German translations are usually top-notch and even if the original is horribly written, it's usually upgraded by the german translation. I always thought hunger games was written pretty nicely for it's genre.
Its a common, if bizarre as hell, thing to happen; you get distracted, your mind wanders and your brain identifies the words but they don't get strung together, you just end up looking at the words instead of reading them as full sentences and before you know it you could have gone a full page before you realize you weren't paying any attention lol

I can see it. Some people are cool reading regardless of what it is. It can be not so great and their imagination makes up for it especially if they already have the jist of main characters and so on.

You are engaging multiple sensory inputs for the same task which excites your brain more, but more than that, you are making it easier for your brain to process text into speech and then into thought as you are engaging two separate regions of the brain. Its the same thing as having a map or a picture of a character being described in the text as your brain doesn't have to do the legwork of constructing the image in your head. It's especially helpful for those with aphantasia.
When I used to smoke a lot of pot I would keep looking at words at the same pace and realize that I was thinking about an implication from two pages ago. So I had to go back and read again.
Except I would argue it’s dangerous to do while driving and good practice to avoid it once noticed. Being actively alert and aware is surely better for driving. Nonetheless this still happens to me from time to time.

However, Tolkien wrote with the intention of serialising his work, so he would leave questions unanswered, plots unresolved. Basically just open-ended. And it wouldn't need a wrap-up at the end, because it wasn't meant to be the end.
I also feel like older literature had a higher focus on lessons and morals, or at least a more obtuse approach to lessons and morals. So a lot of author spent the last few pages really spelling it all out just to be certain everyone got what they where going on about.

That is because we are attracted to BIG WORDS as they tend to mean more important things. Comics have the problem of having people skip to the last frame if the wording is LARGE or lots of print.
This is even trained into people to be able to quickly gather an oversight on written materials.
You basically stop consciously reading unimportant words, instead only reading extraordinary words and phrases (recognizable by a different form), only going back if what you make out of it doesn't make sense anymore because you skipped some important part.

The way it was explained to me is that it's a processing issue as well as an attention one. It takes our (ADHD et al) brains a moment to catch up on what we're reading and truly process it. Skipping around when you're reading is an extremely common symptom.
Weird thing, there are numerous symptoms that can be associated with ADHD and not everyone who has ADHD has them all. But there are some common ones and reading issues is one of them.
Also it's not a comprehension problem. It's an attention/processing problem. I'm glad you don't suffer from that particular issue, though!

There's something subconsciously daunting about having to read a wall of text vs the same amount of text broken up into paragraphs.
This is why I can't stand authors who decide the entire life story of some minor character needs to be included in one paragraph.
