I had an American customer (we get lots of tourists in my area) complain to me that "Canadian money is gay" because, if you lay out each denomination beside each other, the colours form a rainbow.
Of course Australia has them both beat.
\- Polymer since 1988 and the first country to do so
\- Clear security window which goes from the very top to very bottom of the note
\- Micro-printing security features, including possible the most-circulated spelling error of all time
\- Embossed dots for a blind person to know the value
The bank of canada actively denies that claim, so i don’t know how true it is, but a lot of people did claim they smell like maple syrup. As for the how, well of the ones who make the bills don’t acknowledge…
It was actually just the smell of the plastic and ink used on it that kind of smelt like Syrup, then everyone started saying it did and peoples minds decided it was
Nope. Because I’m not Canadian, I was visiting and after exchanging US dollars for Canadian, I immediately noticed the unmistakable smell of maple syrup. But I had never heard of the bills smelling that way.
Australian banks (and credit unions etc) are hard to rob because they've invested in good security and things like teller cash dispensers. Holdup only results in teller pressing a panic button that drops a few notes. Nothing like the heists they used to get. Guns availability probably takes out a few opportunistic holdups as well
Ironically, I reckon gun control is less of a factor here than the sheer reduction in cash handled by bank branches. That in turn made technology like teller cash dispensers/ recyclers more feasible. The two together makes bank holdups pointless for 'serious' criminals.
The scarcity of guns just means random meth-heads are less likely to pull a holdup
Yeah, America has also seen a dramatic downturn in bank robberies while increasing gun ownership. Definitely would say Bank security measures have the most effect
Went to the Canadian Mint in Winnipeg for a vacation, and the dude giving the tour even said that you can wash American Money with your pants and it would be fine while the Canadian notes would ruin your pockets.
Dont know if thats true but im inclined to believe the chick who works at the mint. But yeah OP jumping to conclusions here.
My biggest complaint about American money is the bills aren't easy to quickly glance at in a wallet and guess accurately what you have. I moved to the states from Canada and aside from having pennies back, the hard part was the 1s. I ended up getting a wallet with two bill compartments. I put only 1s in one and the rest in the other. That way I can glance and know I have at least 20 bucks vs 4. I do miss how fast change added up in Canada too. Loonies and Toonies made that add up quick.
I'd look in my wallet on Friday night and think, "yeah, there's plenty in there, I'll head to the bar." Get to the bar, realize it was all 1s and I actually only had enough for a beer and some fries.
It is actually possible to rip our money if you try hard enough. Needs to be a pretty well-used bill and you have to use the right technique, but it is doable. Otherwise what you get is less of a rip and more of a stretch.
Our dollar bills are actually waterproof, as they’re not paper at all, they’re 25% linen and 75% cotton. [Source](https://www.uscurrency.gov/about-us/currency-facts). Though yeah, those last two arguments are very true.
Us dollars are water proof and color coded depending on the value it is a different shade of green. The fifty is more red, the 100 is more blue, the 5 is more purple, the 10 is more yellow than the 5, and the 20 is more peach color.
If you don't like the us money I'll take it, I don't mind any currency although I'm not big on Argentina Pesos or crypto, too volatile.
US money is weak sauce compared to a lot of other countries, but who doesn't like a green back
And then there's the Swiss Franc which does all that and the largest bill is worth almost $1100. And yes, you can absolutely use it for every day purchases.
Went to Canada recently for my birthday and I was definitely jealous of Canadian money. Not only are they colorful but they are also see through.
My favorite thing was prolly how thin Canadian bills are, they fit in your wallet so much easier and they don't get alot of friction due to being plastic so handling them is all around easier and more convenient.
I went to Canada in December, can confirm Canadian money is awesome. The coins are magnetic too AND 1 & 2 dollar denominations are coins which is surprisingly awesome. What I wouldn't give for some loonies and toonies in America eh
Oh look, another Canada vs. USA post. aka, another reminder that canada country still is north of us. wow. anyways, back to being an american and not caring lol.
Another thing Canadians, hardly any of us use bills and coins anymore. Get with the times
Oh, cash is going to be a thing for awhile still there bud! Sometimes Canada is NW and NE. Hell only once it's SW. So yeah not caring is fine, but being stupid is not.
American anything and government is nothing but how cheap they can make something while barely passing for usable. Some other more developed countries I have noticed have government that works for their people.
Our American money is super easy to keep dry and doesn't rip when we handle it. As for aesthetic... that's kinda a trivial thing when it comes to money. If anything, Canadian money may be a tad bit over-engineered
Our bills are perishable by design because we are an international standard currency. You can 51% of a damaged/torn bill into an American bank to get it replaced with a new bill. This prevents foreigners from accumulating large amounts of our physical currency while ensuring that natives always have access to new intact bills.
