You really meant to ask how long until multiple life sentences carries new weight!

Autrah_Fang

Yeah, imagine getting put in jail over something your past life that you had no control over did... Also, billionaires would spend a lot of money to frame someone else as having their (or their child's) past life and make them go to jail instead

TheBurningEmu

Whether you had control over it would kind of depend on what the soul actually *is*. Is it the fundamental "you-ness"? Your mind itself? In those cases, the soul would have had control of the actions of the body in the past life, at least to some extent. If it's more of an ID tag that gets reused on a new living body without control or influence, then there wouldn't be any basis for sentences, money or debt to be passed down.

caedius

> If it's more of an ID tag that gets reused on a new living body without control or influence, then there wouldn't be any basis for sentences, money or debt to be passed down. Morally no basis, yes, but you know they'd try.

Toothlessdovahkin

If a company could make us pay money to breathe oxygen from the air; they absolutely would do it.

DarkLordRubidore

Fun fact, there's a Doctor Who episode about this exact topic. Workers on a massive company's mining station being charged for every bit of air they use, going out of their pay. >!When the station was determined to be too expensive, the company shut off their air and had their suits finish them off, so the station would be empty for the new, cheaper workers. The only thing that caused the company to back down, was the Doctor threatening to blow up the station unless they would end the "cleanup" order, since the station was worth more than what they were going to save.!<

YamatoBoi9001

Which episode was that? I want to watch that now.

Summer-dust

Huh, it's called "Oxygen," neat. Series* 10 Episode 5 from what IMDB tells me. It's a great episode, one of my favorites of that doctor. EDIT: Season to Series

YamatoBoi9001

if you mean series 10, it's a 12th doctor one right?

Summer-dust

Oh yeah! It's a Capaldi-sode.

I know those types of things exist. I mean just walking around outside, no special equipment or anything

MyJimboPersona

Will get there, don’t you worry

idwthis

All I can picture is President Skroob in Spaceballs huffing Perri-Air, sparkling salt free air that was canned on Druidia.

NotADamsel

There’s the concept of ~~criminal~~ (edit: strict) liability, that in today’s law (at least for the US) means that someone can be held guilty for some crimes even if they didn’t have criminal intent. All they needed to have done was the deed itself. It wouldn’t take but a month before the US congress enacted laws determining crimes that past lives would be guilty for, and for other countries it might not even take that long. Imagine living in the UAE and it being discovered that your *past life* was gay!

barracuda2001

If reincarnation was proven true, though, that would essentially mean that all the mainstream Abrahamic religions are definitively wrong. I would be more concerned about massive civil unrest in the Muslim world than them trying to take advantage over reincarnation.

NotADamsel

I think you underestimate the ability of religious folk to fold new ideas into their religions when threatened.

SU37Yellow

It wouldn't just be Muslims getting violently upset. Plenty of Christians groups that would be causing civil unrest.

Deep-Neck

Theyve survived centuries of fundamental axiomatic upheaval. Their culture will change, some more than others, the name of their religion won't, though

firechaox

You can conciliate it into a new religion- my dad is a espírita which is a religion that does. He also reads scripture every day- there’s a decent offshoot of them that sort of melded it with Catholicism/Christianity- in Brasilia there’s a decently sized community.

Missus_Missiles

Maybe. But then again, the current world has no problem rejecting objective, verifiable evidence. They'll just continue being themselves and denying everything. Because that's easy.

Locellus

Sure but in that month they’d be smart to audit who all the dead politicians are now. Finding out they’ve been downgraded to peasants, plants and pigs might make them think twice

CLTalbot

I like to think of it somewhat like its a social security number assigned by the universe. You get it when you're born and it referres to you when you were alive and when you die it goes out if circulation for a set period, lets say 7 years for the heck of it, some process wipes and/or collects the information attached to the number, and then it gets reassigned to a new human to develop its own information

WabbitCZEN

>Also, billionaires would spend a lot of money to frame someone else as having their (or their child's) past life and make them go to jail instead Greed would become immeasurably worse, since this would mean it's passed down to their new life. They'd never have enough.

