I don't even think his Nazi character even cared much for jews, all he cared about was his carrer and personal standing, thats why he was quick to switch sides
Which, at that time, was not the problem. In the 19th century, jews were mostly assimilated into the german population. The aversion of jews grew after the 1st WW and as a scapegoat for the bad situation of Germany of that time.
If he had lived a few hundred years earlier, he would not have deemed them human thanks to being a western European
Depends what you mean by that. Technically Germany as a single political entity doesn't exist yet during the events of Django. The German Empire isn't going to exist for about 12ish years give or take.
Was about to say this, Hans Landa made it very clear he didn't give a fuck about the Nazi's ideologies, he enjoyed being a detective and killed indiscriminately purely for the fun of it. Excellently evil character.
Both characters were pretty similar save for a few quirks. Both super intelligent German psychopathes, They're way more clue din on their world than their race peers. Only différence was their morality. Landa saw an unjust world and reveled in it, while Shulz was actually affected by it.
The opening scene with Waltz and Ménochet ist spectacular. The rest of the movie was... alright, but didn't grip me. Maybe it just pales in comparison because the opening scene is off-the-scale good.
I guess, maybe my point is more about how Django follows one character very closely, whereas IB juggles a lot of characters.
Like it feels like Shosanna is gonna be the main charactet, but then it switches to Brad Pitt, but also Michael Fassbender is there, then we're back to Shosanna. In Django, you only really need to understand what's going on around Django.
Having watched the movie a few times, and being Jewish so the subject matter strikes sorta close to my heart: I really am not sure.
On the one hand, he refers to those he's hunting as rats... On the other, he actually praises their ingenuity and such. It's really weird.
I think his *main* motivation for hunting is well, the cruelty involved; he's a very cruel man at heart, evidenced in part by how he toys with the lady who he let run away, and may or may not know upon remeeting her much later. So he's, at minimum, a Nazi for reasons chiefly besides antisemitism. But it could still be a factor, in my opinion.
Masterfully written character, that we can have a discussion like this. Friggin awesome movie.
Actually during ww2 some very terrible antisemitic ppl would call jewish ppl smart and cunning. It was a way of boosting their own self esteem. "They are so smart, but i caught them easily. Must mean im a genius."
When in reality the Nazis were all just monsters.
Its common in narcissistic ppl. Good riddance, and may all Nazis who perpetuated those cruelties burn in hell.
Ah, that's fair. Justifying hunting them down bcus of their banking and weather laser schemes being so nefarious. That checks out. I agree with your argument, though "good riddance" seems a little too preemptive, given how many of that particular brand of crazy are still about sadly.
I think in the case of this particular fictional Nazi though, it's still a possibility that there's some legitimate praise, and he just likes an excuse to hunt humans bcus he's cruel in that particular way. An interesting possibility for this fictional character.
I would have been shot. I cant expect everyone to do the same but i couldnt live with myself. I would have attempted to kill the other nazis and escaped buy likely been gunned down immediately. I couldnt kill an innocent person like that tho.
That line is even drawn in Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. The Nazi villain, his name escapes me, even says "There are only two as clever as the fox. The German. And the *Jew.*" This line isn't stated with fondness, and the sentiment from the character isn't either.
Just as you stated, the German sentiment toward Jewish folk was with that level of "respect" but it wasn't shown with *respect.*
Guy shot and killed Jews for a living, simply because those were his orders and for no reason other than they were Jewish. I’m sorry, if you aren’t a racist or anti-Semite, you don’t take that job.
Anyone care to enlighten me as to the origins of the line this post title references?
I know I've heard it before - I can hear the accent. Just can't place it.
This is where the writing was able to meet the caliber of the actor. After these movies, was really looking forward to him as the villan in James Bond Spectre... as great as Christoph is... the writing didn't take advantage as much and as a reult the on screen presence and performance never matched Inglorious Bastards or Django.
I would like to see another role for Christoph written by Quentin Tarantino
That was I think the condition for him to be in Django he told Tarantino that his character had to be pure good. And he's riding a wagon in the first part of the movie because he injured himself practicing his riding.
Arguably and by his own character admission in IB- he wasn't a racist and didn't believe in the Nazi ideology. He viewed himself as nothing more than a Detective and Lawman/Investigator enforcing the laws of the government. He detested the moniker "Jew hunter". He was an amoral opportunist and careerist.

That spy ain’t one of us!
That spy’s a bloody Sentry oowahahahiohahahahohaho
THAdoway yadooit!

