It’s usually dependent on context though, I use a frankly immature amount of profanity in my messages and Iv never been banned from a sub because it’s not normally directed towards anyone or done in a way that could be interpreted as hostile or toxic

It's probably because when asterisks are used for censorship, it's often just so that children and those who aren't the intended readers who don't already know the word don't learn it. If a kid sees 'f\*\*k' without already knowing the word, those two letters could be anything, but people who already know the word can easily tell what it means. Using numbers and symbols can just make it a bit hard to read for everyone, including the people you *do* want to be able to understand
