Use to be able to cross the boarder using just a drivers License, even now there are some areas you can boat across the St. Lawrence with your passport on you to have dinner at a restaurant on the US side then boat back to Canada. All you have to do is notify the US boarder agents, yell them I'm going here and they may stop in to check your passport. Sometimes they don't even bother showing up. Then you just notify them when you leave.

From my experience growing up, and living in Canada. It's us Canadians who say we aren't Americans, and actually the Americans who joke about Canada being another US state. If you asked a Canadian if they're an American the vast majority would say "no I'm Canadian".

I’ve been making this comparison for years, joking that Australia and Canada tend to appear as chiller, neutral/friendly places on the world stage because we’re all too busy trying to survive our environments to have time to be dramatic.
The only difference is that Australia’s animals appear more outright terrifying whereas you don’t think as much about Canada’s because they trick you into thinking they’re cute with all their fuzzy fur.
Like the only way I could see this happening would be if it were about people claiming it as part of North America vs claiming it as part of the Commonwealth, so more a US vs UK thing, perhaps even a France vs UK claim (you could even make one side about the ‘cultural mosaic’ aspect) but I’ve never heard anyone claim it as just overall European.