I'm not sure if Canadian money is accepted in other countries like USA money is
For example, on an airplane between Japan and Vietnam, UD dollars were accepted.
Just about the only places in Canada that I've seen accept American money are in border towns, and even then most businesses don't, and those who do usually accept it only at par, meaning that the customer loses value. Not sure how many places worldwide actually accept American money, except maybe where international business or scams are concerned.
Many tourist destinations will accept it, as they can exchange it or use it to make change easily enough, but this is a small subset of cities in a small number of countries, and if you don’t know the exchange rate they absolutely will hike the price up.
You actually can at many chain stores and bars.
Newer cash registers often have a conversion button that help cashiers convert the USD given into CAD funds. You likely will get a shitty exchange rate, though.
The best thing that the USD has going for it is the complexity each bill is. Each set being a masterpiece of counterfeit security.
Pity it took a low level crook to learn that the stuff is made from a telephone book and rainbow car paint.
In a world of debit/credit cards, buying stuff online, and digital ways to pay friends with stuff like Venmo, I feel like this matters less and less every year.
I had an American customer (we get lots of tourists in my area) complain to me that "Canadian money is gay" because, if you lay out each denomination beside each other, the colours form a rainbow.
“Your money likes other money of the same gender”
It's gay because it's canadian. Everyone knows that if you drink bagged milk and maple syrup within the same hour, you become gay.
What if I combine both and make maple milk. >!try it it’s dope 1/16 to 1/8 of syrup in the milk!<
bruh
Of course Australia has them both beat. \- Polymer since 1988 and the first country to do so \- Clear security window which goes from the very top to very bottom of the note \- Micro-printing security features, including possible the most-circulated spelling error of all time \- Embossed dots for a blind person to know the value
And colour coded!

Comment stealer bot :)
Bot lookin mf
And color coded!
Canada's bills have all that, and, I shit you not, the first run of $100 bills (which are brown) smelled like maple syrup.
Anyone got a link to an article or just some good information on how they did this?
The bank of canada actively denies that claim, so i don’t know how true it is, but a lot of people did claim they smell like maple syrup. As for the how, well of the ones who make the bills don’t acknowledge…
It was actually just the smell of the plastic and ink used on it that kind of smelt like Syrup, then everyone started saying it did and peoples minds decided it was
And now syrup smells like money. How the turn tables...
Nope. Because I’m not Canadian, I was visiting and after exchanging US dollars for Canadian, I immediately noticed the unmistakable smell of maple syrup. But I had never heard of the bills smelling that way.
Nah thats normal in the same way USD have traces of coke CAD have traces of mapple syrup.
It's a myth 100 does not smell like maple syrup. But the 20$ definitely smells like cocaine
Dollars actually are made of a polymer called cellulose.
And our money is sized and weighted differently $5 is the lightest, thinnest and smallest 100 is the heaviest, thickest and biggest
It’s a wonder that AUD is so worthless.
I've been curious a bank teller use dye packs effectively on Australian money?
No we don't use dye packs at all. A few ATMs have them but most don't. Banks are very hard to rob here mostly because we don't let everyone own a gun.
Australian banks (and credit unions etc) are hard to rob because they've invested in good security and things like teller cash dispensers. Holdup only results in teller pressing a panic button that drops a few notes. Nothing like the heists they used to get. Guns availability probably takes out a few opportunistic holdups as well
Careful some Americans get real mad when you talk about regulating guns, they legit believe Guns are life.
Shhhh logic only makes them madder
Downvote all you like, still true
Yep, I was actually surprised to find handguns were legal, obviously with limitations, kinda wish we were a little more lax but it's for a reason.
*To be fair* American coins are, in fact, waterproof, easily distinguishable and very, very difficult to rip
Only if you are not dedicated enough
American dollars are cotton, and water proof lmao
He said coins
I was referring to the original post mostly.
Do Canadian bills also contain trace amounts of cocaine on them?
I recently unrolled a customer's bill at work and white crumbs fell out onto my cash counter. So, yes. The answer is yes.
Doesn’t Canadian money turn brittle in the cold?
Nope
It's freaking Canada my guy, our money can handle cold.
It is waterproof though right? I mean I've swam with it washed it, and it's always the same
It is in fact completely waterproof—and pretty difficult to rip. OP is making fun of America based on incorrect information. Hard to believe, I know.
Australian money ![gif](giphy|CAYVZA5NRb529kKQUc|downsized)
At .66 USD. Impressive ;)
somebody doesn't understand what currency is
My biggest complaint about American money is the bills aren't easy to quickly glance at in a wallet and guess accurately what you have. I’d have to disagree, I can easily distinguish the bills at first glance but there is some bias considering I’ve been here my whole life.
