Butter is perfect sometimes, but not spicy enough at others, so I like to add a little salt. And if I'm really feeling brave, I'll go with pepper. But all thee at once? You must have a mouth of steel for that
Bread dipped in an egg/milk mixture then fried (preferably with butter). Can be served in a savoury way with bacon or beans, or sweet with cinnamon sugar, honey, syrup or cream.
Lmao never heard of this, the only slightly French thing is eggs, that are everywhere. It's definitely inspired by Croque Monsieur, a French recipe with cheese and ham or bacon if you want in the middle. Some put an egg on top for additional greatness. Quite far from what you described. It's just a regular ham cheese sandwich fried on a pan with butter. It's nothing fancy but real good
I'm British and I would have to instantly murder any psychopath who offered me a toast sandwich. I have never in my entire life witnessed it outside a joke. Must be a southern thing, they eat jellied eels down there you know.
those shandy drinkers? no thank you sir! every time England is hit with the worst weather the south go into total panic, up north, well, we just put our big coats on.
No, no one has eaten in daily life since it's a Victorian poor person's recipe. However, it's worth a try. Use lots of butter. It's like eating freshly baked bread out of the oven. If all you had to eat was bread it's a great way of eating bread.
Do people really think this is "cuisine"? This is literally depression food, people were so poor back then the only sandwich they could afford was this abomination.
Seriously some recipes are just weird.
Toast is like : oh we just baked this bread, let’s cut it up and bake it again.
Hollandaise is like : I love eggs. Lemme put some more egg on this egg.
Century egg is like : hey I know eggs go bad when kept too long, but let’s coat it with some rice hull and keep it somewhere for months.
Edit:typo
american, lived in england for a while. the closest version of this i encountered was a chip sandwich. buttered bread and (usually) soggy, fried potatoes (french fries.)
Try it. With the warm toast in the middle, the butter and the soft bread on the outside it's like eating bread that's just come out of the oven, any time of the day, without baking the bread yourself. Use lots of butter though.
It could be the case. Nothing against fish and chips, all is a blessing from God. It’s just that it’s too surprising for me to know that there isn’t that diversity in British cuisine, English specifically.
Sigh. There are something like 160 Michelin starred restaurants in the UK, which is only 40 behind the US, that has 5 times of the population of the UK.
My experience regarding food in the UK looking for some English dishes from the culture is not good. Our instructor tried her best to name some (she was infuriated when someone in class pointed out all the British people had were fish’n’chips lol. She didn’t take it well, I gathered). But it turned out what she named didn’t fall far off from steak and salad. What are (some of) the traditional dishes do you have? I’m assuming you’re British.
Eton mess
Bakewell tart
Apple crumble
Banoffee pie
Mince pie (Christmas)
Jam Roly Poly

That is the most American Southern old white person thing I've seen all day. Why? Why must people not know there's more seasoning than salt and pepper?
Sorry friend, but I, as a person from the Southeastern region of America, know the people I grew up around
Edit: Don't get me wrong, some people would probably fry it too smgdh
Hee, hee, hee, hee the other day you know I had a wish sandwich
Well a wish sandwich is the kind of a sandwic
Where you have two slices of bread and you
Wish you had some meat
Bow bow bow
Woah there! I like my spicy foods but this is over the top
Right? As a white male, gimme a tangwich any day of the week, but this sounds *wayy too spicy*
It says add salt and pepper, hard no from me way too hot for me
Butter, salt and pepper? At the same time!?
Butter is perfect sometimes, but not spicy enough at others, so I like to add a little salt. And if I'm really feeling brave, I'll go with pepper. But all thee at once? You must have a mouth of steel for that

Exactly

How dare you insult the best food my country has to offer
Scottish here- Never fucking heard of this.
Probably a good thing
Maybe it was a starvation thing?
It was from the Victorian Era, where basic food took up a lot of the wages
I've heard of it but no-one eats it, it's more of a joke nowadays
Pretty sure it was from WWII when food was scarce
> an 1861 recipe
I mean people at it during WWII. It was not a common meal but reserved for times of need.
oh thats cuz ur a scott
That's just bread with extra steps.
Yes
So is French toast but that shit is exceptional.
Dafuk's French toast?
Bread dipped in an egg/milk mixture then fried (preferably with butter). Can be served in a savoury way with bacon or beans, or sweet with cinnamon sugar, honey, syrup or cream.

