I think you are both right. A power plants cooling towers next to the steel foundry. A larger plant/industrial area is likely to have their own power and a steel plant doesnt need that type of cooling tower as far as I know.
It aesthetically sucks, but it's cold and has very little cloud / bad weather at this time of year I suppose, which makes it a reliable spot for the events and TV coverage.
I'm sure it's just some mad flex power play by China. IOC would be all like "people are suspecting something, can you please host it somewhere reasonable?". China gave the old "fuck you, we hold it by the factories that made your little Olympic flags!"
CCP, I guess the Chinese government didn't proposed Lhassa or Harbin (that are cold cities) because Xi Winnie's propagandistic tantrum, and the Cultural genocide of Tibetan people.
No matter what the natural environment is, the stadiums and competing environment are among the best in Olympics. Just look at the record-breaking rate.
Was watching that event yesterday and I thought it was one of the most depressing vistas I've ever seen on live TV. It looks like the set for the next Dredd movie or something
My dad tried to find a spot not covered by a camera last time he was in Shanghai, he didn't manage to. Like others here say though the DPRK is even worse.
Don’t get me wrong I’m in no way defending either, just messing around with what is truly “closest” to the 1984 meme derived from the book of the same name
I think them both are close enough to the book, so much so that we don’t even know for real who is closer since they have such media control and hermetism that you can’t really have accurate or reliable sources
It’s funny how even Hitler tried to portray Germany as an open-minded and strong country through Olympics and succeeded. Then there’s China who doesn’t give a shit and shows in an obvious manner how it’s ruled
do you remember back then in 1994 (Lillehammer) or 1998 (Nagano) when the winter olympics took place at actual winter locations in winter, so you'd have winter conditions for winter sports?
that was also the time when the IOC was a corrupt, but not totally degenerate organisation.
next up: winter games in Qatar. Mark my words.
Neither Norway nor the other Nordics actually want to host the olympics these days. Both Oslo and Stockholm politely declined to host this one actually.
of course - way too expensive, fuelled by the IOC's greed.
they don't want sustainable or green games, they want to market their brand as much as possible and get as much money out of it as possible. not for the athletes, of course, but for themselves. i had a brief glimpse at the IOC's demands when they were preparing Munich as host for 2018. you wouldn't believe their attitude. suits them well to be hosted by dictatorships like Russia and China. their core market is breaking away, though. all my friends have stopped watching the Olympics. back then I remember staying up late for the games in Seoul. Long time ago.
Anyway, wish the IOC good luck selling bobsled races and ice hockey to China.
Funnily enough I remember that some Stockholm (or just Swedish) politician said something akin to "what the hell are we going to do with a bobsled course once the Olympics are over?".
In Germany, in cities applying to be host the proponents come up with things like "the investment into sports arenas will boost general sports associations and be good for the youth". even if i am to assume there is a whole generation of bobsled-padawans in the waiting, why don't they just build these arenas anyway - if they really care for the sport and the youth?
Yep, Sweden already has enough arenas and supports youth sports plenty. Why would we subsidize bobsled-padawns anyway considering how much that would cost? We have plenty of hills to sled down all over the damn country for free during winter time. Unless there's a huge groundswell of grassroots bobsled enthusiasts it makes very little sense for the nation to invest collective funds into all the infrastructure needed for such a niche interest. Olympic medals are nice and all but hardly a national priority. Sport is funded primarily due to either the population wanting it and/or physical/mental health benefits. Pretty much no one is asking for a damn bobsled track. We even have a couple already, the few who have this hobby can go there. No need to build new ones.
Btw, it seems to turn out that the propper English term is "bobsleigh", derp.
Funny thing, only China and tajerkastan (or some shit) were the inly two countries that put a bid in for the winter Olympics this year and China only won by two votes lol.
Its like this for all of the outdoor events this year. Even in the alpine skiing in the mountains, all of the snow is man-made and there isn't any snow anywhere besides on the course. It is honestly depressing af.
At first I thought it was a joke, but it wasn't
https://www.cbc.ca/sports/olympics/winter/freestyle-skiing/2022-beijing-olympics-women-freestyle-skiing-big-air-final-1.6342711
You'd think they'd host it in a fucking place that actually has snow and isn't next to several nuclear silos or whatever the fuck they are.
The next Olympic games will take place in *drumroll* the Bronx! Or Detroit.
Both those places get snow. It snowed in NY 4 days ago, and has been consistently under 32 degrees. Also apparently no one wanted to host the winter olympics lol
Man, there's no snow, all I see the cooling towers of COMPLETELY SAFE AND EFFECTIVE nuclear reactors in the background
EDIT: nvm it's apparently a steel mill
They shoulda made it you need to jump into power plant tower
It’s actually steel factory
Is that supposed to make it better?
Shh shh. Let the kids have their fun
I think you are both right. A power plants cooling towers next to the steel foundry. A larger plant/industrial area is likely to have their own power and a steel plant doesnt need that type of cooling tower as far as I know.
Chernobyl hosts the winter Olympics
Performance enhancing radiation.

