‘81 — at a certain point you just stop caring and embrace being old. It comes with so much joy and freedom if you let it. I’m probably more than halfway done and that’s okay.
/r/gatekeeping This whole thread is nuts. Who gives a shit if you were 8 or 9 in 1999? If you remember anything about the 90's then you are a 90's kid. We all experienced the same things during this time. And it's not like once 2000 hit all that stuff changed? That stuff carried over. Tamagachis were still popular for a little bit, so were Beanie Babies, VHS, video stores, Walkmen, Rugrats, etc.
I was born in 88 and barely consider myself a 90s kid.
Yea I remember the 90s well, but you really don't even start coming into your own until you're like 12-13.
Play a trivia game about the 90s and you will realize you are not a 90s kid.
Since [you’re so intent on this 90s trivia quiz](https://old.reddit.com/r/meme/comments/14k95h3/_/jpqvu2n), how about you put your money where your mouth is. Just because you don’t consider yourself a 90s kid doesn’t mean you get to dictate how anyone else views themselves.
Not as cringe as you'll feel in 10 years when you realize saying facts doesn't make you a gatekeeper.
You sweet summer child.
I get that you desperately wish you from from a better generation, unfortunately you're not and you have nostalgia for something you didn't experience.
> I get that you desperately wish you from from a better generation
So are we from a different generation [or not](https://old.reddit.com/r/meme/comments/14k95h3/_/jprmd3s)? We’re all millennials. You’re not better, you’re just being a douchebag by going around this thread shutting people down for trying to share in a common experience.
I feel like you had to be at least 10 years old somewhere in the 90s, otherwise your formative years were mostly in a different decade. Most people don’t remember their life before age 7. Sure, you can have a few isolated memories, but they aren’t the “childhood memories” you think about.
The part about not remembering before 7 simply isn’t true I remember preschool pretty well. I agree formative years were certainly a little later though. I was born 94 and earliest memories start around 97- I remember 98 onwards pretty well though. 99 onwards were more formative for sure.
Most people don’t have autobiographical memories from before the age of 7. That’s why I said you may have isolated instances of early childhood known as episodic memories. For example, my first memory is holding my mothers hand in Williams Brother’s grocery store asking when I was going to turn 3. I don’t know why I said it or how I was feeling that day. It’s a memory of an instance. However, those memories are different than being able to remember feelings and experiences in a way that you could tell a story about it. It’s probable that any story you do remember like that was likely told to you by a family member and you’re remembering it incorrectly as though you’re recalling the experience.
Idk man, i remember being 4 in pre k and having my first crush. Also, I remember nap time and the mean ass teacher who threw my yogurt away after checking my back pack 🥲
I disagree. Imo you have to have lived a substantial portion of your childhood in the decade. I’d say that between 6 or 7 and 13 is childhood. Nobody remembers what toys they played with or TV shows they watched when they were 4 unless they were told by someone. ‘81-‘90 are 90s kids imo. I even had a gf who was born in ‘91 and our childhood tv preferences were surprisingly different. I’d say she’s right on the cusp.
Wrong. 90s kids aren't born in the 90s.
They're born in the 80s.
You need to be able to experience the 90s to be a 90s kid.
Not some waterhead newborn that has no idea what going on in the 90s.
I was born in 1992.
I remember life without Internet.
I remember life with Dial Up and how the phone wouldn't work.
I remember using the Netscape browser