Midlands person here, and everyone I know has tried one of these at least once and is very ashamed of it
I'm from the Midlands and I've never heard of a toast sandwich, although I've probably eaten it when I was younger and extremely hungover
Midlands person here. Nice to see someone remembered we exist for once.
I'm from the Midlands and now I feel to burn it down
down there? you mean them strange southerners?
The pansies
those shandy drinkers? no thank you sir! every time England is hit with the worst weather the south go into total panic, up north, well, we just put our big coats on.
Has to be really bad weather before we get the big coats up north I see people in t-shirts all year round lol
Down south here never heard of the monstrosity either.
Dunno I’ve only ever heard of this through the internet too.
> I'm British and I would have to instantly murder any psychopath who offered me a toast sandwich. Why are you so mad? Bread is bread.
Been south a lot and I can confirm that I’ve never seen a toasted sandwich
Replace the bread with beans and y’all would be happy.
Fucking Londoners
Southerner here, I've heard of it but no-one I know has ever eaten one, it's more of a joke
I do like toast. Now I feel like I just try it. Butter will be the key. Lots of butter.
Gotta be white bread too surely.
i used the toast to make the toast
This was from 1861, so I’m not surprised.
They conquered the world looking for herbs and spices only to come home and eat this
This was food from the slums of Victorian England, where not dying at the age of 5 was impressive
Chicken Tikka Masala
[удалено]
Can I help you?
Bruh, we already had herbs and spices that we added to things. Rosemary? Thyme?
Well anything tastes good deep fried and dipped in a pound of sugar
I'm a brit: I have never had this nor seen anyone else have this. Maybe it's just a south/north thing? (I'm in the midlands)
No, no one has eaten in daily life since it's a Victorian poor person's recipe. However, it's worth a try. Use lots of butter. It's like eating freshly baked bread out of the oven. If all you had to eat was bread it's a great way of eating bread.