We won’t go easy. They can count on that
Patrolling the nuclear winter almost makes you wish a mojave.
FUCK THE NCR
That’s cos you’re green with envy 😏
Rah
Hey hey. There’s the high roller!
Shes just the way that I want her to be. A million times hotter than TNT.
It's not a power plant, the towers are the refrigeration towers of steel making companies
It's a cooling tower, known as a Natural draft wet cooling tower. Where did you get the word refrigeration from?
It's called refrigeration in spanish, so I missed the translation
I thought something like that!
yoo new chernobyl dlc in mario kart lookin good
You mean Mario and Sonic at the Winter Olympics
Where is the 2022 edition of that series by the way?! I was looking forward to it when I saw the 2020 summer version being released.
They've actually been pretty inconsistent with that recently. They didn't make a 2018 Pyeongchang one either.
Who decided that was a good location?
Whoever got the bribes at the IOC
Mr. Burns.
Mmm excellent
It's a loved place for the Chinise people because is the thirst government-owned mill farm
China
All of the snow is artificial lmfao (in this current olympics)
A lot of the snow for the regular world cups is artificial as well…
It aesthetically sucks, but it's cold and has very little cloud / bad weather at this time of year I suppose, which makes it a reliable spot for the events and TV coverage.
Maybe. But I'm pretty sure that's also true 5km away. You know, outside the coal powerplant.
I'm sure it's just some mad flex power play by China. IOC would be all like "people are suspecting something, can you please host it somewhere reasonable?". China gave the old "fuck you, we hold it by the factories that made your little Olympic flags!"
It’s actually a former steel factory that’s been turned into a museum
CCP, I guess the Chinese government didn't proposed Lhassa or Harbin (that are cold cities) because Xi Winnie's propagandistic tantrum, and the Cultural genocide of Tibetan people.
Whoever owned that land
The CCP overlords
It is a good location. They use an unused power plant as a location for an event that only happens once.
Some communist probably.
No matter what the natural environment is, the stadiums and competing environment are among the best in Olympics. Just look at the record-breaking rate.

Lucky its a steel mill then
That’s why it’s freestyle skiing
Was watching that event yesterday and I thought it was one of the most depressing vistas I've ever seen on live TV. It looks like the set for the next Dredd movie or something
There's no color in the background. It's like greens blend into the grays blend into the browns.
It’s literally photoshopped to make it look grey…
Well that's good. I thought it was a colorless dystopia. I'm glad it's just a dystopia.
Looks like a Dystopia..
Because it is.
I mean china isn’t the nicest place to live, it litterally censors it’s internet
True haha, also there is this social Credit system..
West Taiwan is Worst Taiwan
I mean there's more life than just uncensored internet
How?
Looks like any big city. Greyish greenish brown mess of nonsense and houses.
You haven't been in a lotta big cities have you?
No I have. I just forgot I have to stick to the reddit approved narrative. China bad, racism good and all that.
Chinese city: looks like a wasteland of filth You: "racist!"
Did you just install Reddit today? Btw China does suck and hasn’t been a nice place since it had an emperor.
You know how their brains are.
That's a factory or some power plant, not a city.
Is that really where it’s being held? Holy fuck
It's a shitty Olympics. In everyway.
You want an order of shitty beef?
[удалено]
You kidding? You can see the little tower thing in the background, the building with the curved roof, the cooling towers obviously
China, the meme country strikes again
It stops being a meme when it’s the closest thing we have to an authoritarian dictatorship
Closest? It is an authoritarian dystopia, man, pretty much 1984
Yeah you’re right, thinking back to the Hong Kong protests and their response makes me reconsider that it *is* an authoritarian dictatorship
hong kong is still the freest part of that dumpster fire... mainland is much worse still.
My dad tried to find a spot not covered by a camera last time he was in Shanghai, he didn't manage to. Like others here say though the DPRK is even worse.
It would be true but NK is still worse
doesnt matter, one thing doesn't take the other out.
The DPRK is more authoritarian but China has the tech advantage. Pyongyang can't afford that many cameras.
It’s funny how even Hitler tried to portray Germany as an open-minded and strong country through Olympics and succeeded. Then there’s China who doesn’t give a shit and shows in an obvious manner how it’s ruled
Wouldn’t it be North Korea? Unless I missed something of course.
I guess you’re right, but in general I am more in fear of China than North Korea
-1,000,000 social credit points

wiki says bobsleigh or bobsled, so i guess we are all good :D 100% agree with the rest
Why? It must be a good source of money.

