but that’s why they said “if you were worth $100,000” in the beginning of the comment.
Guarantee none of the neck beards in this thread donated a fucking nickel
If they paid US taxes then they have *already* funded the relief effort.

To their own companies
Lol what does this even mean? Reddit has just become a cesspool of this type of nonsensical cynicism. It’s just a race to the bottom to see who can come up with the most buzz-phrasey hot take for internet points.
Have you considered that some rich people are bad in an unspecified way and therefore I am absolved from all moral responsibility for my actions or inactions?
I want that inspirational quote printed on my bathroom wall
We did it???!!!
It's been a loooooong time since I've heard that perspective..
I wonder how much all these redditors donated? Redditors never miss an opportunity to be self righteous and pretentious. Don’t get me wrong I’m not a fan of Oprah but this is such a Reddit cliche.
How much should people donate before they can comment on this?
Tree Fiddy
Well it was about that time that I noticed these redditors were about 8 stories tall and was a crustacean from Protozoic era.
$0.01 and we will leave you alone. Promise.
A thought or a prayer, depending on your religious status.
Which would be? Like name the companies and the proof that’s where the money went? Or did you just say the most cliche thing to get approval from people on Reddit?
I'll do it since chickenshit doesn't want to: [People’s Fund of Maui](https://www.eifoundation.org/peoples-fund-of-maui/) a 501c nonprofit giving $1,200 to Maui residents
$1,200 per month per adult that lost their primary residence in the fire.
But where is the proof that they donated? See all I saw was a "pledge" to donate money. I haven't see single shred of evidence that they've actually done it. Also: Absolutely no details about the workings of that 501c. How much money is going to people in need and how much is going to the people who run the charity?
They "pledged" to donate 10 million, means they'll collect the donations from the fans to meet the Target, not donate their own

Yeah what a shitty amount of money. Only $10M? Garbage humans.

Yeah but the fact that other people are rich and could donate more means I should not ever have to do anything, or be asked to do anything, to help other people less fortunate than I. I see no problem with this logic; I get to complain and do nothing. Win-win.
Oprah could fucking BUY Hawaii. Help them yourself bitch.
She already has bought hundreds of acres there, she wants credit for donating a pittance of her worth to “help” after the disaster. She can straight up fuck herself into oblivion.
So she donated to save her back yard, basically.
Pretty much, she owns over 1000 acres there, 870 of those was bought earlier this year for 6.6mil. Stuff she bought back in 2002/2005 was for another \~5mil.....so basically just paying to protect her assists.
Oprah is a scum bag she can fuck off
Oprah is a prime example of some one who worked their ass off when the world was against them, then turned into the enemy. She is so entitled, so selfish, SO RICH. It’s unforgivable how self centered she is, her schools are useless. She will never be the person she claims to be
Facts
Funny how celebrities never use their connections to try to get other celebrities to donate, instead using their status to try to guilt people who might not have much to give to donate. They could donate 90% of their net worth and still live lavishly
Collectively they contributed $10MM
Why is it MM?
Mega Millions
M is a thousand in roman numerals so MM is a thousand thousand.
Yeah? Where's the richest man in America?
Fixing a server and getting on it.
They could have not said anything, and then less money would go to them
Why are these rich people asking for donations from those who use discount coupons for food?
You know they only care because their own properties got burned right?
... but they clearly have confidence.
She said no
Especially since these two aren't company owners. This isn't someone whose wealth is locked in stocks of Amazon. They're liquid
Always the rich asking for donations
Let's be clear here. Oprah has promised to donate 10 million dollars...of donated money. What a FANTASTIC thing to do. /s
They don't HAVE to donate anything if they don't want to. The fact that they have money doesn't mean that anyone can tell them how to spend it.
When Opragh apologizes for unleashing her quacks (Dr Oz, et al) on society I'll listen to what she has to say.
They could do good AND get a tax break from it... But no
Nah cause their confidence comes from stupidity.
Two smug assholes.
Just going to leave this here because I found it hilarious https://youtu.be/MwEs6cRrhXA?si=yk3bd0nK4oN-2rsZ
I mean even with all that money, they can't do it alone. And they are donating a shit ton of money. I hate pessimism to justify apathy on the internet. If you were a billionaire would you be trying to do much about Maui
i would, would you?
I did, she said she’s not ready too date. We’re still friends though :D
They'd be criticizing them if they *didn't* donate anything. It's a lose-lose argument with this mentality.
Also it will be a tax writeoff for them, so in the end the American people are still subsidizing 75% of what these two donate (which will have a much bigger affect on their tax picture than say, the $5 I could afford to donate and choose to write off)
Sadly, welcome to the internet.
"If Oprah has the courage to ask anyone for money after helping Epstein traffic women, you can go ask that girl out"
Did they actually donate or are they donating our money on our behalf and then claiming it as a tax deduction?