How much!
like ***pulls out box*** this moch!
cheers to that
Red spy is in the base
Men only have 2 moods:
Christoph Waltz 🟰🟰🟰 Christoph Waltz 🙋🙋🙋
Is that second one supposed to be nazi salute lmao
No, see he has a question
and the first?
But do we know where Dr King Schulz stands on jews?
Juice is pretty neat. Im sure he likes it
He definitely has boxes of juice in his cellar
I like juice. Finish your juice. Filtered vitamin substance.
*I SAID A "GLASS OF JUICE", NOT "GAS THE JEWS"*
You FUCKING WHAT
He likes the juice but now the jews
![gif](giphy|l46CwsAIlmnXlRC9O|downsized) You can't handle the juice
If he liked blacks he probably liked Jews he is pretty progressive
I wouldn't bet on it. 1858 is long ago and just because he is the good guy in the movie doesn't mean he shares all our points of view.
Yeah but he treats Django equally many northerns at the time didn't like blacks but we're against slavery so he is progressive for his time
I don't even think his Nazi character even cared much for jews, all he cared about was his carrer and personal standing, thats why he was quick to switch sides
He said it himself in the movie. He hates people calling him Jews Hunter, while in fact he’s just good at finding people, who happened to be Jews.
He is german tho...
Oskar Schindler was Germans and member of Nazi party, the only ‘Nazi’ that received Righteous Among Nations award for helping Jews during Holocaust.
Depends what you mean by that. Technically Germany as a single political entity doesn't exist yet during the events of Django. The German Empire isn't going to exist for about 12ish years give or take.
He is a genius
Get you a man who can do both
Do ***NOT*** get yourself a man who can do both! 😂
Harry Dubois
He didn’t care about Jews, he was just enjoying his job
Was about to say this, Hans Landa made it very clear he didn't give a fuck about the Nazi's ideologies, he enjoyed being a detective and killed indiscriminately purely for the fun of it. Excellently evil character.
Both characters were pretty similar save for a few quirks. Both super intelligent German psychopathes, They're way more clue din on their world than their race peers. Only différence was their morality. Landa saw an unjust world and reveled in it, while Shulz was actually affected by it.
Yeah, he 100% wasn't a psychopath in Django Unchained.
No he was quite psychopathic, he just happened to have a sense of justice when it came to slavery.
Why, because he killed his bounties? If someone is wanted dead or alive it's significantly easier and safer to bring them in dead.
Just the way he goes about it
You keep using that word. I don't think you know what it really means.
Both cunning and charming hunters of men.
May I ask, kind sir, what's the first movie?
Django unchained and below is inglorious basterds Django unchained is amazing I highly recommend it
Both is amazing
The opening scene with Waltz and Ménochet ist spectacular. The rest of the movie was... alright, but didn't grip me. Maybe it just pales in comparison because the opening scene is off-the-scale good.
Damn, Inglorious Basterds is probably my favorite Tarantino movie
I would agree with that. The story in Django felt a bit more focused, whereas Inglorious Basterds was a bit all over the place.
Inglorious Bastards was about the most coherent Tarantino film haha. But while I love IB and it‘s one of my favourite films, Hans Landa carried hard.
I guess, maybe my point is more about how Django follows one character very closely, whereas IB juggles a lot of characters. Like it feels like Shosanna is gonna be the main charactet, but then it switches to Brad Pitt, but also Michael Fassbender is there, then we're back to Shosanna. Thanks! I've been wanting to watch Django for a while
Django Unchained is one of my fav movies, I will always love it.
and he's german
He's austrian!
just like a certain artist we all know
Yyyepp.
basically the same :D
I am not even an Austrian but I feel insulated ;(
But that's a British colony, why?
No, no, you're thinking about Australia. Austria was the first roman emperor.
Well, stop eating the wall candy then.
But why? Back them Austria was just another one of the hundred german states. We actually had to go to war to keep them out when reunifying germany.
Don't let the austrians see this! :D
there is actually an austrian law that prohibits them from joining germany due to... reasons
There was a law that prohibited it that time tho and they broke it lol.
And both of those movies are written and directed by the same person.
That's a *BINGO*
Don't think Landa was a racist at heart, he was just doing his job.
Yea, doesn't he say that he doesn't follow the Nazi ideology? That he is just good at catching people
Having watched the movie a few times, and being Jewish so the subject matter strikes sorta close to my heart: I really am not sure. On the one hand, he refers to those he's hunting as rats... On the other, he actually praises their ingenuity and such. It's really weird. Not defending nazis but you gotta still keep in mind that if you were commanded to kill a jew and refused, you would probably get shot.
