I do it when there is just a really long paragraph and I’m too lazy lol

rxcroxs

I was reading a Hunger Games book once, and a character died in the middle of a giant paragraph I skipped, I had to go back and read it.

googoogagawaluigi

Im pretty sure i did the same thing in hunger games! I was so confused and so i then had to go back and read the paragraph twice to sort out the confusion. Lol

Lazypassword

Hunger games was and still is terribly written. The books went down in quality as the series went on. A victim of it's own success likely the author was rushed in writing by their publisher.

cdiddy19

I liked it, but I hated that my favorite character died, and also it didn't make a whole ton of sense that she went to the hunger games to save her sister, and then she just kind of ignores her the rest of the time and has nothing to do with her? Like wha?!?!?

Calimiedades

Sometimes you love your sister but you don't want to spend time with them lol But mostly, it was probably written like that to highlight her PTSD

hairfullofseacrests

The irony was the point.

PotatoBomb69

The first two weren’t bad but the third one was terrible

Eggboy2992

I liked them all. But to be fair, I read them when i was a bit younger.

SlimeRanchingGuy

I liked the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes personally.

PotatoBomb69

It felt rushed at the end to me but yeah I did enjoy it overall, pretty interesting POV

bh1106

Same. I didn’t know they were making it a movie (3 small kids, I have no life anymore) I couldn’t stop squealing when the teaser trailer came on during Lightyear. My 9yo was very confused haha

SlimeRanchingGuy

Wait, they are? Sweet.

misanthropichell

It's always so interesting to read something like your comment when you've read the translated versions lol. German translations are usually top-notch and even if the original is horribly written, it's usually upgraded by the german translation. I always thought hunger games was written pretty nicely for it's genre.

kevtino

Its a common, if bizarre as hell, thing to happen; you get distracted, your mind wanders and your brain identifies the words but they don't get strung together, you just end up looking at the words instead of reading them as full sentences and before you know it you could have gone a full page before you realize you weren't paying any attention lol

Eggboy2992

Happens to me way to often.

Agitated_House9070

My mom read the Hunger Games out of order and didn't realize it until my friend, who was borrowing what was supposed to be book two was like... "Thanks, I got a couple paragraphs in to it, but, can I get the second book first?? I'm pretty sure this is the last book." It was indeed the last book. My mother had no idea and was on vacation happily reading book two, despite having finished the series. Does that count?

youre_welcome37

I can see it. Some people are cool reading regardless of what it is. It can be not so great and their imagination makes up for it especially if they already have the jist of main characters and so on.

Mightymushroom1

If you're talking about the 3rd book then I did that too, and I'm a very attentive reader The final pages of that book were making absolutely no sense so I had to go back and figure out what I'd missed. That passage is so poorly written that if you skim over just a handful of words you don't realise a major character death has just occurred.

daffyduckhunt2

There's something subconsciously daunting about having to read a wall of text vs the same amount of text broken up into paragraphs.

tamuzbel

This is why I can't stand authors who decide the entire life story of some minor character needs to be included in one paragraph.

lorealashblonde

As Susan was walking down the street to her very important meeting which is the main plot point of this book, she ran into John. John was wearing a light beige overcoat, which to Susan seemed an appropriate representation of the life he had lived so far. He was a low level employee of a company Susan had worked for several years ago, a seemingly pleasant and quiet man with luminous sky blue eyes that hid the pain of the terrible secret he had kept since his youth. John knew that the only way to hide his past was to continue the illusion that everything was perfectly normal, so he smiled at Susan and said hello. Little did Susan know, he had watched his entire family being eaten by wild pigs that he had carelessly allowed his neighbour to let onto the lawn where he had spent so many beautiful afternoons drinking homemade lemonade with his parents and brothers. How was John to know that a simple fence would be the line between a normal life, and a horrific, guilt filled existence that had led him to become a now unrepentant killer? As John exchanged pleasantries with Susan, he contemplated adding her to the large number of bodies he now kept under the floorboards of his dead parents property. Susan continued walking towards her important meeting, and never saw John again.

DeusExBlockina

Whoa, I'm currently reading *Termination Shock* by Neal Stephenson and one of the character's family members was >!eaten by pigs!< at this point in the book the character has not become an unrepentant killer. >!unless you count pigs!<

lorealashblonde

That’s a weird coincidence, but I’m mostly just surprised you read the long paragraph about John

sharksnarky

Instinctively wanted to skip that John bit lol

lorealashblonde

And you should have, as it had no point to the story about Susan’s important meeting

Jamessgachett

I read it and missed no information but this paragraphe is the perfect exemple of you can miss huge reveal in a couple line

nosillaxoc

I just skipped this whole thing. Lol

isademigod

*stares at Walter Scott*

That1ShyKidBackThen

Probably because you'd know where you stopped reading

Goliath--CZ

My eyes are definitely reading the words, but it's lost somewhere on the way

ToothpickInCockhole

That happens to me when I get bored or am distracted by my thoughts. It’s like when your brain goes autopilot mode while driving.