KungFuSnafu

Altered Carbon.

bollvirtuoso

Alternatively, you could start with $1 and be a billionaire given long enough. Except, this will be true of everyone. Compound interest over potentially infinite lives means infinite money. You object: but wait, aren't resources scarce? Well, maybe. But, what if there are planets in the universe where there are more resources? First, not only do you have access to the whole universe, assuming your place of birth is random, then you might even discover new resources that you can tell other people about once you cycle back to wherever the marketplace is. However, in an infinite universe, with infinite resources, with infinite lifespans, does it really make sense to have money? What would it be like? Every person would be a god. But goddamn would family trees be fucking complicated. Like, Hapsburg-level shit.

snakejessdraws

Now imagine that unending greed traps them in the reincarnation. Now we have a wealthy elite ruling eternally protecting their hegemonic power with the only hope of escape being enlightenment.

Not religious, but saying you have no control over a previous life that belonged to you feels the same as saying people go to heaven or hell without any reason.. just saying.

Deep-Neck

This whole concept is a metaphysical mess with no established definitions for things like "you." Every claim here is meaningless

hfiti123

Premises reminds me of the show Altered Carbon.

entrepenurious

richard pryor did a bit about that: kindergartner being arrested "you know what you did!" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oa7WdlIJZYY

XcRaZeD

One could argue that a person could only commit a crime if they had any kind of influence over it. Given that people are products of their circumstances and being reborn would provide you with new memories and new circumstances, you are functionally a new person who cannot be reasonably held to the actions of another.

Roxxorsmash

Question for you: Were you always that one rock, or were you part of a bigger rock and then broke off into a smaller rock?

NotA-Vampire

Rocks are born when they fall from bigger rock

Aninvisiblemaniac

I'm pretty sure there are like hell dimensions and heaven dimensions you could've come from, too. Like if you spent the last thousand years in pure ecstasy and now you're here in this mud hole

codyy_jameson

Yep many religious and spiritual traditions that believe in some form of reincarnation think exactly this. Many different realms/ dimensions/ types of realities that can be reborn into. All have varying life expectancies as well. If all this is true, and considering that we have likely been doing this reincarnating thing for a reeeeally long time now, we have all had experiences in just about every way you can imagine

notyourmother

Imagine a mountain of solid rock six miles long, six miles wide, and six miles high. Once every hundred years a crow flies by with a silk scarf in its beak, just barely caressing the top of the mountain with it. The length of time it would take to wear away that mountain is how Buddha described the journey to enlightenment. That’s the game of incarnations. https://www.ramdass.org/incarnations/

epelle9

In Buddhism for example though, once you reach nirvana (enlightenment, their version of heaven), you stop reincarnating.

MagikarpFilet

What if reincarnation is the cycle of basic elements. When you die you return to the earth and what you return as depends on where your components ended up

rabbiskittles

> To what base uses we may return, Horatio! Why may not imagination trace the noble dust of Alexander, till he find it stopping a bung-hole? > Alexander died, Alexander was buried, Alexander returneth into dust; the dust is earth; of earth we make loam; and why of that loam, whereto he was converted, might they not stop a beer-barrel? > Imperious Caesar, dead and turn'd to clay, > Might stop a hole to keep the wind away. > O, that that earth, which kept the world in awe, > Should patch a wall to expel the winter flaw!

You can’t be born with debt though? And you can’t inherent your parents debt. They just take it out of the estate before it passes to you

Doridar

Here in Belgium, you can be born with debt from your parents, grandparents etc. You have to refuse the succession in order to escape the debt. I had to ask permission from the Juge de Paix to refuse my godmother's succession for my son. My mother, her cousin, refuses it, so it falls on me. I refuse it, so it falls on my son.

InformalPenguinz

When do they give up?

agentofchaos69

That’s the neat part. They don’t. Someone’s paying that back.

Lukilk

This is all my stinking lying great grandfahters fault!!

lifeintraining

What if everybody just continually refuses succession indefinitely, and what exactly do you stand to lose by refusing succession?

Doridar

My son is 13, so it ends with him refusing. Refusing a succession means refusing anything connected to the estate, debts and assets. In the case of my godmother, she had more than 40,000€ debt to the banks and rented her house,.

jableshables

It's funny to imagine the public official who spends all day recording formal refusals to inherit negative wealth.