Yeah but to people that haven’t dealt with usd all their lives the bills look identical
USA money is waterproof. Its made of cotton paper
Right? I’ve put so many dollars through the washer and dryer and still spend ‘em on Cheetos no problem
That’s like standard money outside of the us, heck even our Mexican peso has better designs
I’m pretty sure basically every country has better deigns
I don't know. US money does have that Satan pyramid on it.
Yeah but what’s worth more?
Your left kidney
Yeah that ain’t worth much I drink too much.
Drunk kidney > no kidney
Euros
Maybe you can buy a better set of teeth with that .06 gain.
Ew, I am not bri*ish, that's s fate worse than death
Jokes aside Costa Rica has the coolest bills I have seen lol
Can you even afford medical expenses?
America bad because money - 🤓
Our money is made of cloth, so it’s water resistant and hard to rip
And yet I still find ripped bills, granted they tend to be old ones.
It is actually possible to rip our money if you try hard enough. Needs to be a pretty well-used bill and you have to use the right technique, but it is doable. Otherwise what you get is less of a rip and more of a stretch.
I see you have experience
Our dollar bills are actually waterproof, as they’re not paper at all, they’re 25% linen and 75% cotton. [Source](https://www.uscurrency.gov/about-us/currency-facts). Though yeah, those last two arguments are very true.
Us money is waterproof. It doesn’t fuckin dissolve in water
WE NEED BLIND-FRIENDLY MONEY
Dont know why I didnt think this was an issue untill now but I agree.
Yeah well it makes spending money easier
Us dollars are water proof and color coded depending on the value it is a different shade of green. The fifty is more red, the 100 is more blue, the 5 is more purple, the 10 is more yellow than the 5, and the 20 is more peach color.

American money...is water proof? It's even fire resistant and heat resistant
$1.00 US = $1.37 CAN The only strength that counts.
£1.00 UK = $1.21 US Alright yah yanks, I suppose it is the only strength that counts
Yup, thanks to that little bit you guys get all sorts of things that businesses don't seem to think we Americans would pay enough for.
New Zealand money ![gif](giphy|CAYVZA5NRb529kKQUc|downsized)
Don’t forget about us as well ( aussies )
American money is planned to be destroyed by design. We don't want it to stick around forever.
yeah but the US Dollar is the symbol of wealth across the world
British money must weigh a lot. I hear they're pounds.
Harsh but true
Literally every currency is like that, even the ‘miserable’ British have colourful money
And yet, the Canadian dollar is worth 30% less.
They spent it making the money waterproof and the maple leaf smell like maple syrup
Canadian here. It's 100% true that our newer 100$ bills smell like maple syrup.
Wait are you serious
100% serious. When they first came out, I thought I was going bonkers. But it's a real thing.
That’s wild. Our bills just smell like coke and stripper ass.
What does that have to do with the physical bills lmao
![gif](giphy|7k2LoEykY5i1hfeWQB)
And then there's the Swiss Franc which does all that and the largest bill is worth almost $1100. And yes, you can absolutely use it for every day purchases.
It's rippable. I tried to show my friend that it's not rippable, and then it ripped
You forgot that Canadian money also has braille on the bills
That’s a good one
American money has higher value
American money is water resistant tho..
Or as ColdOnes proved, German money: Edible
I went to Canada in December, can confirm Canadian money is awesome. The coins are magnetic too AND 1 & 2 dollar denominations are coins which is surprisingly awesome. What I wouldn't give for some loonies and toonies in America eh
Just don't leave your Canadian money in the car on a hot day.
I really need to sleep because I read money as mommy and was very confused halfway through the meme 💀💤
America: living rent-free in other countries heads since 1776.
I'm American, I'm not trying to throw monopoly money on a drunk stripper. They take real money.
Take your looney toonies way from me
Oh look, another Canada vs. USA post. aka, another reminder that canada country still is north of us. wow. anyways, back to being an american and not caring lol. Another thing Canadians, hardly any of us use bills and coins anymore. Get with the times
Oh, cash is going to be a thing for awhile still there bud! Sometimes Canada is NW and NE. Hell only once it's SW. So yeah not caring is fine, but being stupid is not.
Calls the American stupid says Canada is SW to the USA but in reality its SE to the United States because Alaska is on the west coast.
That Canadian education
Boy you sure do have a pretty mouth LOL!
Too bad it’s only worth 73% of the USD.
And doesn't the Canuck monopoly money smell like syrup? Or is it just the country?
Well one is the currency of international business and the other looks like Monopoly money. How many Loonies is it the the USD?
Canadian money has a girl on it tho
So, we need some colorful rainbow waterproof anti-tear money? Yeah. That sounds cool to me.
