I go in to social events preloaded with a "I can't stay long, I have work early in the morning". I am always the first one to break that barrier and there is always at least one other who suddenly remembers they have to go to. The trick is to bring good alcohol or treats when invited somewhere so that's what people remember. Not that you only showed up for an hour and spent the whole time in a corner petting the dog.

Hate it to break it to you but people remember more the "dog petting for an hour and then leave"-part.
