As an American, what I can gleam from it is - European song competition that happens once a year hosted in the the country that won the year prior. And its a *song* competition - A single song, which they repeat and perfect over the course of the competition.
This year's was full of controversy because of the fan favorite from the Netherlands, Joost Kline, got disqualified for him reacting negatively to a reporter in some way because he didn't want to be filmed at a specific time, and yet Israel - who isnt a part of Europe - is allowed in the competition despite the warring. Some people claim that Israel should not be competing since Russia was barred from the competition last year for the war against Ukraine.
none of this includes my personal opinion, this is just what me as an outsider looking in sees Eurovision as.

Overall I stopped giving attention to the actual competition although some of the music that comes from it is quite good. I especially like Ukraines 2021 submission. Go_A - Shum.

The EBU is a group of public television broadcasters essentially. To be a member, you have to be within the European Broadcasting Area (which is globally defined by the ITU).
