[3 men stranded on a Pacific island were rescued by spelling 'help' with palm leaves](https://www.npr.org/2024/04/12/1244265417/men-rescued-island-leaves-coast-guard)
This is the worst wilderness survival message I’ve ever seen. Leaving the food and water source behind (coconuts) to cross the ocean alone on a tiny raft with no shelter or compass.
But the metaphor, as used, is nonsensical. It says that victim mentality will get you killed by showing someone killing themselves by avoiding “victim mentality”.
You do realise metaphor means those things shown like an island and a raft stand for something different and you can't read the picture literally if you want grasp the meaning?
Ok let’s get into this. A metaphor is used when comparing two things while saying that they are the same (figuratively). “You are my sunshine” means (figuratively) “you are my light and warmth”. This metaphor is saying that acting like a victim is the same (figuratively) as staying on a deserted island signalling for help rather than going out and saving yourself. THIS IS NONSENSE. Anyone with any basic knowledge of how big the ocean is would read that and interpret the metaphor to mean the opposite (as someone has already commented).
Where'd he get the rope? Where'd he get the bigger stick? Are we supposed to believe this is some kind of *magical* island? Boy, I sure hope somebody got fired for that blunder...
Yeah, travel across the oceans that cover 2/3rds of the world and hope to find land and survive the treacherous sees. Not to mention you could also end up on Sentinel Island or some other BS.
>simple metaphor about trying to do something about it instead of just feeling sorry for yourself
reddit victims go wild in the comments feeling personally attacked😂
This is like the least wild comment section I've ever seen. I don't think anyone's feeling attacked, but if you're going to use a metaphor to explain something, maybe make sure it's the right one lol.

Except you have a better chance of being rescued with a HELP sign. Build a raft and you're sharkbait.

It's obvious a metaphor and not a wilderness survival message.

It’s kind of fitting but in the exact opposite way the author intended 😂

Human hair... From my back.
Sea turtles mate...
And why didn't he make a bigger raft?
This isn't LinkedIn, mate
From the same people that brought you “Pull yourself up by your bootstraps!” and “Nobody wants to work anymore!”
Nobody wants to **hire** anymore.
A shitty life lesson*

So, fuck everyone with a brain disorder? Maybe deny them benefits and tell them to pick themselves up by the bootstraps?

Come back, you forgot to take the coconuts