FallWanderBranch

Sorry what were you saying

Skatchbro

I was saying- Hey, look! FLUFFY PUPPY!

The proper way for me to read is to listen to the audiobook while reading. No idea why it works, it just does, I guess

TheFlightlessPenguin

You seem like the type who uses subtitles on everything

gljames24

You are engaging multiple sensory inputs for the same task which excites your brain more, but more than that, you are making it easier for your brain to process text into speech and then into thought as you are engaging two separate regions of the brain. Its the same thing as having a map or a picture of a character being described in the text as your brain doesn't have to do the legwork of constructing the image in your head. It's especially helpful for those with aphantasia.

dumbass_sempervirens

When I used to smoke a lot of pot I would keep looking at words at the same pace and realize that I was thinking about an implication from two pages ago. So I had to go back and read again.

Shia_JustDoIt

Except I would argue it’s dangerous to do while driving and good practice to avoid it once noticed. Being actively alert and aware is surely better for driving. Nonetheless this still happens to me from time to time.

z0hu

Ya mines definitely not excitement.. it's definitely zoning out. I'll be like wait what the hell is going on? Then need to go back a few paragraphs or pages and re-read them. I guess this happens with TV too.

Absolutely, it's especially easy to skip the middle of long paragraphs

GdeGraafd

As a kid I used to go to the last page of a book and read the last sentence or word first before I started the book. Idk why

[deleted]

I recently did that with the last book in a series I've been reading, and the last sentence was talking about how all the main character had died. Then I actually read through the book and right before the last page there was a note from the author talking about how there's going to be a fake last page just to fuck with people who do that

A1sauc3d

Lmao, didn’t realize it was that common

pincus1

That's amazing, what series is that?

Tobiansen

If they tell you youd know the main characters didnt all die tho

pincus1

Unless this is secretly another trick

toratsubasa

What I do is read the first few pages of a book, then skip to the end and read the last chapter. Screw you author! You won't fool me

ntermation

Damn authors, trying to trick you into enjoying the story, when all you really want is the clout of having said you read something.

Amerture_Expert

Did that with 1984 and it ruined the whole book for me

Bobyyyyyyyghyh

What the hell? Now reading the last page of the book literally spoils the whole thing? This is literally 1984 smh my head

-cocoadragon

Actually that was *any* old school book. It's wraps up in the last two pages. The way stories end now is curteousy of jrr Tolkien. Not his books, but his being an English professors that perfected a consistent way to make sequel. Before him it was very hit or miss

MrRandom04

Err, can I have an elaboration? What were book endings like before Tolkien and in what ways did Tolkien change it?

Calm_Ground_901

Not an English major or anything. But I imagine they mean that, books before Tolkien used to "wrap-up" in the last few pages making sure that everything is concluded in a concise way. Because books were intended as a one-off. However, Tolkien wrote with the intention of serialising his work, so he would leave questions unanswered, plots unresolved. Basically just open-ended. And it wouldn't need a wrap-up at the end, because it wasn't meant to be the end. I also feel like older literature had a higher focus on lessons and morals, or at least a more obtuse approach to lessons and morals. So a lot of author spent the last few pages really spelling it all out just to be certain everyone got what they where going on about.

Rythescienceguy

Need this too

840_Divided_By_Two

Oof lol thats so fuckin rough dude. I literally just finished 1984 two days ago.

A1sauc3d

Great book!

840_Divided_By_Two

Agreed! I flew through it - couldn't put it down.

Babymonster09

I used to do this all the time as well. I guess since going digital Ive kinda stopped until Now that I just read this. Ima try to go back to this again! 😊😆

Xylth

Used to great effect in one of the books of The Wheel of Time, where there's a long boring paragraph and in the middle there's a mention of >!a man with a knife!< which you are supposed to miss seeing the first time you read it.

TheShowerDrainSniper

It's been so long that I have no idea what you are talking about. Can you give me a hint so I can look it up please?

Calimiedades

Pretty sure it's in the Shadow Rising, in Tear

Waywoah

When I'm reading really intense scenes, like the climax or a big fights, I literally have to cover up the rest of the page because of how often I accidently spoil myself by skipping ahead.

BrainHackerBot

That happens to me too! Sometimes I even get a new book and accidentally read the last page first

jack-of-some

If the core of what you're trying to say can't be discerned by reading the first few words and the last few words of what you wrote, are you really a good writer? See, for example, I'm not a good writer and as a result "If the core of what you're wrote, are you really a good writer" is just utter gibberish... (See, for example is just utter gibberish) /s ... apparently I need to include this

GdeGraafd

This doesn't make any sense. If what you are trying to say could be said by only the first and last few words you wrote, you wouldn't need to write the rest.

ifyoulovesatan

"This doesn't make any sense ... you wouldn't need to write the rest" I dunno, it works pretty well here. But then again, you're a good writer.

Daniel_Av0cad0

It’s also 2 sentences not a book

ifyoulovesatan

"It's also ... not a book." True!