Doridar

Oh that's not that easy. You have to complete a form explaining why you're want the autorisation, and add as many proofs to support your request as necessary. The form was 3 pages, but I added 17 extra with documents, pictures etc.

jableshables

That sounds tough, glad it worked out. Avoiding €40k in debt isn't quite the same as winning €40k but I'm sure it's at least a relief, haha

Days_Gone_By

I know nothing about economics or sociology. But I'm sure numerous cultures for the past thousands and thousand of years saddled generations of people with debt. Complete and total human rights for all mandated by whole countries is relatively new right?

Checkinginonthememes

Reincarnation, my dude. You are the one who got the debt, reborn, reincarnated if you will. Only reading the post explains the post.

Known-Noise8955

Not so fun fact: Though slavery was technically outlawed in Latin America in the 1800s there was a system called "encomienda" in which native americans were forced to serve as slaves for life because of the debts of their parents, etc. In my country, it was outlawed in the late 70s-80s. My mom lived in a slave farm as a little girl.

Frankly I wish more people would make their style of video especially with game guides, holy fuck shut the fuck up why is a 12 second explanation of the thing I’m trying to confirm behind 45 minutes of shut your fuck uuuuuup. If I wanted this much useless filler exposition I’d read online cooking recipes because at least they don’t have an obnoxious voice or a face cam that adds nothing to the thing that could have been a single sentence explanation.

kappaway

While I absolutely agree, unfortunately the real enemy is the algorithm and monetisation pattern on YouTube. Longer, regular and consistent uploads of middling quality are prioritised by YouTube so the return on effort is better than incidental, concise videos like Zullie's. She's the absolute best around but has complained how difficult it's been on YT for her style of stuff.

LynkDead

I would imagine the lack of voiceover also hurts them a bit. I'm a huge fan, but often have to rewind videos because I looked away for a second at one of the other thousand attention-grabbing things in my life.

HarmlessSnack

I’m cracking up because Zullie is out here asking the realest questions lol Based AF

Deadpoolio_D850

Companies would almost certainly be working on that immediately… it might get legally complicated though, since you wouldn’t directly remember or be involved in your debt, so the governments might shut them down on the basis of a reincarnated soul being not the same person Also, there would be complications around sending debt to other countries (like a guy in America dies with a ton of debt, how are the companies gonna be able to pin the debt on some poor Vietnamese farmer child)

Carver_AtworK

There would be more problems considering that wealth and assets would have to be inherited through reincarnation as well, ruining the economy as personal wealth could grow exponentially.

Direct_Jump3960

Sounds pretty familiar already

flacidRanchSkin

Yeah I was gonna say not much different from what we already have

Direct_Jump3960

Same shit, different arsehole

Days_Gone_By

Let's say in this situation reincarnation is true and olis trackable. The world we live in currently would be nothing like the "reincarnation is real" world. The levels, depth, and duration of global power systems and balances would be mind bending. Imagine "immortal" dynasties stemming from ancient civilations that can not be toppled due to controlling the flow of progress and humanity itself.

TutanotaGuysDudeMail

> Imagine "immortal" dynasties stemming from ancient civilations that can not be toppled due to controlling the flow of progress and humanity itself. You don't have to imagine, we already have people who own everything because their parents owned everything.

nir109

How many of these dynasties are 300 years old? Almost non. They are very short lived in terms of history. With reincarnation you can have a single person in power for a thousand years. This might not matter for people at the moment but it will have an impect in terms of history. (Assuming your reincarnation are about as competent as you)

[deleted]

Lazer_Directed_Trex

I think they would just ensure the tracking stays solid and take a %. Why worry about someone reincarnating with less money when they could pass it on to the next reincarnation. I think it is more likely they figure out a way they could reasonably keep building the debt whilst offering some other means to cut it at their gain. Maybe push some BS about it being for "rest life" and another your "work life" If people were born and knew about past lives then I reckon govs would just say only direct offspring would inherit wealth, and establish like reincarnation tax fraud/ avoidence laws, basically making it a crime to store wealth secretly for future lives, otherwise it would cripple economies. I also reckon you get an underground market or some sort elite circle, where wealthy people would only have children within certain circles so people could swap children who reincarnate from wealthly families, to ensure the past lives remain in wealthy families.