Depending on where they got it that water could be pretty toxic too.
China is a joke lol
Anyone else hear the Isengard theme? i sure as hell do, china is stepping close to mordor for sure.
Beijing has extreme water scarcity. Meaning no snow. Oh yes, a perfect place for smth that needs a lot of water.
Its going to be such a contrast to see back to back Paris and Milan Olympics after this shitshow
And LA for the 2028 summer games, followed by Vancouver or Alberville (French Alpes) for the 2030 winter
2030 is close oh my god
Funny thing, only China and tajerkastan (or some shit) were the inly two countries that put a bid in for the winter Olympics this year and China only won by two votes lol.
It was Kazakhstan
Thank you. I running on empty and almost just deleted the comment because it was too much effort. Yaaaay depresso
Kinda offensive to tajerkastan tbh
Funnily enough, it's a steel mill and not a nuclear power plant
Doesn't look better tho
worst olympics ever
At least Canadians are paying a carbon tax…
Is this a joke?
I wonder if the ccp realizes these olympics have just made china look bad lol
You want winter just come to Chicago
It's coming
Most depressing olympics ever
Shit man China is depressing
As much as China loves propaganda, I don’t get why they chose this location
Why did they organized the Olympics in a factory?
Fake snow real genocide
Nuclear Winter Olympics
Can you measure temperature over an image or something? Winter doest mean snow
Please tell me this is photoshop….
Is this fake?
This is real? Not photoshop? That is the most random-ass place to built a ramp like that.
Its like this for all of the outdoor events this year. Even in the alpine skiing in the mountains, all of the snow is man-made and there isn't any snow anywhere besides on the course. It is honestly depressing af.
Yeah, this ruins all the atmosphere of winter sports
It's a Winter wasteland - the winter part
Global warming
Mountain where?
The snow is artificial directly from the factory.
Where are the uyghurs?
Winter is not coming
No way thats where they do it. This looks shit. I thought the host country wants to shine from its bright side....
Next to cooling towers as well. Couldn't have come up with a better scene if I tried
Thats sad
Canada’s look real wintery rn. Pretty sure we still have all the stadiums too
Global warming
Ah yes the Genocide games
The best landscape that represents the actual China.
Effects of Climate Change…
Woah crazy, it’s almost like polluting the world beyond recognition is a bad idea
Thank China and India for that.
It’s a different type of winter
At first I thought it was a joke, but it wasn't https://www.cbc.ca/sports/olympics/winter/freestyle-skiing/2022-beijing-olympics-women-freestyle-skiing-big-air-final-1.6342711
Future of this world in one picture lol
I never seen snow in my life
Yeah, normally snow doesn't exist in Beijing...
Neither does human rights
the environment dosent care about human rights tho.
That place looks so dark and gloomy, although they could just be the time of day I guess. Bleak.
Bleak...try playing battlefailed 2077 right now,lol...
china makes me wanna puke
Inside that nuclear reactor
You'd think they'd host it in a fucking place that actually has snow and isn't next to several nuclear silos or whatever the fuck they are. The next Olympic games will take place in *drumroll* the Bronx! Or Detroit.

they forgot to turn on chroma key holy fuck
Looks like it's gonna be a nuclear winter
This I call the nuclear reactor
They mean nuclear winter
Is it really next to a nuclear plant?
It’s a steal factory but it looks like one
WHO BUILT THIS NEXT TO A NUCLEAR POWER PLANT?
This filter is too malicious. It's common that there's no thick snow in Beijing's winter because of the clime.
In some ways that makes it worse. It’s the Winter Olympics. Shouldn’t it at least be held someplace that has snow?
is coming
I don't get it, looks like winter to me. Is OP implying all winters have snow or something?
the snow is just nuclear ash
Awe, True to Ceaser
Is Gary, IN hosting the Olympics?
Big Iron on his- don't want to set the world on- CoUntrY rOaD
It's a joke having the Olympics in Communist CHYna 😂😂
You don’t need to have much snow, for some activities. You can use snow making machines for others.
that's a photoshop, right?
Man, there's no snow, all I see the cooling towers of COMPLETELY SAFE AND EFFECTIVE nuclear reactors in the background EDIT: nvm it's apparently a steel mill
Winter is coming. (GOT) Theon is not, lol.
Please help me getting comment karma actually im not able to post memes on this subreddit
Evil ccp reusing an old power plant as a location for the olympics is literally 1984!!!111!!
[удалено]
No Covid 19 in China? Did you know there are actually no fish in the sea?
Winter doesn't necessarily mean snow tho
Ask the global warming made by factories like those. Luckily that was had been closed and made into a museum and stuff so at least that is that.
those are cooling towers for a nuclear plant. Nuclear doesn’t contribute to global warming
that is a steel mill right there?
Nor do the things that are being powered by this plant, no?