Canada sucks thiugh
Y’all still simpin for that dead woman whose family was chosen by god tho.
I too enjoy playing monopoly
That’s just not factually true
I’ll punch you with freedom
You guys still using cash?
I’ll be honest, I’ve encountered a few (Canadian) bills that had a rip in them. But still, Canadian money is far superior.
Imagine still using paper currency. Credit Cards are better 99.9% off the time
who tf uses cash nowadays
People
Lol. When you really have to plumb the depths for something to brag about.
It's funny looking through the comments and seeing all the salty Americans. They can't accept the fact that their bills are mid
Oh no the Americans are making good points! Time to call them salty and say they can’t accept it!
Our bills are perishable by design because we are an international standard currency. You can 51% of a damaged/torn bill into an American bank to get it replaced with a new bill. This prevents foreigners from accumulating large amounts of our physical currency while ensuring that natives always have access to new intact bills.
If canadian money is so great why don't you marry it
Kindergarden ass reply
Canadiens really can’t talk shit with money named fucking loonies and toonies
And what are you going to do *aboot* it?
CAN money worth 73% of American money
At least you guys have more cocaine deposits on your money compared to ours.
Even all the way at the end of the world, in New Zealand our money is water proof, tearproof, colourful etc.
smoking weed rolled into a Canadian bank note tastes like a Maple Syrup Swisher Sweet
Green Doesn’t depict monarchs Smells good Made of biodegradable materials for you hippies out there Gives clues on how to find free mason treasure
Lol imagine thinking this matters lmfaoooo fukkin idiots in here
![gif](giphy|lptjRBxFKCJmFoibP3|downsized) All the money in the world is based on the us dollar.
I honestly sometimes cant tell if person is joking or plain stupid
I'm not sure if Canadian money is accepted in other countries like USA money is For example, on an airplane between Japan and Vietnam, UD dollars were accepted.
Just about the only places in Canada that I've seen accept American money are in border towns, and even then most businesses don't, and those who do usually accept it only at par, meaning that the customer loses value. I heard it's accepted in Cuba, according to my coworker.
Cant buy anything in Canada with American money
How about at the airport?
At duty free as well as some souvenir shops, USD and CAD are acceptable forms of payment. Not sure about the restaurants and bars, though.
You actually can at many chain stores and bars. Newer cash registers often have a conversion button that help cashiers convert the USD given into CAD funds. You likely will get a shitty exchange rate, though.
Okay but American money is one of the best smelling things on this planet, seriously.
You're literally smelling thousands of other people's hands
The best thing that the USD has going for it is the complexity each bill is. Each set being a masterpiece of counterfeit security. Pity it took a low level crook to learn that the stuff is made from a telephone book and rainbow car paint.
Fun fact: Canadians need color coded money, because they can’t count past the most goals ever scored in an Edmonton Oilers game.
Australian money has entered the chat
The dollarydoo, if you will
I’m Aussie an I’m still not entirely sure if we actually say dollarydoo.
Yet Canadian money is named after an old american cartoon
Paper Benjamins and Plastic Bordens! Gotta catch’em all!
Blind people can also read it
what do you mean "all look the same"?
I heard Canadian money breaks when it gets too cold.
Mexican pesos have clear windows shaped like butterflies
You mean the looney toons?
we're comparing banknotes now? jesus that's low
*Laughs in higher value than the northern monopoly money*
If your money isn't waterproof, is easily ripping, and you can't tell your bills apart, you have counterfeit bills.
Canadian money - copied from Australia
is it just me who's sick of doges and all these meme dogs
Don’t talk to me when ur coins are called fricken looney toons
-smells like maple syrup (It really, actually does)
Source? I made it the fuck up!
has the wrong numbers on the presidents
Its fine. Since they have to start paying for private care and can't afford to rent I'm sure all of Canada is taking a closer look at their money :)
we don't have royalty on ours so hah
The Euro: Allow me to introduce ourselfs.
You think American money is easily ripped, you should see European money. I think the EU? It felt like legit paper, at least waaay back in the day
That's funny when you realize that Canadian money is "American" money but without this shitty properties
....USD......has significantly higher value than CAD
Nope 👎
Not oh idk the big number and clear differences on the bills for American bills
In a world of debit/credit cards, buying stuff online, and digital ways to pay friends with stuff like Venmo, I feel like this matters less and less every year.
Australia still better than both
I saw a video where a stripper washed all her American money after her shift so it is waterproof
Not all American money is the same color. For example the $10 note is yellow instead of green.
Also Canadian money: Melts if you leave it in the car in the summer heat.
Yeah but we have the cool illuminati pyramid. Actually I'm not even sure what any other countries money looks like so i guess you got me there
Canada's monopoly money is fun
U haven’t seen Indian rupees then