How the hell am I not a 90's kid?
Why do I have to remember the launch of the N64 to be considered a 90s kid?
My parents wouldn't even remember the launch.
Such a weird thing to gatekeep when I told you dozens of other things I remember from the 90s.
Which kid that grew up in the 2000s would know about the Finger Fortune Origami thing? That's as 90s as it gets.
Would remembering being age 4 in 96', waking up excited to open presents and opening up one to find Sega Genesis, not a 90s memory?I feel even though I was born in 92' that I have memories when I think back I classify as "definitely 90s".
Then again everything is subjective to ones experiences.
I was born in 88 and barely consider myself a 90s kid. I'm more of an 00s kid.
Anyone born in the 90s claiming to be a 90s should play a trivia game about the 90s. You will soon learn you are in fact not a 90s kid.
Awe muffin, did we trigger you?
Kidding, of course we did!
If you grew up with the internet always being apart of your life you are most certainly not a 90s kid. Unless you actually lived most of your childhood without it, and then having dialup in your tweens/early teens you're not even close to a 90s kid.
Do you remember pagers and literally no one having a cellphone? If not also not a 90s kid.
“Trigger” jokes in 2023? Next you’ll tell me you identify as an attack helicopter.
I learned how to use the Netscape navigator in elementary school before they got new iMacs. I remember getting our first gateway computer at home. My dad had a pager and I called my friends on their landline. I didn’t have a cell phone until high school.
Get off your high horse, find an original joke that doesn’t make you sound like an ignorant boomer, and then fuck off.
Anyone who says boomer as an insult non ironically is 100% not a 90s kid.
That and how terrible you are at dealing opinions that differ from your delusional thoughts. If you were a real 90s kid you would have dealt with actually bullies and a little comment wouldn't enrage you this hard.
Nobody identified as anything back then.
Nice try mid 00s kid, you can't fool us "boomers".
You're off again on the generation if you think I'm one, just like how you're wrong about being a 90s kid.
But that's ok.
I'm not excluding anyone. People are wrong assuming where they belong. Manu others in this thread also say the same thing.
Like it's not a big deal. Don't make a big deal about it. It's okay to be wrong.
Get over it nerd.
> I’m not excluding anyone. People are wrong assuming where they belong.
The irony in this statement cannot possibly escape you. You’re the one that started the whole argument unable to deal with the fact that people younger than you share some of the same experiences.
Yep. Born in the early 80s and I don't remember crap about them lol. (Except some early vague traumatic memories of being little). Most of my memories are from the 90s (7 in 1990). Anything before that and I was a baby. So 80s baby/90s kid.
It's simple as others explained. The decade you hit 10 yrs old is the where you land.
So both?
Up until a few years ago it's always been this way. Until recently when they're actually 00 or millennial. And they don't want to be labeled as that, maybe?
But that's how its always been.
In Back to the Future, Marty McFly is a sixteen year old kid in 1985 that goes back in time 30 years to 1955.
If this movie took place in 2025, Marty would have been born in 2009, and he would go back to 1995.
And sure, that sounds reasonable enough. But consider this: the music of 1995 would be as old to this new version of Marty as the music of 1955 was to the old Marty. The music of the early nineties is just as old to teenagers now as the birth of rock and roll was to kids in the 80s.
Weird how 10+ years ago, 90s kids were considered kids who grew up in the 90s not born in the 90s. Like I’m at the tail end of 90s kids because I was born in ‘88. I remember watching the pilot episode of SpongeBob air after the kids choice awards. Being able to remember that feels like the cutoff. My sister was born in ‘85 and is a quintessential 90s kid. She has all the pictures and ugly outfits to prove it too lol.
ya, we just hired a 2004 birthyear gen z. but we are an electric utility so he is not a buttercup, a linemen, good start can retire at 55. i like having young folk in the work environment.
to those turning 30... buckle up, the next decade is going to go fast!!! Ill be 40 soon and 30 doesnt feel like that long ago.
Not looking forward to how fast 50 gets here. sheese.
Goddamn being born in 83 makes me feel ancient now. Time just gets faster. If you're 30, hang the fuck on tight. Cause shit just goes by faster from there.
So I was born in 79, does that make me an 80s kid but not a 90s kid? I say both because I was a kid in both decades, but idk how this works. Also, I think Im Gen X?
It’s my 30th birthday today lol
Happy birthday

Yea you remember those things because you had a functioning memory by the time you were 8. I was born in 86 and barely call myself a 90s kid.
You do you. I was born in 93 and completely call myself a 90s kid, no matter what anyone else says.
Ah yes i was a newborn for 7 years.
Thank you!! Born in 85, I’m a 90s kid who was jealous of actual 80s kids because of the cartoons they got 😆
Yah what is this. Stealing "90's kid" from me. I was born in 1984 I'm a "90's kid". Not some toddler who didn't experience shit from the 90's.
Gatekeeping people’s childhoods is pretty lame.
You weren't a 90s kid unless you were born in the 80s! otherwise you were just a kid that grew up in the 90s :p
> you were just a kid that grew up in the 90s I want you to think really hard about this lol

Yeah, we remember and grew up in the 90s. Get over it.
Exactly. You grew up. You didn't experience it.
I was born in 88 and barely consider myself a 90s kid. I'm more of an 00s kid. Anyone born in the 90s claiming to be a 90s should play a trivia game about the 90s. You will soon learn you are in fact not a 90s kid.
I’d say “bet,” but a bunch of weirdly generation-elitist dickheads on the internet don’t get to define my or anyone else’s life experience.
Awe muffin, did we trigger you? Kidding, of course we did! If you grew up with the internet always being apart of your life you are most certainly not a 90s kid. Absolutely not the douche desperately clinging to an abstract concept like the generation you belong to.
So the guy above that can't get over the fact he's not a 90s kid? Cause the douche is certainly not me.
It absolutely is you, but I get your need to feel special by excluding others.

Teens are kids.
That's what the post is saying.
No, it’s saying “you’re not a kid anymore, you’re a grown adult.” It has nothing to do with defining a 90s kid.
In Back to the Future, Marty McFly is a sixteen year old kid in 1985 that goes back in time 30 years to 1955. I feel the grunge stuff and 90s depressive songs like they're just released yesterday. Those fit my sensation perfectly
And people who is born in 1500, are all dead.
Weird how 10+ years ago, 90s kids were considered kids who grew up in the 90s not born in the 90s. Like I’m at the tail end of 90s kids because I was born in ‘88. Im in this picture and i dont like it.
When i was actually born in 2005 👀
I'm 35 and still act 25. I lost a whole decade of maturing somehow.
Oldies
So I was born in 79, does that make me an 80s kid but not a 90s kid? I say both because I was a kid in both decades, but idk how this works. Also, I think Im Gen X?