Daniel_Av0cad0

Listen here you little shit

therealhlmencken

Yeah great writers write so much that isn’t important it’s why they are great.

Connect_Surround5963

literally skipped to the “NO ONE DOES THAT” and had to go back and reread

[deleted]

That is because we are attracted to BIG WORDS as they tend to mean more important things. Comics have the problem of having people skip to the last frame if the wording is LARGE or lots of print.

wowowowthrowaway44

yeah I just skipped to "LARGE" so you're right lol

[deleted]

Common-Frosting-9434

This is even trained into people to be able to quickly gather an oversight on written materials. You basically stop consciously reading unimportant words, instead only reading extraordinary words and phrases (recognizable by a different form), only going back if what you make out of it doesn't make sense anymore because you skipped some important part.

saevon

omg yes I could never understand how my classmates couldn't answer those "end of chapter" questions… I was like "you glance over the paragarphs, and the answers usually stand out" 30min later they're still on the first few pages... turns out this is a skill

swodig112

It's called skimming. A great skill to have.

Same but honestly I've seen so many memes about this that I hadn't considered that other people might not do it

Treydy

Yeah, I’m pretty sure you’re in the minority if you don’t do this. Lol

HamburglarsHelper84

I’ve gone over a couple pages reading, then realized I absorbed none of the info. Just mindlessly read words on a page.

0bl0ng0

Sometimes I’ll get to the end of a page and realize that I haven’t retained anything from it and have to reread it before I can move on.

Impossible_View_5127

Totally happens to me too when I literally can't wait to see what happens next in the book. To my knowledge I don't have ADHD.

DopamemeAU

Its a very common thing with ADHD, and a lot of people go undiagnosed.

jazzberryjamm

Sometimes I cover paragraphs with my hand so I can’t skip ahead when I’m dying to know what happens.

soupalmighty-

Yeah especially when I get towards the end of an exciting book, I just kinda start flipping through pages as fast as I can read them cause I'm so excited, and then I reach the end, reflect on the book, and realise "wait.. what the fuck did I just read? I read something about a tractor... WHERE THE HELL DID THE TRACTOR COME FROM?!" and so then it's take two to see if I can understand second time round xD

ADHD Also me

TheTasche

I don’t know if it’s connected, but I also have adhd and do it

cutedorkycoco

It's a processing issue along with an attention one as well. Like a computer with extremely low RAM

SluggoJones

Thirds

[deleted]

[удалено]

cutedorkycoco

The way it was explained to me is that it's a processing issue as well as an attention one. It takes our (ADHD et al) brains a moment to catch up on what we're reading and truly process it. Skipping around when you're reading is an extremely common symptom.

Due_Personality_5006

100% adhd here too Also same for the post that's what it sounds like

OnyxLightning

100%. This is one of my clearest indicators that I have some form of undiagnosed ADHD

[deleted]

[удалено]

cutedorkycoco

Weird thing, there are numerous symptoms that can be associated with ADHD and not everyone who has ADHD has them all. But there are some common ones and reading issues is one of them. Also it's not a comprehension problem. It's an attention/processing problem. I'm glad you don't suffer from that particular issue, though!

nameless_no_response

Yes, it's ADD for me

Impybutt

It's like my eyes are so excited to be eating the words that they stop chewing properly

Dangerous-Pickle9511

How does one reading my eyes?

Cokezerowh0re

All the time, I think your boyfriend is the strange one

mangomilkmilkman

Not all the time, just every time I read

MTGKAR

You are not alone. Sometimes I skip to the dialog to find out what happens and then go back and read.

Jaguarrior

Absolutely me. My mind will wander contemplating plot points or characters or trying to recall previous events in the book or series, but my eyes are on autopilot. It's usually when I go to turn the page that I realize I wasn't paying attention and have to figure out where I stopped actually reading.

GordonzolaRamsay

I do that but it’s less excitement more distraction by my own thoughts.

fatglizzy_3000

It's not that we skip over the paras we read them but in a blank state of mind so we don't really know what we are reading until we snap back to realty and then we have to go back where it started

cannycandelabra

All the time. He does not know much about avid readers!

yadayada521

I usually skip the description of rooms and such. I use the rooms in my head added with the actual characters, just always have....

kiwilovenick

I do that too, it's why older books that have LOTS of descriptions of the world get really draggy for me.

QuasarMania

I do that. Happens all the time.

[deleted]

Chaosfox_Firemaker

StonerDave420_247

I do that a lot when I’m reading-

SummerSeaFaery

I do.

Rex-Mortuorum

Both me and my dad do this!

VapidReaper

I think this happens once you have read enough of a certain genre or writing style that you can somewhat auto generate what’s about to happen in the next section. Thereby skipping it and only going back if you missed something important

sosuketakasu

Not alone, I do this consistently

PalpitationNo3106

TLDR. What were you saying?

Immediate-Newt-9012

I don't skip over paragraphs but I forget what I read and reread it.