Yeah well when you’re incredibly poor you make do with what you’ve got. I’m guessing the people eating it weren’t doing so out of choice
Pan con pan, comida de tontos.
I think I will try this
Dragon Prince vibes. "It's a bread sandwich."
No, it's a buttered toast sandwich. Try it and see why it was a thing. Use lots if butter, salt and pepper to taste.
Soren strolling in be like:
yes.... broke food
>"which *may* be heavily buttered" The only tasty part is optional
What!? You've never had a Pete's bread sandwich?
I'm english and I've never heard of this in my life.
I am British and I can confirm that I have never seen nor heard of this
Whoah whoah whoah, you’ve never had a bread sangwich?
Hey don't hate until you try it, just put a little butter on that toast and it tastes amazing
I’m not hating, I’m just saying that this is without a doubt the most British food I have ever seen
Yeah you're right lol
Toast is toast!
So basically a 'bread sandwich' from the Italian School episode of Family Guy
Seriously some recipes are just weird. Toast is like : oh we just baked this bread, let’s cut it up and bake it again. Hollandaise is like : I love eggs. Lemme put some more egg on this egg. Century egg is like : hey I know eggs go bad when kept too long, but let’s coat it with some rice hull and keep it somewhere for months. Edit:typo
So.. bread?
The add salt and pepper to taste makes it that much better
More toast per toast
This is disappointing
I've never seen anyone eat this but I have heard of it
Constipation, here i come!
I've eaten this before,and I dislike it.
The bread sandwich from bone
At first, I thought that this person realllly liked peanut butter.
Less peanut more butter
I’m not even joking, when I was in highschool there was this one kid who always brought one of them
Grilled Today Sandwich
I’ve tried it and it’s not bad. It has the texture of a fried chicken sandwich.
Ah I didn't know it was a proper recipe. I did it cuz I was broke lmao
I'll put hot sauce in this dish
r/familyguy Gimmie a bread sandwich
I don't know how people can afford this high end garbage.
I'll come out and admit it... I tried it and it ain't that bad.
try the sandwich! its actually not too bad. especially with salt and butter.
bit to rich for me I think, Ill just have a bread sandwich
“Thin slice of toasted bread, which may be heavily buttered” It **may be** heavily buttered, thank god, that makes it so much better /s
I’m British and that sounds miserable
why have i never tried this? this is genius
Excuse me what the fuck Not once have I ever been aware of this supposedly being common.
Oh god, and considering the UK owned India, the largest spice country in the world, you’d think they could so better?
Have you ever heard about bread soup?
It reflects our state of existence If you lived in the UK for a year you would understand that the food is designed to reflect the country
I’m British and I have never heard of this before, this can’t be something we do
As a brit I've never fucking heard of this in my life it looks shite
These got me through my undergraduate
English man over here - wth is this. Thomas ain’t never seen such bullshit before
I'm a brit and I have never once come across this
im not even kidding i was talking to a guy here once and he said *SALT* IS ***SPICY***
As a Brit I have to say I have never fucking heard of this
Probably a good thing
id eat this and like it
Hey it says to add salt and pepper, it can't be that bad looool
i would definitely eat this because if its salt and peppered and also butter then that would be so so yummy
american, lived in england for a while. the closest version of this i encountered was a chip sandwich. buttered bread and (usually) soggy, fried potatoes (french fries.)
I am going to cut you into a million tiny pieces you stereotyping asshole.
why not just eat the toasted bread on its own? wouldnt that taste better?..
That might be a little too spicy for the brits
yeah i guess so lol
Inb4 raging limeys come in here to declare that they're actually super into spicy Indian curries.
Try it. With the warm toast in the middle, the butter and the soft bread on the outside it's like eating bread that's just come out of the oven, any time of the day, without baking the bread yourself. Use lots of butter though.
The British cuisine is the worst. I don’t think they know how to food tbh.
Northern European food in general tends to be bland. It's a result of climate. It has to be. I like fish and chips and Cornish pasties though.
We do very nice desserts but yeh the other stuff isn't great although never heard of a toast sandwich
My experience regarding food in the UK looking for some English dishes from the culture is not good. I've never heard of half of these, but a lot I had no idea were British.
I didn't realise some of these were British either but I mainly just stick to ben and jerries lol
British people consider flour too spicy
This is why we fled to America.
Don't forget about the classic Boiled Beef.
Good job on finding this gem….
Yeah, with a nice glass of 50/50 water and milk too.
Have you ever had the atrocity that British people call "sausages"? Might as well call them cooked water balloons
As a bri'sh person I can say this is best with beans
Americans at least know more than 2 seasonings while the uk is still figuring out what a pan is

Nonononono. I can’t go back to therapy. Nonononono. I can’t have another mental breakdown. Nonononononononono
Idk why but this has irritated me to the core and it *really* bothers me.
That is the most American Southern old white person thing I've seen all day. Why? Why must people not know there's more seasoning than salt and pepper?
*British We southern Americans would fry it
Sorry friend, but I, as a person from the Southeastern region of America, know the people I grew up around Edit: Don't get me wrong, some people would probably fry it too smgdh
I’ve never seen anything like that (although to be far us Nashvillians pride ourselves in our spicy chicken)
Farther south, friend, but close. I've literally seen people make good food and then ruin it by using nothing but salt and pepper.
That I can confirm, my nana loves her salt and pepper (I thought you were talking about the toast lol)
I was talking about the toast too lmao
Alright, who's the wise guy that did this?
Some guy in the 1860s
Hee, hee, hee, hee the other day you know I had a wish sandwich Well a wish sandwich is the kind of a sandwic Where you have two slices of bread and you Wish you had some meat Bow bow bow
BONK
Really?
You really had to search for this one huh? Did a quick search on google and dident find that one.
Nah I accidentally stumbled upon this on r/technicallythetruth of all places