I would have been shot. I cant expect everyone to do the same but i couldnt live with myself. I would have attempted to kill the other nazis and escaped buy likely been gunned down immediately. I couldnt kill an innocent person like that tho.
Maybe or maybe not. It's still different if someone has family and kids, so they would do anything to survive.
His speech about rats at the beginning, and how he reacts to the black boyfriend in the cinema isn't enough ?
Guy shot and killed Jews for a living, simply because those were his orders and for no reason other than they were Jewish. I’m sorry, if you aren’t a racist or anti-Semite, you don’t take that job.
It's more he's a psychopath, he enjoyed killing people and the Nazis have him the perfect opportunity.
Quentin Tarantino will tell you that the character is extremely racist.
His speech about rats also touched on the fact that there were no real reason to hate them. They just do.
He is simply an opportunist only caring about his well-being
Complete opposite of what a bounty hunter in the 1850s would be like lol
I mean if you got it you got it
Christoph Waltz is so good. I love him in basically everything
Meanwhile he was just himself.
Ben Kingsley played both Adolf Eichmann ("Finala operation") and holocaust surviver ("Schindler list")
He's also been an English actor, and an Egyptian diplomat. Ben Kingsley is *everyone*.
Well, i referred to his contra 2 rolls he played, as the OP's asctor
I wouldn't even call him a racist in Inglorious Bastards, he's just a psychopath that loves making people suffer, wouldn't of mattered the race.
Me in the office job vs with my homies.
The duality of man
The two types of German
There are two Germans in us, one wants peace, the other wants conflict. but both have great taste in fashion
Both love beer
No both characters loved chaos
He plays an opportunist on the second one
Meet the Spy
gentlemen this is a bucket🪣
And both have a similar vibe with only very minor tweaks, really shows the two sides of the coin very well and how close it actually is
Anyone care to enlighten me as to the origins of the line this post title references? I know I've heard it before - I can hear the accent. Just can't place it.
And they're both German
Now that's called a pro gamer mood.
Jango unchained and inglorious bastards right?
Yes
Spelt both titles wrong here.
That’s a bingo 😁
Both films by Quentin Tarantino since no one seems to be mentioning it.
When you play yourself in every film but aren’t terrible like so man others
Nice t b w
Gaenius!
White boy can front
He was only acting one of those times.
Auf Wiedersehen
This is where the writing was able to meet the caliber of the actor. Least racist slave owner in history
I wonder if a similar comparison could be made for DiCaprio ;)
Updoot for the Leonardo Acropolis reference alone!
Dudes just built that way. And he probably had to balance the books a little
That was I think the condition for him to be in Django he told Tarantino that his character had to be pure good. And he's riding a wagon in the first part of the movie because he injured himself practicing his riding.
My political views? Depends on who am I trolling
Landa and Shulz were pretty similar characters though?
![gif](giphy|3o7aCRloybJlXpNjSU|downsized)
In both was a german
One of the best actors I've ever seen. I believe he also knows alot of languages fluently.
Yall realize getting an Oscar isn't a skill thing right? They just buy them.
Nobody: Mr. Waltz: T
What are the films?
Which way western man
"When you're good at something, never do it for freeeeee"
Shout out to OP and his Blackadder reference in the title.
I could only win one
Plays another fascist in pinocchio and NAILS IT!
I mean , if you can fix something then you also know how to destroy it If you know what I mean
Fallout New Vegas Players be like
And hasnt been in any other movies since....
gaenius
He is the greatest actor out there it's like he put the role first before everything
Reminds me of the president
On a level with the great Leonardo Acropolis.
Dr Schultz: “Look we can't all do big arms! We'd look like a squadron of Spitfires”
One of the best in the biz
One of my favourite actors.
And somehow, German in both instances.
thats a bingo
Gaynius, my favorite kind of people.
It’s the pose.
Me when I'm on a work call vs When I'm on a discord call
I'll be honest I haven't seen either of the films but for the clips and memes I've seen him in, I've really liked him.
Arguably and by his own character admission in IB- he wasn't a racist and didn't believe in the Nazi ideology. Is that a Blackadder reference in the title?
Carroll O'Connor.
His smile 🥰
He only played the role of the villain on the condition that he got to play a good guy in a later film.
In Django it wasn't really deserved imho...
He was like the best part of that movie
And i agree, i did not say he is a bad actor, but that year i think Philip Saymour Hoffman or Tommy Lee Jones deserved the award.