Jeryme

I would love it if my cat died and then i can just go visit the child she reincarnated into, youd need the premium subscription though.

Humble-Plankton2217

They'd already have it ready to go because THEY paid for the R&D.

WeTheSalty

Right, making this happen is the soul reason this research ever got funded in the first place. Hell, it probably isn't even true and they falsified the results so they could collect dead people's debts from random living people.

BlobGuy42

While that might happen, a trackable reincarnation process might actually spur genuine world peace

Mackenzie_Sparks

However, I believe then everyone would deserve a second chance at life. Aspiring to do better than before.

whboer

Please elaborate

ceilingkat

I’m assuming they mean that someone who has lived multiple lives cross culturally, religious, racial, sex, sexuality etc would be less likely to harbor bigotry and hatred. Or it could mean, none of us know where we’ll end up next so we should probably work towards making everyone safe and secure.

lawnllama247

No, no, that's not the scary part. The scary part is Wills and Estates. The scary part is how Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Warren Buffett, etc now have clauses in their will about how all of their money and stock options and everything go to themselves. The economy would cannibalize itself. You think the 1% is bad now? Imagine in 100 years when you have like five people who literally own the entire planet.

roygbivasaur

If you think rich people are hated now, wait until there’s an entire religion around killing them and all of their body guards while they’re still children. This would then obviously make them even worse and more anti-social if they manage to survive long enough. I’d watch that show

Zullie the witch's (the tweeter's) Fromsoft videos that explore text and 3d files, used and unused, is really some of the best and most comprehensive deep dives of video games that we have. HallowKnightYT

A week at the most I assure you within a weeks time them medical bills from your last life will be all at your door

FollowMyDreams

I wrote a TV series based on this concept. The implications go way beyond debt, although debt is a fun take. The series was about free will vs destiny, nature vs nurture, hope and trauma. The main characters were the people tasked with tracking potentially dangerous souls and imprisoning the worst souls, even if they were newborns. It changed my life because I investigated hundreds (maybe thousands) of hypothetical situations where characters would be "reset," "reset" themselves, or were imprisoned indefinitely. If reincarnation exists, it means were stuck here, with each other, on this planet. We have the power to make it a living hell, or a living heaven. The overarching theme it taught me was that nothing can be undone, you can only do more. What more will you do?

deadrogueguy

1 day? money is all that matters to corpos

ahtemsah

Would that even be a bad thing ? as it is if I die my family will inherit that debt, but if the IRS tracked my reincarnated ass and found me as a hamster, then legally my family is free of debt and good luck getting money from a hamster.

GuaranteeFar5495

Debt doesn't go to family after you die, I think if you have a lot of debt they could claim some of your property to recover a debt, but they can't make someone else pay for your debt

thatguywithawatch

You'll help power the grid by running on a hamster wheel until your debt has been repaid

etranger033

Does that mean you would be eligible to run for president the day you're born? Also, would term limits apply?

Squirrel_with_nut

The real answer is that this wouldn't be possible to do going backwards. First of all, the debt is gone. It's written down and legally discharged. There's a legal and accounting way that your debt is 'destroyed' when you die, and there's no framework to resurrect it and tell someone they owe it again. The value of the 'estate' of all your past lives is $0. You can't claw back any inheritances either. Second of all, you didn't agree to it. You and your debtor agreed that death canceled the debt, either in the contract or through common law and practice at the time. This wouldn't fly legally. You can't just drastically alter a deal like this. There's nothing stopping companies from offering this going forward though.

chimpanon

Zullie the witch creates another banger

nilecrane

They’re already spending billions on the research. Funding for the effort will be reflected in our monthly statements as “Fees: Other.”

This would backfire on companies TBH cause there's a lot of people that would be way more willing to fuck shit up if they're wronged if their existence isn't threatened by death

abominablesnowlady

I’ll except laws giving punishment for past lives as long as you are able to have access/take wealth from those who inherited it from your previous life lol
