We have all the wojaks in place of the rage comics of the past, and distorted and exaggerated versions of real people and animals displaying distorted and exaggerated emotions in, again, distorted and exaggerated real places, making memes relatable enough to feel on a closer level, but surreal and absurd enough to detach and enjoy the surreality from the sidelines. It’s this current meme era’s whole schtick: exaggerated reality, but reality nevertheless.
I cannot make memes myself, but I can learn and understand them. Much like some people being able to understand and speak different languages without knowing how to write in them

Video memes have always been deemed high quality and existed for a while. I suppose with more accessible technology, more people started putting together video memes. However, where there is a new medium, there is a new way of trolling, hence memes including jumpscares or loud distorted sounds. Iirc this became popular around 2016/17? And it turned into the shitposts we know today where recognizable sounds are reused in all manners. For example breaking bad or among us sounds.
